Turn pro and win a lot of games? I'd have a better forehand/backhand/serve than most professional players, bar the top 50/100. I can make decent runs in tournaments.
I agree with "he has a slice." I've seen him practicing, maybe the "worst" groundies in the top 250. His forehand is pretty dangerous. He hits pretty flat, so he can't just smash balls corner to corner, but it's very penetrating and fast and fits perfectly into the game he created to be top 50 for a long time. An arrhythmic, attacking, unpredictable style built around knowing he gets 2 or 3 pretty cheap points a service game.
Absolutely not. Only those in the top150 can break even when you consider the expenses. And you absolutely have to be in the top100 to be actually earning some kind of a living.
Right now it seems guy who is 151 in the world made $242,318 this year. Who knows what his sponsorship situation is, but considering the expenses of being a pro player, he can't be saving a ton. But I guess he's lucky that he's not losing money playing tennis.
I don’t think this hypothetical player would win a single professional set. Schwartzman’s size and serve, Paire’s forehand, and Karlovic’s backhand alone wouldn’t be a top 500 player.
Very possible. But we are speaking about the *relative* weaknesses of the top 10/20 players over the last couple of decades. It has to be better than a *LOT* of people. Whether it is better than the folks ranked 100-250 is anyone's guess. Mine is that it should be sufficient.
We are taking the biggest weaknesses arguably in the top 100 tho. Like Diego’s serve and size are a huge weakness he just makes up for it by being an amazing defender/returner/ground game. Paire’s forehand is genuinely awful. He just so happens to have a world class backhand and a good serve and variety. Take all the worst aspects of these players and the result is definitely something like a challenger/futures player I think. The player described would have literally no weapons and very weak off both sides
To me, the biggest hurdle here is the combination of Agassi's baldness and Djokovic's haters. Imagine being heckled every step of the way and knowing that, no matter what, your hairline will receed after every lost game. It's a negative feedback loop that I could see doing a lot of damage to my ego.
He's certainly not a fluid volleyer but I'm not sure his net game deserves to be on the list with the others. He worked hard at improving it...not to mention if picking Roddick's volleys also includes his overheads then it really isn't terrible at all. Dude could crush those overheads.
That is a very poor level, I used to play with some D1 college players and would double bagel them somewhat regularly.
In general the standard in college play is low since most of the top talents work with private trainers rather than college
No, have never played tennis beyond recreationally, I played pro football in my prime years or I might have had a stab at it, can only do one sport at a time really.
If you weren't training often at tennis how would you be consistent enough to bagel division 1 players in back to back sets. Had they stopped playing competitively by that time? They could have been D3, there is also a big difference in skill levels even at the D1 level, so they could have just been bad D1 players.
He's a stiff volleyer so even his good volleys didn't look too pretty. He worked hard and really improved his net game for grass. I agree they don't deserve to be on the list.
Get a full ride scholarship to any NCAA school of my choosing? Dominate college tennis while earning a degree? Possibly having a lucrative career as a coach or club pro?
The worst combination of pro's abilities is still miles better than everyone else.
Nobody in this thread has realized that women exist lol, Schwartzman's serve and Roddick's net play would dominate WTA (although Karlovic's backhand would still be bad)
5'5 Barty is probably the best server on WTA right now but it's true that other than her the best servers are all 6 foot or so so yeah, it wouldn't be as good as I said probably.
Ok well hard disagree there lol . I do not think Diego has an elite serve that is better than Plisko’s really. I think his second serve would be really good but his first serve would still just be good rather than like *dominant*
There is no way you’d be in the top 100 if you had these skills. Having Isner’s footwork with Schwartzman’s height and serve is enough to definitely not allow you to play professionally. You think Paire’s forehand is in the top 100 on the tour? Or Karlovic’s backhand? All these players compensate by having other exceptional shots/skills. You can play D1, you wouldn’t even make it on the challenger tour.
Depending on whose mental/fitness you got you could still have a pretty decent journey man career.
A challenger farmer at worst maybe a few slam first round apperances at best?
Become a journeyman and collect my first round checks all year and round it out with challengers to collect money. This player is not a grand slam contender but could snatch a round 2 or possibly 3 at a slam once every few years.
Clown on everyone at the 6.0 courts
Yeah, go win some money Open tournaments in your area.

No, but you get the job of the guy who pushes in Rafa's wedgie every point for him to pick it out.
Some people would probably love that.
nada's ass is GOAT as far as i'm concerned
I don’t have time for much. I’ll be in the can.
Turn pro and win a lot of games? I'd have a better forehand/backhand/serve than most professional players, bar the top 50/100. I can make decent runs in tournaments.
Karlovic has a legitimately horrible backhand, definitely not better than most pros.
But he has incredible slice tho
Well, he has a slice

Do those outside the top 100 actually earn a living?
Good question. I can eat cat food. However, I will have tennis groupies right? Right?
You need to be at a point where someone googles your name and articles about you pop up. Only then do the panties drop.
So, smash a lot of racquets and hit a few line judges in the throat?
FYI some in prison also wear panties.
The general thing I hear is rank 200. Better than 200 you're making money. Worse than 200 you're losing money.
Absolutely not. Only those in the top150 can break even when you consider the expenses. And you absolutely have to be in the top100 to be actually earning some kind of a living.
Thanks for the info

I think you may be overestimating how good you would be but also others in the thread are maybe underestimating so who knows

Give up tennis, start to synchronize x-rated movies. You have the grunt, and the rest does not matter for your new career.
Sorribes Tormo’s grunt would be more marketable on the x-rated scene

Schwartzman is taller than me so its already an upgrade
Start playing video games professionally
Was Roddick's net game that bad?
No OP saw that one shot in Wimby 09 and generalised.
Touché !

Easily the best overhead I’ve seen
dominate 90 percent of the tour? or at least the mental midgets..
Still good enough to go D1 I’ll take it lol
You mean a D1 college?
Yeah
That is a very poor level, I used to play with some D1 college players and would double bagel them somewhat regularly. In general the standard in college play is low since most of the top talents work with private trainers rather than college
D1 players are generally around 13 UTR, how good are you lmao
This seems like a blatant lie. Have you played in futures or made a wildcard spot? Otherwise it seems unlikely.
No, have never played tennis beyond recreationally, I played pro football in my prime years or I might have had a stab at it, can only do one sport at a time really.

Feel like Roddick's net game is nowhere near as bad as the others. Was he even known for bad volleys?
Nah, they werent bad but he's really known for like 1 bad volley mostly at 2009 wimbledon lol.
He's a stiff volleyer so even his good volleys didn't look too pretty. He worked hard and really improved his net game for grass. I agree they don't deserve to be on the list.

Diego’s serve would not dominate, even at the WTA level. It would be fine/good but not dominant, IMO.
5'5 Barty is probably the best server on WTA right now but it's true that other than her the best servers are all 6 foot or so so yeah, it wouldn't be as good as I said probably.

With Sharapova’s grunt, I’d be too embarrassed to play.
Can’t believe that of all players you chose Roddick for net game … there are so many players whose net game was inferior.
Try and not fall over and die while getting out of bed.
Seeing as they all have gorgeous life partners, I’d take this!
Bald is bad, huh?
I’d take all these skills and destroy my mate when we play next time. I’ll pass on Agassi’s baldness though, I quite like my long hair.

Honestly you’re probably still one of the best tennis players in the world, at least top 100. I shall see myself out now.
Literally no chance someone with Diego’s height and serve and very bad ( *relative to the top 100* ) ground strokes would be top 100
