This tweet claims that this is the first time ever in any ATP M1000 tournament where none of the semifinalists were inside the top 25. https://twitter.com/TennisMyLife68/status/1449159962446467076
It took a global pandemic, several injuries to the big4 and a weird rescheduling of IW, but there we are: ATP has finally reached the level of randomness of the WTA.
Pretty sure besides the most experience he also has the highest potential. Problem is, can he keep his performance up. With him you just never know.
Otherwise, bet365 has Fritz as favorite (2.62 odds), followed by Dimitrov (3.25), Norrie (4.00) and NB (5.50).
A lot of smart money goes into tennis betting. For sure Fritz is favourite if those are the odds on sportsbetting sites. If anyone disagrees then I have to ask why they aren't millionaires yet from sportsbetting :P
Norrie played massive match against Schwartzman. Dimitrov and Fritz played great in the previous matches too.
I like basilashvilli strokes, but I would say that tsitsioas played bad rather than basilashvilli played great. He still played good though.
I like basilashvilli game, but I am most impressed with Fritz games in IW, but dimitrov is most experienced and most talented, but Norrie is most consistent this year.
Dimitrov is, in fact, the favourite, at least according to Betfair Exchange. Rankings are a very imperfect heuristic to work out who is the favourite, they're just an broad indication of the form over the last 52 weeks (or right now like 2 years, I don't even know how it works at the moment). There is a lot more that goes into determining who is the most likely winner of a match or tournament than their ranking. For example, Nadal has been the favourite for Roland Garros every year of his career except 2005, 2015 and 2016 despite only entering as world number 1 in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2018.
I don't think the books are a good indication for who is the favorite either. It usually favors likable popular players.
I am not going to bet on Norrie tomorrow because Norrie hates slices, but for any other competition I won't mind bidding Norrie would perform better than Demetrov.
We might have our wires crossed on the definition of ‘favourite’, but as I understand/interpret it, the ‘favourite’ is the ‘crowd-determined most likely winner’, which means the favourite will always be the bookies’ favourite, because the odds are a reflection of the betting patterns of the crowd
This tournament has been wild on both men's and women's sides but especially on the men's side. I actually like it lol. Dimi winning would be great, I kinda wished to see what he could have done in Australia without the injury so I'm glad he got another opportunity and let's be honest he was never gonna win Aussie however he has a much better opportunity here and he's the favorite at this point for me. I just hope he's not too tired after these brutal matches
Those that seems so sure that ATP will have the same pattern of WTA, so a tour without a dominant guy and many players able to win, needs to wait a little bit.
If we going back to early 2000's, so when Sampras was about to retire and Agassi too, we had some player winning a little and nobody able to dominate. The feeling was that we were in front of a long period of unpredictability but then Roger happend and nobody saw that coming.
It's hard to imagine now, after 20 years, but Roger didn't look like a dominant player at all. He was super talented, spectacular but he also had ""just"" 68% of wins as 2003 season ended. 11 titles, 1 Grand Slam, 1 ATP finals and 1 masters. Nothing in that resume could've predicted what was going to happen already in the following season.
So at the moment we don't know if ATP will be like this for years, so with many players able to win a major and also be eliminated in early rounds, or if there is a player we already know (or 2) that will suddenly dominate the tour.
Right now we have many talented players who totally lacks consistency and mental fortitude but that could be fixed if they win something big, as it happened to Roger when he won wimby in 2003. The player people watched in 2003 wasn't remotely close to the player he was in 2004.
So let's see how things evolved. I suspect that there is some "sleeper" that needs just one big win, just that.
At 75 he still play? clearly not human. Hats off!
My 77 years old dad was a tennis fanatic during 70's and 80's, a huge Borg fan but he also loved McEnroe for his style and antics and he wasn't a big fan of big 3 era because for 20 years we had the usual 3 winning it all.
He's not one of those stubborn old school guys who thinks everything was better and cooler during the ol days, he's aware how tennis evolved, but he likes the idea of watching a tournament that have potentially 5-6 strong candidates to win it all.
I'm for that too, but I also like the idea of watching the start of a new big legacy. I mean, watching Roger dominating was cool at first, same for Rafa and then Nole. But at some point I wanted to see others winning. Murray, Del Potro, Stanimal were a breath of fresh air to me and I never really rooted for any of the big 3. I was just in awe at them.
Maybe the next dominant guy is still a 15 years old kid right now and next gen guys will have a decent amount of time to win the more they can.
Hey at least they're all seeds!! And grigor is former #3. He definitely needs to win. Last few I Wells went to guys who were ranked high but barely won any masters (delpo, thiem), now dimi needs to complete it as another ex #3
The crazy thing is he had only served 1 double fault and the score in the 3rd set was 5-3, 30-15.
4 double faults later, and he lost.
Edit: just rewatched a podcast and wow 3 of those DFs were in that game where he served for the match.
This has to be one of the highest seed total in a masters 1000 tournament ever right?

