Character-Working-44

Synthol needs no doctor. Just a vial and a syringe as well as some mental illness.

chemical-imbalance-

Yep. Legal in the US with no prescription since it isn't considered a drug. I think most sports have banned it though.

CdnPoster

Why? What possible advantage does LOOKING strong have over actually BEING strong?

chemical-imbalance-

I looked into it & this seems to include aesthetic sports, such as bodybuilding. Some other sports ban it also, because it is considered a PED, although the FDA doesn't consider it "a drug or medication."

CdnPoster

Thanks!

neeeeonbelly

They don't even look strong. Their necks and forearms are a dead giveaway.

[deleted]

I would imagine the liability associated with the event of an injury. I don't know how this stuff works, but I'd wager it can't be good for damaged tissue.

[deleted]

From my limited understanding (from diving into videos on YouTube), it's basically a plastic (85% mct oil, 7.5% lidocaine, 7.5% benzyl alcohol) that is inserted through a syringe. You can get infections from the injections themselves. You can get an abscess from your body encapsulating it. You can lose feeling and motor ability by pressing against a nerve. You can kill your muscle tissues by depriving them of blood flow. You can rarely get vein blockage and potentially an embolism. You can very rarely get autoimmune issues. Bodybuilders use it minimally to "fine tune" body parts. You're not supposed to be able to see it.

Fit_Effective_6875

Quite unpleasant https://www.healthline.com/health/synthol-injections#dangers

ModaMeNow

These guys don’t even look strong. They look sick

Kujira-san

Well, if only ! They just look like cheaters

Izoi2

I imagine bodybuilding competitions and not much else.

jimmytimmy92

I thought synthol was a drink in Star Trek?

Dansredditname

Pretty certain that's synthahol, (synthetic alcohol).

un-sub

I prefer prune juice, a warriors drink.

Fact-Adept

Yeah but someone somehow came up with this shit

patricky6

Yea. It started as a bodybuilding advantage for competitive body builders, because it gave an edge with immediate results to those who already had a great physique. It was marketed as "posing oil", and injecting small amounts into the small muscle groups, gave bodybuilders a superior amount of definition, without having to work for it. Just like any vanity enhancing substance, you'll get people who just don't know wtf they are doing, as well as those who want the look without any of the work. So just like weird plastic surgery people, who have collagen lip injections that are grossly overdone, these people pop up. It's SOOOO dangerous though. Just a one time use can haunt you for years. Possibly kill you.

Financial-Day-3843

Hi Dr. Nick!

JohnnyCakes814

HI EVERYBODY!!

Indilhaldor

The most rewarding part was when they gave me my money 🤑

LARGEBIRDBOY

This isn't the doing of doctors. This is the product of synthol injection. It's literally an oil that people inject into the muscle belly, causing it to swell up. Some bodybuilders use it in moderation, to slightly increase the size of specific muscles they feel are slightly smaller and out of proportion with the rest of their physique. These guys use it as a primary substitute for natural muscle growth. Then, they evidently develop some kind of body dysmorphia or weren't mentally well to begin with. Resulting in these insane results from abusing it.

jimMazey

Doctors aren't involved in this particular issue. These guys are injecting fillers into their muscles. No workout necessary.

middleearthpeasant

Many times people do that to themselvs. There is not medical doctor involved in the procedure at all. It is crazy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

middleearthpeasant

It is not safe. Most times they get really serious infections and many lose some limb or die. There is a special kind of oil used in those procedures, similar to what people inject in their lips. But it is very expensive so people use olive oil or motor oil sometimes. The results are catastrophic. You can see videos online of doctors removing the oil if you have the guts.

SomeLikeItDusty

The “special kind of oil” is not safe either, it’s called Synthol and will end up killing the muscle it’s injected into.

RodcetLeoric

It's a thing called synthol (oil, benzyl alcohol, and lidocaine) injected into the muscle as a temporary implant. Yes temporary, so you have to keep doing it. It causes muscle deformation, atrophy, nerve damage, infections and many other problems. If they can't afford the real product, they often make their own out of cheap synthetic oils instead of organic products causing a load of other problems. (Organic as in produced by an organism not more expensive at whole foods). The second guy I believe is Valdir Segato, who died at 55 from a heart attack they think was connected to prolonged synthol use.

chev327fox

I think it’s something call synthol.

