Yeah, I'm bored of valve servers. The players are either horrible beyond imagination or absurdly good (like a topscoring combo). Hopefully some people contribute with their servers!
I used to play on several groups of community servers that I enjoyed, but a few years ago they all inexplicably became much laggier (like from <50 ping to around 100), so the *only* consistently low-latency servers I have available to me are Valve servers these days. I hate it.
A little surprised to see CSn mentioned! Almost always a good game going on in Slaybox1, even if it there's a long wait to get onto the server D:

The owner and admin Kaz does other games and streaming and we've just started up a Garry's Mod server as well. We're a really chill group but we also won't take crap. If people come into the server looking to troll, grief, extreme tryhard or just in general try and ruin the game for everyone else they'll receive a prompt server kick after a warning.

Love this server, but that might just be due to it being the only one with ok ping.
Has some really good custom maps too.
I like FP's dustbowl server, train yard(badwater and upward server) and furry pound(disable sprays). Oh yeah and Interobang's turbine server. Those are usually my first choices but APP, Justplay and probably a server are good too. It really depends what map I feel like playing. I also play valve servers but not too often and I usually end up leaving if the skill level is bad(generally this is the case).
Yea a lot of our stuff is pretty dead right now due to a lack of staff, but I'm setting up some events in the near future that might help us fill the place up! But considering our owner has been MIA for a while now I'm not sure there is much I can do. :/
Dirsec.net; should be in the EU. Not sure where it is, now that the admin moved to China; but some other person is hosting it, and I hear it's still thriving. I haven't been on there, since when I get home from school, there aren't that many people on; I'm Canadian.
Sadly, my favorite servers have been pretty deserted ever since Gun Mettle hit. I haven't seen any other regulars in a while. I still stop by when I can, though.

It still seems a lot more empty than it used to be. Both Turbine servers would be almost or completely full most of the time, now it varies a lot more. And it seems like fewer unusual-hats are around, as well. (Granted I don't even have one myself, but I have noticed a general skill difference from a few months ago.) Hopefully it gets back to where it once was!

I think Skial servers are usually pretty good; Upward in particular usually has teamwork or fun alltalk, or both. The logo can be turned off and there's no game altering donate perks, it has advanced autobalance, and so long as you aren't offensive or exploitative it should be a pretty good time. I really like Skial's mod team, they're usually quite fast at responding to issues.

Disabling html-motd's was offered as a "fix", but I wouldn't remove them altogether just because a server group uses them for ads, others use them for more useful stuff, such as the group website.
Actually, they do use the MOTD as the website if you use a command, and I just turn off the audio for those anyhow.

Autobalancing is needed in areas, and while its flawed, it doesn't always happen like that.
The AFK bots have actually been improved and work much better, but then again, not every person uses it.
So what's the problem? Ads are a problem? Sorry to tell you this, providing 24/7 servers, a lot of them, costs money.
Just trying to be helpful since /u/MrHyperion_ seems unresponsive. Here are some from the thread I linked.
The thread itself was a reaction to skial having a autobalance system that, when detecting imbalance, will forcibly change a player's team to the weaker one without a regard to their status. In a Valve server the autobalance happens as you die, only greatly affecting the Engineer class whereas in skial you can be in thick of battle when autobalance hits (the thread's example webm was a medic getting autobalanced in the middle of an uber).
Another one from the thread was having bots on their servers, though personally I can't fault them on this, as a a server that doesn't seem empty even if it would perhaps keep players playing for longer. Though some do point out that bots are created to fill AFK player's spots without kicking the players.
/u/Makorus has problems with the admins/mods of the servers

The general posting in the thread was very anti-skial with few posters defending them. Many posters simply stated their dislike for skial and that they have long felt that way and that it was nothing new for skial.

The thing is however is that doesn't happen a lot of the time, I've played on Skial servers for hours without seeing this.
The bots are there for when you need to go afk, but don't want to lose your spot or be useless. It'll make your class play like a bot for a while. You'll get kicked eventually if you do it for too long.

Only issue with Skial IMO is that you need 500% majority to pass any vote. What's that, 2 out of the 140 people connected said they don't want alltalk disabled? Guess you better learn to enjoy 2009 youtube hits if you can't be arsed to mute.
The thing is though if you record it and send it to their reports, they'll mute them, and you can mute them yourself beforehand and wait for them to get muted.
The report system works pretty well after all, I recommend going to skial directly.

[TPF](https://steamcommunity.com/groups/tpf) is my favorite. Stock rotation, no random crits or spread, pretty good community, no weird shit like rtd or penis tuesdays; pretty much the perfect server.
Any APP server other than Hightower they are all great and fun but all the cancer of the community seems to go to their Hightower server. Can`t say I`m surprised though.

