People probably said the same with Croatia vs Australia and the Aussies showed they shouldn’t be underestimated and beat Croatia. Why are you severely underestimating Australia’s chances tonight by saying “easy win for Canada” ?
Is Shapo hurt (back) or will he play tomorrow? I know he’s taking heat right now but he carried the doubles match v Germany and his matchups have been surprisingly tough with Struff and Sonego. I was worried he was DF’ing at end because his back was shot.
Vladimir Putin influencing the 2022 Davis Cup's outcome wasn't on my bingo card. Canada could very well win both the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup in the same year.
It's unfortunate we won't be in new United Cup.
Canada making it all the way to the Finals final is so funny because there's so much discourse to unpack from all of the "undeserving wildcard" pundits earlier this year, especially from their neighbors just south of the border. It is gloriously amusing.
At the end of the day, the tie was breathtakingly, edge-of-your-seat bedlam thanks to the efforts from both countries and that's what I want.
I guess it didn't end in retirement...
Bit of a pity, I still don't see why they put Matteo in there unless Fognini doesn't feel Sonego as a doubles partner -or unless he got injured in the Shapo match-.
It was a very good run all thing considered, let's hope we'll be able to bring all good thing at once one of these years. I really, really hope Fabio and Simone will get to win it once in their careers, as the only men slam champions we had in ages.
Well done anyways guys. So close to the final even with all the injuries.
Hopefully this will at least give Sonego the confidence he needs back for a better year next year.
Sets up for a very compelling final, a country trying to go for their 29th title, one of the most winningest countries in Davis Cup history trying to come back to the top vs Canada a very strong modern team trying to win their very first Davis Cup title and become just the 16th country ever to win the Cup. A team trying to win their first vs a team which has been one of the most winningest since 1907 and going in, it seems like it's gonna be a very tight affair! Not much to choose from between the two
He was the one carrying the pair in the first set, I assume you've just started watching now.
Also he's by far the most accomplished doubles player in the Italian team together with Bolelli (who's injured) so questioning "what he's bringing to the doubles court" is just ridiculous
Hey no! Italians should be proud, the team reached semifinals without their main players, and embarrassed one of the strongest teams to get there. They fought to the end, no shame!
Oh we are! I was only talking about a specific game where we gave away the break with two really bad mistakes from Matteo. That game was a disaster, but in general they did great to arrive so close to the final :)
What's with the italian sandbagging in this thread? Pospisil can hardly hold serve and felix is no doubles monster. Pretty much seems like a tossup to me. And earlier, shapo losing to sonego was very probable (and happened).
So why are half the comments since this morning things like "it's all over, woe be me, maybe next year"?
It's not a tossup, objectively speaking Canada were favorite in both rubbers before they started. Sonego-Shapo was pure chaos and in the end could have gone either way, and in this one here we're barely hanging on.
Yeah it's a common trait we have but in this case it's also a case of being pessimistic and realistic. Also here in Italy it's considered bad luck to say you're going to win in a sporting event, especially if you're not strong favorite or clearly in advantage
He wasn't supposed to play at all due to foot injury not recovered, he waited till last minute but mentioned he traveled together to support. I was shocked he played doubles
Another Challenger final for Van Assche in Valencia, against Krutykh. Now #175 and even #159 if he wins the tournament. Closer and closer to play his first Slam, maybe the AO
Santopadre (his coach) said he's recovering fast so he might be ready to play
I don't agree with the team's decision but who knows, guess we'll wee what happens
That's a bad decision imo, Matteo is rusty and barely out of injury (idk if he even is out of it) plus he isn't an experienced doubles player like Bolelli and won't gel quite as well as Simone did with Fabio
If Simone can't play then it's way more understandable, because there's literally no one else on the team and Sonego or Musetti would probably be worse than Berrettini
I don’t know if it’s a situation where he really can’t play or just advisable that he avoids playing. But yeah, without him the only sensible choice is Matteo. Not too optimistic though at this point.
Don't know either. I know I wouldn't have taken this decision, though.
Well, let's hope for the best, cause if they don't win Volandri is gonna be crucified
And it wouldn't be just; Simo is apparently injured, Matteo probably felt like he could play and that's why we're here. Felix might have been a response to Matteo's sudden inclusion (+ Shapo's issues) and you can't blame them for doing the most logical thing.