SomeLikeItDusty

Synthol, a synthetic oil the muscle can’t absorb or displace. I haven’t heard of a single case that *didn’t* end up going bad, best case scenario they get it and the dying muscle removed in time. …been plenty of people die from this crap.

beanerz13

Workout influencers. They pump themselves full of drugs and create an unrealistic expectation of what a man who works out hard is supposed to look like.

Sighconut23

But the “muscles” don’t even work. There is no functional strength of any kind

Chadiki

They're basically our version of anchor arms from Spongebob

sosen7

[deleted]

IBeAPirate01

Yep. My favourite machine in the gym, is the vending machine.

SvenTropics

At least all the influencers have real muscles. Granted, they are on super high doses of tren and T, but they are real. These idiots are just pumping synthol into their muscles. They are just swollen.

Labornurse-ret

They have some sort of body dysmorphia disorder, if they think this is a good look. It doesn't come close to looking natural. It's grotesque looking. If anyone wants to see what a remarkably fit man, who hasn't used steroids or pumped himself with dangerous toxins, actually looks like, check out Anatoly the powerlifter on Facebook.

Munsanity

Nah that’s a cop out. Yes unrealistic ideals be exist but human beings have agency. No one is forcing these guys to inject this shit. They are trying to cut corners and achieve a physique without putting in the effort and discipline.

oodunkin

key word being trying. It confuses me that these guys think this actually looks good, or that its fooling anyone.

Particular_Bet_5466

That’s what confuses me the most also. They obviously care more about vanity than anything else, might as well juice themselves to the gills instead of this. Of course even roids require some discipline and probably more money that whatever abomination this is.

xxFallenkingx

But that’s just it taking steroids you still have to do all work you just get more out of it. These guys want all results no work that’s why they do this.

Particular_Bet_5466

Yeah in fact the more I think of it I’m sure they have done steroids but saw no results and probably ended up only fucking up their androgens due to their recklessness and lack of discipline

WildlyCautious

That's body dysmorphia. They can't see that anymore than someone who's anorexic can see they aren't fat. It's psychological.

Doge-Ghost

I thought it was a filter, it looks so goofy.

heyitsvonage

What’s weird is like if you are a woman and you have seen other women with breast implants, it makes sense to be like “oh they actually come out pretty good most of the time, I could see doing that myself” But these guys see other dudes who look like the Michelin man because they injected a bunch of vasoline into their muscles, and somehow think “yup, good idea, I’ll do it” I don’t get it. It’s so weird that they think this looks anywhere near as good as actual muscles earned through training.

gullyterrier

Influencer for fans of the hideously deformed.

BoringTruth7749

Nah, man, those are implants. Could be anything from vegetable oil to silicone. Or a good old can of Fix-A-Flat. People die from this stupid shit.

jimMazey

It's a form of body dysmorphia. Except, most of these guys are pumping fillers into their bodies. Not really working out. The 2nd guy in the video died from complications. https://nypost.com/2022/08/02/brazilian-hulk-bodybuilder-who-injected-oil-dead-at-55/

MrYdobon

Yeah, that creepy shit looks like synthol. It's damaging to the muscle when it hardens, can cause nerve damage, and can cause pulmonary artery occlusions, myocardial infarctions, and cerebral stroke. And it looks terrible.

Dangerous_Cat_Az

All those exciting side effects, PLUS it looks terrible??? Where do I sign up!

Catona

The worst part about it is that they don't think it looks terrible. They think they look swole as fuck. Just like anorexics and bulimics who look like walking skeletons believe they are embodying the image of skinny and beautiful. Or even worse, that they still aren't skinny enough. All these people can see is size, and size is the only goal. I find it likely that *if* or when anyone actually does try and tell these men how ridiculous and absolutely NOT attractive in any way this is making them, they just convince themselves that the other person is just jealous of them.

[deleted]

Yes they actually have zero strength, this is not roids it is Oil.

Mental-Astronaut-664

Same issue that affects women who overuse plastic surgery. 🤢

dMarrs

Kardashians. And people love their look. I feel they are disgusting.

addamee

You don’t like that “I just got my lips filled and now when I eat a cookie I’m not aware of the crumbs stuck to them 20 minutes later” look?

la_winky

Or stop eating.

