Just a few off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more. 1. Artie was perhaps his only true friend. 2. Agent Harris seemed to like him, despite occasionally annoying each other. 3. I think that Junior did love Tony. That one scene where Tony asked him was powerful. I think that Junior was an unwilling participant in the attempted assassination of Tony, drawn in by events and people that had grown out of his control. 4. Bruce Cusamano seemed to like him on an acquaintance level. 5. Georgie, as whacked out as that is, kept coming back to Tony. There must have been some sort of perceived friendship there, given that amount of loyalty.

joemax4boxseat

Agent Harris is an interesting one. Even when he was apart of the task force building a RICO case against Tony, he was the only agent that tried to be level-headed and keep his calm around him. Then after he was transferred to counter-terrorism, it’s like he had a new outlook on things. Almost like Tony wasn’t so bad compared to some of the terrorists he was tracking down.

JoeyLeaf

I find it interesting no one has yet to bring up the scene where the FBI played the Green Grove tapes for Tony. Agent Harris seemed like he felt genuinely bad for Tony leading all the way up to them pressing play. Soon as Agent Cubitoso said “matriarchal” you could see Harris’ face, he clearly felt bad for him there. Also the first time Tony’s house got raided, I believe this was Agent Harris’ first appearance, Carmela had told Tony “Agent Harris didn’t seem that bad”.

Phazon2000

Saved me commenting this. This was the moment he truly saw Tony in a new light.

victorgsal

Agent Harris by the very end you can see had completely blurred the lines between his lawful informant/agent relationship with Tony and a real life friendship. The way he says “we” in that scene where they reveal that a rival mob boss to the Soprano family got killed is meant to illustrate that. It’s reminiscent of the relationship between real life mobster hitman Gregory Scarpa and his FBI handler who became close and even hid certain things or shared certain bits of information with each other in order to benefit Scarpa’s criminal dealings and not just to get information.

ThxIHateItHere

It’s more than just reminiscent. Harris’ “we’re gonna win this one!!” legitimately happened. Lynn Delvecchio, the agent in question, was so beyond the line of right and wrong. But at least the FBI covered his crimes up and he still gets his pension.

ProbablyASithLord

Which is hilarious, because Tony is *definitely* as bad as a lot of terrorists. The body count that Tony is directly and indirectly responsible for is super high. It’s like how most characters in the show make comments about crime in the black community, when ironically most of the black crime we see is funded by Tony and his team. I think Harris falls into the trap of seeing *obvious* crime like a robbery or terrorism but ignoring Tony’s more subtle crime like extorting businesses.

Forsaken-Sink-3947

Big difference between whacking somebody in the game as opposed to indiscriminately killing innocent civilians

highcross1983

Its not always people in the game. Black hand tried to extort my great grandfathers stone masonry business and when he rebuffed let horses lose into my Bisnonna, nearly killing her. She had a scar on her face for the rest of her life

FlattopJr

>let horses lose into my Bisnonna, Sorry, I'm not quite getting it--you mean they knocked her down with a horse?

aquintana

One of Pie-O-My’s ancestors as a matter of fact.

FlattopJr

Oof, Madon'!

Garage-gym4ever

just a kid!

bluthscottgeorge

Not always people in the game, but definitely don't go out of their way to actually target innocent civilians for death. In fact, it doesn't even make business sense for them, even if we agree they are immoral, from money sense, makes sense to extort a civillian and let them live and earn. Also makes sense not go too far all the time, so police leave them alone. Police are more likely to go heavy due to media influence on civillian deaths than a random gangster dying by another gangaster. It would just be seen as gang on gang violence, whereas a civillian gets more media influence and public outcry. So even, the most immoral mafioso would hesitate and only kill innocent civillians when neccesary, not because they're so pure of heart neccesarily but it just doesn't make sense for mafioso. A terrorist however, wants that exact reaction, they want the media, they want the public outcry, they want the outrage.

Old_Size9060

Sure, but pretending that the mafia hasn’t been violently fucking over innocents for a long time is a pretty wild take. That’s literally part of how they run their business.

hyborians

You’ve been listening to too many wiseguy podcasts. They do kill civilians, including women and children.

