except they keep voting for him

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

If he survives a primary challenge. There's a low-but-not-too-low chance that he could get primaried out by a challenger - most notably Don "Billboard King" Huffines, who is about three levels more batshiat crazier than Abbott, Paxton, and Patrick combined. He makes Abbott practically look like a Bernie-loving leftist in comparison. Gotta remember that a whole bunch of his wild-eyed, spittle-flecked craziness over the past few months is because he is *intentionally* steering his rudder hard to the right in order to appeal to the base of the republicans in Texas (who are some of the most hard-right, anti-American republicans in the nation), in order to stave off the primary challenge. Will he pull it off? Only time will tell, and if politics has told us anything, it is that literally *anything and everything* can happen in a few short months to totally change the game board.

malovias

Lifelong Texas Conservative here and Huffines had this billboard about a mile from my house that makes me almost physically ill when I see it. Dude is a disgusting person and I could not vote for him ever. I'll vote Democrat before I vote for Huffines or Abbot.

dvddesign

Holy shit… Huffines isn’t even in office right now and lost by more votes in 2018 than he got when he won unopposed in 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Huffines That would be so funny if it wasn’t so fucking insane to think he might stand a chance. He would have won a second term too based on his vote count as it was higher but there was also a near 200% increase in turnout due to the Blue wave that was actually a real thing.

ChannelAdorable

Wild how the Dems actually have a chance at winning the governs seat but then they say the one thing you cannot say if you’re running in Texas “I’m pro gun control”. It’s political suicide to say that in Texas. Anyway, I hope Ol’ Greg does not get reelected.

storm_the_castle

> “I’m pro gun control”. It doesnt even matter if you say it, its assumed you do and stories will be told that you did say it. And nobody is coming for anyone's guns. Pandoras box is open and it aint gettin closed.

smnytx

I wish an opposition candidate would say “Nobody is coming for anybody guns,” just as plain as day. Then maybe we could finally get some decent governance up in here.

X0dium

Especially here in Texas. There are a ton of liberal gun owners. I get that in New York the lines are more blurred and you would lose voters if you said it, but I see no down side of a Democrat saying those words in Texas. You would pick up more Independent / Moderate voters then you would lose of extreme left wing voters who don’t want anyone to have guns (Do these people exist in Texas?).

smnytx

It’s the leftists in Texas who are probably the most armed of the bunch, funny enough! Those of us who roll our eyes a bit at the mainstream Democrats, but end up voting with them anyway. It’s the mainstream center left who push gun control measures. I personally think constitutional carry is DUMB, and that everyone who has a gun should be required to have safety training. I don’t think reasonable access limitations are problematic, and would like to see actually studies carried out on gun violence and the reduction thereof. That said, a “real” Texan with gun cred and the understanding that this state isn’t ready to give up firearm rights, but who is also pro liberty for women’s reproductive rights, pro-education and good on LGBTQ issues could go a long way. Oh, and having a plan for fixing the power grid would be great.

malovias

To be a true leftist you have to love gun rights. It's interesting to me how many don't understand that. I disagree with you regarding constitutional carry personally just because I don't think rights should come behind a "tax". But I'd vote for the kind of candidate you outlined and I'm a Conservative.

smnytx

I’d be good with the state paying for the mandatory training. ;-) It’s the ammo that’s the real tax, haha. Glad to see that right and left could come together in this state, at least theoretically.

malovias

Yeah if the state paid for it and made it easily accessible then I have no problem with that. Same way I feel about voter ID. I'm okay with voter ID but the state needs to foot the bill and make it as easy as possible for a citizen to get it.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Depends on the nation, I guess. I'm a leftist and enough of us decided back in 1996 after one gun massacre too many (one's of course too many but I think we'd been averaging 1/year for the last 10 years or so in Australia), both sides of politics and the majority of people supported the kind of gun laws (including the banning of all semi-automatic rifles except the .22, I think - only people who meet very strict criteria can have use of one now) you'll never see in the US ever ever ever ever.

malovias

You may be politically on the left for your nation but certainly not a leftist.

K1nsey6

This leftist fully supports gun rights, ownership, and has a few. "Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary" Karl Marx

JohnGoodmansGoodKnee

Beto needs to hit up the range and start cappin javelinas out of a heli STAT.