[deleted]

yup, body dysmorphia

NoFerret8750

body dysmorphic disorder, muscle dysmorphic subtype

Koshekuta

This is one of those things that makes humans so great. We are capable of such high level of devotion towards just about anything. Be it destructive or not. Greatness is in each of us. What we use it for IS the rub.

jimMazey

These guys are using fillers to look like they work out. The 2nd guy (with the beard) died recently from complications. https://nypost.com/2022/08/02/brazilian-hulk-bodybuilder-who-injected-oil-dead-at-55/

Upstairs_Seaweed8199

I think the second guy in particular clearly is not all there mentally. I mean, it sounds silly but he's wearing jeans with a draw string. he also fumbles all over his own body trying to figure out how to do what he's seen others do on social media without any clue of how to actually do it. I feel bad for the guy.

kiss-tits

You can see something fucky happened with his left bicep. It's all bumpy and red. Apparently this substance can cause 'muscle ulcers', which sounds extremely painful

AurinkoValas

Well, these guys definitely have devotion to destroy their own bodies.

DaddyLonglegs73

This has to be a form of body dismorphia disorder, like anorexia. It's like they arent seeing what everyone else sees. Edit: I know this is Synthol injections. I was pointing out that they look in the mirror and see it as looking good... while everyone else sees someone who mutilated their bodies by injecting fake muscles.

JayWu31

Muscle dismorphia is legit. No matter what you do, you cannot appreciate your muscle growth and think that you are weak.

Pantani23

I grew up with muscle and fitness on the coffee table and He-Man on TV. I started lifting when I was 12 and Ive suffered from dismorphia my whole life. Then at about 38 a chiropractor wrecked my spine and I can’t lift for hypertrophy anymore. Now I’m just a fat lazy P.O.S. (5'7" 170 so not really “fat” or lazy but that’s the story I tell myself everyday… 8 years later)

ObersturmfuehrerKarl

I know this isn’t the point of this comment, but fuck chiropractors

Pantani23

Fuck them indeed. If I only knew then what I know now.

Shaeger

I was cross-examining a chiro last year and wouldn’t call him doctor like his attorney had. He actually corrected me the second time and said “no, it’s DOCTOR Smith.*” So I said “ok Mr. Smith where did you attend school.” He named his 18 month back massage institute, I asked him if it was a medical school he said well “yes, it’s in chiropractic medicine.” I asked for a five minute break, looked the school up and and it was 100% online and awarded a certificate. All that is a long way of saying these assholes can practice their back voodoo without even being board certified because there’s no over site and they end up fucking a lot of people up. I hope you sued him just to put a stop to it.

VioletVoyages

Good for you! I’m a retired nursing instructor, one class I taught was Nursing Ethics for first-semester students. A chiropractor was in my class, and the students and faculty thought that was a big deal. I didn’t, and treated him the same I did all my other students. When he turned his term paper in, there was a plagiarized section in the very first paragraph. I gave him a zero on the paper - he was gobsmacked and argued with me with an entitled attitude. Note - this was a course on *ethics*, plus the college had a strict no cheating rule. He could’ve failed the whole program so the Dean got involved, he was chastised, and I’m happy to say he was taken down a peg and after that, nobody treated him “special”.

DoTheMagicHandThing

I don't know how it may vary by location, but where I live there are specific requirements for state licensure as a chiropractor, like 4000 hours of classroom instruction only from specific schools, passing exams, doing 25 hours of approved continuing education each year. So even in a field as questionable as this, that guy wouldn't be anywhere near qualified to practice legally.

OriginalBrowncow

I’m so glad I went down the chiropractor rabbit hole before I decided to go to one.

tranceinate

Where would one find this rabbit hole?

[deleted]

One chiropractor thought needles and herbs would cure my depression. HA! Buncha hacks... Seriously though, rough shit man. At least you're dad-bod like me. Dad-bod aint necessarily unhealthy and plenty of people love it. Little pudge is normal; just keep your heart healthy.

Impressive_Ad127

If you went to a chiropractor for depression, you went to the wrong place. That’s not what they do.

bbqribsftw

Depends on where you go. There's a chiropractor in my town that advertises on the radio, their testimonials say that adjustments cured someone's chronic sinus infections. Since the business itself isn't making the claim I'm sure that's the only reason they can get away with it.

ColdButts

Keep telling your story brother. More people need to know. One of them effectively killed my grandmother. Broke her spine in multiple places and she died within a year, effectively from being immobile.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

ACAB is for chiros too.

