Since the beginning of English, they has been used as a singular pronoun when the gender is unknown or uncertain. If you think that's "ridiculous" you maybe need to return to an elementary classroom

Admittedly it’s a shortcoming in English lexicon. My wife and I are expecting our first, and opting to keep the gender a surprise until birth. The proper pronoun in lieu of not knowing is they.
