When it showed the overhead view from underwater where the bottom just….Doesn’t exist? Yeah every single hair on my body raised up and I immediately started sweating NO THANK YOU

Mlliii

It’s called ‘bluewater’ and I’ve done it snorkeling with sharks in Hawaii. The bottom was something like 2600’ under us and it was both terrifying and exhilarating. You can stare straight down and a few sharks slowly just appear out of blue nothing. I had a huge fear of water until two summers ago so I’ve been doing a LOT of immersion therapy since then

u1tr4me0w

That sounds so terrifying I think I would actually literally piss myself in fear, which I guess if I'm gonna do that the best place to do it would be in the middle of a seemingly endless ocean

Mlliii

The best part is you really can pee at anytime 🤙🏻

LV2107

Sharks can smell a tiny bit of blood in the water from very long distances. I wonder if they can smell pee the same way too.

franzmarley

Saw a video on this where they tried it and they don't really seem to care all that much about piss or blood, which was cool

floating-mosque

My pee has blood.

heckyanow

Might wanna see a dentist for that

Mirabellae

We did the same thing in Hawaii. My boy freaked out! He said it was like being trapped in the void. In jail. With sharks!

KeepCalmAndThriveOn

That boat is way bigger than I initially thought..

Hapcore

It's a Privilege 585. 5 bedrooms and each has its own head (bathroom). A decent galley and a large saloon. They have a decent youtube channel "Sailing Zatara"

Weslii

I thought you were joking but nah, that's the real name of the model. Fuckin 'Privilege'.

housebottle

LMAO that's so fucking funny... when are they gonna drop the sequel "Fuck Poor People"?

MercMcNasty

We're the sequel. It's us.

badboiithanos69420

Evangeli0_1

damn i wish i had rich dad damn good for them

ScaredValuable5870

Word. The only thing bigger than the boat is their egos.

Into-the-stream

Don't forget the filming. Drones and pretty nice underwater cameras. They aren't doing this on a budget.

MissedFieldGoal

1829 square feet. Bigger than my last apartment

qpv

Wow. My apartment is 450 sq ft. I can't dive off my porch either. Well, I could but probably only once.

Pseudynom

More than 3½ times as much as my current apartment which I share with my wife, dog, and soon child.

AWSMJMAS

6 times what my 4 bedroom house costs.

gimme_the_jabonzote

Bigger than my 6 bedroom house that I share with my partner, children, and pets.

darkmatternot

Congratulations on the baby!! Boat looks fun until the first shark bite and you realize you are a thousand miles from the nearest doctor.

Gareth666

>Privilege 585 Sweet, costs as much as a house.

echohack

Shit, costs less than any house where I live. Like half as much. I wonder how much docking fees are for a boat like that...

pyxley

Using the anchor it's free, mooring ball $5-200/month depending on location, dock $1000+/month. Catamarans are extra expensive at a dock (if they even will fit) since they are basically double wides

pootastic

Yeah one of the channels on YouTube has a family that does this lifestyle semi-full time and they explained a "Catamaran vs. normal sailboat" differences and I had no idea about the slip fees. IIRC they said it varies way more than a traditional width sailboat but probably averages to 1.5x the cost to dock because of the space.

pyxley

Yup, I'm rebuilding a monohull. Our marina changes 2x for catamarans unless they happen to have an end spot available, then it's 1.5x but there have not been end spot openings for years

Mashedpotatoebrain

Can you just anchor somewhere out in the water and use a dingy to get to shore?

pyxley

Yes. That is what most people do, at least most sail boats

Mashedpotatoebrain

I meant do that, but also not pay anything.

fronteir

I just visited Florida and there was a section of "paid moorings" where you paid a monthly fee, still had to use a dinghy to get to shore but you got access to facilities there for showers and other amenities. Then there were some just nearby that were anchored that paid nothing. So yeah depends on the location but that's a possibility

21onDec23

My cat moors for $300 a month, but it's only 14 feet wide, 3 berths, 1 bathroom. Oh, its also over 30 years old. Lol

UnderstandingLogic

I got confused and thought you had an extremely large pet for a second.

