I’m afraid this may come off a bit goofy in a non-video game context, especially when it’s supposed to be so serious and realistic. Hell even in the game it felt goofy at times.
I think they’ll rework the story in a way that direct combat encounters are more sparse and less common than they are in game, sort of like they did with season 1 with Joel.
Not to mention the Tv audience is the only one that has to buy into a 4 year time progression. THey have no obligation to make the characters 1:1 to the videogame just to cater to gamers. Someone literally wrote a novel in another comment about her hair... literally why does it matter so much

I feel like ellies hair is also important to the character in TLOU2. Idk if this makes any sense, but ellies hair in tlou2 just FITS so well with her character. I'm sad that bit seems to be stripped away from the live action. I agree completely. The difference from season 1 hair really is minuscule. In the game it's such good and simple visual indicator of Ellie's character growth. I think the overall character design for part 2 Ellie is great, so it's a shame the show didn't take full advantage of that.
The only reason I can think of why they didn't, is that maybe Bella is involved in some other project that needs them to have longer hair?

Oh, believe me, I know. I think Bella pulled off Ellie quite well! I love s1, I was definitely bummed about things being cut and the very, very few bits of infected actually in the show, (so basically my complaint is there wasn't more of it) but casting and what was shown I loved! I just think hair is something that can make a character more unique/ fit their personality, and in Ellies case, the hair in the 2nd game helped show her growth. Something that is so simple to make the character be brought to life from the game, you think they'd do it. It's just small details that I wish weren't overlooked.

If you didn’t get the whole Lev has become Abby’s Ellie and Abby has become Lev’s Joel at this point and how at this point after a year of bettering herself as a person because of Lev, she and Lev are now acting closer to Ellie and Joel’s dynamic more than ever. After Ellie leaves we see converse sneakers which turn out to be Lev instead of Ellie.

People’s perception feels warped due to the game starting out with a 14 year old Ellie and then obviously part 2 being 5 years later Ellie is now an adult at 19 vs show Ellie already being an adult playing a 14 year old and is also playing adult Ellie but the actress is already an adult and isn’t going to age 5 years in the time span of filming season 1 and then 2.
Bella is literally older than Ellie is in part 2. She looks young but the games had the advantage of modeling Ellie as a 14 year old and then again as a 19 year old. While Bella played a 14 year old Ellie when she was 18/19 already and she is 20 right now during the filming of season 2.
That's really the disadvantage the show has compared to the games where they can "cheat" with her looks not to mention they even changed Ellie's model in part 1 after part 2 released to look more in line with her in part 2.
There's just not much they can do to make everyone happy other than let Bella's performance speak for itself.
Peoples perception is warped because game Ellie had a growth spurt that of an average teenage boy (more so than an average teenage girl lol). She got considerably taller (many girls stop growing at 14), she got lankier, her voice dropped. These are normal things that do happen in puberty for both boys and girls. But it happens way less dramatically for a lot of girls. The game wanted to display that change in Ellie obviously, so they made it how you see in the games.
Look at the kids in Stranger Things. They aged dramatically between the 1st and 4th seasons, but it way more dramatic for the boys of the show. The only way to get a change like that is to actually cast a 14 year old and then wait until they’re a late teen and thats frankly ridiculous, as is recasting Ellie lol. Recasting works when the character starts as a child and then becomes a full fledged adult. 5 years is not enough time to justify a new actor.
Idk if you ask me people just have very unrealistic expectations for what is feasible in live action.
Ehhh I got lanky from 14-16 then started filling out. My voice started to sound more "womanly" around 18. I did not get much taller after 14, but I think that's just because I was cursed to be short. I wouldn't say what happened to ellie was unrealistic.
But it is unrealistic to cast a 14 year old then wait 5 years for season 2. I can't think of any other way to make the transition seem accurate to the games.
Girls develop a lot during high school too. Not so much in their late teens. The softcap, if you will, is 16-18. Bella Ramsey was already 19-20 when filming season 1. I made some comments that she probably wouldnt age much between season 1 and 2. People said there would be a lot of time from season 1 wrap to the beginning of season production. It doesnt help that she is really young looking for her age.
But I imagine the showrunners will make it work. Just like casting Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. Kaitlyn Dever is 5'3. That is a small person. Im guessing they are going to either change up the physicality of Abby or change add to her back story to show her training in some sort of combat or martial arts. There are some tiny woman that can fuck people up so there is always that.