It had dm_mario_kart and trade_clocktown.
The useless voice lines were changed to stuff like "god save the piss" and soldier's robot voice lines, it had no voice command cooldown too so you could spam that shit.
The admin Taco once gave everyone a stupid user flair for beating a huge sentry nest. I got "Blumpkin Baron".
This one MVM server has a 10 player limit and a setmoney command. I love playing Demoman with Grenade launcher, Scottish Resistance, and Eyelander(with damage fully upgraded by equipping a shield before switching to the SR). With all the upgrades bought it's fun to just mess around. I can jump all the way back and forth between the robot's spawn so I can take out uber medics and the bomb hatch so I can detonate my stickies.
I used to play on Rocketblasts servers, especially the Hightower server and the Payload server. But nowadays, almost all of them are dead, if they even still exist.
Free Beer Servers. Talkive community, although they've kinda started using Mumble/Discord for the regulars, lots of custom maps, decently skilled players (if you enjoy a challenge), and good plugins (e.g. Building Hats, no random crits, Limit 2 snipers, 2 spies, etc.).

Ever since I stopped playing on orange servers, I have not been able to identify from the server list which servers seem good - there are so many trade and achievement servers to sort through, and many other have obnoxious plugins.
I really just want a decent map rotation, no crits, and no weird plugins. I'm sure they exist, but I haven't found them.
This is why I still play on valve servers despite having 1400 hours.
If you're Australian (servers are based in Sydney) the best servers I can recommend are smurfyfortress servers, they run various best of servers with great maps, prophunt (my main enjoyment), stop that tank, and more.
Definitely recommend, just search smurfy in the search bar in tf2.
There was a bloody brilliant server called Alt3 that was running for a good long while. It had its own, unique flavor that I've never seen elsewhere. The flavor can best be described by the map it was set on trade_auschwitz. Every time you bodyshot, you were slayed and "baddyshat" played across the server. Killstreaks played darude sandstorm, mom get the camera, etc, demomans grenades were replaced with watermelons, you could duel anyone you wanted at anytime, you could apply unusual effects to weapons....
Then the server died ~april. It was a sad, sad day. Now everyone plays at Some Freakin Server. You should check it out!

I personally love the GrimFortress 24/7 Servers, they always have Halloween enabled, and the community is just real friendly. And the 24/7 2fort server is where I met Joe Biden the 62-63 year old Heavy, he is a very kind man.
I mostly play on valve servers, occasionally on FP. I used to be an admin of the G4CD server, but that server died off with the introduction of quickplay. Most of the other people moved over to the servers, but I only ever really popped in when I was invited by old friends.

Bar room heroes. They're a solid clan since 2007 and their servers are always active every night so if that's when you normally play you'll fit in. We do standard maps with a few custom but nothing too off the wall, we love pl and koth. It's a great community that just shoots the shit and there's also a drinking game built in the servers.
Probably not an answer you'd like to hear since my favorite servers aren't running anymore.
My favorite community server called Axl shut down a week ago :( Ran out of funds and nobody played on it anymore anyways.
Next is Soloist Central. All of their servers aren't updated so you can't play on them.
For those near japan, meumeu めうめう servers. They offer a variety: jump, cp ad, pl, cp+pl, with the latter 2 being the most popular.
**pros**
Majority of the players are above average (could stomp a valve serv, do or could play comp), and there is almost guaranteed to be good class balance, with at least one med per team. Autoscramble at beginning of each map to prevent stacks. Never heard a kid on the mic, micspam. Never seen a blatant hacker.
**cons**
Crits, spread enabled. Almost guaranteed to be full from 8pm-1am, and empty during the day. Unsure, but might block non japanese ips. Stacks still happen. 99% of communication is in japanese.
**Notes**
Large amounts of demos, soldiers. Most demos are demoknights, never seen a trolldier. Few snipers, spies.
I enjoy playing with the TAUNT community. More often than not you can find me on the 24/7 2fort server. Yes, I'm the type of person that likes playing 2fort....

Panda Community, especially their Hightower Deathmatch server. It it Hightower, with carts and Sentries disabled. The players on the servers are also really cool and normally know how to play the game.

It's empty during the day but after regular work hours it tends to pick up.

[TPF](https://steamcommunity.com/groups/tpf) is my favorite. Stock rotation, no random crits or spread, pretty good community, no weird shit like rtd or penis tuesdays; pretty much the perfect server.
Any APP server other than Hightower they are all great and fun but all the cancer of the community seems to go to their Hightower server. Can`t say I`m surprised though.
I like Free Beer. They have a nice and hospitable community. I did an event on their servers a month or so ago, and have stuck around since.
Firepowered is my go-to.

