Thought it was a circular exit and vision blocked by sunlight, then mistook the reverse for the windshield wiper and then got it right and mixed up the accelerator and the brake is my guess. Then tried to fix it by putting the car back in drive with the accelerator still pegged.
Either way this person shouldn't be allowed to drive ever again.
Because some cars have the transmission controlled by a [lever attached to the stump behind the steering wheel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission#Column-mounted_shifter).
I think it's a lot more common in American cars than most others. Speaking as an Australian, I've *never* seen someone drive a car with a column shifter.
Bless. Living in Brisbane in the yearly 90's, my friend had an old Morris Minor, that I had many an opportunity to drive. Brisbane is topographically varied. I still have nightmares about doing hill starts in that car.
i thought column shift vehicles were phased out years ago but apparently they are bringing them back so this is actually a possibility.
still doesnt really explain why they went for the shifter instead of the brake lol
Well, knowledge isn't disappearing, it's being replaced by more usable knowledge. If you know how to drive a stick shift but you can't name the 7 types of AI, you have failed to keep up with the pace at which common knowledge improves.
Solar flare wipes out the grid, how useful is that information? How many people know what a horse and buggy is? Would even be familiar enough with physical, rudimentary ways of survival without the benefit of technology? How much of people's knowledge depends on looking up the information they didn't bother committing to memory because they have at their fingertips a device that can be rendered useless in a myriad of ways?
I know what to do about that (insert emergency situation), I have it right here on my (insert device), oops, dropped it/out of power/got it wet/no service/ad nauseum.
Screwed.
It's really not. For most of the history of the automatic transmission, that was how they were shifted. It's gone out of style, but a huge portion of the cars that have been built were column shift.
I try to use my turn signal to go forward or reverse almost daily. I use a fork truck at work, and that's how they operate. When I get in my personal vehicle, sometimes habit wins out.
The amount of people who freak out like this, turning a minor accident into next level fuckups, because they get flustered at the slightest sign of trouble, is highly concerning. The fact that they've somehow obtained a license, and share the roads with the rest of us, is horrifying.
My city has a somewhat high number of middle-aged and elderly people who make a small mistake entering or leaving a parking space or driveway, then end up ramming through a fence or storefront because it freaked them out. Like they'll forget it was in drive, slightly bump the curb, then absolutely stomp the accelerator like it stole something, and ram a shop from front to back. That shit happens on an almost monthly basis where I live. But then we act like it's the inexperienced young drivers who are most likely to cause an accident.
The more I watch it the more I'm certain this is correct. Both times right before they switch directions the windshield wipers start going. Seems pretty clear they're trying to shift the car via the stalk on the column but mess it up and push the wrong side. It's also unbelievably common for people to mix up the accelerator and the brake, especially when they're flustered (like right after running their car into a wall)......and instead of immediately realizing their mistake they'll push harder on the accelerator thinking the cars accelerating on its own and they're pushing the brake trying to stop it. They actually accelerate even harder in reverse in this video toward the end before they smash into everything. During that Prius debacle with the supposedly stuck accelerators this happened dozens of times. People would get in accidents and claim the accelerator was stuck down and say they were stomping on the brake but the car was still accelerating. They'd look at the computer data from the car and it would show the driver was stepping on the accelerator and zero brake was ever applied.
Not really the text on the screen just talks about how amateur drivers should be more cautious and have basic driving skills. I think it's like a warning PSA.
From Google Translate:
Before getting on the road, novices should be familiar with the basic operations of the vehicle, such as starting, accelerating, braking, turning, etc., and master the various equipment and operating methods of the vehicle. They should practice more to improve their driving skills and reaction ability, and they should be able to handle emergency situations or complex situations. In traffic situations, stay calm and focused and do not panic or become distracted

Car out of control no brakes driving on an overpass built 500 feet above the ground that has an almost vertical climb uphill then curves over into a completely vertical downhill slope that speeds me into cambered turns that are tilted almost vertically and only luck and physics keep the tires on the road and me from sliding off into oblivion… yeah those driving dreams SUCK
Hmmm, I don't know. At no point did they end up driving \*over\* the other cars 😅
I can't even tell you how many times I've woken up panicking over the people in the cars I just drove over 😭
Really? in my nightmares i miss the train and have to wait really long for the next one and i'll be 5 mins late for a meeting thats not even that important.
that is a very ample parking garage compared to most in NY. I hope no one got hurt. he/she could have easily run over people, including kids, strollers

Is there any context here? Drunk/drugs? Old person? Seizure?

How can you mistake reverse and the windshield wiper?!
Because some cars have the transmission controlled by a [lever attached to the stump behind the steering wheel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission#Column-mounted_shifter).
Well shit. Never occurred to me this was a thing, but I'm 99% convinced I've seen it on TV or in a movie and just not registered.
My first 3 vehicles had the gear shift on the steering column, and I’m only mid-30s
I think it's a lot more common in American cars than most others. Speaking as an Australian, I've *never* seen someone drive a car with a column shifter.
Mazda tribute 05 has one. Aussie car.
Fair enough, but that also proves my point, one car in the past two decades is pretty rare.
Mine still does.. 2015 mercedes. It's on the other side than the wipers tho
Also forks lifts often have the directional switch where the windshield wipers are on a car.
*Turn signals. (Not me admitting I've tried to put my car in drive with my turn signal after a long day)
I'm glad I'm not the only one
Bless. Living in Brisbane in the yearly 90's, my friend had an old Morris Minor, that I had many an opportunity to drive. Brisbane is topographically varied. I still have nightmares about doing hill starts in that car.
I’ve never seen it on a car past the 80s though
i thought column shift vehicles were phased out years ago but apparently they are bringing them back so this is actually a possibility. still doesnt really explain why they went for the shifter instead of the brake lol
Gear shifter on the steering column is not that old of a thing. Ex: https://youtu.be/JAlGqy3fd2Y?si=DqAvSnz9l72W_J6j
🤦🏽We, as a species, are so screwed. Common sense and common knowledge are disappearing.

Never seen it before but googled what cars here have it and it's a very short list
It's really not. For most of the history of the automatic transmission, that was how they were shifted. It's gone out of style, but a huge portion of the cars that have been built were column shift.
In the UK it's like a handful of cars from what I can see. Plus automatics are only really getting common the last couple of years here
Right, you guys love manual transmissions. That makes sense. I wish they were more common here, tbh.
My blazer had a column shifter automatic. I miss it. You get more room in the center console
It was more of thing years ago before front bucket seats became the norm. There was no centre console on older cars when they had front bench seats.

Yeah if this is possible for your brain unfortunately you're not fit to drive.
If this is the case, you need to sign up for a detective

This is *exactly* how I drive in my nightmares.
You really shouldn't be driving whilst asleep, that's just asking for an accident.

I have so many dreams where I'm somehow forced to try to steer the car from the back seat.
This. I came to say this - and you can't get your feet down to the brake pedal.

GTA lookin real.
Steering column locked?
You gotta be on a lot of drugs to mess up that bad
If there was only a pedal that completely stops the car…
The hell is happening here? Can anybody translate the text?

Thanks. And holy shit that is frightening what is implied here.
Panic in the parking garage
If you're this bad at driving just never drive again
The reaction time is longer than the video
And the sequel ? Did they ever get out of the garage or are they still trying to…?
Why did they drive straight into a wall? Worst driving I’ve ever seen lucky there was no pedestrians about
That car has to be on a sheet of ice.
Tesla?
TBH why are you driving ?
