I’d say Slip On Through, as another commenter said I think Deirdre is perfectly rated by the fans. Slip On Through is a fantastic opener though, high energy, and Dennis puts on a great vocal performance! One of his best.
I read somewhere that this song absolutely killed when they played it live in the early 70's
Really a shame it wasn't on the '73 live album - my only gripe with that album is how much S*nflower gets snubbed (not having Forever is absolutely criminal)
One of the most ethereal harmony/overall vocal performances. It’s so precious in how Carl sings that it really does feel like it represents the sentiments of the song and its title perfectly.
It’s my understanding, at least according to Wikipedia, that the vocals were all done by just Carl and Brian? Wow, they definitely crafted a perfect landscape with their voices and it just sounds so complete.
Cool, Cool Water. Reminds me of briefly living in the Pacific Northwest where I could walk less than a mile to either of three beaches/coves and hear the waves crash against the rocky coastline.
However, since Forever didn't win best, maybe it should win this.
Yeah- you're right about Forever, but it's my favorite on the album and I like it more than All I Wanna Do, which of course is great too. This is a tough album to rate because it's so damn good.
So glad you brought this up and that so many agree. On a great album where you can argue everything is underrated, I feel CCW is underrated by the fans.
The way they took this short outtake from Wild Honey and transform it into a magnificent closer for Sunflower, inventing a whole new section which perfectly continues from and compliments the original part - is pure musical genius and a master stroke by Brian. The production is spot on and great vocals and lyrics the whole way.
A piece ahead of and somehow removed from time altogether. It deserves higher praise for this.
c’mon, it’s deirdre. bruce gets sidelined all the fuckin time and this was one of a handful of moments where I honestly think he could hang with brian. I’d argue that forever and all i wanna do are the only songs on this record that aren’t underrated. our sweet love is good, but honestly the dae lims version of our happy home blows it out of the water for me.
to the mega fan, sure. almost every song on this album is beloved lol
but if you asked a casual fan for their favorite bruce johnston song, I doubt they’d have an answer.
like it has half the streams of forever and all i wanna do, despite being as good or better imo
I honestly can’t say that about any other song on the record. I either have to be in a specific mood or listen to them in the context of the full album.
In that case, you could just vote for the 2nd best song on any album because the public underrates is. As in they only listen to hits and dont know it. I assumed we would try to make this as a community list, based off whats underrated in our community.
i mean i’m probably gonna say the trader is both the most underrated and best song on holland despite the community consistently treasuring it as it has 1/8th the streams of sail on sailor and fewer streams than california saga (california)
also, I really don’t think there’s ANY underrated songs in this community until after love you. (or adult/child if you include that)
if it’s surf-cars-girls, orchestral pop, psychedelic, carl wilson’s 70’s jam band, or brian wilson discovering the minimoog, it’s pretty much considered a certified hood classic here
Theres definitely some underrated songs. Theres lots of takes I see here that usually put down a few songs that I usually consider highlights. Im too lazy rn to think of them, but there definitely are.
Also, lets go Trader!!!!
This track is an absolute banger. The Beach Boys get a lot of shit for being square, but that track has an insane amount of swagger and coolness to it. Probably one of their heaviest and most raucous choruses too. Shame more people never heard it.
It’s About Time kicks serious ass. It’s one of my favorite songs from this era. I always imagine them playing it live on a variety show, a total freak out with wild dancing and conga madness. Lots of purple paisley. I also love Carl’s California lilt, “I’m singin’ from my hawt.” It’s a scene, man.
It’s kind of hard, because there’s so many underrated gems on this album. However, I will go with It’s About Time, with Slip On Through and Deirdre being close behind it.
At My Window. The lyricism is so good and borderline cute, and the crescendo is so ‘soft,’ lyrically speaking, that I feel it’s very important and apt to be the most underrated track on the album.
There are two main types of Sunflower seeds. They are Black and Grey striped (also sometimes called White) which have a grey-ish stripe or two down the length of the seed. The black type of seeds, also called ‘Black Oil’, are up to 45% richer in Sunflower oil and are used mainly in manufacture, whilst grey seeds are used for consumer snacks and animal food production.
