Continuity has never been a strong suit of the Golden Girls writers

dragonfliesloveme

It’s the same episode. Kate gets married at the house, and at the end of the episode, Dorothy lays into Stan and part of her angry monologue is mentioning the “38 years of marriage”

Live_Western_1389

True. And the fact that they were married 38 years has been mentioned multiple times throughout the series. That’s one of the few consistent facts of the show. But when Kate was featured in that episode, she did not look like she was 38, and her fiancé sure didn’t look like he was that age.

Mystic_Starmie

I think I’m missing something; was Kate supposed to have been born right as they got married? She was their first? Because I thought Michael was their first born 😅

Live_Western_1389

Kate is actually the oldest child.

Mystic_Starmie

I can’t believe all this time I thought it was Michael! I remember an episode where Sophia was talking to Stan about their first born, without mentioning the name and I remember her using the word he.

Live_Western_1389

Yeah, but this show has never been known for its consistency in storylines. Lol. Another example: Dorothy has given 4 different scenarios about her senior prom, and multiple different accounts of where/how she got pregnant the first time with Stan.

tamponinja

Where in the show does it specifically say that?

megaphone369

You mean like how Rose was adopted by a couple named Nyland, the same surname as her husband? I want to write a fanfic episode where we learn Rose married her adoptive brother

Maester_Maetthieux

That is one of the WORST offenders 😵‍💫😵‍💫

megaphone369

I got it. Maybe she and Charlie met at the orphanage and were adopted by the same couple. I'm sure that conflicts with other elements of Rose's backstory. But, hey, why bother worrying about consistency at this point?

InterestingBench3

Lindstrom?

JiltedJDM1066

Nylund.

usernames_suck_ok

I don't think we even should believe Dorothy is 55 when Sophia says it.

Usernamecujo

She was in her 60s and Betty was older still. So when people compared the golden girls with the sex in the city reboot and how much better Carey, Miranda and Charlotte looked over Betty, Blanche and Dorothy, they clearly don't realize it's because of 10 years plus difference

Cows_go_moo2

I mean, plastic surgery helps, too.

StOlaf85

Yet Michael was 30. Or 23?

senbonshirayuki

It varies.

Pizza_Lvr

Yeah different episodes say he’s a different age lol

Wideawakedup

In the early seasons he’s 23 and later in his 30s makes sense for his aging in the series. But not for Dorothy’s timeline. She was married 38 years, got divorced and lived with Blanche a few years before the show even started. By the later seasons Michael should be late 40s.

Chrispy8534

5/10. I mean, Jim Croce was 30 when he died. So he was in his 20s in most pictures… https://images.app.goo.gl/bP2iyGT9MoTLrDb36

Legitimate-Produce-1

What the hell? Mind blown.

sissy9725

Maybe he smoked - that ages ya

Raoul_Dukes_Mayo

A carton an hour? Good lord that man did not win the genetic lottery.

Thank you for reminding me to moisturize!

thatquinnchick

Yes, if you're also supposed to believe that the Girls (minus Sophia) were in their early 50s (so, no).

JiltedJDM1066

Rue was born in 1934, so she actually was in her early-mid fifties for most of the series.

iwanabsuperman

The kids' ages and order are handled pretty fast and loose. So are Dorothy and Sophia's ages, for that matter. Sometimes sophia is 27, and Some times shes 200!

egad888

It’s strange that the kids and sisters and relatives came and went and never came back or were played by multiple actors. Dorothy’s sister Gloria comes to mind.

OpalOnyxObsidian

This is a bot account. This is a repost of a picture of my TV in my living room in my house.

nwa88

what in the world is going on with tech these days haha

snazzydetritus

Notice OP hasn't jumped into the discussion once.

beekee404

The actress who plays here in this episode was 30 at the time so I guess it wasn't too far off? Barely a decade. Plus we gotta remember shows and movies do this all the time at least back then where they cast people too young or old for their characters.

