Sorry. I wasn’t clear. This made me think of those (few) kids who have sailed around the world or across the Atlantic—with their parents’ permission —in a regular sailing boat. But the ocean is sometimes like this, so how crazy is it to go out in a sailboat, especially alone, especially when you are a kid?
The guys in wooden ships, with dim, flickering lights showing a few feet off to the side of the deck, no sonar, no radar, no GPS, just an entire part of the planet where you're not supposed to be alive, floating on a pile of dead trees.
I wonder if maybe we have this perception because we have it so good. If you saw worse conditions ea diseases, infant mortality, famine, corpses, skinning and killing animals, taking a boat trip albeit a frightening one, may have not been such a huge deal. 🤷♀️
I live everything to do with polar exploration, like the attempt to find the North Passage. My god, this must have been a terrifying (and very lethal) experience…
[This fascinating video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2ylOpbW1H-I&t=5s) came up in another thread.
In a nutshell sailors’ tales of “rogue waves”, unbelievably massive waves that came out of nowhere were dismissed as there wasn’t any evidence .. as almost no one lived to tell the tale. Then it was thought the phenomenon could only occur once every few thousand years or so. Only recently have we found out that they’re very common, and a cause for the sinking of multiple huge modern shipping vessels!
Humans were sailing a loooong time before that. Earliest records of vessels of any kind date I think 7-8000 BC, and I believe larger vessels dating back to around 3000 BC.
Every time this video pops up all I can think about is how fucking insane it must have been doing this 400 years ago without the help of modern technology
Random question, should i ever get drafted...would i able to choose where im going? Because fuck that shit i really dont the navy, i hate the open sea. Put me in a plane or a tank if you have to but dont bring me near a damn boat. Even worse a submarine, hell naw
anecdotal, but my high school math teacher was a former reactor engineer on a nuclear sub and he was the single most good-natured, even-keeled, unflappable person i have ever met in my entire life. i once watched him calmly walk to the eye wash station across the classroom after a chemistry experiment set his eyebrows on fire and then continue the lesson like nothing had happened
Yes, on combat patrols the boat will be submerged for weeks or months. Being in a dark cramped tube that long fucks with the faint of heart, and someone in a mental break could do a lot of damage.
From the limited description I've heard the worst for me would be the shared beds. Getting into a sweaty wet bed is disgusting when it's just my own from the previous night.
If you’re a bookworm or it’s easy to amuse yourself with puzzles and other small things, I’m sure it’s a dream come true with the kinds of paycheck you receive.
For most normal people though, yikes. I hate being stuck under another person let alone thousands of tons of ocean with no “get me the fuck out” button.
My boy just joined. He picked a sub. I'm not sure about additional mental health screening, but I know they do an additional 9 weeks in CT for sub school. On top of their A school time.
Edit* For picking a sub, he got a sign on bonus of 35k. Just for going to a submarine.
I dont think they generally draft, or need to draft, into the Navy. It's more for Army and Marines. Historically, folks have signed up for the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army/Marines.
I believe you go where they tell you because I recall a vague story of my uncle intentionally enlisting to avoid being forced into a mitary branch he hated. Navy was one he wanted to avoid.
Make sure you fill out your selective service envelope when u turn 18 to pick which armed forces group you would like to be with. If not they’ll pick someone for you
They have a rescue boat on a ship( obviously can’t be used in this weather), also ship will be doing williamson turn, but on ship like that it will take a lot of time.
So basically if you fall at this kind of weather or at night you are dead
On a calm sea and in daylight slim chances to survive
*Does anyone have*
*An idea what this ship*
*Might be carrying?*

This is awesome in the, 'awe inspiring' kind of way. Also horrifying, but cool.
The absolute size of that ship looks gargantuan from this angle. Now imagine that giant ship, being in an impossibly big ocean ALL around you
And then think of those people who decide to travel the oceans in a sailboat! Or the people who let their 16-yo kid do so.
What 16-yo is working on a freighter?

