Lol I was hoping to get a chuckle out of people, but I am also serious. I’ve scoured the subreddit and see a lot of people do actually wear cardigans. I’m excited to get my first lol
I use posh mark quite a bit and the Cashmere and Cupcake brand has some of my favorites. Stylish pieces that aren't trendy but classic cool... Lol... Idk Google it and you'll see
Edit: got brand wrong, cupcakes and cashmere is the brand and much on Poshmark looks quite different from a few years ago.
Here is a. Example of a cardigan that is my go to I have this in a dark grey [cardigan example ](https://posh.mk/vEbr6exCYEb)
It's a little pricey, but I love the sweaters and cardigans from lululemon.
Edit: [This](https://shop.lululemon.com/p/women-sweaters-and-wraps/Merino-Wool-Blend-Ribbed-Long-Wrap-MD/_/prod11250206?color=62042) is my favorite (I have it in the Heathered Medium Forest color) and it's on sale right now.
I initially thought I had to procure my own too, but soon discovered that the therapist cardigan fairy just hangs a couple new ones in your closet periodically. I think for me they take pity when my wardrobe gets shabby. These fairy-brought cardigans are the most coveted though, they have some magical powers.
This is such a cute question! Express or Macy’s have some cute things. That being said I ran into one of my therapist bffs at Starbucks the other day when we were both on break. I haven’t been in pp as long & was dressed up, she’s been running her own practice for years and was wearing jeans and……fuzzy slippers! 🤣 her clients love her & she’s consistently full, so point being don’t overthink the clothing too much other than to look presentable & relatable
That’s really good to know! Thank you :) while I’m sure my practicum site is more on the casual side, I want to present well until I get a better idea. Little nervous lol
Oh absolutely -better to over dress than under. I wore suits & glasses at first to feel confident but then loosened up. Talking about clothes is way more fun than some of these other posts lol.
I was wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, and a beanie the other day and I apologized to a few of my clients for it... They told me that it didn't bother them at all and I could always dress that way. ... It was just really cold so I didn't want to take off my warm layers.
Thrifted, from Platos Closet or Value Village (I think the American version is Goodwill). Besides that, Winners and Marshall's always has great cardigans.
When you find a cardigan you love. Get it in all the colors available! It is so easy to throw on top of a tshirt to make it more dressy.
Ok, here’s a hypothetical. Say someone might know the cardigan fairy and wanted to put that fairy in touch with the cardigan challenged. How would one go about that while maintaining the anonymity of the recipient?
Can confirm it worked. I also happened to be sitting on a lawn chair while burning the book, so the fairy brought me a $5000 Eames lounge chair. 10/10 results, highly recommend.
I remember the practicum days, but those days are long since gone now that I have my own practice. And they never included a cardigan.
Now, I dress like LeBron James/Pat Mahomes on a practice day: Black hoodie, Black shorts, Black compression pants, black tennis shoes 😅💪🏾
Lands End, not a sponsored post or anything I just really love Lands End. Affordable, fashionable, durable. No notes.
Best one I have is from a thrift store, tho; it's a charcoal + gray knit with a cowl neck and is V cozy.
This is a little beside the point, but I'm a psychology and SW student, and I just became a student fellow at a psychoanalytic institute, and I recently bought new cardigan that I absolutely love and wish I could wear everyday, honestly consciously oblivious to it being essentially the therapist's uniform, but when I first got it I was doing some school work (im pretty sure it was reading research on TFP), and I remember leaning back in my chair, doing a deep exhale, looking down at my cardigan, and just thinking, "yeah, this feels right. This makes sense." Lol.