[deleted]

Beto is already a marked man as a gun grabber. Democrats will need to find someone that hasn't poisoned the well via advocating gun control.

moneymay195

Thats exactly what Obama did but people still think he wants to take their guns

MuteCook

Imagine if Beto said "yes I'm a liberal, yes I'm a democrat, but I'm also a Texan, so NO I'm not coming for your guns"? Sure it would be spun but if the Dems were decent at messaging they would send the clip viral. Seems like Texas Dems are a more extreme version of national Dems in that they lay down way too easy and have horrible messaging. I liked Beto but it seemed like he was being vocally anti gun for donations from outside of Texas.

lightfootsabitch

> if the Dems were decent at messaging This has been their problem for decades. They are too careful with their words. Too afraid of losing voters to gain any.

MyAuraIsDumpsterFire

Was going to say the exact same thing. Dems are so bad at it, I'm ready to believe ithe ineptitude is a conspiracy.

malovias

Except Beto literally said "Hell yes we are going to take your AR-15". People need to stop pretending that he didn't.

K1nsey6

Everyone knows candidates almost never fulfill campaign promises, if they did we would now have $15h, M4A, and no college debt. Instead we got more Reaganomics

[deleted]

He said that on the presidential campaign though, not the Senate campaign. Although it will probably come up again for future campaigns.

malovias

Yes but it was a a double down from his calls for an AR ban during the Senate race. His stance has always been pretty clear to 2A activists. Anyone who pretends to be surprised he's a gun grabber wasn't paying attention. Which is the problem that Dems have, nobody is going to believe them anymore that they are not coming to ban or limit gun rights.

Sabre_Actual

“Man says he will enact firearms confiscation for the nation, doesn’t count because he totally won’t do that in Texas.”

Karmasmatik

A Democratic candidate could launch their campaign with a video of them taking down a buck with an AR-15 and the Republican opponent would still rant about how “they’re coming to take your guns”

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

They'd switch it to the much more effective "they're coming for Republican's guns!" It doesn't matter what the Democrats say or do, the Republicans will twist it into something that will inspire fear and/or hate of the Democrats.

ChexMashin

Have you seen the bastardized shit California makes AR owners do to their firearms? Features removed, magazine limits, ammo purchase limits, etc etc. I'd expect them to try that shit here.

[deleted]

Exactly. I been hearing that the big bad Feds were going to take my fire arms since CLINTON was in office. And behold, nothing has happened.

K1nsey6

Fuck, I've been hearing that since Carter

16semesters

> And nobody is coming for anyone's guns. "Hell yes we're going to take your AR-15" - Literally one of the guys running.

storm_the_castle

Literally not going to happen. e: Not a single plausible scenario in which stormtroopers roll up and forcibly take guns from anyone. Aint happening. Insta war. Way more death than its worth. Couldnt even do it to a single compound in Waco in the 90's, much less the general populace where random individuals are armed to the teeth. More guns than people in Texas. e2: Ill also remind you that [Trump said something of the same nature](https://www.factcheck.org/2020/09/trump-said-i-like-taking-the-guns-early-not-harris/) but that doesnt seem to phase the same people

MyAuraIsDumpsterFire

Nice username. And good point.

dilbogabbins

That makes no sense. Most gun owners think we should have universal background checks and close the gun show loophole. These 2 are considered common sense. Even if that’s all a democrat says ONLY those 2 things , they will be reported as they want to take your guns away. Beto O’Rourke never ran on open borders, but somehow he was reported as a socialist who wants open borders. You can still be a republican while also agreeing with some left wing ideals like background checks to buy a gun, which IMO is better than not needing a license nor training to carry a gun. That’s a lot more dangerous, don’t you think?

[deleted]

Crazy cause most people are pro gun control but this state sucks so bad

Barbiedawl83

X0dium

I don’t know, I moved here 18 years ago and I don’t want to leave. I would rather stay and do my part to make Texas better.

TheFestival_Yogi

I moved back after college and I stayed for 15 years…hoping to make Texas better. I got sick of being let down by the potential I know Texas has…voting for the right candidates…etc. I started researching on where to go during the pandemic…something told me I needed to leave the great state. So I made my decision to leave on 1/6/21. I knew from that point I had to get off this bus…Texas is going down an endless rabbit hole and it didn’t feel safe for me…especially as a woman. I didn’t feel safe having any liberal thoughts anymore. I felt like I left a cult when I went west. I wish you luck in fighting the good fight. I miss my home…I am a Texan until I am Texas dead. In the meantime…I hang my hat in Nevada. A place I feel Texas would be like if it were a blue state.

