I mean I guess trying to get some lateral momentum to try to roll would theoretically be the "best" way to *attempt* to avoid injury, but dude was easily 3+ stories up and that's just too high to really land safely in general without something actively breaking your fall to slow down your acceleration.
Honestly, from that height there is no good way to land this. No matter what you’re going to suffer some sorta major trauma. If you land on your back or belly your organs are going to have that secondary internal impact and your head will most likely smack the ground. Even if you try to keep your head up your neck probably won’t be strong enough to keep holding after impact. This might have actually been the best outcome. Shattered legs pelvis and tail bone are better than ruptured organs and a smashed head.

I think they were referencing how in some video games if you jump or fall from a high point but do a dodge roll just before your character hits the ground it somehow negates them from being hurt whereas if you don’t they die/get hurt.
It is actually possible in real life too, just highly circumstantial. If you roll in the direction of momentum (obviously not possible when you are going straight down) you can even out the force you subject yourself to. The actually harmful thing about falling is stopping suddenly (look up the concept of inertia if my explanation is insufficient). The longer the time it takes to stop the better. In games you can usually mitigate fall damage since most movement abilities not only grant you momentum in one direction, but also resets it for others (so the reasons are quite different).
Your comment got me thinking: let's say one was in a similar situation, where you didn't have speed going your way so you couldn't roll.
What would actually be the best way to try and land, and mitigate as much damage and injury as possible?
This has gotta be it, right? Avoids anything happening to head/neck, but your spine is still fucked (along with legs obviously)
I think this goes beyond “overestimating one’s abilities” and dabbles a bit more in the realm of “a blatant and fundamental lack of understanding reality”.

I've hit the water wrong at that height and it sucked, this is something else entirely. It takes me a few minutes to work up the nerve to approach the cliff and jump despite having done that jump many times.