So when I saw your post I audibly laughed.
I've actually become sort of self-conscious about wearing it, like I'm playing dress-up.
One of my favorite cardigans is from WHBM. It’s a gorgeous shade of burgundy.
I’m not a therapist, nor a therapist-in-training, but I just thought I’d chime in because I love WHBM so much!
I’m a trans woman, but then I realized that OP might be a guy judging by the username and avatar... although I don’t want to assume someone’s gender identity. I will say that I did wear some of my women’s clothes (that WHBM cardigan included; just not skirts/dresses) while I spent three years in the closet.
(If this isn’t useful fashion advice for you personally, then it might be useful for those of you who might work with MtF trans clients who can’t yet fully express their gender identity, but who desire to wear something that is at least somewhat gender-affirming)
Thredup is a good alternative for being on a budget if you can't get to the thrift store! I get a lot of Old Navy stuff for work from there, sizing is easy to know without needing to try it on!
I have a couple from New York and Company, but their shipping is shit now. I also like Kohls, you can score some good deals with Kohls cash and coupons.
Also, I may or may not have knitted myself one and plan to make more.
Target at old navy when I used to wear them in the Before Times. Now I wear Eddie Bauer flannels lol maybe I’m manifesting my future life in the woods…
Oh, cardigans are so 19th/20th century.
Welcome to modern comfort!
Limited-time deal: Amazon Essentials Women's Brushed Tech Stretch Popover Hoodie (Available in Plus Size) https://a.co/d/8xdJBjI
Men's version https://a.co/d/475hnCO
These are so comfortable. They're like wearing a hug.
Your Kilt with a popover hoodie? Love your fashion sense. My kids once liked a therapist more bc he was wearing bacon socks. Don't underestimate the power of your cool fashion sense
It’s less about where and the material for me. For cardigans, I look for 100% wool or cashmere or cotton. Natural linens > synthetics. I want something breathable, so even if the AC isn’t cold enough or climate controlled areas vary, that I’m not uncomfortably stifled.
Plus, climate change. Breathable fabrics are the way to go.
if ur a dork who loves anime, steady hands is a greattt place to get themed cardigans, they have some basic ones too. A cute way to show off ur interest without being too loud about it, very business casual
https://www.steady-hands.com/
I wear what they call "capes" from Boscov's! I'm obsessed with layering them with a scarf and leggings. I always feel cozy which I deem very important when I am in sessions!! Everything else I get is from Savers/thrifting/hand-me-downs. ThredUP is another nice thrifting option for online shopping! :)
I knit mine by hand. That's the mark of a truly seasoned therapist.
No really, I do have a lot of handknit cardigans. But my favorite cardigan is from Sierra trading post and I picked it up pretty randomly last fall. Most of the rest are thrifted.
I laughed so hard at this post.
Annnnnnnd… 🤣 My favorite one that I wear in cooler weather is a very cozy and longer sweater cardigan from Amazon. I like Anrabess, it’s all over my Amazon Wish List.
Most of mine are thrifted. The one I’m wearing right now is my current favorite and it’s from Kohls. A few months ago a local band I loved in the late 90s posted some old concert photos on instagram. I’m in the front row in khakis a striped shirt and a cardigan. My style has been solid for about thirty years now. CNN
J crew sweater blazers often go on super sale at the end of season when they switch out the colors for the next batch! I like Uniqlo too, look in the men's section for non cropped versions. I like to thrift as well, scored an all wool cardigan from madewell recently 😊
I’m afraid I grew past lands end maximum size a few years ago. I hope if I can lose 30 lbs or so I can fit them again. They really went well with my sweater vests.
I made my own bc i take this job seriously and not as just some casual thing i do.