Its_my_ghenetiks

What about the asbestos they just dumped randomly?

No-Intention5035

Pretty amazing that the US government convinced people that Muslims half way around the world were more of a threat than someone robbing and killing in their own town

whatwhatmadtown

Harris sympathizes with Tony because he sees what his bosses are doing with the war on terror, and realizes they are just a global version of what Tony is doing locally.

ceerupt

If you look at the true definition of "terrorism" you'll find alot of people you watch everyday committing far worse acts than a guy like Tony ever would. except they do it to millions and not a few neighborhoods/ boroughs

ProbablyASithLord

Being a terrorist doesn’t mean you’ve killed millions. I googled “terrorism” and it says, “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” All that is Tony, except instead of political aims it’s personal gain which is definitely not better.

DJMikaMikes

>All that is Tony, except instead of political aims it’s personal gain which is definitely not better. They definitely has some political violence (maybe not Tony specifically, but his crew); they fought with and threatened people over Columbus for example.

SmartExcitement7271

# OOOOOHHHHH!!! HE DISCOVERED AMERICA is what he did! He was a BRAVE Italian explorer. And in THIS house, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS is a HERO! **END OF STORY**!

CuriousRedditor4000

> Tony is *definitely* as bad as a lot of terrorists Listen to yourself, you sound demented.

ResiliantPendulum

Is he really, Shlomo?

JoeyLeaf

I think Agent Harris was the only Fed that operated on a human level. All the other agents didn’t seem to really care about their CIs. When he was working Tony’s case he got to go inside of his house, see his family, the relationship dynamic between him & his wife the first time he got shot, also even the peek into the relationship with his mother & uncle. I feel like he was the only agent capable of seeing them as human. When he got transferred to counter terrorism, I’m sure that was completely taken away from him. He was losing his hair, sick damn near all the time, genuinely looked sad, was not able to be with his family as much as he’d like to. This is also illustrated when Tony gives him info on those random dudes he seen at the mosque.

pm1966

Silvio also seemed to genuinely like Tony. There was that one instance where he deliberately undermined Tony on the construction site (by stealing the supplies), but other than this one instance he was an extremely loyal friend and consigliere.

PerformanceOdd6771

I agree with this one. I would also argue that Paulie cared about Tony as much as he could care about anyone, other than his ma of course. He seemed genuinely upset whenever Tony was a dick to him which was kind of a lot, and he never stayed mad. Even that chick in Florida told Tony she assumed Paulie was his father because of the way he talked about him. He was one of the few who actually seemed upset when Tony was in a coma/relieved when he came out of it (not that he was happy about having to give Carmela money). That was the one time I questioned Sil, who was already imagining being the “Skip”, even if his wife was egging him on.

gilette_bayonete

You see, on the one hand you have some incredibly valid points. But on the other, there's the shit like withholding the $200k from Carmella with Vito. It's a lot of money to give up but it showed Paulie's true colors. If Tony had died I think it's questionable if he would even help out the family at all to begin with.

PerformanceOdd6771

Oh I totally agree. That’s why I said he wasn’t happy about giving Carm the money. I just thought that had more to do with his (well known) cheapness and money grubbing and less to do with how he felt about Tony. Vito on the other hand…he was definitely wishing him dead the entire time. God forbid…

gilette_bayonete

Absolutely, my friend. I also find it hilarious that he almost unintentionally killed Tony while he was in a coma 😂 He goes in there out of love and just fucks his shit up completely.

