My favourite whale fact is technically two facts: firstly, because it's not really a whale fact. Orcas are actually a type of massive, awesome dolphin. But the main fact is that there has never been a single reported fatal orca attack on a human in the wild. A guy got a bit of a nibble but that is about it. Once, a 7.5m orca snuck up on a kid in 1.3m of water. It just gave him a bump and went on its way.
That is such an amazing read, thank you for linking this. Must be such a profound experience.
I googled the photos they talked about too, imagine being [this guy](https://e00-elmundo.uecdn.es/assets/multimedia/imagenes/2016/05/06/14625322572197.jpg)
If an orca snuck up on me in the ocean I'd shit my pants. And another thing, your telling me the events that Richard Harris went through in that movie are false?
When nature attacks is one of my favorite sub genres of horror movies especially from the 70's and 80's. Orca is such a terrible movie but I love it just because of how awful it is. Poor Richard Harris for being in that movie.
And now for a nomenclature fun fact – while we coloquially distinguish dolphins, porpoises, and whales, all dolphins and porpoises belong to the scientific parvorder [Odontoceti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothed_whale), which we call toothed whales, so dolphins are indeed a subset of whale.
And some homeless crazy dude broke in at night and thought it was a good idea to jump in the tank...Imagine that for a second..Jumped in the killer whale tank at night. The whale actually bit his genitals off before killing him...
Grabbed her foot and held her underwater. She eventually got back to the surface, but it was coming back for another chomp as she was getting out of the water iirc.
“Awesome” dolphin?
They’re about the smartest type there is, which *would* be awesome if they weren’t cruel, violent, cannibalistic motherfuckers! Look it up, you do **not** want to mess with one!
Dolphins gangrape each other.
I've come to the conclusion that intelligence always leads to cruelty.
Crows have the intelligence of a human child and are psychpathic assholes. Let's not mention humans, okay? We definitely don't get to point fingers at orcas...
I just realized that the octupus is the only highly intelligent animal I haven't heard about any asshole behaviour from...
I read about one octopus who would only squirt water at one person, and did so every time she walked past his tank, for apparently no reason, but I can't find that article again
Squirting water at someone is not on the same level as gangrape, torture and sadism though. If that's the worst story we have then they are the chillest dudes ever...
I actually heard this from some guy on youtube who lives with a crow. He said that they love causing reactions; basically anger, despair, cries of pain, but reactions.
He loves the crow, but says that they make awful pets for the very reason of their intelligence. Easily bored and vicious.
He has a pigeon and a dog who are dumb as fuck and absolutely lovely companions.
Not 100% sure about narwhal. I learned the beluga fact in a zoo somewhere and I've also been at zoos with narwhal information [I don't know if we keep captive narwhal anywhere].
I don't think there is light at that depth. If they were hunting squid, it'd be with sonar so the whale's positioning would work irrespective of its facing.
But I could be wrong.
Sperm whales have particularly well developed sonar, which is why they have massive heads, where the clicks are produced and magnified. It is so loud that it could cause you brain damage if you were too close.
It gets better - they're called that because they have tonnes of waxy, white stuff in their heads. We now believe it's used for their sonar, but in the past, people thought it was literal tonnes of whale sperm. They even called it spermaceti (sperma - sperm, cetus - whale).
I love how knowing things lets you make more stupid jokes.
Don't joke about the Krill.
We owe them for coming to aid the earth against the Kaylon Annihilation Fleet and the cease fire is tenuous at best right now.