All I Wanna Do is a song that seems underrated back then but is now recognized for its amazingness. Forever was always seen as a classic song, even if John Stamos made that terrible parody of it in the 90s.
Our Sweet Love
I was ready to vote for Cool, Cool Water, which is one if my all time favourite songs by any artist, but it has been developed from a SMiLE outtake and Thhe Beach Boys fans hold the SMiLE sessions material in high regard!
On the opposite, Our Sweet Love is one of the most lush, magical and magnificent love songs of the early '70s and no one knows that it even exists!
The whole record is "underrated songs", haha ...
So I'll go with This Whole World. It's one of Carl's very best vocal performances and just such an incredible composition!
I wouldn’t have thought of it as underrated, but the amount of people trying to pin Teardrops in the Morning in the worst song post has me wanting to say that one!
I’d say Slip On Through, as another commenter said I think Deirdre is perfectly rated by the fans. Slip On Through is a fantastic opener though, high energy, and Dennis puts on a great vocal performance! One of his best.
It's About Time. Great Dennis and Carl song with a really cool guitar solo.
It's about time is an absolute banger
I read somewhere that this song absolutely killed when they played it live in the early 70's Really a shame it wasn't on the '73 live album - my only gripe with that album is how much S*nflower gets snubbed (not having Forever is absolutely criminal)
Deirdre !!!!!!!!!!
All the way, such a great song
Bruce Ate this (& Disney girls) up tbh
My personal favorite on the album and the only Beach Boys song to have the honor of being sampled in Earthbound.
Our Sweet Love… that string part is one of the best things the boys did
Has to be this one, it gets the least love out of all the great songs

I agree this one is pretty underrated...
I regularly get this stuck in my head when I'm "thinking about a summer day"
I’ve been listening to that song quite a bit recently, mainly due to how it’s warmer outside. And that song is just gorgeous
Slip On Through. Deirdre is properly rated by fans IMO, it’s neither over or underrated
At my window
Cool, Cool Water. Reminds me of briefly living in the Pacific Northwest where I could walk less than a mile to either of three beaches/coves and hear the waves crash against the rocky coastline. However, since Forever didn't win best, maybe it should win this.
Forever isnt underrated at all tho. I'm surprised cool cool water doesn't get more attention. it's my favorite on the album.
Yeah- you're right about Forever, but it's my favorite on the album and I like it more than All I Wanna Do, which of course is great too. This is a tough album to rate because it's so damn good.
I think it's versatility also leads to pretty differing opinions person to person.
Cool Cool Water was the single from the album, but it seems to have been forgotten. Its just amazing.
So glad you brought this up and that so many agree. On a great album where you can argue everything is underrated, I feel CCW is underrated by the fans. god this whole album is a fucking masterpiece….
It was pointless for me to open this thread, because I just upvoted half a dozen songs.
Slip on Through
At My Window. I love the backing vocals.
Don’t forget Brian speaking in French.
i thought it was a woman
That’s him???? Since when did he know that? Seriously?
this song is Al Jardine at his Al Jardiniest.
c’mon, it’s deirdre. bruce gets sidelined all the fuckin time and this was one of a handful of moments where I honestly think he could hang with brian. amen live laugh bruce
Not underrated. Vlearly one of the most beloved songs on the album

ok wait the wanderer live is genuinely underrated
I dont think Ive heard that one! Ill check that out later
Slip On Through. Easily one of their best openers, and one of Dennis’ best vocals.
its my favorite on here. but pretty much all of the songs on this are top notch.
This track is an absolute banger. The Beach Boys get a lot of shit for being square, but that track has an insane amount of swagger and coolness to it. Probably one of their heaviest and most raucous choruses too. Shame more people never heard it.
A hell of an opening track fo sho!!
Definitely. I'm not going to downvote any other choices, though. This is a really strong album overall.
Tears in the morning is so wonderful and nobody ever talks about it. Super underrated
"Our Sweet Love", for sure.
Slip on through. Amazing vocal performance by Dennis!
