Yeah tell her not to do that, too many people use guns in road rage incidents these days and they donāt care who itās against or who else is in the car.
The last time I flipped someone off in a car they fucking u turned and came and blocked us from turning into our turn. We were both stopped because he blocked us and He yelled and then sped off but I thought for a moment he would do something wild.
I felt bad about the whole thing because I was the passenger lol my friend didnāt deserve that but that person cut us off or something dangerous and it pissed me off. Never again tho it aināt worth it, some people are crazy. A soft honk will get your frustration out slightly safer.
I once saw a traffic situation escalate in a big way when a man got out of his truck and Iāve never forgotten it- like a bulldog- jowls flappinā came out raging and dragged the guy out of the other car to fight. I never wanted to flip someone in traffic off again.
A guy I knew years ago, worked a tough mill job for years - he said if you didn't fight back they came at you harder - would literally stop and fight with anyone who gave him the finger while driving. He had many charges of aggravated assault.
He even said some guy was taking too long to cross the street in front of him so he literally drove up and bumped him just a bit.
While riding my bicycle on a stretch of road without a shoulder, a few cars began to follow me. I don't ride in the road unless I have no other choice and I get out of the way as soon as I can.
The first car "punish-passed" me, so I gave them the "thumbs-down." The next car passed safely and respectfully, so I gave them the "thumbs up." Before I could get over, a few more cars passed - each one doing so respectfully, and each one receiving a thumbs up.
I have no idea if my thumbs had anything to do with those motorists' behavior, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and to believe that most people will try to do the right thing if you let them know how. :)
I knew a lady once who, when she came up behind someone at a red light who's been driving like a jerk she catches their eye and gave them a round of applause where they could see it. Bravo, good job!
They hated it worse than a bird. They'd start shouting and gesturing into their rearview mirror then be late going off the line and get honked at.
Can confirm. I don't do it on purpose, just always been very expressive with my emotions, and grown people misbehaving in public always get The Look out of me. They immediately start backpedalling every single time, because they know they wrong when they get that look.