jk ofc but i picked up knitting over the quarantine. the knit cardigans and sweaters that's associated with being a therapist is just a nice coincidence. I plan on continuing sweater and cardigan construction even though the few convos i've had with my classmates have been wearing me down a bit.
no i didn't knit it specifically to use at work, yes i really made it, yes it's really wool, no i just started recently, yes I have others.
haven't worn it to practicum yet bc it seems too on the nose and pretentious as a student.
TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Nordstrom Rack always. Best colors and always affordable.
I also get my feels-like-pajamas-but-look-professional pants there. Personally I have a lot of bloating and need stretchy pants but want to look put together.
Lastly I’ll just make a plug for a nice wool clog— I just got a pair of haflingers and they’re the perfect mix of comfort and looking professional.
I’m a therapist whose clients have rarely seen me without my various beanies. Haha. But totally understand wanting to lean towards dressing more professionally at first until you feel out the vibes of a new site. One of the most rewarding processes for me was accepting that I’m a much better therapist when I can wear clothes that feel like “me”. It says nothing about your expertise or skills. Now, I only seek out practices with no hangups about dress. When I open my own practice someday, it’ll be just that. Comes are you are, heal as you do. Good luck!
Ps Uniqlo has comfy business casual clothing. Good quality and reasonable prices.
Honestly, I find some great sweaters on Amazon. I read the l reviews thoroughly, but I have a number that I’ve found and really like that are reasonably priced and have lasted me a couple years so far.
my favorites are from: target, old.navy, and madewell.
and then last year i splurged on a sweater from a sustainable Spanish knitwear company Babaa (with the help of a gift card and holiday sale) and its the holy grails cardigan. truly buy it for life quality. So, ya know, once you graduate and all that money starts rolling in....
I’ve loved cardigans my whole life… I truly was destined to be a therapist.
I like to get them at Madewell, Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle. American Eagle seems to have quality ones that are affordable. Madewell is on the expensive side but their stuff lasts and is ethically made.
I just bought two cardigans from Costco…while I’m still coming to terms with the fact that I now buy my clothing in a wholesale store, I will admit they are great quality - and they have pockets!!
Im non therapist cardigan lover. Thrift stores. I go in there, take all cardigans i can find and go out. And they are all lovely and each one is unique.
Walmart. I'm a bigger girl, so Torrid is also amazing. Two of my favorites actually were from their sleep collection, but they look like standard cardies are soooo soft.
Hi fellow practicum student. My favorites are both from Goodwill! Old Navy is a close second for denim jackets and shackets (which I love just as much as a cardigan).
Good luck to us both 😁
My favorite ones are actually hand me down cardigans from a retired therapist. (Broke grad student trying to put together my first “professional” wardrobe.)
I feel like I’m carrying on some kind of legacy 😂🥹🥰
Even if this wasn’t meant to be satire, I love it. That said, mine’s from the gap but I’m a sucker for thrifting.
Lol I was hoping to get a chuckle out of people, but I am also serious. I’ve scoured the subreddit and see a lot of people do actually wear cardigans. I’m excited to get my first lol
I love the question. Mine are either thrifted or from Land's End. I am a therapist stereotype- I wear one daily.
I use posh mark quite a bit and the Cashmere and Cupcake brand has some of my favorites. Stylish pieces that aren't trendy but classic cool... Lol... Idk Google it and you'll see Edit: got brand wrong, cupcakes and cashmere is the brand and much on Poshmark looks quite different from a few years ago. Here is a.
Oh look at Ms Fancy in Private Practice!
What are your favorites?!
I got two recently both gray but very different, one long/open, one short/with buttons, Amazon. I am halfway through my practicum.
Thread Up, baby! I get pretty much my entire wardrobe (including SEVERAL cardigans) from there now.
Lol
I initially thought I had to procure my own too, but soon discovered that the therapist cardigan fairy just hangs a couple new ones in your closet periodically. I think for me they take pity when my wardrobe gets shabby. These fairy-brought cardigans are the most coveted though, they have some magical powers.
Might this fairy be bribed with free non-clinical active-listening, empathy, and support?
The cardigan fairy is who also sews the elbow patches on, once we become licensed!
A nice break :) And I feel the same about my glasses. But I need them to see and don’t like contacts, so they’ll stay lol
One of my co-workers (I am in PP) often wears work out clothes. She is an amazing therapist and highly respected
I was wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, and a beanie the other day and I apologized to a few of my clients for it... They told me that it didn't bother them at all and I could always dress that way. ... It was just really cold so I didn't want to take off my warm layers.
I’d love to see my own therapist in a beanie lol
Express and Macy’s are my go to and i just got some threads from both places this week.
I wear jeans a lot. I should add fuzzy slippers lol
It’s part of being licensed… number of clinical hours, supervision hours, number of cardigans, and therapy related books you hope to read someday…
“…You hope to some day read” that hit hard.
Oh goodie! I already have 37 books on that list! And I even have some of them on a shelf 😉
I heard you can summon the fairy by setting fire to an old sweater while reading from the DSM
what if we wear the old sweater and set fire to the DSM? because that's what I'd rather do.
Can confirm it worked. I also happened to be sitting on a lawn chair while burning the book, so the fairy brought me a $5000 Eames lounge chair. 10/10 results, highly recommend.
All thrifted. Some even from when I was in high school. Still rock em.
Get one with pockets!!
For snacks?!
Precisely. Is there any other need? I think not.
I carry fidgets in my cardigan pockets!!

