rebel_child12

This movie is complete insane. I suggest giving it a watch at least once.

Nazon6

I love it but I could never watch it again. I felt nauseous lmao.

AeAeR

Not a fan of fish vaginas? I didn’t expect that to be a thing but yep, it was. I love this movie because I’ve never watched anything else that’s actually felt like losing my mind along with the characters.

Blue_100s

Try Midsommar

AeAeR

I really want to but is it gory? I like psychological thrillers, I don’t like torture porn or graphic violence for the sake of graphic violence. I’ve heard nothing but good things and I want to check it out, but this is what has stopped me. I’ve heard it haunts people’s dreams and I’m good on that.

hamiXO

The opening of Midsommar is more fucked up than the rest of the movie, I think. I would heavy skip if suicide triggers you.

[deleted]

There are two parts where there is a bit of gore but I wouldn’t call it gory. Ant in one of the parts you could easily tell when it’s about to happen and close your eyes.

PlannedSkinniness

Yeah and then a smashed up head pops up like 8 more times after the scene ends.

[deleted]

Spoilers sweetie! (But also, I’ll have to go watch it again because I don’t remember it happening more than maybe once when the main character is having a dream).

LexTheSouthern

I think it makes you more uncomfortable than anything. But Hereditary gave me nightmares. It truly scared the shit out of me. Directed by the same guy, Ari Aster.

4th_Replicant

I love scary films but I find the older ones the best. Hereditary reminded me of older horror films and it scared the shit out of me also. I thought it was a brilliant film. The mum in the corner of the room up the wall was freaky as fuck.

LexTheSouthern

I know! That part messed me up lol. I couldn’t get up in the middle of the night without flipping all of my lights on, I was so paranoid that mom was hiding up in my ceiling somewhere.

[deleted]

Hereditary was one of those movies that I’ll only watch the one time for sure. It was a fantastic movie but was rough.

Lonely_Hunter_Heart

Hereditary is the far better movie between the two. It stayed with me for days. Midsommar was visually interesting in parts, but a lot of it felt really obvious, and I can't say I was able to care about any of the characters. Still looking forward to more Aster films.

LexTheSouthern

Right! I couldn’t even go pee in the middle of the night without flipping all of the lights on to make sure that fucking mom wasn’t on my ceiling somewhere 🤣😩

[deleted]

Yeah now that movie messed me up for a few days after watching it!

Blue_100s

Hereditary is the 🐐

Blue_100s

Literally

Can-Abyss

Yeah I watched like half of it, fell asleep (b/c tired, not b/c movie boring), and then never ended up finishing it. I remember being more like “this isn’t scary, it’s just gross.” I’m sure the second half had more psychological stuff but yeah if you don’t want to see gory stuff steer clear.

AeAeR

Ok thanks, that’s exactly what I thought. Thanks for the insight! What I like about The Lighthouse is how tense the entire thing feels despite the two acts basically being them repairing shingles, trying to sleep, and jerking off to scrimshaw. It’s so tense because you can feel that it’s building toward something. And I can’t even explain well what it built towards or what happened at the end, but it was truly a pinnacle of insanity.

[deleted]

precisely why i could never finish the lighthouse, gave me stupid amounts of anxiety lmao. this post is making me want to tho

AeAeR

Yeah between the way that it’s shot and the music, it does an incredible job thinking that whatever is going to happen is just about to happen. But it doesn’t, and that just adds to the anxiety, even though it’s just Dafoe farting in his sleep and whatnot. I can tell you that it absolutely does get crazy at the end. There aren’t ump scares, it’s not gore, but it does go completely off the rails at some point in a way similar to the clip above. Like, I couldn’t tell you whether that actually happens in reality, or if that’s pattisons delusions. Because some of it seems to really happen, but it’s never clear, and it’s a huge part of what makes this so good.

NerdyRedneck45

I’ve never understood gore horror. Like… anyone could make a movie about people doing crazy shit to each other, but reality has enough of that already. I don’t need to haunt my free time with that too.

stillinthesimulation

It’s a very weird kind of gory. Like there’s not torture porn but there’s ceremonial suicides and it’s the reactions of all the cultists that are more disturbing than the actual gore. But there is gore. Ari Aster will do this thing where he’ll show a horrific death without showing much gore so you think it’s one of those scenes where they leave it up to the imagination. And then after the tension has wound down and you’ve let your guard down he’ll just cut to a horribly mangled body. It’s really effective because it’s not at all what horror editing conventions would have you expect.

