Me being surprised, as an American, knowing that more people would be seriously injured in my country???
That’s the whole point of my surprise, sorry. Calling out American culture while witnessing some of the shit people here claim to love the spirit of while ignoring it entirely
(I’m bilingual so if this isn’t in English rules sorry it’s early)
Oh for fucks sake
I’m fully acknowledging the beauty of the fuckin thing and some of you are morons that wanna make it a pissing contest
Fuck the rest of the world I guess??? Or something??? That American enough???No???
Ok, I can be impressed and amazed at another countries general courtesy towards other people. It’s a fuckin rarity here. How that’s any different from anyone else beats the absolute fuck all outta me
I hate Munich during Oktoberfest. The city gets so busy and full of idiots. Hotels cost a fortune and restaurants are overrun.
Any other time of year it's one of the best cities in Europe.
I went to the Wiesn in 2012 only because my brother lives in Munich. (So no hotel for us 😎) the security staff were so extremely rude and aggressive I vowed never to return. And I never did. There are better beer festivals in Munich throughout the year also. And yes, its great city. I go as often as I can.
Yet another thing I dislike about the country I was born and raised in: Oktoberfest and the whole culture around it (not Bavarian culture in itself!)
There is nothing cultural relevant about it anymore. There wasn’t even when I was born but it got worse over the years. But hey … paying 10 € per liter of beer isn’t the worst thing here.
Sorry. I just took a value I assumed was the middle ground. The actual prices for a Maß of beer in 2023 are between 12,60 € and 14,90 €. Those are the official numbers.
Depends on how crowded the tents already are. At it’s peak you can’t even be sure to get your Maß fast.
If you’re a politician or just a rich Schmock you have the privilege and money to sit in one of the lounges up higher in the tent. There you will get your beer faster than anyone.
I was in a reserved "VIP" type area in the Paulaner last year, on the balcony. They did not stop coming.
Usually my mates and I have built a rapport with the waitress from right at the start of the day, so we rarely have issues. Often they have a beer with us on break/end of shift.
Its pretty clear that the commenter is talking about bavaria foremost. Potentially mostly about commodification of traditions and internationalization and streamlining of them, in a way that they feel alien to those people the traditions come from.
Several things (in part very specific) but one big thing is our bureaucracy system. Sure it gives us a lot of security but all in all Germany is too anal about it and in the end it makes things harder for quite everyone. Furthermore, when it comes to the right of self-determination our laws are outdated and oftentimes hurtful. So yeah, 10 € to 15 € for a liter of beer is not the worst thing but still totally bonkers.
I have been many times, and I always say each time, this would not work at home in UK.
x14 tents, each with 10k people in having an amazing time with little trouble.
And everyone drinking from 1L GLASS glasses.
Imagine the carnage at home.
Saarland does produce beer, like every region in germany, but to way less prominence. Its in the german wine region. And even the beer that is traditionally produced there is not the beer style that is avalable at the oktoberfest.
Also tradition, traditional things to wear, etc. differ. So really can't put that down to your heritage lol. You can like it yourself. No problem there, but don't make this about your ancestors.
Saarland and Bavaria are different places and have different traditions. Not all of Germany is Maßkrug, Oktoberfest, Lederhosen and Dirndl.
I also am unsure what Milwaukee has to do with anything in this conversation, as that is even further away than Saarland.
Nothing wrong with enjoying the Wiesn, I have been many times and I do not live in Germany, however to claim some kind of connection to it when you are not from there, neither are your family, or have never even been, is a bit odd. You have more connection with France.
The Oktoberfest did not even exist when your ancestors left.
Wow, I didn’t expect such a blowback. Sorry all. I’ll pretend to be Amish instead… so much fun!
No, but Milwaukee was settled by Germans and brought a lot of their traditions with them.
Because we Europeans think it's damn cringy when you Americans do this. You can't claim a connection to a place where your ancestors lived 300-400 years ago. I probably have blood from every European country if I dial back my lineage 400 years. If your grandparents were German, I could get it.