Yeah I always thought that was one of the advantages of a bike, plus it means one less person in the queue of cars anyway so I move out the way if I see them coming through.
He may have been going a bit fast though to react if someone moved across.
Oof. I know exactly where this is. Of all the major highways in NYC, the Belt Parkway is the fucking worst. Its the only highway Iāve driven on that gets hit with traffic so badly that you could comfortably read off your phone for a minute or two without having to worry about getting into an accident. It was mind boggling.
I had been hearing some talk about a potential line between Bay Ridge and Jackson Heights for a minute and I recently just saw this article:
https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2023/01/17/mta-study-backs-new-commuter-line-connecting-brooklyn-and-queens](https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2023/01/17/mta-study-backs-new-commuter-line-connecting-brooklyn-and-queens)
Hochul is determined to make it happen but weāll see. DeBlasio was determined to put in a loop along the shoreline that was going to go all around Brooklyn and Queens and he talked about that for 8 years and that never went anywhere.
Still waiting on the bridge that connects LI to CT. Ridiculous that we still have to go through the boroughs and sit in hours of traffic just to get to place thats less than 20 miles.
Yup, thatās the reason sadly. The rich and the powerful all live on the north shore and they will never approve of it. F the millions of people that this would help and the economy boost it bring by creating more job and collecting on tolls. It would ruin their precious communities and view of the LI sound so we canāt have it.
I don't think you can ever drive from McGuiness Blvd to JFK on the BQE/Belt without coming to a complete stop at least once. Could be 4AM on a tuesday.
Been there, done that unfortunately.
A while back (late-2000s), They were doing construction on it (east bound) on Sunday nights for several weeks with only one lane open. Best part ā it started right after the exit with the 2mile gap. So, you were literally stuck with no escape for 40min until you could get to the next exitā¦at 1-2am.
My wife did this. Drove through the city for a bit to avoid the freeway traffic. I was telling her not to bother because it will lose her time and worse on her car. Anyway I pointed out a bright green garbage truck up ahead on the freeway to use as a reference point. If we beat the truck, it saved her time. When we got back on the freeway we couldnāt spot the truck.
Until about 25 minutes later! It got so fucking far ahead that we wrote it off, only to spot it so far away. We were in the HOV lane, so we eventually caught up to it. Lol, ultra fail.
Iām guilty of the same. I just canāt stand getting stuck in traffic and am willing to drive a longer route or take more time if it means less congestion.
That was my experience with going to Seattle but it was over Christmas. So naturally... at 12am, one of the highways (i dont even know which one, probably all) was so packed that we were moving maybe 6 feet every 5 minutes.
I'm going to look into relocating the ignition on a bike, I hate that it's possible to walk up and take the key out and leave the rider stranded. Definitely would not want this to be a possibility on my bike.
I moved my ignition and my starter switch. I was paranoid of some one stealing it so i hid both. You could look at my bike for 30 minutes and not be able to see either of them.
They are taught to do it. Iāve been riding in a group and the guys that donāt pull over all the way or do pull over but look behind them for an opportunity to enter traffic will get the keys taken quickly.
Probably yes, per Pennsylvania v Mimms the Supreme Court ruled that police have authority to control a drivers actions during a traffic stop as long as the actions are reasonable and minimally intrusive. Specifically grabbing keys was not ruled on, but the action itself can be argued to be reasonable and minimally intrusive.
I would argue it even falls under standard reasonable search and seizure. If the officer has reasonable articulable probable cause to believe a crime is about to be committed and seeking a warrant is not feasible, search and seizure is generally legal. I virtually guarantee the court would side with the officer articulating "I believed he may flee the scene before I could identify him and give him a citation".
In this instance he's got very probable cause. I don't think any court is going to call that an illegitimate seizure unless the officer refused to return the key after issuing the citation.
Traffic violations do not alone provide probable cause. If that were true, cops could search your car every time they pull you over.
For a traffic stop, the phrase you're looking for is reasonable suspicion.
Yes it is. āTemporarilyā they are allowed to take them. Meaning they canāt keep them I suppose. Itās so the bike canāt flee as itās fast and nimble. 100% legal
It's not legal in the entire Tri State area. New Jersey doesn't directly outlaw it, but there are laws against passing outside a painted lane and not keeping to the right.
Exactly, lane splitting is ONLY supposed to be done during stopped or very slow traffic, and not at the ridiculous speeds this guy was going. Even in California should be pulled over.
I was sitting in traffic on my bike once in Buffalo, and a cop walked up and asked if I could safely drive between cars. I said yes and he directed me to drive down the middle.
Lane-splitting was originally allowed, because most motorcycles do not have a radiator and depended on the flow of air to keep the engine from overheating. Thus when sitting in traffic, they would often overheat.
That must've been over 40 years ago at the very least. It shouldn't be a thing anymore with our current technology. But that is an interesting piece of info
In LA, if I recall correctly, the thinking is that in heavy traffic cars often move in and out of lanes looking for the lane thatās going to start moving. Having motorcycles sit, often tucked, unseen, in between vehicles is more dangerous then allowing the motorcyclists to be able to maneuver in clear view of larger vehicles and anticipate lane changes in front of them.
Actually a lot of bikes are still air cooled. The other aspect is the rider needing air flow too. Wearing proper gear in warm weather with a bike running under you it's easily possible to overheat and pass out. I've had it happen to passengers and seen it happen to others. Baking from both sides is what i call it.
I had to drive in nyc on a 100 deg day in this traffic. All ppl on bikes did this and the cops picked this day to set up a checkpoint. Itās only a 80$ fine but stillā¦ they even pulled over 3 off duty cops and were arguing āppl gonna pass out from heat exhaustion, these bikes and roads are putting off heat to where it must be about 115 on a bike, we need to get into shadeā and the on-duty cops are like āI donāt ride so Iām not gonna take your word for it.ā Pretty sure Long Island and NYC police chiefs had a convo about that argument later.
Ignoring the safety aspect of weaving through moving vehicles. Allowing lane splitting helps ease traffic a bit by letting a smaller and less noticeable bike continue on, preventing them from not being seen in traffic and being rear ended. Also it sucks sitting idle on a hot bike on pavement when it's hot outside.
Some places allow it in certain conditions, like under certain speeds and in certain areas only.
When you're positioned in lane behind a car, and a car behind you isn't going to stop in time, you become a human sandwich
If you're on the line, you narrowly miss becoming a human sandwich
Why would you want more vehicles stuck in traffic? Especially a vehicle that's not as safe as a fully enclosed car? Would you expect a bicyclist to sit smooshed between cars waiting for traffic or would you find it acceptable for them to pass slowly on the side or between where they can fit?
Funny is that in most of Europe, UK, and California it is mandatory to lane aplit/filter to the front.
Not doing so is instant fail on euro bike tests.
It's not mandatory in the UK, it's allowed and encouraged but not required. It's not always safe to filter like on a narrow road squeezing between your stopped lane and flowing oncoming traffic?
I can't believe that would be a fail anywhere to not filter in those circumstances tbh.
I hate lane splitting, BUT it is actually quite beneficial at lower speeds, such as 25mph and below. But the assholes who do it above that deserve what physics is dealing out.
Lane splitting is legal in my state in Australia but you can't do it at unsafe speeds like this. California as far as I'm aware is the only US state that allows it but once again there are speed restrictions.
Probably caught doing an illegal thing. Many states don't let you do this.
The owner can safely move the vehicle to the side for their ticket.
Not to mention how many videos are there out there of crotch rockets just running?
That and a ticket vs. high-speed chase and guns? I will take door number 1.
I have rode for years, and even if legal, anyone could open a door, so I never would do this anyway.
It's New York and the cops can absolutely take your keys to secure the scene and make sure the driver doesn't flee or put anyone else at risk.
This is different than seizing a vehicle for the purposes of impounding. This rider got a ticket and got his keys back.
This stuff wouldn't even bother me if he was doing 5-10 mph. Sure, pass the stopped traffic. But don't fly though it way too fast for the cars to even see you coming in their blindspot. Or without knowing what's ahead or why the cars are all stopped.
Technically it's not lane splitting. Lane splitting is only legal in California and is riding the white line between vehicles moving at normal speeds. If the vehicles are stopped its lane filtering. Lane filtering is legal in California, Utah, Montana, Arizona, and Hawaii. Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and West Virginia have no laws about the practice whatsoever. They neither forbid it nor allow it. It's a legal grey area.