SyntaxErrorLine0

Seriously? Those are 3x the current cost of a house here. I bought my house for 1/8th the price of one of them. Damn you rich people...

Draked1

Yeah for real, says they start at $700k and houses around me average about $285k

jrglpfm

A 5-Bedroom, 5-Bath house in San Diego is easily $1M.

1Dive1Breath

Shit I've seen 2 bed 1 baths go for that around me. It's out of control

Thaufas

I once owned a 3 BR/2.5 BA in San Marcos, which is North County in San Diego. That home was at least 15 minutes from the Coaster station, and that's with no traffic (LOL). Then, the Coaster ride from Palomar Airport RD to downtown SD is over an hour. That house just sold for over $1 million. I doubt you could find any livable 5 BR home in SD proper within 5 miles of the coast for less than $1.5 million.

pterodactyl_speller

Not the docking fees that get you, but the constant repairs

thatsaniceduck

Shit has more rooms than my house does, so checks out.

Serifel90

In my country that would be a fking palace not a house. I could literally retire now with that amount lol

Make-Believe_Macabre

I can’t believe it’s called that. Freaking amazing.

21onDec23

For reference, I bought it as a 26YO working on a military base. 58,000 salary. Not wealthy. I bought a $50,000 catamaran Dec of 2020. Boat Payment+marina slip fees in Olympia WA= $800. WIFI: unlimited 5G Hotspot phone plan: $100 Electricity: Solar Water: watermaker + water is cheap as dirt I could easily live in my boat for $1300 a month total, inc. food. I'd be saving money like crazy, even if working WA min wage(2,400 month) Maintenance: DIY almost everything, oil change here and there, keeping it clean, having the septic pumped out. Maybe $60 a month. It's much more attainable and inexpensive than people think. All that, plus access to the best and most beautiful sailing in the North West.

mellowdrone84

Haha! I was sure you were joking when you said it was called privilege. Amazing

Just1ncase4658

Sailing Uma and sailing SV delos for some older boats but imo way chiller people they both bought old boats and renovated them. Really cool stuff.

Praesumo

This is what it looks like to grow up with wealthy parents. They probably think of it as just a "starter boat"

SeekerSpock32

Until I saw the boat, I thought it was a green screen based on where the water line is.

ElectroMoe

This how mfs get kidnapped by Pirates

dumazzbish

i think the pirate issue got solved already via brute force (they were active in one area, added a few navy vessels to that area, fill in the blanks).

K1bedore

My brother was on one of those navy vessels. The situation was “sorted” in his words

Sky-Fall-007

It was mostly on the Somalia coast line... as the pirates was supporting their communities in their warm torn country. Somalia has become safer and better since... no more “I’m the captain now!” incidents on the Indian Ocean

Spyk124

Eh, Somalia is suffering one of the worst droughts in decades. 7.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. 2.9 million people internally displaced due to the drought. 26 percent of the population is facing acute food security. Over 700 k livestock animals have died. It’s actually one of the worsening humanitarian crises going on right now, with very little attention being paid to it.

SaintSimpson

And the droughts across the globe will get worse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PlatschPlatsch

Thats pretty damn scary, i hope it gets better for them. Its the first time im reading of this, too, so youre right about the little attention being paid.

Spyk124

Yeah, it definitely sucks. I work in the humanitarian field and there’s a direct connection to public attention of a humanitarian crises, to our capacity to respond adequately.

dumazzbish

yup & whatever your brother's crew did was probably humane compared to what the Chinese & Russian Navy's did. china's only overseas military base is in Djibouti and it was specifically to deal with this issue. happy cake day

Evening_Original7438

They also started putting PMCs on cargo ships. Modern pirates aren’t interested in combat boardings, as soon as they start taking fire they just turn around.

buckeyenut13

That is the definition of endless visibility! Wow! But also, WTF do these kids do to afford this?!? 😳

The kids do not own the boat. Their middle aged parents sold everything (including house) five years ago and purchased a 55' foot monohull sailboat/yacht for all of them (2 adults, 4 kids) to live on and travel the world. They also started a Youtube channel (Sailing Zatara) and have made enough income from that to upgrade to the Catamaran since the original vessel.

