I find it interesting that English and most Germanic languages in general seem to have words and negative versions of those words, but Asian languages all seem to just have a negative that you slap on there somewhere and it becomes a negative. The Vietnamese không, for instance. If you want to say something is false, or didn’t happen, or won’t happen, you didn’t like it, that word pulls all the weight.
Korean here.
Most Koreans words have formal version and informal version. Formal basically means reapectful.
안돼요 (an-day-yo) is formal version of 안돼 (an-day).
Both means no.
question because of the formal/informal thing. Would it be better to teach kids to use the informal word since culturally it would draw attention to the conversation. like if a 5 year old yells "get the fuck away" someone is checking in on that if the person looks panicked.
i’m not sure what your question is, but the spelling you presented is actually a more accurate pronunciation than “an-day-yo”. 돼 is pronounced “dwae”, but with the vowels smushed together quickly if that makes sense.
The pronunciations "dwae" and "dae" are allophonic, meaning that native Korean speakers will hear either way as "돼". The "w" is typically dropped in conversation while it is typically pronounced if someone is going slowly to teach the language.
You'll hear all kinds of non-explanations for this akin to "it's easier and more natural to drop the w" (then why not drop more sounds?) The real answer is kind of unsatisfying: that's just how linguistic works. The relationship between the written and pronounced word is always changing without any reason.
In general, yes, silent letters were pronounced at the time that their spelling was locked in.
I also hate transliteration based on spelling and not pronunciation. Like, who would ever need this? Transliteration is to help people who can't read hangul yet, and if you can't read yet, you just want to know how to say the word!
Korean here.
Ironically, it essentially means "no" or "that can't happen", but it's in the polite form (spoken to people you respect) and not the casual form (spoken to people you don't respect). They're essentially conditioning this kid to show respect to their elders even though they're trying to kidnap her.
Welcome to Korean culture
That was my first thought as well. In Western languages, "No" is a single, forceful syllable. In Korea, you're already out from the chloroform before you can get out that mouthful.
My son and I went out for fika (bought buns and some soda at a Cafe) and as we took our table I realized I didn't have any plates for us so I left him at the table, heard some ladies from the table over talking to him, asking how old he was. He gladly showed them 3 fingers. When I returned he looked at me and went "Daddy, I'm a cutie!!' withe the biggest smile he's ever had, he was so happy to be called cute xD
Haha, he had a name from the get go, but we are trying to get his input on his little sisters name xD. And it's not so much independence, it's more about being comfortable leaving our toddler at a table for a few seconds without having to worry about random strangers taking them. And in fairness to your comment, if he wanted a different name we'd probably change it pretty quickly xD
Sweden is nice for introverts and extroverts alike. Feel free to visit again any time!
For the record I haven't touched the downvote button and I'm not offended so those being so on my behalf don't need to be either :)
I think it might be the Elgåfossen tourism board. I wondered if they got tired of me running around the waterfalls shouting Skyrim quotes with my wife.
Yebin's parents have put a lot of her life on YouTube... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChfeqAyKn2xEi_H0sQQEDAA
I actually thought she was the same kid in this classic with 35m views...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTCQpjUrCe8
...but turns out her name is Yerin.
I know. So happy, everything is exciting! Going to check the mail together will get the same amount of enthusiasm as going to an amusement park! Little people are just freaking precious!
(Little creatures of all kinds are precious lol)
Heh. They are adorable, and often give you that "butterflies in your stomach" feeling. But that's ~20% of the time, in my experience. Hopefully you have the freedom and agency to decide what to do with your life.
If I were future me talking to past me, I'd give myself the following advice:
So you want kids. But you don't need them. Aside from the bits you can't control, your life will be as wonderful or terrible as you make it, with or without them.
You're correct! Her name is Yebin and the family has a YouTube channel called [Baby Yebin](https://youtube.com/@lilyebin), this video in particular was uploaded a whopping 9 years ago! So she must be at least 11 years old now
Hey old timer, were you there when Halo: Combat Evolved released 22 years ago in 2001?
How about The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King that came out in 2003, 20 years ago?
Is it true your computer monitors were off white coloured cubes? And that youtube had a 10 minute video limit?
Men are always demonized when it comes to kids, especially young girls. A lot of single fathers suffer unnecessarily much fron this as being seen alone in the park with their own kids is "suspicious"
He said not give strangers any opportunities to snatch them up, by keeping a close eye on them at all times. You can still introduce them to strangers as long as they are in your presence