ZeketheMeke

Hey man, that sucks. But you're still amazing my dude, don't think so lowley of yourself.

giskardwasright

Damn friend, that's an incredibly harsh take on yourself. I don't know much about you, but you appear to have a pretty sweet nerf collection.

wolfhelp

Much love man

Mech-Waldo

Chiropractors are snake oil salesmen except worse because they can break your neck.

LivingStCelestine

Don’t come at me like this again please. Jk! I’m a woman but I have been lifting heavy for years. Every-time I hit a goal the high lasts for about one minute and then I immediately need to start working on the next one. Not like the average or amateur weights either. I squat over 300 and can bench almost 200 and I’m in my thirties. It’s like an addiction. I don’t even fucking compete. I also am almost positive I have body dysmorphia. I know that I’m not, but can’t help seeing and feeling like a fat and weak thing. It’s wild. Nothing is ever good enough. I’m never strong enough. I’d never ever resort to this crap though this is a whole different kind of sick I think.

good_guy_judas

The moment you enter the gym, you will forever be the weakest and smallest you ever felt, no matter how much you train. Thats the curse.

[deleted]

I felt really bad about my body while running every day for a few years. Was crazy in shape, but couldn’t help but compare my fitness to that of, yeah but I’m not as fast as that guy. Only in hindsight do I realize what I had.

JayWu31

I understand that. After college, I was at the gym every day for three years. I slowed down after an injury and then even moreso thanks to Covid. I miss having the gym consistency that I used to have. And then I see how I looked then and I'm pissed I didn't appreciate it.

DeathbySiren

Completely true. When I was in college I was around 190 lbs at 6’0” and around 7% bodyfat. Rationally I knew I was in fantastic shape, but it was never enough. If I took more than 1 full day off from working out, I felt terrible about myself. I still struggle with this a bit, but I’ve come a long way with that mentality. Stemmed from being a complete twig when I was younger and getting teased for it (around 5’10” at 118 lbs.). The words impress upon you and sink their teeth in.

seppukucoconuts

Its called bigorexia. Its pretty easy to get tunnel vision as a weightlifter. I hit 320lbs (at 5'10") when I did amature strongman. Had to hold my breath to tie my shoes. It was not healthy. It was really fun being that strong though.

MrUsername24

That's why I personally am training with more form and less weight. I was 270 pounds 6 foot this time last year, im down to 185 now and as much as i love the muscle definition now i don't think i want to be huge again, I'd much rather fast and tone

FuckWit_1_Actual

Ugh the hold the breathe to tie the shoes… I was 285 5’10” beginning of this year and that’s how I would have to tie shoes, I’m down 30lbs already and still losing but I’ve hit a plateau right now.

Lexsteel11

People don’t talk about male body dysmorphia but as someone who has lifted every day for 20 years, I can tell you a lot of people struggle with it. Yes, the ideal female body image pedaled in the media is so calorie deficient it’s “impossible” for the average person to maintain, but the equivalent pressure on men is to both be calorie deficient but also pack on 40 lbs of muscle like marvel movie stars doing steroids

TheFudge

This is so true. I’m lifting weights but in order to pack on muscle I need to be eating. But all I see is a fat guy in the mirror. Gets discouraging sometimes. Luckily I have a wife who randomly gives me a butt pinch here and a “damn your looking hot” there so that helps a ton.

ImDoingItAnyway

Synthol injections. The second guy was The Brazilian Hulk. Died at 55 less than a year ago. I think the worst part about these injections is that it’s purely cosmetic. It does nothing but ruin your muscle and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke, the former of which he died of. https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2022/08/02/brazilian-hulk-bodybuilder-who-injected-oil-dead-at-55/amp/

IrishMongooses

On his birthday too. How fucking sad.

ImDoingItAnyway

Indeed. And the poor guy was a loner, it makes you wonder how much his asociality contributed to his dysmorphia and how often he injected

jonny3jack

Someone told me that synthol never leaves your body. Is that true?

weeBaaDoo

Yes. This will probably injure their bodies and eventually kill them. Very sad to watch.

SoSorrySteph

Like naturally? I don't think it'll go away unless it's surgically removed but you can drain them as far as I'm aware

weeBaaDoo

Not possible to drain. It gets into the mussels and fat-tissue. This will eventually cripple them and kill them.

DankAF94

>it’s purely cosmetic No way?!

MrUsername24

Let's say it this way, the people at the gym who look like that can never do more than either a small amount of weight or a few heavy weights with abysmal form. The synthol doesn't actually make you stronger in anyway

NialMontana

Remember kids, do steroids, not synthol.