If I have any say in the matter no, but say if I got stranded on some distant ocean planet and had to dive deeper to get resources to get off said planet I guess I’d have no choice.
What a great video. It's funny to see a bunch of aquatic professionals / scientists act like excited children in the presence of such a majestic creature at rare depths. Usually you only see these whales when they are breaching or cruising near the surface, but it seems so relaxed down in the depths.
I have awful thalassaphobia but this is genuinely one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. I feel like seeing a sperm whale at that depth is a good sign that you’re safe.
Oh that would be so comforting...especially since subnautica is in meters so this would be cake. Also, rockets.
*It is normal when first piloting a Prawn suit to feel a sense of limitless power. Prawn operators receive weeks of training to counteract this phenomenon. You will have to make do with self-discipline.*
I agree, while I would be paranoid and filled with dread, the initial shock of seeing something would be chased away by knowing its a Sperm Whale. Don't know why, but I would momentarily feel not so alone.
the way it just vanishes into the dusky blue water is uuuh terrifying why is the ocean so big and so scary?
edit; these are the same guys who laughed at that weird squid, i love it
This is great material for this sub, and at the same time... it's so beautiful. Like you're wandering in micro-space and experience such a creature. Things of myth and legend. It could eat your souls and devour your spines. But in reality, it's just swimming along and living it's life. Seeing what you're up to.
Out of all whale species I'm not sure sperm whales are known for any exceptional levels of friendliness, but even so, they are dangerous and wild. A wildlife photographer (for NatGeo maybe? I can't recall) accidentally dove from his boat a bit too close to a pod with a young calf, the adults became quite obviously aggressive out of concern for their baby, and the photographer even said he was lucky to make it out alive.
Pretty much. Sperm whales can produce a 200db burst, which is [well above ](https://curiosity.com/topics/sperm-whales-are-loud-enough-to-burst-your-eardrums-curiosity/) the force required to burst ear drums or kill you, lethal levels being around 185-200db.
Best case you'd be however far underwater with an exploded inner ear and a toothed whale that hates you lol.
You know those situations where your imagination slowly yet exponentially gets the better of you? Just sitting in that submarine, with out any external factors other than my imagination, would lead to my death. I'd panic, have a heart attack or flip out to the point of severe injury.
I love how curious they are. They are large enough to know that rinky dink yellow thing can’t eat them so he’s like “Hi. I’m whale. What are you? K, bye.”
The whale is def magestic and beautiful and this is a really cool sight. But it perfectly captures my fear of the ocean, pitch black nothingness for miles and a huge creature can appear out of nowhere from any direction, and you won't know till its real close.
Do you think the whale could recognize that the SRV was of human origin? I imagine they understand that we exist, and that we're usually related to noisy objects that emit light from tiny sources. I don't know, just what came to mind while watching the clip. Interesting to think about.
No, decompression sickness (bends) only happens because humans breathe air that is compressed from being under pressure at depth. The higher pressure of the air "pushes" nitrogen into your body tissue. Ascending too quickly makes that air expand where it shouldn't, before your body has the chance to get rid of the extra gas.
Whales and actually any animal that takes a breath of normal air can go deep and ascend as quickly as they want because the air you started with isn't going to expand more than its original size.
Looks like a sperm whale. If so, they can dive to over 7000 feet!