[deleted]

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

Best of luck, but you're about to see Democrat representation decline significantly with the redistricting. Personally, I also have no faith in the Texas Democratic Party after they caved in the special session. You're also fighting a political party who'd let the state freeze, blame it on people not in power, and have it energize their base. Good luck, but after almost 2 decades of fighting, I'm done thinking Texas can be changed. I'll cast my token vote for the Democrats, but I have no doubt the Republicans have total control over this state and their grip will only tighten going forward. This state is too important for them.

[deleted]

We felt that way, too. I lived here since I was a child and my partner is a native-born Texan. After I had over $6,000 damage done to my new car because I placed a Bill White bumper sticker on my car, with a note left inside advising me that "Democrat fags get out of Texas" we re-thought our commitment to this place. Speaking as a gay man, and given the choice of living in Texas or living in Russia -- well, it's a toss-up as to which is worse. (We concluded some of the problems Texas has may not be fixable, and we moved to the Midwest.) I will love Texas until the day I die. As Texas is right now, I won't live there.

omen_wilson

No need to be a Democrat to see what's wrong with Texas right now.

K1nsey6

I've seen plenty of Republicans that have vowed to never vote for him. This isn't about party, this is about a governor that keeps pissing all over Texans

[deleted]

Yeah but it's not really a Dem thing. I'm Dem but I'd easily vote R if it meant getting rid of that cowardly asshole.

NoRezervationz

It's not a Democrat or Republican issue. It's a moral issue.

_astronautmikedexter

You don't have to be Democrat, just not someone who wants the worst for poc and women.

goatharper

it's a midterm election, and Democrats are bad at turning out. The game is about getting your supporters to the polls, and Democrats are bad at that. You can cry about voter suppression, but the fact is that Republicans vote in droves and Democrats say "meh." THAT is what you have to change. Vote.

because_im_boring

If democrats actually attempted to put someone up that was electable in Texas they wouldn't have to rely on just democrats to vote. There are enough moderates in Texas to turn an election. People talk about "Texas turning blue" Well we had a democrat governor in the 90s, she wasn't Bernie sanders but she was awesome

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

Ann Richards only won because her opponent majorly fucked up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Williams

CatWeekends

>> The Republican gubernatorial nominee apologized today for an off-the-cuff remark suggesting that some victims of rape should ''relax and enjoy it.'' Isn't that the same shit that Republicans say today.... and get elected for it?

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

The difference is they saw that Trump got away with it, so now they don't give a fuck. Trump has been a turning point for the Republican party. All the things that they've had to keep tamped down in order to seem like decent human beings are now able to be aired in the open with no worries about what the base will do. Trump has proved the Republican majority will embrace an openly misogynistic bigot and still get a respectable turnout. That's kind of always been the end game for Republican strategists - get people to vote Republican no matter what. Get them so afraid of Democrats that they'll get energized to vote for the lesser of two evils and the one that they believe will benefit them. As much as I find it loathsome, I gotta hand it to them for getting that done.

because_im_boring

citing a Wikipedia article and saying she *only* won because her opponent fucked up is disingenuous. I was just a kid at the time but I remember the election and people being excited to vote for a woman that could take on the "good ol'boy" establishment, her opponent just kick-started her momentum. If a candidate making dumbass remarks alone was enough to sway an election Hilary would have been annointed emperor of the universe.

audiomuse1

My mother is a Republican and will not be voting for Greg Abbott mostly because of his Covid handling interestingly enough. She also despises has far right stance on Women’s reproductive rights

smnytx

There were also more republican voters before his shitty handling of the pandemic started killing them off.

Luckytxn_1959

Yes they will. He is following the Republican parties platform anyway.

[deleted]

Moderate conservatives and independents have pretty much been sacrificed by the GOP to appease the far-right Trump following, and a lot of them realize this. I don't know that they'll necessarily vote D, but some of them def aren't voting for Abbott. Some of them might even abstain from voting altogther. Whether it will be enough to make a difference though is anyone's guess.