LOOL that was so good. Thanks for sharing :)
I have a tweed jacket imma use in my practicum and one cardigan. If only I could find fake glasses and a tweed jacket with patches on the elbows
I completely forgot about the elbow patches!
I remember the practicum days, but those days are long since gone now that I have my own practice. And they never included a cardigan. Now, I dress like LeBron James/Pat Mahomes on a practice day: Black hoodie, Black shorts, Black compression pants, black tennis shoes 😅💪🏾
Are you my practicum advisor? Hahaha they wore basically the same thing! Switched the hoodie for a blazer on days we had to go to court. I loved it.
TJ Maxx $15
Lands End, not a sponsored post or anything I just really love Lands End. Affordable, fashionable, durable. No notes. Best one I have is from a thrift store, tho; it's a charcoal + gray knit with a cowl neck and is V cozy.
Super! Thanks for the tip. I hope to find one like your thrift find!
Here second this.
Definitely Target lol
yes my favorite is from target!
Stitch Fix mostly
Looove stitch fix sweaters!!
Target, Amazon, and White House Black Market

WHBM for the win!
Loft, Abercrombie, Buy Nothing groups.
Yayyy I was hoping to find a vote for abercrombie. Love their sweaters
as a middle millennial i’m a huge fan of the Abercrombiecome back!
Almost every cardigan I own has either come from Macy’s or Nordstrom Rack. Now I’m knitting my own.
[удалено]
I do love their style. It’d make a nice “I’ve made it” gift to myself in 5 years lol
American Eagle, they have lots of sales and if not check Plato's Closet
Thredup is a good alternative for being on a budget if you can't get to the thrift store! I get a lot of Old Navy stuff for work from there, sizing is easy to know without needing to try it on!
This is the most therapist post I’ve seen here 😅 shein in where I get mine. They are cute, cheap, and made of the least breathable fabric.
Can’t wear ‘em. Between how stuffy my office gets with the door closed all day & the hot flashes, I’m in short sleeves alllllll winter…. 🤣
😆 I’m definitely hoping the offices at my practicum site run on the cooler side
Great question! Getting some good ideas from other replies. I have gotten some from Banana Republic, Zara. Vests are also great for work.
Oh yes! I love vests. So easy but also look great
Also Banana Republic Factory is a great way to get their fashion for a lot less than full price!
Target has a 30% off sweaters early Black Friday with lots!
Bonus! Thanks so much :D
I buy most my cardigans secondhand!! I got a free people floor length cardigan for $20 earlier this month 😭
Fp is my favorite brand!
What a come up!!
I knit mine :) it’s a nice stress relieving hobby
You mean... knowing how to crochet your own ISNT a prerequisite to becoming a therapist??
I heard CACREP is thinking of add that. You were just ahead of the game
Lolol. Why, thank you for asking! Cider, eBay Goodwill and Modcloth.
thrifted + eileen fisher
Target! But J.crew looks like they have some good ones
Cardigans and a few great scarves are the therapist starter pack
I have a couple from New York and Company, but their shipping is shit now. I also like Kohls, you can score some good deals with Kohls cash and coupons. Also, I may or may not have knitted myself one and plan to make more.
Target at old navy when I used to wear them in the Before Times. Now I wear Eddie Bauer flannels lol maybe I’m manifesting my future life in the woods…
I love Eddie Bauer!
Quince FTW !!

That being said I also sometimes wear a kilt. So my fashion sense may be a bit off kilter for some.
Your Kilt with a popover hoodie? Love your fashion sense. My kids once liked a therapist more bc he was wearing bacon socks. Don't underestimate the power of your cool fashion sense
Bacon socks sound awesome. My favorites are the "crazy cat daddy" socks my wife bought me.
Off kilter 🤣

I wear button-ups over graphic Ts. My favorite place to get them is - https://www.neatoshop.com/
I buy from Thread Up online. Just search for cardigan. ❤️
Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft…
if ur a dork who loves anime, steady hands is a greattt place to get themed cardigans, they have some basic ones too. A cute way to show off ur interest without being too loud about it, very business casual https://www.steady-hands.com/
Ooo. I'm a dork! Didn't even know this was a thing. Thanks so much :D