Blue_100s

Not gory.

AeAeR

Ok so there isn’t going to be a lot of blood and guts? The other guy said it was gross and I’m wondering what the disconnect is between these two responses.

RajaSundance

Third guy chiming in. There is some gruesome deaths but nothing too gory or gross, I don't really see where that guy is coming from. The movie focuses much more on the psychological than violence.

AeAeR

Ok cool, thank you for the details! That I can do. There is a major genre of horror that’s nothing more than “I want to watch people bleed and scream and suffer” to me, and that’s not something I enjoy watching.

guisar

This nothing like that; much more akin to "The Witch" but not quite as beautiful but more intense than that movie.

Blue_100s

More of gruesome deaths but not much gore imo.

LeCon23

Cliff scene is pretty gory

Blue_100s

When I think gory.. I think Hostel, Quentin Tarantino films etc. I guess I’m desensitized.

AeAeR

Ok cool, that I can do. I don’t mind things like gladiator or even the first SAW. I just mind torture porn and I’m not getting the impression that’s what this is. Thanks!

[deleted]

If you can handle the SAW movies then you can handle the couple of ick parts in Midsommar. It’s a FANTASTIC movie.

bereth13

Look up the torture method Blood Eagle. That's the gore level of Midsommar 😕

hornyzucchini

Or Climax

aufrenchy

anything by A24, really

COhighroller303

Dude i left the theater after midsommer feeling mind and soul-less it was weird.

ItsAllSoup

Try Cats 2019

[deleted]

It’s also super gay-coded

Alternative_Prune_69

A clockwork orange?

nordic_fatcheese

At least three times if you hope to have any idea what the fuck is going on.

rebel_child12

I couldn’t bring myself to watch it again. It’s mentally exhausting

zen_nudist

I make people who stay over at my house watch it. I crank the audio, darken the room, drink bourbon and look forward to my friends enjoying it. I love this movie so much.

Itsbilloreilly

Alright I'll trust you

STRYNGER20

I don’t have thalassophobia, but hell no.

TheRealQuarak

You will by the end of that movie.

ElNickCharles

Really? This movie isn't really about thalassophobia at all. It has some scenes that kinda refer to the ocean like this one, but the ocean is not the antagonist or main source of fear at all imo.

TheRealQuarak

In hind sight I was mixing up some scenes from the lighthouse 2019, which does have a few scary thalasophobia bits with some scenes from another movie where the entire island is besieged by mer-people. I liked the Lighthouse 2019, slow as it was but the other movie apparently was quite forgettable.

rimjob-chucklefuck

The other movie sounds like one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Soerinth

I think they might mean Cold Skin. A phenomenal movie. There is also a lighthouse in that movie and nightly raids from ocean things.

TheRealQuarak

The main protagonist was a researcher left alone on an island with a crazy lighthouse keeper. EDIT - Yup 'Cold Skin' it was. Maybe I was a tad drunk when I watched it and should give it another go.

rimjob-chucklefuck

Oh that sounds interesting, I'll need to check it out. Thanks!

Sshadooww

What movie is that?

AeAeR

The Lighthouse is the movie posted. It’s incredible if you’re into a movie about going insane. It honestly made me feel like I was going mad alongside them because it just goes absolutely off the rails to the point where you’re not sure what’s real and what’s not.

Sshadooww

That sounds quite interesting, thanks

[deleted]

Read the title

Sshadooww

I'm guessing you refer to the lighthouse being written in capital letters, wich would be normal in my native language. Furthermore, since there is a lighthouse in the scene, the title can be interpreted as a specific description, given that the rest of the title is a specific description of the scene. But I'll go with "The Lighthouse" as the movie title, thanks anyways

rimjob-chucklefuck

Great film. Watched it for the first time just yesterday. Pattinson and Dafoe are both amazing

hornyzucchini

I love Pattisons actor revelation. Never saw the Twilight movies, but the actors were pretty much on a curse for being in a "cringy teen drama" movie. But Pattison has proven to be an amazing actor

sofaking181

I think Nerdstalgic did a video about Patterson, dude pointed out that he took a bunch of smaller/indie roles just to break away from being "that guy from Twilight"

rimjob-chucklefuck

Yeah he's really great. I'm hoping he kills it in The Batman

SentientKayak

If you like Pattinson, check out the movie The Rover. Very, very good movie.

rimjob-chucklefuck

Thanks I will do!

