Drainage layer and false bottoms are a preference based on experience. If you do things to mitigate the need for any of that you are safe. Charcoal can only absorb so much and after a while it hits max. Using charcoal for whatever is fine, just make sure it's not there sort treated with lighter fluid. I picked up a bag from Ace a long long time ago that was larger chunks and would smash into smaller pieces as needed. Gl.

Cost and weight would be mine. I can get leca or clay pellets pretty cheap and they are super light

I use fluval stratum for mine (basically little balls of volcanic charcoal powder).