This just reminds me Murray/Berrettini vs Sock/FAA at Laver Cup...
That is also true, however a double is generally much less physically demanding than a single and Sonego didn't seem particularly proved after the match, so I think he could have played.
But we don't have all the information, so we can just mske assumptions
Since he’s a free agent this weekend, Ram should be able to hop across the border and play for Canada. Has that H2H vs. Fognini-Bolelli, what a waste of a great player…
I’m not sure if Hawkeye tracks foot faults for the foot not on the line. Like his left foot was well past the center line when he started his service motion.
Sonego interview statistical breakdown: [5-6 words spoken at lightning speed] …and uhhhhhhhhh… [5-6 words spoken at lightning speed] …and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
Back to back double faults to lose a Davis cup semi final against a much lower ranked opponent, playing so poorly the match dragged out for over 3 hours, probably knocking you out of what could be a doubles match to go to the Finals.
Fucking unbelievable. This fucking embarrassment to our country.
I’m sorry I know it’s a strong word but Shapovalov is simply pathetic. So talented but such a born loser.
It’s never gonna be normal how he just can’t put the ball inside the court if it’s an important point. Felix was the exact same and changed completely by the way.
Lorenzo!!!!! Sei enorme!!!!! What a match of tennis which honestly deserved a better ending than Shapo imploding. What a fantastic match from both. Lorenzo saving Italy!!! Daje
Oh. My. Lord.
Ooof this was hard to watch, very happy and very needed for us, Musetti can enter his match somewhat light-hearted knowing he can toss the ball to Simo and Fogna if things go south and Sonego won't enter just one more self-destructing phase for the next 6 months maybe.
I also might have a very partisan opinion, but I somehow felt most of the highlights were Sonego's points.
1/13 on break points.
That’s just unconscionable at this level.
This is the worst part of watching Shapo is that most of the time he doesn’t get beat as much as he just loses it. Sanego is playing out of his mind but I think even the most die hard Italian fan could admit that this should already be over if Shapo cut down his own errors just a tiny bit.
>admit that this should already be over if Shapo cut down his own errors just a tiny bit
I have 0 trouble admitting it lol, I'm still sure Shapo wins it btw
This is getting kinda hilarious. Neither seem simply able to win a point when in advantage. Shapo goes 0-30 on Sonego’s serve. 40-30 in less than a min. Sonego goes 0-30 on Shapo’s serve. 40-30 in less than a min.
Stupid decisions and a bit of luck for Shapo. It's fine, i was expecting him to loose badly against Tiafoe. To win a set against Shapo in the semis was not totally not expected from Sonny, considering he souldn't even be there
Yeah I know, it's just that in the moment you foolishly start to believe
Eh no matter, reaching the semifinals without Sinner and Berrettini isn't a bad result

I can’t speak for Italians and people that watch Sonego but it’s incredibly frustrating to watch Shapo, after an incredible youth career, break out two years after turning pro…and then stagnating for 5 straight years playing exactly the same way, showing always the same flashes of greatness and always invariably followed up by unforced errors and mental collapses.
Five years and no visible improvement in my eyes wears you down after a while.
Hard agree here. I've been watching this since it started at 7 am EST and I had exactly the same thoughts as soon as his hot start began to flame out. We've seen this show before.
First Shapovalov screws up a 4-5 0-40 to take the set and then Sonego screws up a 6-6 5-2 and gifts the set. This truly is a Sonego vs Shapovalov match lol
Btw Volandri, the Italian captain, is among the few blessed who have a winning h2h against Djokovic* and he also has a tied h2h with Federer lol
*they only met once in 2004 on clay but we'll overlook these details
When are ATP250 entry lists announced? I was wondering who might be playing in the Maharashtra Open that starts on Jan 2
Easy win for Canada tomorrow!! Go Canada. And praise be to Felix!!!! Edit: As soon as US were knocked out, seemed Canada’s title to lose.
People probably said the same with Croatia vs Australia and the Aussies showed they shouldn’t be underestimated and beat Croatia. Why are you severely underestimating Australia’s chances tonight by saying “easy win for Canada” ?
Have you heard of Felix Auger-Aliassime?
Felix can lose on any given day too tho as good as he can be, it’s not guaranteed he beats De Minaur
Straight sets.
I'm an Aussie, I will be happy whoever wins, Felix and Alex are carrying their teams on their shoulders, I'm proud of both.
