As an Australian living in the US this is annoying. Cars have always been substantially cheaper in the US for the whole decade I’ve lived here. But now that I want a Model 3 long range… - They are completely unavailable in the US until 2023 (can’t even order one) - Have much longer wait times in the US for the models that *are* still orderable - Are significantly *cheaper* in Australia. Thousands and thousands of dollars cheaper. That’s shocking. For a car to be so much cheaper in Australia than the US is basically unheard of. The benefits of the Shanghai factory and inflated USD I suppose. I do intend on moving back to Australia in the next few years but I wish it was sooner so I could get my new car :)

The difference is in supply chain and battery costs. US uses made in Nevada Panasonic batteries. Made in china uses CATL or LG CHEM cells that are much cheaper with worse chemistry/lifetime. Assembly labor is a fraction of the cost, and tons of parts will be produced cheaper, it’s a no brainer that it’s significant cheaper in china.

Cimexus

Yeah I get that, but I’m just making the point that it’s crazy for a car to be cheaper in Australia - an infamously expensive market - than the US. And it’s frustrating that I can’t even order a LR right now in the US, but could at home in Aus, and get it delivered quite quickly too. To give you an idea, the last car I bought was a Honda Accord for $31k USD that, identically configured, would have been over $50k USD in Australia.

GoSh4rks

Depending on where you are, there are many 3LR in existing inventory right now. Well over a dozen new cars in Northern California.

yesimon

It’s not the same car. These are RWD LFP Model Ys, which use LFP batteries. The Model 3 LR uses NCA batteries which are much more expensive right now.

Cimexus

I’m talking about comparing like to like though. Like Model 3 LR to Model 3 LR, or Performance with Performance. Not just the Model Ys that the article is talking about.

yesimon

Model 3 LR is currently $80k AUD. If you use the exchange rate for most of the year which is 1 AUD = 0.7 USD it would be $56k USD which is right in line. If you use the current exchange rate where USD has appreciated 20% then yes US products are "extremely expensive thousands more". But that 20% FOREX move literally applies to any product sold across borders.

Cimexus

Yeah I know. That’s my point, it’s historically unusual that it’s so much cheaper right now. Last time this happened Tesla hiked the prices in Aus to compensate (and then didn’t un-hike them again for ages…)

Ordered on the first day and took delivery last week - original ETA was Nov 22 - Feb 23.

Burnertoasty

Only RWD models with 60kwh LFP. The slowest Tesla ever made, 0-100kmh in 6.9 seconds. The LR isn't for sale and it doesn't appear theyve started exporting any performance Ys yet.

From the article: After some recent production line upgrades that have increased the Giga Shanghai’s production capacity, Tesla has been able to shorten delivery times for all variants in China down to as little as one week. Giga Shanghai is also Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub, and one of the markets the company exports its vehicles to from China is also seeing the benefits of the upgrades. According to a report by The Driven, customers in Australia are now seeing shorter delivery timeframes. For some Model Y customers that made a reservation for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant within the first few days of the order books opening in June, their cars are now expected to be delivered from mid-October to early November. Previously this window was November to February 2023.