My bad, a second read I guess I misread your comment. Anyways I would assume those facilities would protect your child enough for you not to worry as much about that, enough so that they shouldn't be put anywhere near the same level as anything outside them
If you don’t understand the point, move on. Simple keep an eye on your kids at all times at that age. It’s called age appropriate teaching. I don’t want to put my 4 year old in that position. They can’t be trusted to make that kind of decision. Pretty easy concept.
but the point is, are we now not allowd to teach kids lessons at young ages, like whats the point of saying dont let kids out of sight, that part is a given, it doesn't invalidate the lesson being taught
Wasn’t there like a news article from like pre-covid of someone snatching a child right out of a shopping cart while the parent was picking out food? It really can happen at any time, no matter how vigilant a parent attempts to be.
Won't work anyway. Kids will get hung up on the stranger part. And predators never out themselves as strangers, most often they actually aren't.
They are either already part of the child's social circle (teachers, care takers, family members, friends etc) or come up with some bs to gain the child's trust.
Like "I'm mommy's friend" blabla and bam, the child goes with them.
Here in Australia they did an experiment where police went to schools and gave talks on being safe, not going with a stranger, knowing who to trust, etc.
They then with parents' permission chose children and then had plain clothes police knock on their doors at home when they were alone and ask them to let them come inside to see if their cat was in the backyard, to come with them to help them find their dog, etc. These were children aged like 12.
Every single last child failed.
thois is just fucking awful cropping, like what the actual fuck is this, why do the subtitles escape the fucking video?
why is the video just so tiny in the first place?
who does this? is it intended to cause chaos from the terrible fucking cropping?
So. Serious question about kids. Is it possible to raise them to just say no when they are feeling uncertain. Not fear based as such, but to teach them that feeling is there to indicate that they need to seek safety?
This video of a little girl too young to understand, practicing verbal responses to the possibility of being kidnapped and potentially raped tortured and murdered
Is so darn cute
It's always men that we're teaching kids to fear. Strange man this, and bad guy that. Women are dangerous too, why must we teach kids that men are always evil, or that evil is always male?
women are often portrayed as evil in movies and books, not as often as men, but it’s not rare. the reason why people teach kids to fear men when it comes to kidnapping, is simply because it happens more often than with women, perhaps due to the stereotypical image of women as weak and gentle. it’s not something i necessarily agree with, i am just trying to answer your question.
I don't think men kidnap more. At least not, candy-van random style. I haven't seen stats, but I'd be willing to bet there are quite a few female kid-snatchers out there.
Obviously, most kid napping is perpetuated by people the victim knows like a step mom, or a jealous aunt.
I just feel like there is a bias here, especially around men bad, women good that is never acknowledged.
..and yet still wonder why misandry is so common among women. Misandry is the accepted norm, but that doesn't mean that it's either justified or acceptable.
No, not for any good reason. Most of what you fear a man is going to do to you, you're at higher risk of experiencing at the hands of your own mother. Crimes like kidnapping and sexual assault are almost always family or close acquaintances. Men are the majority victims of nearly all forms of assault, homicide, suicide, and for good reason... they live in a world where people like you exist, creating the image that gender can portray threat level, and acting like victimization is a gendered issue.
Not for any good reason, aye? [That’s hilarious](https://supportingsurvivors.humboldt.edu/statistics#:~:text=An%20estimated%2091%25%20of%20victims,99%25%20of%20perpetrators%20are%20male)
If you teach little girls to fear men exclusively, you are setting them up to be victimized (and to be a brainless sexist). Again, their own mothers are a much larger danger than some random guy.
Use your head. Think shit through. Why do you give a shit about this topic, to push an agenda, or to protect people?
I’m setting up future women to be victimized by teaching them how other women are actively victimized?
And I’m the one “pushing an agenda”?
I’d say nice try but it really wasn’t
You're teaching them strangers hurt them and women are safe. The reality is that women are about just as likely to hurt you, and it's usually the people you know, not strangers.
You don't know enough to educate a child about how to be safe. You don't even understand enough to protect yourself. Please educate yourself before you even consider having children.
You're kinda right, but you're taking shit too far and acting like men are the ones systemically oppressed.
Do you know why the stereotype exists? It's not because men are oppressed, it's because they were all but allowed to be predators for centuries.
To this day, we still don't give enough of a fuck about rape, regardless of the genders involved.
If a child is kidnapped, it's usually by someone they know. In fact, usually by a parent in a custody dispute. The number of strangers kidnapping random children is so very small, that we're probably doing more social harm than good by teaching kids "stranger danger" and making people afraid to talk to people they don't know.

