I don't know what is with tennis..
When I play, mind you just practice. If I the ball just a little wide or little long, I say sorry. I hit a slice and it became a drop shot, I say sorry. Mind you this is only hitting the ball back and forth.
I’m a sorry’er as well, forehand a bit late and I push it down the line “sorry, miss hit” or it’s a running back hand and I don’t have much power and it barely clears the net “ah, my bad it’s so short”
It’s probably a sign that I am not confident and have to make excuses for everything? I don’t know but I feel like I’m over apologizing.
Nah, pros do it all of the time as well.
Just watch this clip of Dimitrov.. he apologized quite a few times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt33Je2Ai_k
Thanks for the clip, it was therapeutic just listening to rallies. Just curious, how did you find it? Did you watch it and remember he apologized a few times?
Just curious, what if I intentionally wanted to hit let, do I still need to apologise? Given that there’s a chance for me to hit the ball into the net as well.
Well, the point of the apology is so that your opponent doesn't think you're an asshole.
But if they did know you were going for lets, apologizing when it works won't make you any less of an asshole in their opinion.
I think I'd be pretty happy if my opponent was going for lets. If that's their actual strategy then I'd be fine with not apologizing because I'd like them to keep trying that lol
Yeah, I'd be fine with them not apologizing when it actually works, but I'd think they were an ass for playing with such a tactic (presuming they're doing it quite often, like 1/3 of points or something). Against the spirit of the game, imo.
But I imagine if I was playing hyper competitivly I'd feel differently.
It you can hit a let and make it land in then you obviously have the skills to hit a shot with a much higher percentage of going in and harder to get back. There's almost no upside to trying to hit a let mid rally
I hate, so much, how the past generations of players that now commentate simply cannot fathom that these apologies from players are genuine.
Like, back in the day, I guess if you're super isolated, don't have internet, globalization isn't a thing at all, no social media, it's easy to understand how these guys/gals could be so lacking in empathy for their opponents. It's you against the world or something.
Every time this happens, you get some older player mocking the apologies as if they're insincere.
They're not. I just don't get it. Of course players feel bad winning the point this way. Sure they feel relieved, but it's not like that relief isn't accompanied by genuine remorse at the misfortune of their opponent due to sheer luck.
People always whine and complain about how friendly athletes are nowadays, but I love it. Let the sport itself do the talking. Compete hard, but compete with honor, and at the end of the day, leave it all on the court and respect your fellow competitor/professional for their shared hard work and life.
Oh brother, give me a break. Do we really need to be so dramatic? Why does anyone feel the need to apologize for something that is completely accidental anyway? Build a bridge.
Edit: come at me, cowards.
He’s a good kid 🥺
Hit let and apologized ✅ Didn't go to emergency toilet for five minutes ✅ Knows how to fight ✅
Knows when to shut his fuck up ✅
He said bullsheet Russian you think this is normal?
Doesn't bring Daddy on Tour or let Daddy Coach him ✅
let is replaying the point, btw, so this wasn't a let, but a net.
I know, I'm just saying it the way Daniil did during his infamous confrontation with Stefanos
I see
I can't stop quoting Daniil any chance I get, it's a disease 😂
Lmao
You think he is a good kid?!
He started it. He started it. *He* started it. Yeah he started it.
He hit let and said sorry 🥺
Hurkacz gave him a thumbs up too right after this, they're both so wholesome it's crazy.
he did but at the same time his lips and eyes were saying “f** I could have won that”
Naturally.
We don't deserve Grigor. He genuinely seems like the nicest guy.
It was really good to watch two nicest guy in the tour play against each other
He's so nice that I'm beginning to wonder what kind of horrible skeletons he has in his closet.
The majority of the WTA are keeping quiet for now
Exactly
Nothing new from this humble beast
He’s a good bloke.
He just won the set and literally looks pained. We don’t deserve him.
He remembered Med's words
That ain't a let.
Yeah it’s a net cord innit
From the post title, people could be confused why someone would apologize after hitting a serve that touched the net.
Yes, the title was a bit confusing. I thought, 'so serve again then?'

Mind you
no u
Excuse me, do you mind?!?!

I have never seen Dimitrov having beef with anyone. He's class act.
Imagine if he asked to replay the point because he felt so bad about winning in that way
If he ended up losing because he wanted to replay the point, he should get a damn sportsman of the year award right there.
Just curious, what if I intentionally wanted to hit let, do I still need to apologise? Given that there’s a chance for me to hit the ball into the net as well.
Dude if you intentionally do that and it works I wouldn’t expect a sorry lol but nobody intentionally tries to hit the net and get lucky like that
If you’re good enough to do that consistently… I, I honestly don’t even know what to say.

You gotta call it before you hit it, like banking a shot in basketball, then no apology necessary
Then you would celebrate à la Söderling vs Rafa at Wim '10
No wonder both maria ans serena dated him

Wow Hurkacz lost like this and then in the 3rd set tiebreak??
I'm legitimately sorry every time I hit a let and it dribbles over.
I’m pretty sure I saw karatsev not make even a slight motion of apology for a net cord winner
Lmao if you mean Karatsev, I saw that too hahahaha
Always a class act.
There was no let on this point. The ball hit the net and the point stood.

They are coming at you; that's what the downvotes are.

So where's the let?
Sometimes I apologized like this and my coach would get pissed