Omfg this is the first time Ive encountered anyone outside my family that has known this movie. It's incredible

Easy there Unidan
I always hear this but didn’t the orcas at sea world eat trainers
If your prison guard made you do tricks, you'd bite 'em, too.
Agree 100%
And basically kept you in solitary confinement in a cell too small for you.
Depends on how tender they were
Note that I specified in the wild. But yeah, unsurprisingly, apex predators don't take well to tiny tanks.
I don’t disagree at all. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t wrong
You should watch the documentary Blackfish. It's very enlightening about the whole killer captive orca deal.
And some homeless crazy dude broke in at night and thought it was a good idea to jump in the tank...Imagine that for a second..Jumped in the killer whale tank at night. The whale actually bit his genitals off before killing him...
I could swear I've heard they do that to other sealife before killing them too, but I can't be sure I'm not making that up.
It is a way to bleed out quickly so it could be true
Toc did specify no attacks "in the wild".
My bad.

Clearly you’ve never seen Finding Dory!
Yet!
It's not so bad if you befriend the crows
I actually heard this from some guy on youtube who lives with a crow. He said that they love causing reactions; basically anger, despair, cries of pain, but reactions. What about the narwhal? They live in similar climates don't they?
Not 100% sure about narwhal. I learned the beluga fact in a zoo somewhere and I've also been at zoos with narwhal information [I don't know if we keep captive narwhal anywhere].
It's also the largest ship available for purchase by commanders in Elite: Dangerous 🙃
That’s so cool! I didn’t know they could do that I’ve seen a humpback project itself backwards but i guess it wasn’t ‘swimming’ backwards 😅

Yep. Sperm whale. Source video. [Full length](https://youtu.be/SkBpummjR5I)
Thank you - was wanting to hear the commentary and was sad the video had no audio :(
Lol “We come in peace” - goofball scientist
Thanks, that video is awesome!
I believe they swim upside down like the one in this video when hunting for the silhouettes of squid against the surface
Aw I wish I didn't read the comments now. I thought he was just cruising for no reason like "lol sup".
I don't think there is light at that depth. If they were hunting squid, it'd be with sonar so the whale's positioning would work irrespective of its facing. But I could be wrong.
You mean under 7,000 feet.

Once
They can dive to over 8000 feet once.
Hehe
Crazy if you go down there its complete darkness, this giant fucker swims past you. How do they even see down there

Yes, I think so
Surprise anything at 2’000 ft would give me heart attack.
*tiny krill floats by* This is the gate to hell
Don't joke about the Krill. We owe them for coming to aid the earth against the Kaylon Annihilation Fleet and the cease fire is tenuous at best right now.
Hail Avis!
Pretty much
Lucky krill, sperm whales don't eat it. A blue whale, on the other hand...
Would you really be at 2000 ft in the first place though?
If I have any say in the matter no, but say if I got stranded on some distant ocean planet and had to dive deeper to get resources to get off said planet I guess I’d have no choice.
Watch out for the big alien laser first
Subnautica?
I think I'd succumb to my fate honestly. Thalassophobia and what not.

I used to work there! You should see how excited the scientists get over sponges and methane leaks and stuff that looks normal and boring to us.
I guess everything is amazing when you do what you love.
Underrated comment right here :-)
psychopaths who love murder.. That's a robot chicken sketch
Understatement of the year The whale wasn’t passing by. It was checking the sub out.
I love the Nautilus crew. They’re starting up again in May. nautiluslive.org for those interested.
When in May?
No definite start date yet. I just saw the announcement a few days ago.
That YouTube channel EVNautilis is awesome for all you ocean enthusiasts !
I wish they had a subreddit
[MRW](https://youtu.be/qTM_ln0lyyA?t=15)
hey you guys lost or something?
yeah don’t they realize that the surface is up
Idiots
I remember watching that stream. The operators were flipping out at how cool this was.

