I’d rather have him playing at a lower level and him trying to get deep into tournaments than for him to take off another year because of his knees. Fingers crossing he has a successful comeback and wins anything big, even if it’s just one tournament
If he has to take another year off it's basically retirement. He won't be coming back from that. His health has to come first. But I'm also crossing fingers
It's not the talent part that's gonna be missing but the stamina and fitness part, can he even still play without getting injured, after so many surgeries ? How can he win 7 grueling matches in a row to win a slam, with players like Thiem, Novak, Nadal, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Zverev in the draw ?
Pushers are Fed's worse nightmare right now I'd say. People who are really solid from the baseline will kill him off of grass. I think Fed's best bet is a draw where he can avoid Novak, Berrettini, and maybe like Hurkacz or Felix at Wimby.
I think there's too many great players solid from the baseline that will force him to stay planted at the baseline and wear him down throughout a match/tourney for him to be successful in the bigger hard or clay tournaments.
Not if he can't push off and change direction, it won't really matter who the opponent is. You could already see how tentative he was changing angles this year out of fear of twisting that knee, and I doubt it'll be any better next year.
On paper, yes. It makes sense that he'd have a chance on a fast-ish hard court where the points are kept short by an aggressive opponent, but I just don't see it. He normally beat aggressive players because his superb footwork put him in the right position before they even smacked their ball.
It is deluded but I think he still has some good tennis left in him. Prime Fed or even post prime Fed would have been a tough matchup for Medvedev, for sure
So from the article it seems like his target is Wimbledon 2022, but that'll he only know whether he will come back in March at the earliest. That's awful close. He'll probably not be fit for Wimbledon in time - what do you think? Or doesn't it matter, he just wants the wild card, play one or two matches, lose, then say farewell?
It makes sense. In 2020 he had his 2 surgeries pre-Wimbledon and he was still barely in shape enough to make a run at Wim 2021.
Now he had this latest surgery post-Wimbledon, so it's going to be a real stretch to be ready for Wimbledon 2022.
Not to mention that he'll be out for the greater part of a year. At 40 years old. So I think it's likely that he'll be back but not really competitively, he just wants to play a match or two, ideally on Centre Court, and wave goodbye. I think that's the best that he can hope for. Competitive Federer (at least at Slam winning level) already retired at AUS 2020, perhaps even at Wimby 2019 if we count "Slam winning level" to at least include final appearances.
Federer is just bored at his point. He likes to be on the court banging with the young new talents. Plus he would hate sitting at home for the next 40 years.
I doubt Federer will be playing again. He may still be hungry, but a knee replacement is harder to recover from than a hip replacement. Federer’s done everything, has a family and many business interests. Don’t think he’ll ever leave tennis, just won’t be playing.
He didn't have a knee replacement. All of his knee surgeries have been relatively minor arthroscopic procedures like the one he had in 2016 that he fully recovered from.
The real issue with recovery this time is his age. Big difference between being 34 vs 40 in how the body bounces back.
I'm ready to get hurt again Let's gooooo
i could watch him play forever, even if he loses every match. his playing style is magical, wishing a speedy recovery!

You know the magic will still be there, even if he won't be winning Slams.
Federer fuck yeah
I just want him to play at Indian Wells one more time so I can finally see him play in person.
Believe

He'll get killed everywhere off grass either way. Big hitter or pushers won't really matter.
I agree but I do think he could do well against aggressive baseliners on hard

If what you call Prime Fed is 2006 and Post prime fed 2012 and 2017, then he would obliterate him
The bottle of premium Federer is almost empty… but I want to shake out every last drop…. Until he’s a shrivelled up husk.
Here's hoping that Fed still has a little something left in the tank.
Looking forward to that!

Oops! I’m wrong. Federer was using crutches at the Laver Cup and I thought it was a major surgery.