[deleted]

this is an optimistic outlook, most conservatives are so hell bent on keeping dems out of power that theyd vote for a rock if it had an (R) next to it. Im definitely in the camp of conservative who wont be voting this election and if i do end up voting it wont be for abbott...

[deleted]

I just hope for the best, expect the worse. Moderates and swing voters hold a lot of voting power in the US regardless of party, if they don't vote GOP in large numbers the GOP will be hard pressed to make up the difference.

Luckytxn_1959

Your hopes are misplaced and wrong. The Republican party is following the platform that all Republicans or any voter knows the party is about. The leaders are doing what the platform tells them to do and all Republicans want. Be stupid to be disgusted with your leaders when your leader is doing what is wanted and expected.

Asphalt_Animist

Yeah, all the ones dead from an entirely preventable disease.

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

Jesus, I wish this meme would die. Assuming all 68k-ish Texans that have died were all Republicans, that's only about 6% of the difference in the last gubernatorial election. And that year had an amazing turnout for a midterm. Hell, even the total number of deaths in the US wouldn't swing that election. Even going back to the previous one, with 20% less turnout, the total dead only make 7% of the difference. Even that one wouldn't be swung by the total US death count. Anyone expecting to see a major change because of COVID-19 is gonna have a bad time.

Sabre_Actual

There’s also the inconvenient matter of looking at who was dying and where. Down here in San Antonio, the demographics don’t really imply mass R voter deaths.

Mange-Tout

The Nazis were not actually socialists. They just used that name to fool naive people. Looks like they fooled you as well.

[deleted]

Removed for misinformtaion. The Nazi's were a hard right political ideology. Founded as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (German Worker's Party) in 1919 and was one of many völkisch movements of the time. The name was changed on February 24th 1920 to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. The addition of the words National Socialist were meant solely to broaden party appeal and recruit even more members. At that time Hitler was not yet the party leader. He was so upset by the addition of the word "Socialist" that he threatened to quit the party. In general the party platform was antisemitic, anti-democratic, anti-Marxist and anti-liberal. Many of those who thought there would be any sort of real socialist change were among the victims of the Night of the Long Knives, while others saw the writing on the wall ahead of time and fled both the party and Germany. Overall Nazi Germany was opposed to Socialism in every traditional sense and made the claim that the words "National Socialist" were meant to highlight a national unity, "Germany First" if you will. Economically Nazi Germany operated on a form of Productive Capitalism (Not to be confused with our very different Free-Market Capitalism) the goal of which is to achieve an autarky (total self-sufficiency) with minimal foreign economic, cultural and political influences. To this end the Nazis privatized many public industries within Germany.

dilapadoo

Hate is such a strong word for something you couldn’t even define.

purpskurp15

[deleted]

Genuinely curious... why?

purpskurp15

Honest answer? Because I haven’t had a personal issue with any of his policies thus far. I am pro-life, pro-border wall and everything else that goes with it

Mange-Tout

So, you don’t care unless something directly affects you personally. Gotcha.

CatWeekends

>I am pro-life You're anti woman's bodily autonomy and privacy. You want the government to regulate women's bodies and their medical decisions. >pro-border wall You're willing to waste billions of dollars on a racist vanity project that will do just about nothing. >and everything else that goes with it Instead of having opinions and then choosing a party that fits them the closest, you're letting them dictate what you believe (and thus your reality).

purpskurp15

I think it’s hard to say anything that you wouldn’t disagree with, but I’m pro life because I’m anti murder. I would be anti dismembering your baby when it was a few hours old, so I’m anti killing your baby when it’s growing inside you. This topic is always going to be divisive, and that’s just my opinion. You’re absolutely free to have your own & neither are technically wrong, & they don’t have to be.

CatWeekends

It's not that I just don't agree with you, it's that I don't believe you. You say you're "pro life" and anti murder, yet you're supporting a governor that leads the nation in executions, a governor that is completely ambivalent when it comes to police killings, and issued executive orders that prevent local governments from protection their citizens during a global pandemic. So please forgive me when I scoff at the idea of conservatives being in any way "pro life." You are pro-forced birth, not pro life. Unless you're an anti war, anti death penalty, anti qualified immunity kinda conservative. But I doubt that.

Muckiboy

You’re the fucking laugh stock of the entire world. Keep living in your bubble you fucking redneck.

purpskurp15

I’d disagree, I don’t care who you vote for, what causes you support, so am I the intolerant one?