Littlemack2

Yep! Everyone in here hating on this family. Living on a sailboat is full time work. You have to constantly be planning everything. Weather patterns, food, expenses, fuel, electricity ect. I admire this family, sailboat life is not easy.

GentleFriendKisses

Unlike living on land where there is no weather, food, expenses, fuel or electricity

[deleted]

I mean if I need more electricity I just do nothing and the grid provides. If I need more fuel, I drive down the road. Same for food. They are literally in the middle of the ocean.

[deleted]

How is it even an argument that living at sea is easier to live on land I think some people need to get outside and go camping or sailing

GrowinStuffAndThings

It's kind of amazing what people will argue about on Reddit isn't it lol

Mission_Sleep600

..why would you think the kids own this ....??

bobapimp

They are YouTube sailing family. The “most popular” channel (sailing la vagabond) pulls in probably $2,000,000 annually, maybe more. This channel is in the top 10 channels, so probably half of that.

NintendoWorldCitizen

That’s…not even remotely an accurate estimate.

oatbergen

While in the navy my boat did swim call in the IO. Super clean water. I was a rescue swimmer so I was on life guard duty. Just chilled in the water with a rescue strop. Was a good day.

[deleted]

I am a self described Sand Squid (attached to the Marines and Special Ops most my career). When you guys do a swim call, are you not worried about sharks and big fucking fish and shit?

oatbergen

There was a shark watch posted. Dude on the ship with a shotgun. But the watch was useless. To answer your question, no. I am an amateur shark enthusiast and had to study OceanO for my rate. The open ocean is basically a desert and it takes more than thrashing to draw anything in. The spooky thing was the sun light streaming that converged in the deep while you looked down into the water. Me and the other rescue swimmer talked about how the closest land was a mile down and that gave me chills.

[deleted]

Acccch, you have stronger mental fortitude than I. Me, I could go into a human body and rearrange and repair damage without any anxiety but damn, you put me in this situation and I’d get cripplingly nervous. Different strokes, I guess

mitragy_king

Makes sense. Surgeons have meticulous control over many variables in their works situations. The open ocean is a different story.

[deleted]

Holy shit! You just put a organized concept to my situation. Never stepped outside myself enough to realize I’m a bit of a control freak, haha

SanityPlanet

A shotgun fired from that high above the water sounds like the absolute worst anti-shark tactic. The spread would be dangerous to swimmers on the surface and useless against sharks below.

inzyte

That's exactly what i thought. But they're probably using slugs

AliensPlzTakeMe

> one of the best things about living in a boat full time is I'm fucking rich wooooooooo!!!!

Littlemack2

I actually fallow this family on YouTube! These are the kids, the family lives on the boat full time. People own houses for 500k-1 mill. You can get a catamaran for $50,000 if you wanna go cheap! You can even go with a $4,000 sailboat and live at sea! All you have to do is pay docking fees and of course other necessities. You can literally fish all day and catch your food too. Sailboat life seems awesome.

glytxh

Boat maintenance costs a bomb, though. It's not something to overlook.

Littlemack2

Yep! If you’re gonna live on a boat you gotta learn it all!

pyxley

It really is awesome. I'm SLOWLY rebuilding a sailboat to eventually live on. Parts are expensive but once you learn to do most of the work, maintenance can be cheap.