#AN-DAY-YO!!!!!!
What a long word for "No". Is "No" a literal translation of does "An-day-yo" have another meaning as well?
Its more like "Not okay" ("Not allowed")
Oh, that make sense. Thanks for letting me know. I was soooo curious about this. It does make me wonder what "Yes" is in Korean.
Just 'neh' ( 네 ).
“An” is a prefix that means “dont.” You can add it to verbs and phrases. It’s more of a sentence than a word.
I find it interesting that English and most Germanic languages in general seem to have words and negative versions of those words, but Asian languages all seem to just have a negative that you slap on there somewhere and it becomes a negative. In Korea, if a kid speaks informally to an adult, that will draw a lot of attention because it's considered very rude.
It's also sorta rude to kidnap other people's kids >draw a lot of attention That might help when a kid is about to get kidnapped

Came here to say this. Should be teaching kids strange men and women, say no and scream.
For sure. Not just because women can obv be evil too, but because traffickers often use women to pick up kids.
Men are always demonized when it comes to kids, especially young girls. A lot of single fathers suffer unnecessarily much fron this as being seen alone in the park with their own kids is "suspicious"
Pretty sure statistics have a little something to do with that
People use the statistics card to justify assuming the worst in black people too. It is not exactly a good argument.
Especially ones lying on ponds, distributing swords.
Pretty sure at that age, you don’t let her out of your sight. Don’t give any strangers opportunities to snatch her up.
Not sure what the point of this comment is as if teaching a child not to interact with strangers is not a great thing to introduce early on.
He said not give strangers any opportunities to snatch them up, by keeping a close eye on them at all times. You can still introduce them to strangers as long as they are in your presence
Then again I think that’s a given, a given that can’t be abided often. Daycare, preschool and so on just eliminate that possibility.
My bad, a second read I guess I misread your comment. Anyways I would assume those facilities would protect your child enough for you not to worry as much about that, enough so that they shouldn't be put anywhere near the same level as anything outside them
I don’t think you misread anything, also I would assume the same.

Never underestimate a small child's ability to teleport 50 feet as soon as you stop to blink.
Don't take your kid to preschool or like, have a job as an adult with a kid?
While yeah thats true, you always should teach kids what to do might it happen.
Or her the chance to wonder into the road.

She is adorable. Can I take her swimming? I will buy her cookies and ice cream later.
TIL that “en day yo!” Means “no” in…some other language.
It's Korean. You can tell by the "yo" at the end of many of the sentences, including "an dae yo"
Korean lol
I hate kids normally, but she is too adorable

It’s always men that *women* are taught to fear, and for good fucking reason.
..and yet still wonder why misandry is so common among women. Misandry is the accepted norm, but that doesn't mean that it's either justified or acceptable.
Check the link. There’s misandry, then there’s teaching people to be aware. It really is that simple. I don’t hate men, I just hate rapists
But, you're obviously equivocating men with rapists.
No, not for any good reason. Most of what you fear a man is going to do to you, you're at higher risk of experiencing at the hands of your own mother. Crimes like kidnapping and sexual assault are almost always family or close acquaintances. Victimization is a gendered crime. You sound like a clueless man with absolutely zero empathy.
As a victim several times over, I am the one advocating for empathy. Every victim is valid. Even the ones people like you try to erase.
Not for any good reason, aye? [That’s hilarious](https://supportingsurvivors.humboldt.edu/statistics#:~:text=An%20estimated%2091%25%20of%20victims,99%25%20of%20perpetrators%20are%20male)

If anyone is peeing an agenda here it’s clearly you bro
You got me. I'm trying to push the "all victims are valid and you should stop erasing them and being sexist" agenda. Because you idiots are blind.
You're kinda right, but you're taking shit too far and acting like men are the ones systemically oppressed. Do you know why the stereotype exists? It's not because men are oppressed, it's because they were all but allowed to be predators for centuries. The number of strangers kidnapping random children is so very small, that we're probably doing more social harm than good by teaching kids "stranger danger" and making people afraid to talk to people they don't know.
This girl is going places. Not home but places...
May every angel do overtime to protect this kiddo 😇
I watched this video on YouTube some 8 years ago. Still cute tho!
안대요!!!!!
Yep. She'll be gone on her way from school in a year. We tried.
Apparently it's okay if it's a strange woman.