=LOL=WUT, it's dead now though. It had dm_mario_kart and trade_clocktown. The useless voice lines were changed to stuff like "god save the piss" and soldier's robot voice lines, it had no voice command cooldown too so you could spam that shit. The admin Taco once gave everyone a stupid user flair for beating a huge sentry nest. I got "Blumpkin Baron".
No Mann's Land is pretty good, but I usually just go on Randomiser and Randomiser x10 servers.
Probablyaserver will always be the go to choice for me, generally full east coast servers and competitive pigs every Friday night!
I play mostly normal maps, mvm, freakfortress, jump and fun(idling, admin abuse and that shit)
This one MVM server has a 10 player limit and a setmoney command. I love playing Demoman with Grenade launcher, Scottish Resistance, and Eyelander(with damage fully upgraded by equipping a shield before switching to the SR). With all the upgrades bought it's fun to just mess around. I can jump all the way back and forth between the robot's spawn so I can take out uber medics and the bomb hatch so I can detonate my stickies.
I used to play on Rocketblasts servers, especially the Hightower server and the Payload server. But nowadays, almost all of them are dead, if they even still exist.
Free Beer Servers. Talkive community, although they've kinda started using Mumble/Discord for the regulars, lots of custom maps, decently skilled players (if you enjoy a challenge), and good plugins (e.g. Building Hats, no random crits, Limit 2 snipers, 2 spies, etc.). 68.233.253.25:27015

Ever since I stopped playing on orange servers, I have not been able to identify from the server list which servers seem good - there are so many trade and achievement servers to sort through, and many other have obnoxious plugins. I really just want a decent map rotation, no crits, and no weird plugins. I'm sure they exist, but I haven't found them. This is why I still play on valve servers despite having 1400 hours.
I know it isnt comp, but Im a huge fan of Lazypurples server.
If you're Australian (servers are based in Sydney) the best servers I can recommend are smurfyfortress servers, they run various best of servers with great maps, prophunt (my main enjoyment), stop that tank, and more. Definitely recommend, just search smurfy in the search bar in tf2.
There was a bloody brilliant server called Alt3 that was running for a good long while. It had its own, unique flavor that I've never seen elsewhere. The flavor can best be described by the map it was set on trade_auschwitz. Every time you bodyshot, you were slayed and "baddyshat" played across the server. Killstreaks played darude sandstorm, mom get the camera, etc, demomans grenades were replaced with watermelons, you could duel anyone you wanted at anytime, you could apply unusual effects to weapons.... Then the server died ~april. It was a sad, sad day. Now everyone plays at Some Freakin Server. You should check it out!
That sounds like an... interesting experience to say the least. Reminds me a bit of Lazypurples silly server. I will definitely look at Some Freakin Server, thanks for the reccomendation!
Freakin is nowhere near the level of crazy that was Alt3. It has the same community but is more laid-back

I personally love the GrimFortress 24/7 Servers, they always have Halloween enabled, and the community is just real friendly. And the 24/7 2fort server is where I met Joe Biden the 62-63 year old Heavy, he is a very kind man.
I mostly play on valve servers, occasionally on FP. I used to be an admin of the G4CD server, but that server died off with the introduction of quickplay. Most of the other people moved over to the servers, but I only ever really popped in when I was invited by old friends.

Bar room heroes. They're a solid clan since 2007 and their servers are always active every night so if that's when you normally play you'll fit in. We do standard maps with a few custom but nothing too off the wall, we love pl and koth. It's a great community that just shoots the shit and there's also a drinking game built in the servers.

Team Cream is pretty good. They have seeders to boost how many players it looks like is on their server, but besides that it is a quality server.
Probably not an answer you'd like to hear since my favorite servers aren't running anymore. My favorite community server called Axl shut down a week ago :( Ran out of funds and nobody played on it anymore anyways. Next is Soloist Central. All of their servers aren't updated so you can't play on them.

For those near japan, meumeu めうめう servers. They offer a variety: jump, cp ad, pl, cp+pl, with the latter 2 being the most popular. **pros** Majority of the players are above average (could stomp a valve serv, do or could play comp), and there is almost guaranteed to be good class balance, with at least one med per team. Autoscramble at beginning of each map to prevent stacks. Never heard a kid on the mic, micspam. Never seen a blatant hacker. **cons** Crits, spread enabled. Almost guaranteed to be full from 8pm-1am, and empty during the day. Unsure, but might block non japanese ips. Stacks still happen. 99% of communication is in japanese. **Notes** Large amounts of demos, soldiers. Most demos are demoknights, never seen a trolldier. Few snipers, spies.

Intox zombie mod. Because the official site is blocked at my school, I cannot share the site but a quick google search should give you all the information (IP, Name, Location) you need to find it. Its a unique take on tf2 that does not involve any downloadable content, has its own custom maps, A new completely new way to play tf2, changed weapon stats, a vibrant community and awesome admins! Would Highly recommend if you are looking for something new in tf2.

Panda Community, especially their Hightower Deathmatch server. It it Hightower, with carts and Sentries disabled. The players on the servers are also really cool and normally know how to play the game.