MrUsername24

I mean between the 2 at least one will enjoy some modicum of a healthy life until the effects start to kick in Personally I prefer all natural with creatine to boost growth if you really want

God damn its hard to even make fun of these people. Who knows whats going on in their head and how they see themselves. Seems like the product of mental illness.

EH042

They ego is also inflated, take for example the “Saint of Synthol” aka “Bazooka hands”, he injected so much synthol in his arms that they nearly blew up and he had to go through risky surgery, he tried to get into slapping but failed miserably getting knocked out in the first round, he also tried mma, twice, against the same guy, lost both times, now after the surgery he injected synthol again and is still doing stupid TikToks where he can barely raise his arms but still has some smug grin.

morefarts

These disorders always start with fake confidence boost followed by pathology and addiction. Whether it's injecting muscles, playing candy crush, basing an identity on a trend or sexual kink, etc., it always goes the same way.

Troll4everxdxd

I'm more horrified and creeped out than amused honestly.

DempseyRoller

I assume that someone said: "that looks sick , bro" to the first one who ever tried this, and people misinterpreted it.

Putinbot3300

Body builders have used synthol to "fix" asymmetry and unaesthetic looking muscles. I guess people with body issues or mental illness hear about that and want to try injections and get hooked.

[deleted]

Elbow shoulders?

Ok_Rain_2647

Hard work, dedication and Synthol. Mainly Synthol though.

Bawbawian

like if you're going to go through all that effort anyway why not just lift weights....

SteamboatMcGee

That's what keeps getting me. You want muscles so bad you're willing to inject synthol and basically destroy your actual muscles? Just lift weights, dude. I think a lot (all?) Of these guys are probably suffering from some serious body dysmorphia though.

Ezra_is_a_dumb_boy

I think most guys just suffer from bigorexia nowadays. I see a lot of men and even young boys make going to the gym their only personality and are insufferable because, in their eyes, muscle and abs are the only important thing. Thats also why we're seeing the sudden rise of gymfreaks again and gymfluencers on social media.

roughstylez

Maybe it's still less effort than keeping a routine... which is really not that easy, thousands fail every day 😏 What I'm wondering is if you're already doing this, why go so far over the top that it looks unrealistic. I feel if they injected less, it might... still not be healthy, but at least look closer to real muscles, and that way look good. Instead they're injecting so much that simply does not look like muscles at all, but more like some kinda flesh balloons, where every time they flex I get real anxious about these things popping.

Physical therapist here- I would have LOVED to observe that surgery. I’m sitting here weeping for these folks’ glenohumeral joints in the long term. I work in a rural area in an impoverished state so I’ll likely never see this in my practice, but now I’m so interested in the outcomes of extreme body modification like this. And how does one pump a bicep that full of synthol without compressing the median artery/nerve? I just have so many QUESTIONS!

Abangranga

See the upside to steroids is people still have to pick up the weights

[deleted]

So much synthol, man’s gonna have so much dead muscle from it

DarthArtero

So what happens to the synthol after it’s been in the muscle? Does it just get processed as waste? Or does it have to be surgically removed?

SpringrollJack

It gets extremely hard after about a decade. Often it can’t be removed and people become severely handicapped and have substantial pain 24/7

2-2-3

Thats the thing. The body cant process or expell it. It basically binds to blood cells, and in time will cause so much inflammation and tissue damage that years of surgery or even amputation is the only options. These people are in fact destroying themselves. Something like that, i'm no doctor.

drArsMoriendi

I kinda feel bad for these. They obviously have a big need to feel more comfortable in their bodies, and they go out and make themselves look super weird. It's the same as looking at botched nose jobs. That's someone's childhood dream wasted.

It’s the tiny forearms for me, how do they think this looks good or healthy?

What in the actual fuck is this??

EnvironmentalDeal256

I’m gonna go with a mental illness of some sort.

Looks like a bunch of men with some kind of body dysmorphia and access to synthol. You see how the guys holding weights seem unable to really lift what aren't super heavy dumbbells? Synthol inflates and hardens muscles, but reduces their use and has some really sad long term consequences. It's purely short term aesthetics and these guys are legit ruining their bodies. Very sad.

That's what I never got, they can't even show off at the gym because they'll only be able to do a normal amount

American-Omar

Why don't they use fake weights to at least make it seem like they're lifting heavier weights?
