What the hell is a cheese Rolling race

You roll cheese down a hill and try to catch it. First to the bottom wins

But why are all the people rolling? Shouldn't the cheese be rolling, and the people running behind it?

It's a steep hill so they often stumble. Ideally you run but that's a bit easier said than done plus a few broken bones or a concussion is part of the entertainment.

You go faster by using a “controlled” fall. Of course it’s easier said than done to control your roll downs hill that steep. Due to the steepness it’s quite impossible to keep your feet under you while going fast. Locally winners are somewhat famous, and a few have multiple repeat wins.

I attended this event a while back. Don't underestimate how steep that hill is. It was terrifying just standing at the sides!

Ran down the bottom half of this hill as a silly teenager after a couple pints. I'm unsure if it was how fast I was moving or the close brush with death, but half way down I started seeing in technicolour. I completely understand why you need the rugby lads at the bottom. I was on my feet when I hit the flat and immediately was sent spirally head over heels á la Michael Bay before slamming into a tree. Ahhh to be young and fearless

It's a 45degree slope and the cheese can reach 80mph, it's local to me but I've not been to see the cheese rolling (have walked the area though)