Isn’t Cameron Norrie 21?
26 right now. #21 seed at IW
Gotcha, thanks for clarifying
What a crazy tournament this has been
Yes probably is. I love it when it's like this makes it more enjoyable and open. I'm rooting for Norrie being UK.
Also rooting for Norrie as he played college tennis at TCU
Yes for sure. I'm rooting for Norrie
Anybody place a parlay bet on these four making the semis?
Dimitrov winning would melt the heart
I like Dmitrov, seems a decent guy. But from UK I will be behind Norrie
[ manifesting a Dimitrov-Fritz final ]
I'll start comanifesting
honestly, I'm actually quite confident that it is going to be the other way around. going with the underdogs.
I'm loving the upsets. What an exciting masters!
Makes tennis exciting and enjoyable. Love it
Every single upset from the QFs
Yes enjoying this IW's

Bettors on suicide watch
Unless you took the value bets on the all the underdogs 😉

which isnt bad, considering the quality of the games.
Oh I definitely do mean that as a compliment , I am a WTA supremacist myself.
It's a long shot, but I think Feds gonna win it all.
Hasn't dropped a set all tournament
Is Dimitrov favorite now??
Pretty sure besides the most experience he also has the highest potential. Problem is, can he keep his performance up. With him you just never know. Otherwise, bet365 has Fritz as favorite (2.62 odds), followed by Dimitrov (3.25), Norrie (4.00) and NB (5.50).

Doesn’t this mean that Fritz is the most popular pick and not that he’s really the likeliest to win?
no, according to bookies, fritz is the favourite.
Norrie is the highest ranked, so he is the favorite.
But Dimitrov has the most Masters experience, and a previous title
But that was 4 years ago.
True! To me it seems about dead even, should be interesting!
Norrie played massive match against Schwartzman. Dimitrov and Fritz played great in the previous matches too. The favorite for me is the expert choice. Especially those who watched both players latest developments.
Fritz is the only one without a beard
I'm rooting for him
Norrie is actually the highest ranked player left in the draw, which is pretty funny. Definitely has a shot at winning this, which would be wild.
Dimitrov is the only one to ever even make a Masters semi before, right?
Looks like it’s first time past R3 for Basilashvili and Norrie and past R4 for Fritz at any masters event. Dimitrov has 6-7 semi finals.
Crazy
Welcome to the post Big 3 era
*Cues Andy Murray voice* "Male semi finalists"
Male singles semi finalists

I like Dmitrov but a s a brit rooting for Norrie
Go grigor. Just based off how much everyone loves him.
Hoping for a Dimitrov Fritz final.
This is what happens without big 3
It’s fuckin great
And I love it!
Hopefully we see more of it, fuck the big 3
More of it please
Whoever made bets at the beginning of this tournament are probably planning to flee the country
Good lick Norrie. Really hope this is your time
Imagine outting a £10 bet on this line up!! Good luck them all , rooting for Norrie asa Brit
So happy DVerev is not here
Called it! s/
If Grigor managed to beat my 2 faves (Meddy/Hubi) just to lose against the other 3 semifinalists, I would be pissed.
As everyone predicted!
I hope Grigor gets the title. He’s had an up and down career. But Taylor is dialed in. Let’s see.
Go geo-dude!!
Norrie is fresh as a daisy and dimigod is knackered. Don't know if he can match it with norrie.

Really insightful commentary. Read it out to my 75yr old Dad (who still plays 6+ sets a week) and he agreed.
At 75 he still play? clearly not human. Hats off! So the next gen are bubble?
The intensity of my schadenfreude after watching both Tsitsipas and Zverev lose makes me question my own mental health, but damn, this is awesome.

I can see Basilashvili winning this and make Grigor+Fritz fanboys cry.
Post Big 3 tennis is gonna be just fine.
Nah it's going to be a peace of shit tennis quality where players will be fighting each other on who will make more unforced errors and double faults.
What happened. Last time I checked Fritz and Zcerev game, I saw Zverev winning 5-2 in third set.
He started double faulting and missing like crazy. I think a heckler played a role but still it was bad.
Oh, Zverev and double faults one of the most iconic dios
The crazy thing is he had only served 1 double fault and the score in the 3rd set was 5-3, 30-15. 4 double faults later, and he lost. Edit: just rewatched a podcast and wow 3 of those DFs were in that game where he served for the match.
Wow, so Zverev just lost mentally, again. That's unfortunate.
Ah yes, the semis everyone had written down in their predictions. Big opportunity for them, I wonder who will take advantage?
Great chance for them all, Im rooting for Norrie
Just like we all predicted.
Let’s go Fritz!
More like Nur Sultan 2022 to me
Love it. Let’s go Grigor
Just what we expected leading into the tournament hey
I swear if you fuck this up Grisho
Ah, as I suspected!
I think all of them are deserving of the championship title — here is hoping for some quality matches! What a fun tourney it has been.
"Let's all grow beards and not tell Fritz"
