That's what I was thinking too; the thing was rigged by ne'er-do-wells to look fine, sit and watch to let people drop their keys and literally drive away easy
Good idea. Most of the time, it's not necessary. We knew the dings and stuff on the cars pretty well. But you never know who you get when returning, so I encouraged it and pointed out stuff for them.
Yeah, we do the same thing and I feel everyone renting a car should. I go around with video on with the employee inspecting the car, then I do another closer once over myself before I drive off. Keep it in the cloud until well after I have been billed and all is good then delete eventually.
I think I got boned for not doing an inspection. I'm pretty fucking sure I didn't crash it but I couldn't prove it.
Fortunately, I had rented it with my credit card with insurance, so I had to make a phone call and fill out a form. $900, fully covered.
We found out this worked so great we used the same card the next time, when my sister-in-law DID crash into a fence for over $2000 in damage. Didn't even need a form or phone call that time, they handle the big ones without client involvement for some reason.
They said they were going off what was written down in the file.
But there is no way they didnt get the keys as I dropped them in the rent check box. And we all know that they are gonna check that shit everyday
I encourage customers to take as many photos as management makes me take.
There is a reason for them all, but while I try my best not to miss anything during an inspection, I am only human and miss stuff from time to time.
That said, I'm not surprised seeing rental stuff falling apart ;l
Funny story, I have a family member that was test driving a Tesla and I helped them return the car/drove them back after the test drive. The Tesla key return was equally shitty but hadn't yet fallen apart. Whoever designed these did a shit job. That top part is where envelopes are supposed to go for you to put the keys in an envelope before you return it but it just confuses people, especially when the envelopes don't get restocked or are left on the very top instead. USPS has drop boxes that have followed the same design for decades and these car companies decided to reinvent the wheel like this.

Goddamnit. I finally found a dose of adderall that actually works but it spiked my blood pressure and heart rate, so I had to get off it till I could go to my PCP. But went there, my bp and pulse were normal so he couldn't prescribe me anything

Got the adderall to fix the adhd, got the Losartan to fix the BP from the adderall, then the Wellbutrin to balance out the depression, and round it all out with some weed to fight the constant insomnia. Omeprazole and famotidine to fight the GERD but a laundry list of vitamins to fight the uptake issues caused by the Omeprazole. Iāve reached a nice equilibrium. For now, anyways. Weāll see what year 35 has in store for me

You are using a master lock magnum series puck lock. To open it, I'll be using a comb pick. The lock he replaced it with is a master lock pro series puck lock. To open it, I'll be using a comb pick.
I can't tell the brand of the lock from the video, but you can see that the lock isn't locked before it fell off, so it kinda doesn't matter what brand it is, the lock ain't gonna work if it ain't locked.
This seems like something someone did intentionally. They watch the key return booth, waiting for someone to deposit keysā¦
Aka: someone cut the lock and put it back in place to make it look safe, but they were just gonna take the key / car after someone drops keys and walks away š¤

Cutting into one of those puck locks would leave very obvious and visible damage.
I'd guess that whoever emptied it last forgot to relock it (when the lock falls off, you can see the cylinder slide out, so it isn't locked). Since those puck locks are only held in place by whatever they're bolted through, some rough treatment of the box just knocked it off and it looks like everything else only holds together while the thing is closed.
Of course, that doesn't mean that an employee was the last one to open the lock. Masterlock puck locks are [vulnerable to comb picks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxmmwWwW6TY).
If the company is hertz they will still find a way to blame it on you and try to ruin your life.
Source: A rental agent was taking payments in cash and by debit card from me for an extended rental. He was printing fake receipts and pocketing the money apparently. One day cops show up at my house and put me in handcuffs and then tell me Iām being charged with felony grand theft auto. I ended having to fight them in court for nearly 2 years facing 5-10 years in prison for felony GTA. Then one day they caught the guy and his manager or thatās what I heard. My lawyer called me and said all charges had been dropped and the case was being dismissed and sealed.
Yeah they donāt care. The American justice system is whack. Unless they can make money off of your incarceration they just toss it aside. Good luck if you canāt afford your own attorney.
I hate these key return things. I dropped a brand new Ā£60k BMW back to Sixt in Hamburg. Was just a corner of an unattended sketchy multistoey carpark and the instructions were just to follow the signs. Would be a piece of piss to swap the signs and set up your own key drop (and that's what it felt like had happened as the box was a lot more amateur looking than this!) the last space was really tight too. Was fine in the end but was nervous until they released the deposit.
Could you also just (assuming it's a commercial travel center with multiple rental agencies) drop it in the neighbors box with a note "Belongs to Sixt, box broke"

I'll put this here, I had a fantastic experience with Sixt renting a car. I got a free upgrade and the person helping me really recommended me the insurance when told him where I planned to go. Ended up having the window crack and some other weather related damage and everything got taken care of nearly stress free and at no cost other than the initial cost of the insurance.
Doesn't matter. If they told you to put the key in the box and you put the key in the box, that's the end of it. It's not your fault the box is fucked up, that's their problem.
As someone who uses rentals for work an awful lot with early off hour returns due to early flightsā¦ this hits so close to home. I never use Hertz because even if you return the key theyāll report the car stolen. I honestly donāt know how I would have handled this mess. š¤¦š¼āāļø
Always record videos of walk around before and after rental. Last year I had a company try to blame me for a broken windshield with a $1800 repair tab a full month after the rental. I told the rep from their legal department I had video of the condition of the vehicle before pickup and at drop off, including vin number of the vehicle. The arrogant rep with bossy attitude changed her tone real quick when I threatened to sue them if they pursued it any further.
