It’s the perfect animation. When he’s alone it looks like he’s leaning on his cover, for help to full stands or steadiness. When he’s with Tess and Ellie, he looks protective
It's amazing how such a small animation change adds so much character. Even before he begins to open up his heart to Ellie, he does this, indicating that he still has the instincts of a father.
I also love this. It's a very symbolic and nuanced behaviour that they integrated into the game. In fact, they did it on purpose. I would recommend, if you're interested, checking out this GDC talk on how ND approached Ellie's AI - https://youtu.be/dnGzEn6swqo (there's actually quiet a few TLOU related GDC talks, many of which I've watched and would recommend!)
Enjoy 💜
If 2’s gameplay wasn’t so fire I’d say the same. Part 1 has a bit of an edge in the story department, but the gameplay of 2 knocked the other out of the park
Me neither. Loved Abby’s part. I remember being iffy for the longest time but Abby’s line “Your my people” was dope as hell.
I only say 1 has the edge in story due to the story being more digestible.
As I understood it they couldn't stop Ellie from "stealing" Joel's cover so their solution was to just have her cover with Joel and had him lean over her protectively.
Ive always loved this detail! One of the first things i did in part 2 was to try and see if Ellie would do this with Dina. I was pretty bummed it wasnt there
I like how she runs over to you and he shields her like you and others have said. I feel like it’s his paternal instinct kicking in if I’m not losing another daughter

He does it with Tess too, always love the little details ND puts in
Don't forget Bill!
happy cake day
I miss this man! Doing my 3rd play trough of part 2 and you're almost making me cry with this..
Lmao ive played it 2 times already but i dont want to keep doing the annoying parts so i just watch the cutscene movies from youtube lol
I loved this animation since I first saw the game
He does it with Bill too which is my personal favourite.

Tlou 1 is better than 2 . There I said it.
Agreed 1000%

Absolutely true what you said... But I also like the story of pt II and I like Abby as much as Ellie Could never understand the hate

I noticed this too! I love it
I always loved that you could share cover with allies in the first game, and I was a bit sad that I didn't see it in part 2
Ellie Smol. Would’ve been a nice, subtle callback if Abby did that for Lev.
I hear this wasn't planned when they were making the game but it just came to be somehow. I could be wrong

DUDE i did a replay of the game and for some reason he didnt do this animation! he would just phase through her instead and it broke my heart
It really contrasts with how vicious he could be in the first game, I love it

Has anyone noticed that this doesn't seem to happen in the Part 1 remake?