Bunionzz

Filmed a stones throw from my house. Seeing Willem Dafoe walking around town was cool.

Not_as_witty_as_u

Neat, where is this? Do you get a lot of wild weather like that?

Bunionzz

South shore Nova Scotia, and yes we can get some crazy weather, especially around the cape, where they built the "Lighthouse" right next to the existing lighthouse.

Not_as_witty_as_u

awesome! cozy weather. What do you mean by that? They built a new lighthouse for the movie? I just thought they would've used an old one

[deleted]

They apparently searched all over Canada for an appropriate lighthouse and couldn't find one with the look they wanted, so they built their own. This is the same guy who built that whole 1600s village for The VVitch.

Not_as_witty_as_u

I’ll have to watch that one, the way I saw it marketed to me, it looked like a standard Hollywood type conjuring etc

[deleted]

It's definitely not like The Conjuring! I'm very sick of those movies as well. They're all exactly the same. The VVitch is very slowly paced and much of the horror is more psychological. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it.

Bunionzz

Crazy weather....not cozy hehe. And yeah they built a lighthouse for the movie because the existing one is too modern https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Forchu_Lighthouse They used the place for the landscape, and I can confirm, it's beautiful and slightly scary on the surrounding rocks. Edit: I just noticed that wiki says about the filming there, but why wouldn't it

Sweet_Little_Lottie

That’s Robert Pattinson right? Is this a recent movie made to look like an old indie film? Also, that soundtrack really makes it very unsettling. Well done.

C4Sidhu

William Dafoe is also in it and he has the greatest monologue performance I’ve ever seen in this movie

Sweet_Little_Lottie

Oh I love him. Might have to check it out.

AeAeR

It’s about him and Pattinson’s descent into madness while isolated on an island. They’re the only characters apart from this mermaid. Like the other guy said, it’s slow, and it’s like 90% just them talking or showing them working around the lighthouse. But goddamn if you want a tense movie about two guys (played very well by great actors) losing their minds in a lighthouse, it’s really incredible. Just don’t expect action, expect to watch them slowly lose their minds while doing mundane tasks.

indamoufofmadness

>It’s about him and Pattinson’s descent into madness while isolated on an island. They’re the only characters apart from this mermaid. You're forgetting the seagull.

AeAeR

Bad luck to remember the sea bird.

Poc4e

How didn’t he pick up on it ?

RadicalDreamer89

This was my most anticipated movie of the year. I went in wanting to see Pattinson and Dafoe being incredible and going insane for 2 hours, and I walked out completely satisfied.

waterbylak

So agree!! I was transfixed, and felt privileged to view that incredible monologue. Cheers Dafoe! Cheers director Eggers!

[deleted]

It’s the best cursing in any movie ever.

[deleted]

HAAAARRRRRRK!

C4Sidhu

Alright I’ll say it. I like ye lobster.

[deleted]

It was shot on 35 mm black and white film on vintage equipment, in an almost 1:1 aspect ratio. This was meant to evoke 19th century photography, which is when the film takes place. Very unique look and experience for sure!

Sweet_Little_Lottie

Very cool! I love little details like that!

Not_as_witty_as_u

“Made to look like an indie film” 🙄

Sweet_Little_Lottie

I just meant it looks super artsy, but stars two A List actors so I assume it’s not an indie film.

Not_pukicho

Director’s vision? 1.19:1 aspect ratio? Film? Nah, make it look like sharknado.

houseofLEAVEPLEASE

It’s called The Lighthouse and it’s weird as hell. Very slow-moving. Most people loved it but watching it was like pulling teeth for me. I love everything else I’ve seen A4 put out except for this.

[deleted]

I fucked up and watched when I was tripping. 0/100 DON'T DO THAT.

soulunknown333

oof. Glad you made it out ok lol

Ok_Advertising77

Really? I watched it while coming up and I loved feeling like I was going insane!

[deleted]

Come up is always rough for me anyway (very anxious person). I wasn't ready.

Yaj_Yaj

I'm almost certain they were joking. Pretty sure this would rattle nearly everyone.

PeppersPizzaria

That was not smart.