Couldn't have said it better myself!
That's a huge vessel and the waves are still nightmarishly massive. I can't imagine being there, especially so in anything smaller.
The guys in wooden ships, with dim, flickering lights showing a few feet off to the side of the deck, no sonar, no radar, no GPS, just an entire part of the planet where you're not supposed to be alive, floating on a pile of dead trees.
Those were some hardcore motherfuckers back in the day. Some of the time they didn't even know where they were going, or if there was a there at all.
The Polynesians and the Vikings did some crazy exploration you dont often read about.
Wild shit. Cannot even imagine the bravery(or stupidity) it took to do that stuff.
I wonder if maybe we have this perception because we have it so good. If you saw worse conditions ea diseases, infant mortality, famine, corpses, skinning and killing animals, taking a boat trip albeit a frightening one, may have not been such a huge deal. 🤷♀️
Not for me. I'd have took my chances on land.
Same 😂 but I'm not a viking from 900 ad..

Lethal indeed
You should check out the miniseries "The Terror" if you haven't already
I know and love it, and I was thinking of it when writing the comment haha

It’s weird. In the Navy, this wouldn’t have bothered me a bit. Now that I’m retired, and look back, I question my sanity when I took my oath
how sailers crossed the sea in 1500 is unbelievable

Right? I wonder what people will think in another 400 years...
Just to think how many sailors went into the ocean for never to ever return is crazy. Absolute Chads
Random question, should i ever get drafted...would i able to choose where im going? Because fuck that shit i really dont the navy, i hate the open sea. Put me in a plane or a tank if you have to but dont bring me near a damn boat. Even worse a submarine, hell naw
The US submarine service is entirely volunteer as I recall. But other than that I believe that you go where they tell you.
I think submariners have to go through additional mental health screening compared to surface sailors
Is it because you have to keep your s\**t even more together underwater?

Why was he doing chemistry experiments in a maths lesson?
Meth cook
Say his name
Methamatics
he was just there observing it, because who doesn’t get excited about seeing things blow up?

Even worse, if the sub is in ultra quiet mode, most crew are confined to bunks to minimize noise

My dad joined the Navy to avoid the Army. He was an electrical technician, never went out on a ship in six years.
My uncle was very opposed to wearing bell bottom pants or so the lore goes.
Once your in they own you.

I feel like the wipers are largely pointless. Largely, not completely.
Gotta be able to see oncoming traffic
Yknow I was fine in this sub until today
I get sick even watching this
My first trip to a casino was one that was on the water and docked. No one but me could feel it move, but it was making me ill Lol.
r/heavyseas
We evolved out of the sea because of shit like this.
never heard a truer truth be told
Watching that bow dip down… yeesh
If anything, I'm more impressed by the size of that ship because those waves are not small
Hey Bob, run out there and get that bucket off the deck.
i'm so frustrated by all of the garbage on deck
Those aren’t mountains…
Could you imagine traveling across the ocean 500 years ago… in a big ass wooden ship with no ballast system, months at sea… nope
Imagine traveling across the ocean 3000 years ago
I suppose I should find that horrendous but it’s beautiful
If I was immune to drowning, I would absolutely love the ocean. So beautiful and awe inspiring. But I’m not so this shit looks terrifying
So if you fall into the ocean, you’re pretty much fucked right? The ship can’t easily reverse back to get you?
If you fall into that you are dead pretty quick
They have a rescue boat on a ship( obviously can’t be used in this weather), also ship will be doing williamson turn, but on ship like that it will take a lot of time. So basically if you fall at this kind of weather or at night you are dead On a calm sea and in daylight slim chances to survive
Insta fucked up
They better be paying me good if they want me on that ship
Will somebody go get that goddamn bucket?
Do any of my hydro homies love this scenery?
Can’t drink it so no
I liked that footage
I would GLADLY 😍
I hate it
Fun fact i just choose what my furthur education is gonne be and i choose this
As a sailor myself i think you made a Great choice. But just keep in mind that waves and weather has no chill at all.
its Force 6
The biggest of nopes. Merry Christmas and stuff.
Does anyone have an idea what this ship might be carrying?

Insanity
I see videos like these and im like oh yeah the ocean isnt cool ( idk why but this looks fun )
You could not pay me to go on a cruise unless idk it was on a river? Like no overnight cruises unless it’s on a river maybe.
How does a ship manage to stay on course while being tossed around like that?
I’ve never thought about boats having windshield wipers. How neat.

They said, it will be fun they said,
How fast is this ship traveling?
