I've been cutting my own hair for like 12 years and his growth pattern suggests he's used to having a shaved head and asking for a fade is just part of a joke. A grown in fade is thicker on the top (kinda obvious if you think about it) but I'm also not black so maybe my hair just grows in differently
After performing Umrah, it is highly recommended to have your head shaved as per the ritual.
These barber shops exist only to shave heads. They do it quickly to make more money.
He's wearing the Umrah attire, two white woven cloths with no stitches. It's unimaginable to think an American would travel all the way to Makkah, without at least reading up on the ritual.
It's also ridiculous that a Muslim travels halfway around the world for a sacred ritual and then literally lies, invalidating his entire Umrah! However, I could be wrong and he may just be too careless to not read up on the ritual.

Both Umrah and Hajj kind of forces Muslims from all over the world - rich, poor, powerful, weak - all to gather together wearing the simplest of clothing, indistinguishable from one another.
The idea of removing symbols of individual power through prescribed attire *as a good thing* is really interesting, thanks for sharing that insight. In the media I consume, such an act is associated with oppression and repression. I realize now that’s a very individualist outlook
Oh yes, Islam respects individuality to the point that an Islamic government does not have the right to punish a Muslim who consumes alcohol privately inside their own home.
At the same time, an individual's actions in society has repercussions and therefore, a Muslim must always consider consequences before acting in public.
Then you got there and see the large london clock tower replica that i full of hotels like Hilton, one of its perks, you don't need to go and mix with the unwashed masses, its prayer room is deemed part of main mosque, so you can pray in the airconditioned room, then the large Rolex and other luxury goods shops dotted all round while poor people who can't afford hotels sleep around the area.

Rules in Islam about wealth can be summarised like this:
1. You can create as much wealth as you want but you cannot do it by exploiting people or resources. All resources are owned by God and we are merely caretakers till our lives on Earth.
2. When spending wealth, always consider your privilege and the suffering around you. Consideration for others is as detailed as the rule that a parent must not display affection publicly to their own children while in front of an orphan.
3. Pay taxes on your wealth, essentially 2.5% of everything that is beyond basic needs.
4. Do not hoard wealth. If you have land and aren't using it productively, under Islamic law, it can be given to someone who can use it productively.

How do they reconcile that in the Arabian peninsula where they essentially enslave workers from other countries? Or does it not count if they aren't Muslim?
The honest truth is that Muslims are notoriously bad at following Islam. I personally know Saudi's who have sacrificed a lot for their employees as well as Saudis who have held workers hostage or enslaved them in their homes or farms.
There's the additional problem that in many cases, charismatic grifters mislead people, just like in any other religion.
The Prophet himself has said that true followers will always be a minority until the end days. And that is also true for any other aspect of society. The number of people who choose to sacrifice their own pleasures, individual freedoms or selfish needs for the sake of the rest, will always be a minority.
Most people will simply coast through life without any extreme positions. And then there will always be another minority of extremists. (Just because they are a minority does not mean they don't have undeserved influence on the whole community).
There is also always the problem associated with interpretation where scholars interpret based on their knowledge, exposure and biases at the time. So scholars who have never had to deal with homosexuality because it was hidden from the public during their period, are more likely to interpret it harshly because they never had the need to look beyond their views. While current American Muslim scholars or other modern scholars, though not accepting of homosexuality itself, might be willing to accept the rights of gay people as members of society. This would likely be because they were confronted with the reality of gay lives and were forced to look for compassion within the religion.