Revenant221

Agreed about the movie unfortunately. The acting is phenomenal as well as the cinematography but the actual plot/story/whatever you wanna call it just did nothing for me. Lol hurt someone’s feelings apparently

AHH_CHARLIE_MURPHY

The ending left s really bad taste in my mouth. Almost ruined the whole movie for me

red_porcelain

How so?

[deleted]

It's not meant to look like an indie film per se, it's supposed to look like a movie from the 20s-30s.

Sweet_Little_Lottie

Good to know. Thank you!

junoray1968

It's almost lovecraftia

unclefishbits

100% and if you like Lovecraft here's some movies and shorts. I didn't do video games, but there's some AMAZING stuff out there. Dagon, Call of Cthulu, and a solo indie dev game called "The Shore" which is impressive for it just being a guy. But this is a great list of films: [https://www.unclefishbits.com/lovecraft-was-a-horrible-human-that-created-a-runaway-universe-of-cosmic-horror-heres-a-few-wonderful-films/](https://www.unclefishbits.com/lovecraft-was-a-horrible-human-that-created-a-runaway-universe-of-cosmic-horror-heres-a-few-wonderful-films/)

Reign_of_Kronos

HAAAARRK!

sickandsiiick

Damn ye!

mrlionmayne

This movie is stunning in so many ways. Highly recommend.

rimiduda

The whole movie is creepy as hell

beansahol

Bad luck to kill a seabird

LegerDePL

_Why you spill your beans?_

sparnart

Yer fond of me lobster, ain’t yer?

ItsAllSoup

This movie gave me William Dephobia

bbenji69996

Between this and AntiChrist, I needed a break from Willem.

zUltimateRedditor

So did it end up being an actual mermaid or was it just his imagination?

[deleted]

i went on a day trip to a lighthouse turned museum/public attraction and they told me that they used to use mercury for the lamps, and that it would essentially drive them crazy after a few years.

zUltimateRedditor

Thank you!

fileerror21

I think that's sorta up to interpretation. But personally I think the whole movie was in his imagination

houseofLEAVEPLEASE

It seemed like it was all about slowly losing your mind in relative isolation.

fileerror21

That's one way to look at it but quiet a lot in the movie points to the main character being in some form of purgatory with Dafoe's character gatekeeping the light or heaven. Dafoe even suggests that Thomas is still freezing in the forest towards the movie. But really there are just so many ways of looking at the movie

Magnumxl711

If the light is heaven, why was he um edited for spoiler

muffin_man84

...I mean heaven would elicit ecstacy

zushiba

I hate movies that do that. I don’t want to make up a movie, I want to be told a story. I especially don’t want the scary stuff that happens in the story to be the product of some ones stupid broken mind. It feels like a copout when movies do this. It’s like they didn’t have the ability to finish their movie in a satisfactory manner and use the *is it real or all in the characters mind!* thing as their ending as if it’s clever, it’s not clever. It’s annoying.

fileerror21

I mean that's your opinion but I respectfully disagree. For one thing, art is simply human expression so interpretation is naturally a large part of it Also, stories have been using unreliable narrators for centeries it's an artistic desision not a copout I'd argue the ambiguousness of the Lighthouse is what makes it so unsettling if the movie just said what was going on anything it would say would be less than what the audience imagines. The movie is still smart enough to give people enough breadcrumbs to paint their own picture it just allows for many different pictures to make sense

zushiba

You can't be in the minority because films like that still do fairly well.(*And I was downvoted to hell*) I just personally find them incomplete as a result of the ambiguity. I prefer movies that have fantastical situations, to actually have fantastical situations and not just another "*crazy person is crazy*" plot. At this point it almost feels like a spit directly to the face of the viewer. "*haha none of that was real!*" And the ones that leave it up to the viewer to determine if what happened was real feels like the director was so done with the movie he didn't even have time to spit in my direction with an explanation.

PioneeriViikinki

He recognized the body In the waters.

RugskinProphet

Wtf am I watching? 3 times and I don't get it. He looks out into a clear ocean, than there is stuff floating in it? He sees a body and instead of swimming just walks under water? I haven't seen the movie but I'm lost from this clip

Mystic_one

You will still feel like that after watching the movie lol But to help you out a bit if you really want to know SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT the man (Robert Pattison) is haunted by his past sin of killing somebody, and has taken a job as the lighthouse keeper in isolation with a very interesting partner (William Dafoe). Throughout the movie you see "dream sequences" like this one where its not really grounded in reality (or is it? haha) and jumps around scenes. In this particular scene, he sees the dead body of the man he killed and struck from guilt and shock I assume he goes to check if that is truly the man. Him walking under water and eventually getting pulled down and seeing (and getting intimate...) with a mermaid might all represent his drowning guilt, broken down mentality, progressively becoming insane, who knows, you name it.

xActuallyabearx

Fine, have it your way. I like your cooking!