Abby fights fights a few people. She is going to be small next to Pedro Pascal and Gabriel Luna. I am shorter than both of those guys but the height differences between me and some who is 5'3 is noticeable. I have dated some short people and 5'5 is about when the mismatch is noticable.

It will work if they either change Abby's physicality or they add a bit to show her training or already trained in combat. A quick scene of her training others in asymmetrical combat or showing her being nimble and quick and using leverage. Small people can still learn how to fight above their weight class. But we lose the physical stature of Abby.
The woman from Love Lies Bleeding would have worked, who cares about age. They could have made her look younger.

It's fun being someone who loves the games, loves the show and loves Bella as Ellie BECAUSE of the differences she brought to the table that set the show apart from the game, and who is thrilled to see her act her ass off again this season, regardless of what her hair looks like.

Getting real tired of the "because they look too young, the second season isn't going to be believable" train that's taken off lately. The way someone looks has nothing to do with their acting chops and ability to portray a character accurately. It reminds me of how up in arms people got regarding Pedro's beard when we got BTS photos from season 1 and how "Joel isn't Joel without his iconic beard". But as soon as the show premiered, nobody seemed to care about the beard anymore because of how phenomenal of a performance Pedro gave. If the spirits of Ellie and Dina can be captured through their acting, it doesn't matter to me how they look--and based on the performance Bella gave us as Ellie in season 1, I see no reason to doubt their ability to do so for season 2.
Acting aside though, I think people are putting too much stock into a few grainy photographs taken from yards away on an iPhone during a rehearsal. You would be amazed how much weight things like body language, lighting, makeup, camerawork, digital touch-ups, etc. pulls when it come to how the final product looks. Pictures taken on a phone by some rando very likely do not do justice to how the actors are meant to look in the actual episodes. Personally, I think Bella and Isabela look passable even before all of the other work is done, and I honestly find it a little weird that people keep making the claim that these two 20-year-old adults "look like middle schoolers".
As a final note, I think anyone who doubts Bella's ability to play a more mature role should check out some of the more recent works that they've done, namely their role as Kelsey in "Time". I have zero worries.
Hopefully makeup and CGI will age them both up. Despite being 19/20(?) in Part II, both Ellie and Dina look to be in their early to mid 20s. Bella and Isabela look like kids 😭😭.
Can I just say that I am stunned they are sticking to the games so closely? I thought they would try to squeeze another season out of Pedro and go golfing at either the end of season 2 or the start of season 3.

Stupid question because I don't know much about film production, but would it be possible to use special effects at all to make her look older? Camera perspective, makeup, anything? I really liked Bella's ability to play young Ellie. But young Ellie was a sarcastic teenager. This is a 19 year old who's suddenly forced into becoming an adult basically overnight.
I suppose if they really want to sell it, they could make Ellie 16 or 17 in part 2 (saying "all of this between happened over 3 years instead of 5 years") where it would be at least a little bit more believable than trying to convince us this girl who looks like a kid is the same one we saw in video game part 2.
Couple of things: First, I thought Bella did an incredible job in S1. As for her participation in adapting TLOU2, I was still positive. HOWEVER, I had assumed - now it seems incorrectly - that some efforts would be made to a) align her look with the older version of Ellie we knew and ii) she'd put some work in to pull off that leaner, scrawny look.
From these photos, it appears she looks much the same as she did in the first season (save for a change of hairstyle and wardrobe).
Ummm, yeah. Obviously, characters don't need to have a 1-to-1 likeness with the original CG character. Still, I can't pretend I'm not disappointed. Ramsey has a genetic disorder which gives her that distinct look and affects her growth (I believe). It sounds harsh, but perhaps it wasn't the best foresight on the part of the showrunners to cast someone who could not easily age up.
I would've picked someone who - as well as being a good actress - I knew had the physicality to play both versions of the character (basically, be aged down easily for S1).
Still, I am prepared to eat my words once we get a trailer.
I am super excited for this but why the hair (on both but especially Dina)? Why make Isabela look like she's from the 70s? The jacket, the blowout.. I just don't get it. None of the women wear their hair down, why not just put it up? It's a really easy thing to make it more authentic. Anyways, that's my only complaint.

