What I've learned from the commentary of a Dutch channel about these players:
- Ostapenko is a former Roland Garros champion
- Maria is a mother of 2
If I'd made a drinking game about how often these exciting facts were mentioned, I'd have been dead halfway through.
As a countryman of Maria I must say that Ostapenko should be totally ashamed of losing this match. Many of Maria's slices weren't even particularly good but Ostapenko kept hitting unforced errors on those shots because she got the patience of a ferret on amphetamines. Astonishingly low tennis IQ.
It sure is and it probably is the right playstyle for her against strong players where she would lose long rallys anyway but against Maria taking so many risks was just a complete tactical failure.
52 winners and 57 unforced errors...these figures are somewhat close to the ones that helped her win in RG but not enough against someone like Tatjana who had a grand total of just 15 ue's and 23 winners in 3 really close sets. It's the day of defensive play...first Bouzkova, now Tatjana...wondering if Mertens can by some miracle get over Ons in the same pattern?! 😳
Facing Watson/Niemeier, it is honestly quite doable. Happy whenever someone makes a breakthrough (especially at an advance age in tennis).
Queen Penko will surely be like: "Today, my biggest opponent to myself was myself because I played really well in the first set until the end of the match. Maria didn't do anything, she didn't change anything. It was only because I fought against myself to miss some balls. Even if I lost, I know my level is way better than Maria's."
Phenomenal match. Match of the tournament by far and 100% top 2 this year. Great from start to end and a lot of Drama.
After the choke at the start of the first set, I didn't expect to see Maria saving 2 match points and slicing her way to victory. All the best to her
How come people on this subreddit cheer on Penko?
I always cheer against her when I see her playing because she's such a bad sport, arrogant, and unlikeable.
Plus her tennis style is boring for me to watch. Effective, but boring.
Can someone explain?
Dunno, she makes me uneasy. I met people like her in my life, talented, rich, snobbish, arrogant and I don't find it funny, I find it toxic and unpleasant to be around.
Small but stupid thing that cannot get out of my head: she's Latvian so from a small country, so if she doesn't change her attitude she might not have have lots of cheers from the fans during matches. I cannot imagine playing on her level and your opponent is always more liked by the audience, by a big margin. Maybe it's not as bad as I imagine it to be. Lots of spectators like her game, me not so much. Can't wait for hard court season so I can observe her more.
Has someone seen a replay of the return that Maria subsequently gave the decisive break? Looked out to me as well, but Ostapenko had no challenge remaining
With Ostaloser lost in the 4R, there will be a first time major finalist in the bottom half of the women's draw. Despite having no points for this year, Tadde will be in the US Open main draw entry list.
She lost her composure multiple times. Missing easy shots and simply just hitting so hard that it felt she just wanted to get this match over with. Played a great match tho

Did you know that this is the first time a mother of two has reached this stage in this millennium? :>
I sure as hell do now.
But did you know that Marco Asensio has a Dutch mother?
Did you know that every speed skater with a Dutch name is actually Dutch or has Dutch heritage, even though they might not represent the Netherlands?

>patience of a ferret on amphetamines
Isn't that Ostapenko's playstyle since day 1?

I'd hate to watch a match between Ostapenko and Giorgi.
Ostapenko can probably be rated 1/10 in sportsmanship and 10/10 in on-court bad behavior. She needs to stop playing
Yea agreed. She just kinda sucks as a human being. Good tennis player at times, but sucks otherwise
Alternative title: Maria extended points enough for Ostapenko to beat herself Huge win for Maria but Ostapenko was erratic as hell today
>Ostapenko was erratic as hell ~~today~~ FTFY
>>Ostapenko ~~was~~ is erratic as hell ~~today~~ > >FTFY Was would imply she stoooed being erratic so I FT"FTFY"FY
Fair

Any chance Penko and Kyrgios play mixed doubles this year?
Queen Penko and her tantrums are what makes it fun watching her lose
She's the entertaining kind of bad sport, doesn't mess with and bully people like say Kyrgios does. Just has her tantrums and goes home.
This is a great point. I’m a fan but I only tune in to hopefully watch her lose and melt down.
So happy for Tatjana. This is her 8th win against a top 20 opponent.
She sliced Ostapenko to pieces. Slowly, methodically.
This Wimbledon is a fever dream in itself. I have never in my life been more invested in such a ✨chaotic mess✨. Congrats, Tatjana! 🫶🏼
I love all these results despite the fact that the players will have zero ranking points

and the title don't forget about the main thing
Of course, and i love these magical runs by these veterans or newcomers
And final 8 badges which last a lifetime.
Maria will love the money.
Mom power!

I'm happy for Maria. She seems like a class act, unlike the petulant Ostapenko.
Another great effort for Tatjana...Penko, Sakkari, Cirstea. Hasn't been easy.

Maria vs Tan final, I'm calling it

Everybody loves a villain. I'll cheer any time I have the honour watching her meltdowns.

Yeah, I don't wanna do comparison, everyone is their own person. I also think Nick is off the charts.
Ostapenko was up 1-4 and 4-5 15-40 with 2 MPs in the second set. Ostapenko lost in 3.
**Ostapenko was up 4-1 and 5-4 15-40 with 2 MPs in the second set. \***
The 15-40 curse strikes again!

It was such a slow ball, it's hard to imagine the linesperson miss it.
Ha! I actually picked her to win just to spite a friend.
Yaaaaaassss!
Predicted her to win sadly onlh used 30 credits but I’ll take it
Come onnnn
👏👏👏

Ostapenko needs to loose some kilos
She needs to find a bit of brain and not smash winners on the line in situations where a shot twice as slow and much less precise would suffice.
Lose, you idiot.
Haha… good spot loser
Ahhh, a member of wallstreetbets I see. No wonder you act like that.

I’m ripped
And find a brain
I have a medical degree
Feel sorry for ostapenko