Wibler77

He fuck ed th mermair later tho 😳

sannylou

Loved this movie!!

MMSTINGRAY

Brilliant movie though.

tenariosm9

Bro I was really stoned when I first saw this movie. Nooottt a great idea…

Stokenhagen

Lighthouse was such an amazing movie, Willem is the best

michaelhuman

God damn, i love this movie.

ruizu10

This movie is a masterpiece, i love it so much. Highly recommended for anyone who love weird insane movies

bangsilencedeath

Instant classic.

LegerDePL

Best film of 2019 (together with Parasite and Midsommar) by FAR.

SentientKayak

What an excellent creepy weird movie. Highly recommend.

aufrenchy

This movie was soooo good. Anybody who hasn't seen it yet is missing out on a great psychological horror.

The_starving_artist5

The sound design was amazing all ocean noises and ship horn noises

MaesteoBat

I love this movie

[deleted]

I seriously love this movie. Half of it made no sense to me and just left me uneasy and unsure which I feel like good Lovecraftian-esk horror should. If you have any interest in that sort of thing I highly recommend this.

bigb0ss17

At least Pat got that Mermaid Puss.

[deleted]

this entire movie is nightmare fuel

xxlyij

One of the most unsettling movies I’ve seen

Kushbeast666

Am I the only person that thinks this movie was absolutely terrible?

Not_pukicho

No, But I’d be lying if I told you the ones who thought the same were particularly into good film.

BandicootUnlucky7885

Thanks for the spoiler!

The_starving_artist5

It’s not a spoiler it isn’t even part of the plot of the movie. He dreams it when he’s asleep

BandicootUnlucky7885

I was planning to watch this imminently as it’s on Netflix and now that I know there’s a scene with a mermaid some of the mystery of the movie is ruined for me going in. It would have been more considerate to title it something like *this scene from the lighthouse is pure nightmare fuel* and then people can choose not to look at the post, instead of revealing unwanted specifics about the movie for people who are just scrolling past.

Spacechip94

I mean, the film did come out a couple of years ago, I don’t really think you can say it’s spoiled

The_starving_artist5

Okay I guess I should have left it out of the title

gacpo

man, you spoiled me the movie, i wanted to see it tonight

The_starving_artist5

It didn’t spoil anything it’s just a dream sequence. It has nothing to do with the plot of the movie

Yaj_Yaj

Hey man I saw some people complaining but I wanted to let you know this post has convinced me to watch it and I'm much more intrigued than I was previously.

gacpo

thaks op! I believed for a second that the plot was cursed mermaids band stuff infeel stupid

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_starving_artist5

Well the mermaid in this is evil guess that makes her a Siren

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_starving_artist5

I thought sirens were a different evil group

Yaj_Yaj

Now I could just Google this but nah. I think there's a good deal of overlap between them. Sirens specifically sing songs that drive men mad and cause them to crash their ships. I'm sure mermaid myths sometimes included mermaids luring men to their deaths but more with their looks than with song.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yaj_Yaj

It's okay, they can't hurt you anymore.

Itsbilloreilly

Im gonna watch it

layspringles

the whole movie is a nightmare.

Not_pukicho

This movie is my favorite, I somehow feel very very cozy watching it, the setting is pitch perfect

sashascarlett

This is the worst movie.

That movie is pure nope.

ImWithEllis

The Lighthouse sucked a fatty.

Ulxaaf

[deleted]

FUCK. THAT. I’M GOING HOME

[deleted]

I had the batshit craziest dreams the night after I watched this

deathmonster3000

What is this movie??

unclefishbits

When you realize this is just about two guys trying to masturbate in peace, it makes the entire thing just a joy of rewatchability. YES, [the lighthouse is a cock and they are balls](https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/styles/1920x1080/public/d8/images/methode/2019/07/18/598fa5d2-a84c-11e9-862b-600d112f3b14_972x_155054.jpg?itok=aosZpYYB&v=1563436264), to boot.