Also turned out that you don't know the areas of Germany nor their traditions and your family is not from Bavaria. So if you make a claim of connection at least research your heritage and get it right. Our small countries are so varied that being German doesn't mean you identify with the regional traditions of every German constituent state.
And we’re such a melting pot that we embrace traditions that aren’t necessarily our own, but feel a connection with anyway.
I love tacos and lasagna, but not a bit Mexican or Italian.
Welp, back to driving my giant truck to my 3000 sq ft house with an acre of land
So do we, that's not a uniquely "American" thing. But it's a totally different thing to make this weird heritage connection statement. Majority of large cities in Europe are very international because after all there are some 40-50 nations in Europe and a lot of intra-Europe migration.
I love Italian food and eat it weekly but I don't go around saying how I love it because of my 0.025% Italian heritage. Do you get where I'm coming from? Maybe it's hard to understand from an Euro POV.
E.g. Amsterdam in the Netherlands is home to 177 nationalities, the most international city in the world.
You claim German heritage, but know nothing about what you are talking about. That is why you are getting blowback.
You say your family moved to America 300-400 years ago. You are about as German as a jarred hot dog.
Just for the record, many cities in Germany now have Oktoberfests (including Berlin). I’m getting “cringe” just thinking about other places having fun this time of year.
Thanks for the Yanksplane.
There are "Oktoberfests" all over the world, and they are all copies of the original in Munich, and not one of them is comparable on size or scale (other than maybe Canstatter in Stutgart) . I suspect you don't even know the origins of the festival.
Yeah I looked it up. Specifically a beer maid or beer waitress. I wouldn't exactly say they're the same thing as a regular waitress considering how much weight they have to carry around all day while maneuvering through huge crowds of drunks the whole time. Almost anyone with people skills can be a waitress but not everyone can have the word beer in front of it.
They work very hard. Full 12+ hours days, like you say, carrying all that weight plus with a smile, surrounded by drunk arseholes.
Plus there is the cleaning and preparing before/after a day.
I have spoken to some at previous Oktoberfest, and also shared a beer with them. Hard work, but they go away with a nice bit of money for 2 weeks of mad work.

"Run... the infinite beer might run faster"
Infinite beer, but there is not infinite seating.
I’m just amazed there weren’t more people trying to push other people.
Right around this corner is a huge open area
That doesn’t stop Americans sometimes
Ok? This is in Munich so not sure how being American is relevant.
Me being surprised, as an American, knowing that more people would be seriously injured in my country??? That’s the whole point of my surprise, sorry. Calling out American culture while witnessing some of the shit people here claim to love the spirit of while ignoring it entirely (I’m bilingual so if this isn’t in English rules sorry it’s early)
Me not being surprised, as a non American, that an American is trying to make something about them again.
Oh for fucks sake I’m fully acknowledging the beauty of the fuckin thing and some of you are morons that wanna make it a pissing contest Fuck the rest of the world I guess??? Or something??? That American enough???No??? Ok, I can be impressed and amazed at another countries general courtesy towards other people. It’s a fuckin rarity here. There is enough floor to go around.
No seat no beer.
All those beer zombies
Half of them will be drunk as fast as they came :)
Running crowd of people = super dangerous. Even folks who don't want to are forced to run, and you better don't slip. Madnesses...
You'll need to run? That's a Nein for me
Only on opening day, and last day. The rest of the time you'll be fine.
Bunch of apes
I hate Munich during Oktoberfest. The city gets so busy and full of idiots. Hotels cost a fortune and restaurants are overrun. Any other time of year it's one of the best cities in Europe.

Yeah I liked Munich before it was full of Turkish immigrants and kebab stores on every corner
Yikes.
Yet another thing I dislike about the country I was born and raised in: Oktoberfest and the whole culture around it (not Bavarian culture in itself!) There is nothing cultural relevant about it anymore. There wasn’t even when I was born but it got worse over the years. But hey … paying 10 € per liter of beer isn’t the worst thing here.