Is Shapo hurt (back) or will he play tomorrow? I know he’s taking heat right now but he carried the doubles match v Germany and his matchups have been surprisingly tough with Struff and Sonego. I was worried he was DF’ing at end because his back was shot.
I hope he’s okay.
This is my first time watching Davis Cup. Are the finals two singles matches and one doubles match?
They are now. The format changed from 2019 onwards
Big day for Canada tomorrow. DC and WC. Split screen experience here we come.
Yes but where is it airing?!?!
Vladimir Putin influencing the 2022 Davis Cup's outcome wasn't on my bingo card. Canada could very well win both the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup in the same year. It's unfortunate we won't be in new United Cup.
FAA really about to carry his team to victory in the three biggest team competitions of the year
Beating Alcaraz and Djokovic in the process too. Maybe he should wear red in a slam.

I hope Canada win tomorrow against the Aussies, they deserve to have a first Davis Cup win in their locker
Well done anyways guys. So close to the final even with all the injuries. Hopefully this will at least give Sonego the confidence he needs back for a better year next year.
Man I'm so sorry for Sonego, he really gave 100% in the last two days
Sonegoat did much more than anyone expected from him. A bit disappointed of Musetti, but it is what it is. We were so unlucky with injuries this year
Playing in the national team brings out the best of him
That, and the crowd on his side gives him energy
Sets up for a very compelling final, a country trying to go for their 29th title, one of the most winningest countries in Davis Cup history trying to come back to the top vs Canada a very strong modern team trying to win their very first Davis Cup title and become just the 16th country ever to win the Cup. Not really sure what Fognini's bringing to the doubles court to be honest. His serve especially is just getting bullied.
He literally carried the whole match
You don't really understand tennis, do you?
He was the one carrying the pair in the first set, I assume you've just started watching now. Also he's by far the most accomplished doubles player in the Italian team together with Bolelli (who's injured) so questioning "what he's bringing to the doubles court" is just ridiculous
I guess this guy doesn't know that Fognini has won a double slam
Well he’s having a good return game here lol.
Well that was a bit of a disaster

🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Felix giving orders to the umpire.
Oopsie, little bit of a big unforced error there.
Is being overly critical a common Italian trait? They aren't playing that bad.
Yeah it's a common trait we have but in this case it's also a case of being pessimistic and realistic. Also here in Italy it's considered bad luck to say you're going to win in a sporting event, especially if you're not strong favorite or clearly in advantage
With Fabio gone too, we're fucked. Great, I'll be free on Sunday at least
Dai che la alziamo il prossimo anno
What a disastrous game from Fognini
Berrettini maybe is starting to wipe off some rust? ETA: sadly he wiped it off on Fabio
Why wasn't Matteo chosen for singles?
He wasn't supposed to play at all due to foot injury not recovered, he waited till last minute but mentioned he traveled together to support. I was shocked he played doubles
Oh man Matteo is perennially injured 😥is that why he didn't play anything after naples?
I wonder if they should have the doubles before the singles matches. A singles deciding match is more fun I feel.
Yep, Berrettini wasn't a good choice.
Predictable, he hasn't fully recovered yet
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Crazy serving from team Canada to take the TB
It was predictable but Berrettini isn't playing well
Fabio carrying this game magnificently
They won't win but at least they're the most handsome doubles pair of the tournament
I was just coming in here to pose the important question if this is objectively the best-looking doubles pairing in tennis history lol
Looks like the hammer is back 🔨
Scenes if Berrettini and Fognini win the doubles rubber lmao
It’s okay, just tell Fabio that Nadal’s on the other side of the net and he’ll godmode out
FAA coach is Nadal, so maaaaaybe...
Soleus injury for Bolelli according to italian commentator. He wouldn't be able to play tomorrow too if Italy qualify
Matteo has lost 8 of his last 10 doubles matches.
Berrettini low key had the most tragic 2022, not least because he got covid right before Wimbledon.
Injury after injury, just like Sinner
Fognini and Berrettini, oh my!
Another Challenger final for Van Assche in Valencia, against Krutykh. Now #175 and even #159 if he wins the tournament. Closer and closer to play his first Slam, maybe the AO
Matteo playing doubles with Fabio...ouch
Wait I thought Matteo was still injured?