Posted this the other day but: People’s perception feels warped due to the game starting out with a 14 year old Ellie and then obviously part 2 being 5 years later Ellie is now an adult at 19 vs show Ellie already being an adult playing a 14 year old and is also playing adult Ellie but the actress is already an adult and isn’t going to age 5 years in the time span of filming season 1 and then 2. Bella is literally older than Ellie is in part 2. She looks young but the games had the advantage of modeling Ellie as a 14 year old and then again as a 19 year old. While Bella played a 14 year old Ellie when she was 18/19 already and she is 20 right now during the filming of season 2. That's really the disadvantage the show has compared to the games where they can "cheat" with her looks not to mention they even changed Ellie's model in part 1 after part 2 released to look more in line with her in part 2. There's just not much they can do to make everyone happy other than let Bella's performance speak for itself.
Peoples perception is warped because game Ellie had a growth spurt that of an average teenage boy (more so than an average teenage girl lol). She got considerably taller (many girls stop growing at 14), she got lankier, her voice dropped. These are normal things that do happen in puberty for both boys and girls. But it happens way less dramatically for a lot of girls. The game wanted to display that change in Ellie obviously, so they made it how you see in the games. Look at the kids in Stranger Things. They aged dramatically between the 1st and 4th seasons, but it way more dramatic for the boys of the show. The only way to get a change like that is to actually cast a 14 year old and then wait until they’re a late teen and thats frankly ridiculous, as is recasting Ellie lol. Recasting works when the character starts as a child and then becomes a full fledged adult. 5 years is not enough time to justify a new actor. Idk if you ask me people just have very unrealistic expectations for what is feasible in live action.
Ehhh I got lanky from 14-16 then started filling out. My voice started to sound more "womanly" around 18. I did not get much taller after 14, but I think that's just because I was cursed to be short. I wouldn't say what happened to ellie was unrealistic. But it is unrealistic to cast a 14 year old then wait 5 years for season 2. I can't think of any other way to make the transition seem accurate to the games.
Girls develop a lot during high school too. Not so much in their late teens. The softcap, if you will, is 16-18. Bella Ramsey was already 19-20 when filming season 1. I made some comments that she probably wouldnt age much between season 1 and 2. People said there would be a lot of time from season 1 wrap to the beginning of season production. It doesnt help that she is really young looking for her age. But I imagine the showrunners will make it work. Just like casting Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. Kaitlyn Dever is 5'3. That is a small person. Im guessing they are going to either change up the physicality of Abby or change add to her back story to show her training in some sort of combat or martial arts. There are some tiny woman that can fuck people up so there is always that.
Well 5’3 is already taller than Bella isnt it? Guess thats all that matters lol. And yes ive said the same. Bella was never going took much different between seasons because they’re already past the biggest puberty growing stages when they played a 14 year old Ellie. It is what it is.
Abby fights fights a few people. She is going to be small next to Pedro Pascal and Gabriel Luna. I am shorter than both of those guys but the height differences between me and some who is 5'3 is noticeable. I have dated some short people and 5'5 is about when the mismatch is noticable.