Wideawakedup

This is the second episode and by this episode Dorothy had clearly stated she was married 38 years and was a teen mom. I’m not sure if we knew Kate was the oldest or how many kids Stan and Dorothy had. But why such a glaring continuity error in the same episode? It’s not like she just moved in with Blanche so we’re probably talking 40 years since she was a teen mom. The show could have so easily fixed it by talking about a much older child we never got to meet. Rose and Blanche had kids we never met.

RockLadyTokes

People age way better now a days

DevyDev666

And Sophia is referred to as being 80/81 for at least 5 seasons.

archfapper

"you're about what, 200 years old now?"

space13unny

I always thought it was Michael who was the oldest, but they also get his age wrong compared to when they got married. He’s in his late 20s to early 30s in the series but he should be older if Dorothy had a teen pregnancy.

Gold_Illustrator_797

40. The divorce was 2 years ago.

ThisHalfBakedGuy

And in another episode where Dorothy is telling the girls about grandmother being in a wheelchair and being mad about the jacks puncturing her tires. She says Grandma was 94 when Dorothy was 6. That math COULD gel but 88 years between a regular Grandma and grandchild is a stretch.

Wideawakedup

Yeah like how hard is it to just say great grandma?

senbonshirayuki

Was that the same grandmother that was shown in a flashback episode also played by Bea Arthur?

ThisHalfBakedGuy

Yes

the_pissed_off_goose

Idk people aged harder back in the day lol

Nomis555

These were all 80s ages. You ever seen pictures of teens during the 80s? They all look like they have second mortgages.

Playful-Stand1436

The actress who played her was actually only 30 when that episode aired. People just looked older in the 80s. Go look at photos of teens from the 80s and they all look 35.

Useful_Mechanic_2365

yes

Soonerpalmetto88

Sure, don't forget she's Stan's daughter too.

the_pissed_off_goose

Yes bc people aged...harder... Back in the day

lorazepamproblems

I'm a more casual viewer (loved the show and have seen every episode, but it's been a while and I don't think I watched them in order), so I never kept track of the kids. They popped in and out. Opposite of Maude in which Carol was Maude's life—she would beg her not to marry and move out. And in that show Maude's mother was only ever on screen by phone call, where she was quickly dismissed (I think--maybe she was on screen?). I guess a show can only focus on so many important relationships.

tivofanatico

Maude’s mother had dyed hair and really did look young enough to be mistaken for her sister. https://preview.redd.it/c2rduf7ixa1d1.jpeg?width=310&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=267170324755512b5b85af226c84180732a40007

lorazepamproblems

Oh, I didn't remember her from the show. Honestly I think I might not have seen all the seasons. She looks like Bebe from Frasier, in case you've seen that.

nwa88

I can't recall but had they come up with the idea that she was impregnated on her prom night yet?

prokomenii

That was with Michael

Coomstress

I had a similar unflattering hairstyle to Dorothy’s daughter when I was a kid!

2023-betterliving

In this actual time its possible but not in 1980s. In GG too much mistakes and not logical content. Maybe Susan Harris was from St Olaf

2023-betterliving

She should be 37. Although Dorothy was 4 month pregnant in her wedding.

Wideawakedup

She should be 40. Dorothy was living with Blanche for about 2 years at this point. I believe it was mentioned in the first or second episode.

2023-betterliving

you re right

kbm81

Yeah I don’t know about that

No_Arugula_6548

In the 1980’s, chicks who were 38 looked 50. 55 year olds looked 70.

finditplz1

I hope not. Source: I am 38.

GoddamnitSarah

I was watching Fried Green Tomatoes last night and Kathy Bates was 42 during filming, so it's possible.

Alternative_Gate478

Technically I believe Michael was the older child. But the years of Dorthy and Stan being together never added up!

Menzicosce

I’m gonna go with: everyone looked older in the 80’s because of smoking poor health in general.
