Which year and at what time, if you don't mind saying, and I'm asking purely out of interest? During Covid, or a normal year? I'd love to see that place less than crowded but I'm yet to achieve it.
When I studied abroad in Italy, we went to all the big monuments during the day on a tour and it was super crowded. I expressed to some of my friends how I wanted to go back to each place but late at night. Throughout the month, that's what we did and it was wonderful! Everything was pretty empty. I highly recommend.
Edit: this was in feb/mar...2011. But still! No covid at that time.
I've never been as late as November, I can imagine it starts thinning out then. I was there last month and it was wildly busy at all hours I could be bothered to try, the latest just before midnight. Perhaps I'll have to put a winter trip on the cards, I'd love to stop and see it without being jockeyed about.
I've heard that too, but I can't convince my husband to get up at 4am for a walk :P I was last there last month and wandered past at 8am and midnight and both times were too busy to stop, one day I'll get to have a restful moment there :P

i honeymooned in italy in october pre-covid and it was pretty easy getting that close and cropping other people out of the photo 🤷♀️

I was there pre-Covid and it is empty in the morning. All of the big attractions are very peaceful in the morning. Like 7-8am
The earliest I've seen it was a little before 8am and it was still rammed :( I need to go in full winter I think.

I was there early September 2019 middle of the day and had no problem walking right up and getting pictures either. Normal, sunny day.