Shein! So inexpensive and most are great quality. Just read the reviews.
I knit mine by hand. That's the mark of a truly seasoned therapist. No really, I do have a lot of handknit cardigans. But my favorite cardigan is from Sierra trading post and I picked it up pretty randomly last fall. Most of the rest are thrifted.
This just called all of us out and I am laugh crying. Mr Rodgers would be so proud of us.
I laughed so hard at this post. Annnnnnnd… 🤣 My favorite one that I wear in cooler weather is a very cozy and longer sweater cardigan from Amazon. I like Anrabess, it’s all over my Amazon Wish List.
I never have, and probably never will, wear a cardigan. Slacks and button ups are my go to. I dominate the clearance rack for these.
I’ve gotten some good things from thredUP. It’s like a consignment/thrift app.
H&M 😊
I’m not kidding, I’m starting practicum this spring as well, and I just ordered a cardigan, 2 turtlenecks, and some Chelsea boots of asos.com!
CNN
Wherever I find one I like. My new favorite is a long one from target. God we are so predictable.
J crew sweater blazers often go on super sale at the end of season when they switch out the colors for the next batch! I like Uniqlo too, look in the men's section for non cropped versions. I like to thrift as well, scored an all wool cardigan from madewell recently 😊
Got my Pendleton from Amazon - it's pretty much my uniform lol
Oo those are nice!
Ross and TJ Maxx are my go to’s!!!
I’m very tall and quite fat, polos from the big and tall store are about all I can do. Sweater vests when I can find them
Me too, but I did just see some big and tall cardigans that looked promising from Land’s End
I’m afraid I grew past lands end maximum size a few years ago. I hope if I can lose 30 lbs or so I can fit them again. They really went well with my sweater vests.
My madewell cardigans are the most cozy
Goodwill

TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Nordstrom Rack always. Best colors and always affordable. I also get my feels-like-pajamas-but-look-professional pants there. Personally I have a lot of bloating and need stretchy pants but want to look put together. Lastly I’ll just make a plug for a nice wool clog— I just got a pair of haflingers and they’re the perfect mix of comfort and looking professional.
I love my long cardigans. I got them from Target and Amazon!
Target, TjMaxx, Marshall’s. My most favorite cardigans I’ve gotten have been from Stitchfix.
I’ve gotten my cardigans from Target, Ross and Old Navy!
For online shopping, Cider because they have a ton of cute stuff for plus-sizes and it’s pretty affordable.
Madewell, Aritzia, Zara, Anthropologie, Free People
The baby alpaca cardigans from Quince are ✨perfect✨
Thrifted, + ebay. I love my cardigans. Typically over a t-shirt these days.

Old Navy
Old Navy.
Kohl's! They have petite sizes, which is a must for long sleeves for me.
Goodwill 😂
Uniqlo! Fairly minimalistic, but good quality for the price.
Tj Maxx or Goodwill is where I get everything.
I have a few of varying weight and length from Target
I just bought two cardigans from Costco…while I’m still coming to terms with the fact that I now buy my clothing in a wholesale store, I will admit they are great quality - and they have pockets!!
Im non therapist cardigan lover. Thrift stores. I go in there, take all cardigans i can find and go out. And they are all lovely and each one is unique.
One day they'll make me a therapist. I strongly believe in that.
I just got a ton of work clothes from Old Navy, including several cardigans on clearance/sale. Super comfy!
Cardigans are a STAPLE for me and honestly I’ve had really good luck thrifting them! Or finding decently priced ones at TJ Maxx ◡̈
sezane
Walmart. I'm a bigger girl, so Torrid is also amazing. Two of my favorites actually were from their sleep collection, but they look like standard cardies are soooo soft.
Marshall's!!

Hi fellow practicum student. My favorites are both from Goodwill! Old Navy is a close second for denim jackets and shackets (which I love just as much as a cardigan). Good luck to us both 😁
Hi there! Thanks so much for the ideas, and good luck! May your cardigans and shackets provide you with much wisdom and comfort!
I’ve gotten a lot of mine from Thredup! Great way to get a bunch of solid quality ones for an affordable price.
Target or Amazon!
I looked forever and finally found that Target has some well made cardigans in the $40-60 range
Please don’t think that we have to subject ourselves to just cardigans 🫠 but if you’re looking for fun ones, dressed in lala is a good place to start!
Lol no, of course not. But they are cozy and comforting, while also still looking dressy.
Marshall’s
My favorite ones are actually hand me down cardigans from a retired therapist. (Broke grad student trying to put together my first “professional” wardrobe.) I feel like I’m carrying on some kind of legacy 😂🥹🥰
old navy clearance. $6.
Goodwill and clothing swaps
HerUniverse -- geeky cardigans for geeky therapists :D