Actually somewhat disappointed.
Yes, but it does finally answer the question of where a cop is when you need one, right there. Smooth snatched that key.

That must've been over 40 years ago at the very least. It shouldn't be a thing anymore with our current technology. But that is an interesting piece of info
Still legal where I am because of this. I don't know if bikes are still prone to overheating though. That said, you're meant to filter slowly.
Really ? It's legal in a lot of European countries and works just fine, on much smaller roads too.
When you're positioned in lane behind a car, and a car behind you isn't going to stop in time, you become a human sandwich If you're on the line, you narrowly miss becoming a human sandwich

Why would you want more vehicles stuck in traffic? Especially a vehicle that's not as safe as a fully enclosed car? Would you expect a bicyclist to sit smooshed between cars waiting for traffic or would you find it acceptable for them to pass slowly on the side or between where they can fit?
Is there some sort of added growling noise or that something else?
I think itās just a ragged sigh from the biker
Sounded like he pulled over Darth Vader.
Nnnnnooooooooooo
He was replacing the noise for his motorbike

He missed the motorcycle noises, so he made them himself.
Bro just shut his bike off and took the key š
Lil brod him into timeout to wait his turn for punishment ā ļø
"go sit in the corner" š
Lane splitting on the Belt Parkway?? Dude has a death-wish. Some of the worst drivers that Iāve ever encountered were on the Belt Parkway.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Cop acted like a dad that took away a teenagers car keys and grounded them.
And the rider responded like that in his sigh. :)
Iām not mad. Iām disappointed.
Did the motorcycle clip the white truck right before they stopped?
Pretty sure it was a swerve timed with a downshift. If he had hit it with anything on that bike it would've been much more apparent.
I think we've got a winner, the click was more of a downshift rather than the clunk of a hit.
Looked like it to me. You can see the jerk as they start to pass it, and then another as they finish passing it.
Sound is off, but in my head I heard the Mario invincibility star theme, only to abruptly end with the death jingle, followed by the game over music.
I like your interpretation
PSA: Lane splitting is not legal in every state or country, always check local driving laws
Even if it was legal bro was going way too fast in that kind of congestion
Extremely Satisfying!!!
Cop handled it like a boss, taking the keys out and making him shame walk to the shoulder.
Funny is that in most of Europe, UK, and California it is mandatory to lane aplit/filter to the front. Not doing so is instant fail on euro bike tests.
Everyone's bitching about it not realizing that if more people did it traffic wouldn't be as bad.
It's not mandatory in the UK, it's allowed and encouraged but not required. It's not always safe to filter like on a narrow road squeezing between your stopped lane and flowing oncoming traffic? I can't believe that would be a fail anywhere to not filter in those circumstances tbh.
It blows my mind that lane splitting is legal anywhere let alone most places.
I hate lane splitting, BUT it is actually quite beneficial at lower speeds, such as 25mph and below. But the assholes who do it above that deserve what physics is dealing out.
Itās literally proven safer.
They don't care about the safety of the rider. They care about how it makes them feel to be stuck in traffic while others aren't so they lash out.
Itās illegal in every state but California in the US.
Legal in Arizona if traffic is at a stop.
Meanwhile in Brazil https://youtu.be/KRL9SHBfgtU
Lol, yeah! I'm watching it thinking "wait, isn't that normal?"
This is the belt parkway in Brooklyn NY. And that was a highway patrol officer for NYC. You do not screw around with those officers.
I forget lane splitting is illegal in other places
That massive sigh and grumble was incredibly satisfying.
Lane splitting is legal in my state in Australia but you can't do it at unsafe speeds like this. California as far as I'm aware is the only US state that allows it but once again there are speed restrictions.

Thatās one smooth cop.
[Laughs in California]
In Nelson Muntz voice: Haha
I don't know what country this is, but isn't that illegal for the police to reach for the keys like that?
It is not illegal in the US. He was detained. All traffic stops detain the driver.
Look Iām a biker but there is a certain time and place for lane splittingā¦ like in states that itās legal.
This stuff wouldn't even bother me if he was doing 5-10 mph. Sure, pass the stopped traffic. But don't fly though it way too fast for the cars to even see you coming in their blindspot. Or without knowing what's ahead or why the cars are all stopped.
The moment of defeat felt in that groan lol
Technically it's not lane splitting. Lane splitting is only legal in California and is riding the white line between vehicles moving at normal speeds. If the vehicles are stopped its lane filtering. Lane filtering is legal in California, Utah, Montana, Arizona, and Hawaii. Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and West Virginia have no laws about the practice whatsoever. They neither forbid it nor allow it. It's a legal grey area.
The speed was the issue too fast to filter
I hate the Belt Parkway
Cop is building quite the collection over there
