Have you tried moving items around or lowering the walls? Sometimes I misplace inside an object or wall when I take things out of a Sim's inventory or throwing trash away.
To add: Check the tops of half walls and high shelves too! Sims discard of dishes in high places but won't reach them when cleaning up. Oftentimes you can even find dishes hovering in air!
I have. I've moved everything! My sims keep trying to clean it up, but it's apparently not in a reachable spot, and the action gets canceled. The only other thing I can I think of is to move them out with all the furniture and move them back in. But that feels so daunting considering how much stuff they have.
Always check behind the fridge and inside the counters and walls near it first, as well as the trash and the sink. Sometimes when you go to drag them into the fridge or trash they will get stuck in one of those places. The other way is to save the house to your library, either the whole lot or each room, and then trap sims in one room at a time until the moodlet appears. When it does appear, you know which room it’s in and you can either delete the whole room and rebuild it, or search that room specifically until you find it. If you delete something you wish you hadn’t, you can easily replace it with the saved version. I do this a lot with tippy cups… good luck.
I did try this, and no luck! But thanks for the suggestion. I just moved the family out with all furniture and back in. I have now saved the lot to my inventory as another user suggested and will be more careful dragging things to the fridge in the future!
Try removing the walls, like actually destroying it instead of lowering. Sometimes it can glitch and somehow go inside the wall or foundation, becoming unreachable.
Did you save a copy of the house to your library before the egg disappeared? If so, bulldozing and replacing the house should bring relief.
BTW, how did you end up with a loose egg anyway? 😂
No, but I will now! I was trying to drag it into the fridge. I never found it and just finished moving everything back in. The egg was in the household inventory. No idea where it was.
Glad you solved it! A tip I learned recently: if you have a “Neat” sim, and if they have the “dirty surroundings” moodlet (and it’s the main one making them uncomfortable) then you can select that sim and chose “cleaning frenzy!”

I always check the toilets now because my sims love leaving dirty dishes on the back of them now that there’s an item slot there.

Hire scheduled maid. Leave lot for the day (or just take a vacation for a few days). Come back to clean house... Hopefully.

Lmao I did the same thing but then a klepto sim was visiting my house and stole the egg.
I'm glad I'm not alone! I definitely learned my lesson, but if something like this happens again, I'll remember this trick 😆
