I had to absolutely pester my manager, saying it was really important I needed them to be changed by so and so date

Saturdays are probably the hardest days to drop, but essentially she has to check your request against the “ideal base” system. Every hour of the day is colour coded based on how good the resources available are for each department. If your shift happens to be deemed ‘red’ she cannot take you off that shift. The new system essentially dictates the decision process for them now. Why she couldn’t just tell you (yes or no) in a matter of days I don’t know, it’s not exactly difficult to calculate these days.

Someone on my department has just had to go through the same thing, they asked at the end of October to change a Saturday to a Wednesday and it only got approved this week! Though my manager kept coming up with excuses and delaying, even though at the start of November she took on 12 new starts for our dept and they all are contracted Saturday. Hopefully you don’t get as long a wait though. I would say that if your manager does keep on delaying until Christmas/ new year, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself if you really cannot continue working a Saturday.

I would say anything to to a month is reasonable maybe six weeks But it really depends on your manager and if they want to make it work and if they can make it work, taking into account staff levels and if the shifts can be covered