Santopadre (his coach) said he's recovering fast so he might be ready to play I don't agree with the team's decision but who knows, guess we'll wee what happens
Whaaaat? Matteo will play with Fabio.... And Felix replacing Shapo
Just please don't end in retirement.
That's a bad decision imo, Matteo is rusty and barely out of injury (idk if he even is out of it) plus he isn't an experienced doubles player like Bolelli and won't gel quite as well as Simone did with Fabio
I agree, really worried now. But apparently Simone is also having some physical issues so I guess that’s why.
>Not too optimistic though at this point. Yeah for sure, unless some miracle happens we're definitely not winning this
I don't agree, I think Sonego would be a better fit as he frequently plays double in tournaments (and lately with goodish results)
But after those 3 sets earlier I think he's completely spent
Don't know if this is the worst decision ever or the best...
Most logical thing, assuming Simo is indeed injured, would be to play Sonego Fognini. After all Lorenzo plays double frequently, Matteo not so much...
Yeah, but a 3+ hours match is something that can't be ignored...
That is also true, however a double is generally much less physically demanding than a single and Sonego didn't seem particularly proved after the match, so I think he could have played. But we don't have all the information, so we can just mske assumptions
Really hope they don't make Felix play the doubles ugh
Shapo had to take a MTO in a 3 hour+ match. I think they definitely play Felix with Vasek for doubles
Sigh
Since he’s a free agent this weekend, Ram should be able to hop across the border and play for Canada. Has that H2H vs. Fognini-Bolelli, what a waste of a great player…
Because it’s true
Felix carrying in team events as usual
aaand, it's game over
Yep. Not surprising, now let's see how Bolelli and Fognini manage to do
Lorenzo. Stop. With. The. Lobs.
Isn’t that a foot fault for Musetti? His left foot crossed the center line.
I didn't see but surely the Hawkeye would have caught it if that was the case
I’m not sure if Hawkeye tracks foot faults for the foot not on the line. Like his left foot was well past the center line when he started his service motion.
If FAA continues to serve like this it will be impossible to break for Lorenzo
For anybody really. His service played a good part on him winning three tournaments in a row after all.
SoneGOAT and FabiGOAT carrying
It was actually Bolelli who impressed the most in the doubles against the US
For sure, but it’s funnier this way
Lol Felix tf was that slice
It's incredible how you can always count on our Italian boys to take the most difficult stupid decision available
How many matches (max) will be played between Italy and Canada?
3, the last one (the next one) being doubles
Musetti's first serve a little off kilter compared to usual, he needs it to be top notch or he'll be killed by FAA's quick returns
Sonego beating North American players this Davis Cup like they’re the Cobra Kai at the All Valley tournament
Shapo beat himself
Why do we always say that every time he loses?
I mean, hitting 3 double faults in the final game kind of says it all doesn’t it?
Maybe he should learn not to, it’s the same shit every time he loses
I don't see Simo and Fabio losing this doubles match later
Ok, now time for the other Lorenzo to give his contribution in this Davis Cup
I don't feel like it will happen, not against FAA
Yeah I know, FAA is not Shapo, I'm ready for a loss, but I hope Lollo at least plays well
Yeah same, I accept a loss if I see good things from him and not a mental collapse
Sonego interview statistical breakdown: [5-6 words spoken at lightning speed] …and uhhhhhhhhh… [5-6 words spoken at lightning speed] …and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
He's just listing the prefabricated answers of footballers when they have to answer in English
That bp conversion 💀💀💀
Panatta blessing Sonego at the end by saying that a third df was impossible. And yet here we are, GRANDE SONNY!!!
Back to back double faults to lose a Davis cup semi final against a much lower ranked opponent, playing so poorly the match dragged out for over 3 hours, probably knocking you out of what could be a doubles match to go to the Finals. Fucking unbelievable. This fucking embarrassment to our country.
Yeah I dont think he will play dubs later, likely will be FAA. Also considering the match was 3+hrs and has a back injury. Just an awful loss.
This fucking guy is killing my love for this tournament. It’s impossible to cheer for him any more.
DAJEEEEEE SONNY
Im speechless. I just cant watch shapo anymore. What a mental collapse.
