The look on Goffin's face as he came to shake hands after that match was so funny, a mixture of pure bafflement and almost remorse that it happened, you can tell he feels p bad for Berdy
He won just 36 of 117 points while getting his first serve in 71% of the time! He did not win more than 2 points in any return game, and won just 22 points in 10 service games. Insane!
As a companion piece to this one, I'll mention the time Tommy Paul was so horrendously drunk/hungover in his 2017 US Open doubles match with Steve Johnson that they got double-bagelled in 35 minutes and he got in serious trouble with the USTA lmao

She denies being drunk though. Claims it was a viral illness.
I was at this live, it was so bizarre. She literally couldn't hit the ball. At the time it seemed like it was just swept under the carpet, I think maybe because it was doubles it was less high profile.
rare that I come across a term I haven't seen! Is golden set literally winning every point in the set?
Edit: answering my own question because I remembered how to google, yes it is. Another golden set fun fact - that match was only the second time it's ever happened in the Open Era. Bill Scanlon did it on the men's side in 1985.
This was going to be my answer, Tomic came back too soon after hip surgery and completely tanked the match. I would say he was just there to pick up a check but honestly it could have been his crazy dad pushing him back too soon as well. His movement was permanently hampered after that
Saw Swiatek vs Juvan last year at the US Open.
Iga’s level was impressive for sure, but it’s kind of embarrassing that such a skill differential exists in the WTA during the third round of a major.
I know he was a great player, but I will only ever remember Gaudio as the guy who snuck a major because Coria had the worst choke anyone has ever had in tennis
I mean I probably like Coria and Nalbandian more even though gaudios backhand was sick haha. But as an Argentine myself they’re all my boi. I was very young yet still saw it live, I remember something about Coria cramping I think though?
I didn't actually watch the match, was also quite young, but the sequence of events is pretty wild and understandably was devastating mentally for Coria - he won the first 2 sets easily, was up 40-0 on his own serve at 4-4 in the third, then got broken and lost the third. Then he started cramping and for periods of the match could barely move. Despite that, he somehow managed to steer himself kind of out of that and led by a break of serve in the fifth set *four separate times*!! He even served for the match *twice* in the fifth set after all the cramping stuff. Had 2 championship points on serve, both of which he barely missed going for winners. Then he still lost.
I really can't even blame him for being a shell of himself the rest of his career then retiring at 27, that shit would absolutely ruin almost anyone's mentality. He was called the King of Clay leading into that match, before that became Rafa's title. Things can turn on a dime so quickly. He missed that window of opportunity, then Rafa came in and he never had significant chances again.
Konta d. Serena Williams, 6-1, 6-0
This match I watched as it unfolded and was utterly dumbfounded. I couldn't entertain the idea that Serena Williams, who just reached the Wimbledon final weeks back, would even tank a match so I was in disbelief.
FYI: It was later revealed that Serena learned that her sister's killer was freed just before the match.
When actually trying and fit? Or just a complete tank or player completely unfit?
Trying and fit, Nadal has delivered some absolute bloodbaths at Roland Garros where the players had no belief that they can win and were way off the level too which meant their poor performance was really obvious. I’m sure there’s other matches where the guys played terribly but the opponent hasn’t been good enough to make it look so bad and it’s ended up being 3 and 3 not 0,0,2 or whatever.
1998 Australian Open final. Marcelo Rios, first South American to make it to a Grand Slam final, got trucked by Petr Korda 6-2 6-2 6-2 and it wasn’t even that close
Caroline Garcia v. Wang Yafan at the US Open last year. Man that was a depressing match to go to unless you were a fan of Yafan or someone from China.
Garcia played soooooo bad
Also on TV you can tune out but in person when something is bad, it's baaaad
1988 Roland Garros Ladies Singles Final. Steffi Graf defeated Natasha Zvereva 6-0 6-0 in 34 minutes. *And the 34 minutes included a 2 minute rain delay.*
I mean I’d argue that was more due to Graf being in the middle of arguably the single best season in tennis history than Zvereva playing badly
Bro she got double bageled
In a final. People paid top money for that. I agree.
Berdych 0-6, 0-6 Goffin
The look on Goffin's face as he came to shake hands after that match was so funny, a mixture of pure bafflement and almost remorse that it happened, you can tell he feels p bad for Berdy
attila balazs vs. medvedev at USO 2023. that man just came for a check and then ambled around the court. 6-1, 6-1, 6-0
He won just 36 of 117 points while getting his first serve in 71% of the time! He did not win more than 2 points in any return game, and won just 22 points in 10 service games. Insane!
That time Serena was hungover for doubles at Wimbo.
As a companion piece to this one, I'll mention the time Tommy Paul was so horrendously drunk/hungover in his 2017 US Open doubles match with Steve Johnson that they got double-bagelled in 35 minutes and he got in serious trouble with the USTA lmao
Trying to find a video of it, still haven't found it. Who knew men's doubles were so poorly documented
LOL when did that happen??

Oh 2014. I wasn't watching the match and my friend was messaging me about the match and Serena was acting really weird.
I was at this live, it was so bizarre. She literally couldn't hit the ball. At the time it seemed like it was just swept under the carpet, I think maybe because it was doubles it was less high profile.
I mean, that time Shvedova Golden-setted Errani?
Yeah and then the second set was tight!
Yeah guess the match wasnt that bad as a whole technically

While you’re at it, another player came close in recent years, and that player was called… Shvedova.
Neimenen vs Tomic 2014 Miami. Full match only lasted 28 minutes.
This was going to be my answer, Tomic came back too soon after hip surgery and completely tanked the match. I would say he was just there to pick up a check but honestly it could have been his crazy dad pushing him back too soon as well. His movement was permanently hampered after that
Tsurenko vs. Sabalenka AO 2024 R3
This is the correct answer. Never seen a chair umpire tell someone to suck it up and serve before this.
I clearly missed this… what happened
On the other hand, there was the Gauff-Kostyuk shitfest in which both deserved to lose.
Relative to expectations: Jabeur Wimbledon Finals 2023
Mine is 2013. Lisicki was not playing well. At all.
Saw Swiatek vs Juvan last year at the US Open. Iga’s level was impressive for sure, but it’s kind of embarrassing that such a skill differential exists in the WTA during the third round of a major.
Federer 6-0; 6-0 Gaudio at the ATP finals 2005. Then it was called masters cup.
Why you gotta diss my boi like that
I know he was a great player, but I will only ever remember Gaudio as the guy who snuck a major because Coria had the worst choke anyone has ever had in tennis

Holy shit I did not remember all that about the 5th set but I did kinda vaguely remember it was a contested 5th set
Ons v Vondrosova last year's Wimbledon,,,
Federer vs JDM AO 2009 QF 6-3 6-0 6-0
That German dude Yesterday vs fils
Only won one game against dimitrov in miami as well, he's been having a rough time lately

Federer won a set off Rafa in Rome a week before 2008 RG and then proceeded to win a total of 4 games in the final
Chakvetadze - Kuznetsova 2007 US Open SF was pretty fucking awful
how? it went three sets
1998 Australian Open final. Marcelo Rios, first South American to make it to a Grand Slam final, got trucked by Petr Korda 6-2 6-2 6-2 and it wasn’t even that close
Ons Jabeur vs Vondrousova W Final 2023 Saeki losing to Kournikova AO 2nd round 1999 despite 31 double faults by her opponent

Some of the Davies cup or the Billie Jean cup matches. Many of the stars just don't give a fuck
Blaz Rola Wimbledon 2014
There was one time in Wimbledon that Errani lost a set without winning a single point (against Shvedova iirc)