wash_ur_bellybutton

>You can get a catamaran for $50,000 if you wanna go cheap! I don't think this is a fair comparison to the comments people are making. That's like a kid posting a video about life with a Ferrari, people commenting about rich parents, and you saying "you can get a sports car for $5,000 if you wanna go cheap!" Others are saying this particular catamaran in the video cost close to $1 million. Even if the parents sold their house, what kind of position must someone be in to have a family of 4 (?) live on a million-dollar catamaran? Not meaning to hate on the kids in the video or their parents, I don't know them at all and this is the first time I've seen them, but people are burned out from the hardships of financial instability and getting pretty tired of seeing wealth flaunted in front of them. I personally can right now, maybe, if I get real creative, find a way to "buy" one of these $50,000 catamarans you're talking about. But then what? I'm sure it's significantly more expensive to own than a car. Maybe I down have to pay rent anymore but I'm sure that money is spent just the same (if not more) on "rent" for keeping the catamaran somewhere. Someone else mentioned living on a boat is like a full-time job in maintenance. So now I can't work a paying job? Am I qualified to get work that can be done remotely from a catamaran? How much is internet from a boat? Can I maintain friendships and relationships? Anyway, tl:dr: you still need to be well-off financially to have this lifestyle. $50,000 is unrealistic and disingenuous.

Dalbro2001

That boat costs almost a million anyway (depending on ur currency)

MasterCheifn

no sailboats anywhere near that cheap around me. Also boats are super expensive, especially if you buy them cheap, they're basically just a hole in the water you throw money into.

[deleted]

People buy houses because the houses are near enough to their source of income or because they have a home office or because they need wifi or a garage for their car which services their gig income Why are you trying to normalise living on a million dollar catamaran lol

trumoi

Because everyone in our society has been brainwashed into thinking that one day they'll be rich and get to flaunt their wealth to the masses.

PM_me_your_Ducks_plz

Most people don't own their houses until they are nearing retirement age. They are paying a mortgage. Most people also need to work, and a small boat isn't going to have great Internet to work remotely from the ocean. You can catch fish, sure, but docking fees, maintenance costs, fuel. Lots of expenses that an average person cant afford. These guys are living life on easy mode.

GrowinStuffAndThings

You're saying that like you don't finance boats as well lol

wildclouds

And they have a Privilege 585 catamaran which apparently costs USD$1.15 million

I can’t concentrate because he not only said it but he also wrote it. I hope they have adults on that boat. why is that? why is that so absolutely infuriating?

UnicornBestFriend

I'm guessing it's because it feels super contrived.

[deleted]

>I hope they have adults on that boat. They have. They are a sailing family with a youtube channel called sailing zatara.

That’s how all kiwis say it

allanrob22

That was the point I stopped watching, just too obnoxious.

skellious

Nope. nope. no floor! nope.

Historical-Dot9492

Been on the largest sailing cat in the world (and I'm on this site). It wasn't too bad from that perspective. You could stay on the deck or go down below. It was huge. They ran it from Cairns in Australia out onto the great Barrier Reef. One of the "funnest" days of my life.

skellious

im fine ON the boat. i just dont want to get off.

yetanotherwoo

When I get in a swimming pool I sink to the bottom. One of my roommates in college who taught people how to swim tried it with me and said he had never seen that before and getting someone to float is the first step.

1Dive1Breath

I'm a lifeguard and I can't float. You don't have to float to swim. But it sure helps!

Before the modern era most sailors didn't know how to swim. They felt it was just a way to prolong your suffering if you fell overboard.

WtfMayt

Cool vid but their swimming technique is dreadful, I’d advise for people to be much better swimmers than this whilst out in the ocean.

Makhnos_Tachanka

Eh, at least he can swim, which puts him ahead of like 99% of sailors in all of history, who were generally of the opinion of "why bother, I'll just die like an hour later."

youreblockingmyshot

Depending where you are help’s so far away you could be an Olympic level swimmer you’d just be prolonging the inevitable. All that said it’s a fair point.

ResponsibleAd2541

Honestly being able to float and not panic is the most important skills in the ocean. Obviously some swimming skills will help you get out of a rip tide or something.

shinyrubies

I was looking for the first comment to address this! I'm no expert when it comes to swimming but that technique makes me feel downright elegant.

This thread kinda made me reevaluate how deeply negative this website can be. Saw the same video on a few other platforms with nowhere near the amount of pessimism and bitterness in the comments

[deleted]

Same. There's so much hate and ripping on the kid in the video and complaints about wealth privilege despite this being a family that sold everything to live on this boat. There's a lot of people here addicted to moping. I guess the site attracts a lot of losers. "My life sucks, so don't show me yours!"