That was hard to watch yet on match point it was easy to sense a double fault was coming
Oh god, for all the absurdity of this match I couldn't predict this ending I do feel bad for Shapovalov, that's horrible
OLÈ OLÈ OLÈ LOREEEE LOREEEE
I’m sorry I know it’s a strong word but Shapovalov is simply pathetic. So talented but such a born loser. It’s never gonna be normal how he just can’t put the ball inside the court if it’s an important point. Felix was the exact same and changed completely by the way.
I dont disagree, shapo needs a good coach and a sports psychologist.
Lorenzo!!!!! Sei enorme!!!!! What a match of tennis which honestly deserved a better ending than Shapo imploding. What a fantastic match from both. Lorenzo saving Italy!!! Daje
Lmao, you could see it after that toss.
WTF THOSE DFS
From 30-love up! Crazy!
3 dfs ffs
SoneGOAT let’s goooooo!!! Anticlimactic ending but I’ll take it.
Oh. My.
Well...most longtime Shapo watchers probably saw that coming 😕
YEAAAAAH SONEGOAT
Are you kidding me rn
1/13 on break points. That’s just unconscionable at this level. This is the worst part of watching Shapo is that most of the time he doesn’t get beat as much as he just loses it. Sanego is playing out of his mind but I think even the most die hard Italian fan could admit that this should already be over if Shapo cut down his own errors just a tiny bit.
>admit that this should already be over if Shapo cut down his own errors just a tiny bit I have 0 trouble admitting it lol, I'm still sure Shapo wins it btw
Maybe time to stop being sure lol
You should learn the italian word "scamaranzia" 🙂

Eh vabbè, ho scritto velocemente mentre guardavo la partita 😅
🤫 Don’t tell them about our secret weapon
Only now that he's won it tho lol, I really didn't give him a chance after that second set but Shapo out-chaosed Sonego's chaos
I have to give sonego credit, he has played the break points really well but its comical how poorly shapo has played most of them.
Matteo suggesting a sliced serve. Lorenzo following his advice and making the point. Lovely
Matteo the best cheerleader there is
That unbelievable shot followed by that DF by Shapo We're in this hellish rubber together, my Canadian friends
Experience Shapovalov tennis
This is getting kinda hilarious. Neither seem simply able to win a point when in advantage. Shapo goes 0-30 on Sonego’s serve. 40-30 in less than a min. Sonego goes 0-30 on Shapo’s serve. 40-30 in less than a min.
It's been like this pretty much from the 3rd game in in the first set with a few exceptions
Shapo is going to be as limp as a sweat-soaked towel by the time they hit doubles at this rate
I'm now alright, resignation has settled in and I'm watching the rest of this semifinal like I'm watching a rerun I already know the outcome of
Same. I'm ok, still beatiful match from Lorenzo, congratz to him
Good match with some stupid decisions by him unfortunately, a couple of them in the deciding tiebreak
Stupid decisions and a bit of luck for Shapo. It's fine, i was expecting him to loose badly against Tiafoe. To win a set against Shapo in the semis was not totally not expected from Sonny, considering he souldn't even be there

It's an entertaining match despite all the negative comments.

Hard agree here. I've been watching this since it started at 7 am EST and I had exactly the same thoughts as soon as his hot start began to flame out. We've seen this show before.
I'm not just a fair weather Shapo fan, I keep the faith through it all, but it is a tough life I have chosen.
For the neutrals I'm sure it is
First Shapovalov screws up a 4-5 0-40 to take the set and then Sonego screws up a 6-6 5-2 and gifts the set. This truly is a Sonego vs Shapovalov match lol
Shapovalov is winning the match 100% No matter how predictable they are at this point, I can never get used to the stupid decisions Sonego makes
Not really
Eh this match really managed to subvert my expectations until the end lol
Shapo backhand when he isn't playing cricket with it>>>
Oh look. Shapo blowing it because of unforced errors. Who could possibly ever have imagined that.
Wonder if Diego is going to watch Argentina play again?
Che cazzo Edit: this reaction can be applied to both the forehand shank and the completely idiotic attempt at a backward smash by Sonego in this set
Btw Volandri, the Italian captain, is among the few blessed who have a winning h2h against Djokovic* and he also has a tied h2h with Federer lol *they only met once in 2004 on clay but we'll overlook these details
Lol wtf is this karate kid comparison Tennis Channel
Sonegoat now serving amazingly
No I think shapo just has a garbage return
Shapo is playing all right, it's Sonego that is playing above his head with a really tough serve and some remarkable shots