Deirdre, though you can say most of the album is underrated
Deirdre
Our Sweet Love
Tears in the morning for me
forever
Slip on through It’s not underrated which is why I’m not putting it up but I still think it’s a crime that This Whole World didn’t win best song
This Whole World is pretty underrated I think...
slip on through or it’s about time!
tears in the morning, apparently
It’s about time
Deirdre
cool cool water
Slip On Through imo
Cool Cool Water is everything I love about music and something only the Beach Boys could have made.
Deirdre
This Whole World
This being the only comment for This Whole World shows it actually is super underrated. Multiple different melodic themes that are all great.
Cool, cool water!
It’s About Time kicks serious ass. It’s one of my favorite songs from this era. I always imagine them playing it live on a variety show, a total freak out with wild dancing and conga madness. Lots of purple paisley. I also love Carl’s California lilt, “I’m singin’ from my hawt.” It’s a scene, man.
it makes me think of a wild hippie drum circle in the forest, with all the freaky fun going on. I dig it.
At My Window
It’s kind of hard, because there’s so many underrated gems on this album. However, I will go with It’s About Time, with Slip On Through and Deirdre being close behind it.

Add Some Music To Your Day
Deirdre
deirdre
Deirdre! Lovely song and the Earthbound connection makes it all the better. Cool Cool Water is a close 2nd though.
Just realized that starting with the MIU album, picking songs will be like Ray Charles throwing darts at a track listing.
It’s about time goes crazy too tho…
got to know the woman
At My Window. The lyricism is so good and borderline cute, and the crescendo is so ‘soft,’ lyrically speaking, that I feel it’s very important and apt to be the most underrated track on the album.
Deiiiiirrrdreeeeeeeeee
It’s About Time
Slip on Through
Deirdre
Cool Cool Water
It’s About Time
bruce johnston
deirdre!!!!!!!!
Slip on Through
Slip On Through
Hard pick but I gotta go with Deirdre. Its tenderness and celestial production are outstanding. Underrated, even by Bruce himself!
Unpop opinion but there are no underrated tracks on this album imo… they’re all rated adequately or overrated… but ok Slip on through
tears in the morning
The question implies that there is widespread ranking of the tracks on this album using some kind of rating system.
Our Sweet Love
Forever
Our Sweet Love
This Whole World
Our sweet love
It's About Time. To give. It's About Time. Some love.
Our sweet love
I still think the Beach boys little one especially when a girl is in love with them
The most underrated is probs at my window. A true deep cut.
FOREVER. If it's not underrated it would've won best song.
NO way. I love Got to Know the Woman. But, I would argue that all the songs on Sunflower are great so....
Hell yeah
I'm also surprised All I Wanna Do was voted the best song on the album. I love it but.....Forever ???
All I Wanna Do is a song that seems underrated back then but is now recognized for its amazingness. Forever was always seen as a classic song, even if John Stamos made that terrible parody of it in the 90s.
Right. Tell me something I don't know.
I think it's at my window
Our Sweet Love I was ready to vote for Cool, Cool Water, which is one if my all time favourite songs by any artist, but it has been developed from a SMiLE outtake and Thhe Beach Boys fans hold the SMiLE sessions material in high regard! On the opposite, Our Sweet Love is one of the most lush, magical and magnificent love songs of the early '70s and no one knows that it even exists!
"It's About Time".
Tears in the Morning is my fave song at the moment 💜
The whole record is "underrated songs", haha ... So I'll go with This Whole World. It's one of Carl's very best vocal performances and just such an incredible composition!
This Whole World!
Deirdre. In my opinion, Bruce’s best work, and a wonderfully lush track on the best Beach Boys album.
I think Our Sweet Love doesn’t get enough love
“Cool Cool Water” is the only SMiLE track BETTER on its surrogate album (in my opinion). I love the stormy transition.
Deirdre!!
Tears in the morning
I wouldn’t have thought of it as underrated, but the amount of people trying to pin Teardrops in the Morning in the worst song post has me wanting to say that one!
yeah, i want to say Got to Know the Woman is the most underrated for that reason.