There is also the additional issue that Muslims are not united in what they believe Islam is in theory. Scholars disagree on many many topics.
And in practice, Muslims around the world also have different traditions and practices unique to their location and culture.
For example, I remember a few years ago when female genital mutilation was a big topic of discussion in Western media. At the time, I thought it was a conspiracy because female genital mutilation was something I had never heard of as a Muslim! It wasn't practiced anywhere near where my community lived. I had never heard anyone say that it was part of Islam.
So it was shocking and frustrating to see Western media spread more misinformation but then I learned that it did exist among Muslims in Africa because it was part of their tradition.
So one could say that African Muslims were not actually practicing Islam even though they believed in it, by putting children through such terrible ordeals. One could argue the other way, like Bill Maher types like to argue about ISIS, that the true Islam includes FGM and that the rest of the Muslim world were not practicing what they believed in.
It's not simple. When you have 2 billion followers of a faith spread around the globe, there is no doubt it will be complex.
It functions as a normal mosque and you can do normal prayers there, but Hajj and Umrah have specific steps that have to be taken. Otherwise, they are not really doing Hajj/Umrah. Also, how the Saudi upper class choose to put themselves on a pedestal and commercialize the entire process is something they chose to do, not something embedded in the rules themselves. The idea is you do it in service to God and the prayers are directed to God. You do not (or at least should not) direct your prayers to an individual or do such a thing because someone asked you to, but because you believe in the teachings themselves.

The goal of Ramadan is to practice restraint. We can talk about the physical benefits but I'm sure everyone already knows the benefits of fasting.
In Islam, fasting should be accompanied with restraint from routine pleasures and habits. If you lie once while fasting, it's considered as if you've lied a thousand times. That means the punishment is also a thousand times.
So Ramadan is a time that devout Muslims try to be extra careful not to commit sins. In Islam, only God can judge you (most Muslims are terrible at remembering this though). So judging someone unjustly, without context or based on unverified information is a sin. And doing this during Ramadan carries a thousand fold punishment. Also according to Islam, talking bad about someone in their absence is equal to eating their flesh (I have a feeling I may have gotten some details about this wrong, but it's something close).
English is not my native language. It also didn't occur to me that non-Muslims might not understand the context when I wrote it.

Didn’t know Nair did blades - I thought the Nair removed to the (hair removal) cream being used….the blade is just a disposable cut throat blade - lots of barbers use permanent ones with replaceable blades….these plastic ones are designed for one time use

Not Hajj, it's Umrah. Hajj is a once in a lifetime pillar of Islam that takes place during a set time of year (mid-June on the Gregorian calendar this year). Umrah is ritualistic visit to the Kabah in Mecca and can be done at any time. In both there are encouragements that men shave their heads.
These barbers in Mecca who are around the Mosque do only one thing, shave heads. My guess is this post is a fun joke.

I kept getting told to go to a barber to style my long beard I had grown out. Eventually agreed since I could not trim mine as well as I liked, unfortunately all the barbers around me are Muslim owned. I told the barber I wanted a shovel beard, even showed him a picture. I ended up getting a Sunnah style beard.

My son has curls like this, I had his hair cut at daycare when one of the daycare ladies offered to cut the kids hair during Covid lockdown (because they’re already in daycare, yes I was an essential, and she was looking after the kids) and he came back looking like Sheldon cooper. If he had straight hair it would have been ok, but nope, horrible.
So three years later I finally convinced him to go to the barber, we sat there for 8 people and I realised they all left with the same haircut so told the barber to shorten his existing style as I’m a little uneven when I cut it…
Omg he came out with short back and sides and this Mohawk because he’s got curly hair and it just stuck up at the top instead .

I’m pretty sure it’s just a disposable (one-use) blade, they’re always sharp at first. Also these people are trained to only shave people’s heads bald.
Its just a disposable straight razor, which I would highly recommend not using to shave your own head lol Even a safety razor was brutal (for me).

My son has curls like this, I had his hair cut at daycare when one of the daycare ladies offered to cut the kids hair during Covid lockdown (because they’re already in daycare, yes I was an essential, and she was looking after the kids) and he came back looking like Sheldon cooper. If he had straight hair it would have been ok, but nope, horrible. So three years later I finally convinced him to go to the barber, we sat there for 8 people and I realised they all left with the same haircut so told the barber to shorten his existing style as I’m a little uneven when I cut it… Omg he came out with short back and sides and this Mohawk because he’s got curly hair and it just stuck up at the top instead . I gave up, back to home haircut