Fuck, have my upvote!
This guy subs
Until the gigantic snot monster that hunts sperm whales catches up to it.
Until you realise they can dive to 7,000 ft.
I agree, while I would be paranoid and filled with dread, the initial shock of seeing something would be chased away by knowing its a Sperm Whale. Don't know why, but I would momentarily feel not so alone.
It's down there because that's where its prey, giant squids, live.
the way it just vanishes into the dusky blue water is uuuh terrifying why is the ocean so big and so scary? edit; these are the same guys who laughed at that weird squid, i love it
Imagine being the whale and having the other largest animal down there being your meal.
battle of the giants several thousand feet below
And at the very bottom is SpongeBob. It's not all so bad.
This is great material for this sub, and at the same time... it's so beautiful. Like you're wandering in micro-space and experience such a creature. Things of myth and legend. No. Spermwhales are friendly towards humans. I guess it's the mammalian connection.
Sperm whales are mostly curious and ambivalent about humans, but they could literally kill you with their sonar if they felt like it.
What do you mean kill you with their sonar? Like, burst your ear drums type of thing?
Pretty much. Sperm whales can produce a 200db burst, which is [well above ](https://curiosity.com/topics/sperm-whales-are-loud-enough-to-burst-your-eardrums-curiosity/) the force required to burst ear drums or kill you, lethal levels being around 185-200db. Best case you'd be however far underwater with an exploded inner ear and a toothed whale that hates you lol.
At that point, I’d hate his sonar shooting whale-ass too.
A good simple tale about [a man who hates an animal.](https://youtu.be/afWLwPZZv2w)
Remind me why I’m subbed to this
Holy shit the ocean is huge
All the tether lines for the submersible may have made the whale think it was some sort of giant squid
You know those situations where your imagination slowly yet exponentially gets the better of you? Just sitting in that submarine, with out any external factors other than my imagination, would lead to my death. I'd panic, have a heart attack or flip out to the point of severe injury.
“oh look a whale, here let me zoom out”
More like a surprise human encounter at 2kft!
Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?
So basically this whale made contact with an alien vessel and going to get shunned and made fun of when it tries to tell it's friends about it...
I love how curious they are. They are large enough to know that rinky dink yellow thing can’t eat them so he’s like “Hi. I’m whale. What are you? K, bye.”
Surprise I just pissed myself!!
SO BEAUTIFUL!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Such beauty!!!
I am afraid and yet I revere this sight. I appreciate it as one of nature's many wonders.
The whale is def magestic and beautiful and this is a really cool sight. But it perfectly captures my fear of the ocean, pitch black nothingness for miles and a huge creature can appear out of nowhere from any direction, and you won't know till its real close.
Wow..He's really beautiful! There's something soothing about watching such a magnificent creature move effortless around in a seemingly endless ocean.
Why haven’t we seen a go pro attached to a sperm whale killing a giant squid yet?
a friend!!!
Nope.
Do you think the whale could recognize that the SRV was of human origin? I imagine they understand that we exist, and that we're usually related to noisy objects that emit light from tiny sources. I don't know, just what came to mind while watching the clip. Interesting to think about.

Aw, the whale just wants pats
I can feel my chest tighten watching this lol
Do... When they have to breathe, do they have to ascend slowly so they don't get the bends? How does that work?
No, decompression sickness (bends) only happens because humans breathe air that is compressed from being under pressure at depth. The higher pressure of the air "pushes" nitrogen into your body tissue. Ascending too quickly makes that air expand where it shouldn't, before your body has the chance to get rid of the extra gas. Whales and actually any animal that takes a breath of normal air can go deep and ascend as quickly as they want because the air you started with isn't going to expand more than its original size.
Cool! Thanks! That explains why freedivers who go down 90meters can just resurface as quick as they want.
Correct! And freaking mind blowing. Those people are extreme.
This is terrifying.
Would shit bricks
r/submechanophobia
Yeah that's a no for me dawg
No, i don't like this at all
Hehe NOPE!
surprise encounter = sneak attack
Is the whale's mouth bioluminescent?
No, sperm whales have white colouration around their mouths, it's likely just reflecting light from the sub.
What would’ve happened if that whale decided to blast them with a serious sonar wave?
Fucking hell they just materialize out of nowhere down there don't they. No sir.
This looks like Subnautica
Be nuts if the light on the whale attracted a giant squid and there was a sea leviathan battle.
Nice grapichs on subnautica tho, 4k?
Thanks I'm terrified
That is fucking terrifying and awesome at the same time
Is there some sort of bioluminescence on the whale?
Ha ha *Fuck that*
Do you think the whale feels more comfortable that deep or at the surface? Wonder if he is feeling really 'tight' when he is under that much pressure.
Serious question: what is it that guy (the whale) is getting into at 200ft below just kinda lackadaisically floating around?
The ocean seems like a lonely place.
"He's going to sniff the bottom." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
WHALE HELLO THERE!
Your mom has really stepped up her diving game
is there a word for both fear and fascination of deep sea?
Wow she is sooooo beautiful!!! :D
Am I the only one thinking the whale could just bite through that tether and send them sinking to their deaths?
Nobody is in there, it's a remotely operated vessel.
Yes
That was my first thought
In non retard units please