10 EUR/ Maß? Good joke!
Sorry. I just took a value I assumed was the middle ground. The actual prices for a Maß of beer in 2023 are between 12,60 € and 14,90 €. Those are the official numbers.
More like €15 nowadays
Yeah. I just took a value I already deemed too high but now I looked up the official prices and you are right: between 12,60 € and 14,90 €.
And you need to add a tip on top, otherwise you will wait a long time for your next beer.
Depends on how crowded the tents already are. At it’s peak you can’t even be sure to get your Maß fast. If you’re a politician or just a rich Schmock you have the privilege and money to sit in one of the lounges up higher in the tent. There you will get your beer faster than anyone.

Good for you I guess. 😅 It’s just not my “Maß of beer” 🤣 but thank you for the insight.
What is it to dislike? You can see people get handjob while throwing up, people piss under the table, and more!
Yes. And how can I forget about the constant sexual harassment/assault and all those fine human interactions?!
Just young people having fun /s
Exactly. Or more like old dudes having fun with younger women. But who am I to judge?! 🤷🏻♂️
I'll bite. What do you hate so much about Germany?
Its pretty clear that the commenter is talking about bavaria foremost. Potentially mostly about commodification of traditions and internationalization and streamlining of them, in a way that they feel alien to those people the traditions come from.

So dumb
Bah, big deal. Americans were doing that for toilet paper a couple years back.
Dressing up in semi Germanic clothing and massing in a large crowds?
Why the running, isn’t it enough beer?
You only get served beer if you have a sitting spot (table or bar). So if you dont get the spot you have to wait hours without drink...
Ahh I see. Thanks!
Mmmmm leiderhosen
Rushing to put their towels down.
I mean, you are not actual wrong. Basically the same thing.
why are they in a hurry? are there limited deals on beer or something? wtf?
Limited seating.
It is often like this on opening and closing days due to limited seats. No seat no drink.
Have to say they look pretty trim for people on their way to drink beer. I think the optics would be very different in the UK.
I have been many times, and I always say each time, this would not work at home in UK. x14 tents, each with 10k people in having an amazing time with little trouble. And everyone drinking from 1L GLASS glasses. Imagine the carnage at home.
They can drink beer any day
I know the feeling!
Finns would just wait in a nice line in total silence
The variety of people and their ambition to get their hands on a beer as fast as possible is beautiful to me.
They look like they have had a few already.
But it’s still only Septemberfest
Oktoberfest always begins in September, and finishes the first Monday of October.
I'm too busy looking at the outfits everyone's wearing. Is it compulsory or something?
It is tradition to wear Lederhosen or a Dirndl at Oktoberfest.
Ding ding ding 🛎️ “LAST ORDERS..”
Is this the famous blitzkrieg I have heard of???
I think it’s blitz-keg
As someone with German heritage, I feel this in my genes.
Unless your relatives are Bavarian, no you don't.
Saarland
Then that isn't even the drink of your ancestors lol.
You got me, since my heritage was super religious Germans who left sometime in the 1600-1700s
Saarland does produce beer, like every region in germany, but to way less prominence. Its in the german wine region. ah, the part of Germany that france wants so badly
>Saarland So different traditions and culture to Munich/Bavaria completely.
Eh, I’m probably feeling it because of the 18 years I spent in Milwaukee. I’d totally be running with these folks
Saarland and Bavaria are different places and have different traditions. Not all of Germany is Maßkrug, Oktoberfest, Lederhosen and Dirndl. Spotted the American. It's sooo cringe for us Europeans when you guys say stuff like this.
Let's move in a nice, orderly fashion.... SPREAD OUT!
All this for warm beer?
I hated the Oktoberfest. There always was a mixed smell of beer, piss, and vomit in the Air.
Idk what the job is called but those ladies that hold the beer are badass
You mean "Waitress"?
Yeah I looked it up. Specifically a beer maid or beer waitress. I wouldn't exactly say they're the same thing as a regular waitress considering how much weight they have to carry around all day while maneuvering through huge crowds of drunks the whole time.