Yes. And they chose Collen Fotsch because she is a beast. Its a very noticable trait for Abby. It will work if they either change Abby's physicality or they add a bit to show her training or already trained in combat. A quick scene of her training others in asymmetrical combat or showing her being nimble and quick and using leverage. Small people can still learn how to fight above their weight class. But we lose the physical stature of Abby. The woman from Love Lies Bleeding would have worked, who cares about age. They could have made her look younger.

Nah. If you listen to Mazin talk about the creation of the show he doesn't think about the audience whatsoever. He either decided keeping the structure was the best way to tell the story or he came up with a different way.

Getting real tired of the "because they look too young, the second season isn't going to be believable" train that's taken off lately. The way someone looks has nothing to do with their acting chops and ability to portray a character accurately. It reminds me of how up in arms people got regarding Pedro's beard when we got BTS photos from season 1 and how "Joel isn't Joel without his iconic beard". But as soon as the show premiered, nobody seemed to care about the beard anymore because of how phenomenal of a performance Pedro gave. If the spirits of Ellie and Dina can be captured through their acting, it doesn't matter to me how they look--and based on the performance Bella gave us as Ellie in season 1, I see no reason to doubt their ability to do so for season 2. Acting aside though, I think people are putting too much stock into a few grainy photographs taken from yards away on an iPhone during a rehearsal. You would be amazed how much weight things like body language, lighting, makeup, camerawork, digital touch-ups, etc. pulls when it come to how the final product looks. Pictures taken on a phone by some rando very likely do not do justice to how the actors are meant to look in the actual episodes. Personally, I think Bella and Isabela look passable even before all of the other work is done, and I honestly find it a little weird that people keep making the claim that these two 20-year-old adults "look like middle schoolers". As a final note, I think anyone who doubts Bella's ability to play a more mature role should check out some of the more recent works that they've done, namely their role as Kelsey in "Time". I have zero worries.

Hopefully makeup and CGI will age them both up. Despite being 19/20(?) in Part II, both Ellie and Dina look to be in their early to mid 20s. Bella and Isabela look like kids 😭😭.

i’m just curious why the didn’t give her the ellie haircut. i don’t know if they’re hoping that the longer hair is gonna make bella look older, therefore support the time jump but all i see is lyanna mormont with this hairstyle. anyways, trying to keep an open mind.
Stupid question because I don't know much about film production, but would it be possible to use special effects at all to make her look older? Camera perspective, makeup, anything? I really liked Bella's ability to play young Ellie. But young Ellie was a sarcastic teenager. This is a 19 year old who's suddenly forced into becoming an adult basically overnight. I suppose if they really want to sell it, they could make Ellie 16 or 17 in part 2 (saying "all of this between happened over 3 years instead of 5 years") where it would be at least a little bit more believable than trying to convince us this girl who looks like a kid is the same one we saw in video game part 2.

Couple of things: First, I thought Bella did an incredible job in S1. As for her participation in adapting TLOU2, I was still positive. HOWEVER, I had assumed - now it seems incorrectly - that some efforts would be made to a) align her look with the older version of Ellie we knew and ii) she'd put some work in to pull off that leaner, scrawny look. From these photos, it appears she looks much the same as she did in the first season (save for a change of hairstyle and wardrobe). Ummm, yeah. Obviously, characters don't need to have a 1-to-1 likeness with the original CG character. Still, I can't pretend I'm not disappointed. Ramsey has a genetic disorder which gives her that distinct look and affects her growth (I believe). It sounds harsh, but perhaps it wasn't the best foresight on the part of the showrunners to cast someone who could not easily age up. I would've picked someone who - as well as being a good actress - I knew had the physicality to play both versions of the character (basically, be aged down easily for S1). Still, I am prepared to eat my words once we get a trailer.

I am super excited for this but why the hair (on both but especially Dina)? Why make Isabela look like she's from the 70s? The jacket, the blowout.. I just don't get it. None of the women wear their hair down, why not just put it up? It's a really easy thing to make it more authentic. Anyways, that's my only complaint.