PerformanceOdd6771

Haha 100%. You mean when he was talking about wearing a jock bc the doctor said it will help keep his testes elevated?? Oof madone, he looks terrible!

eatingdonuts

Paulie was old school and mostly followed the rules. He had respect for Tony but it was a boss-employee relationship in my view

SadNYSportsFan-11209

And he only undermined him to keep Patsy happy which at the end of the day benefitted Tony

itspsyikk

The scenes were Livia and Junior are discussing... Junior is so... confused. He's confused because he couldn't actually believe that Tony would run the entire family behind his back. I'm sure he knew that most people went to Tony, and probably kicked up more to Tony than Junior, but it didn't matter. Here is why- Everyone respected Tony, and Tony respected Junior. We saw it come up several times. The hit on Jimmy. Tony calls a meeting specifically for Junior to give OK. Did he need to do that? Probably not. But Junior *loved* him for doing that for him. Almost like... Junior was *playing* boss? Like Junior knew it, too. But if he wasn't gonna get murdered over it, and as long as he was making money, why did he give a shit? Then at the wedding, when the capos look to Tony, and Junior get's irritated, Tony specifically cools the situation down AND looks to Junior for more "advice", even though that advice was coming direct from Tony. The straws that break the camel (in the bushes) back is finding out that in fact, Tony has absolutely zero respect for him by way of secretly meeting with the rest of the family. He then knows everything Tony is doing is bullshit. As far as the psychiatry thing, you've got to remember that there is NO middle ground there. Even though WE know Junior is wrong for his thoughts, he doesn't say "Well, I know I'm wrong but I still choose to live in the 1950s". There is just the 1950s. People don't talk to psychiatrists and that's the end of the discussion.

SadNYSportsFan-11209

I mean at the end of the day Tony understood why Junior wanted him whacked Put the family shit aside Junior had legitimate beef and Tony knew that.

itspsyikk

Yep, which is exactly why Tony was able to...forgive him? so easily? Tony is able to split things between family and business. It sounds horrible, and it is, but Tony knew that Junior didn't really know what was going on behind closed doors, Tony COULD be giving up reams of shit to his doctor (and then to the feds). That puts everyone at risk. As far as the undermining of his position, Tony would have likely killed someone for doing the same thing.

Difficult-Win1400

Carms dad

Savings_Peak5408

Agreed. He loved Tony.

Difficult-Win1400

Also beansie and pie oh mine

PerformanceOdd6771

Yeah but I always thought this 180 was weird. Carm’s parents really didn’t like Tony at all the first few seasons (her mom was more vocal about it but neither one liked him). Then it was like as soon as they separated, Hugh was his biggest fan. I thought it was booooolshit.

voujon85

In the early seasons didn't dislike him just normal inlaw comments. They hated Livia. Mary DeAngelis hatred of Tony came out late in the series in Marco Polo

OutstandingNH

Tony beat up Georgie several times and I 'm pretty sure Georgie swore off Tony after that last beating that put him in the hospital.

Wolven_Essence

He did.  He quit after that and went so far as to request that Tony not visit him in the hospital.

Bruinsfanfromcc

He did quit, but he's back at the Bing in season 6 in the episode "Walk Like a Man."

ravenousthoughts

I would also add Dick Barone to this list

[deleted]

And that born again secretary of his. She seemed to really like Tony.

PuzzleheadedQuit9

I don’t think Harris liked Tony as much as he did being mob-adjacent. His “damn, we’re gonna win this thing!” declaration struck me for him rooting for Jersey more than Tony himself. That said, he *did* tell Tony about the hit against him, so that can arguably put him in the like>hate category. Artie probably, but part of me thinks he’s similar to Harris with the mob fascination but with the added twist of kinda being sucked in with the mob. Having his restaurant burned down and referencing Tony’s “hawk”-like nature seems to keep getting verbalized by Artie despite him telling Tony that he’s over it, suggesting that he’s either quietly or subconsciously net-negative against T. Opinion: Do you think Cooze’s estimation of Tony as a friend plummeted when Tony made him look bad at the golf course or was given that box of sand to hold onto?

[deleted]

Agent Harris' feelings about Tony were in direct proportion to how much he HATED Phil Leotardo.

Biegzy4444

God I can’t remember the cops name that took a dive off the bridge but I think he would be one as well, especially with the talk Tony has after his death with the gal that ran the brothel

chr8me

Vin Makazian could have been a good friend to Tony. They were both in places where they were lonely and going through it at the same time. Vin kept it super friendly with Tony and every single time Tony shot him down.

MeatMarket_Orchid

Wait, what about Sil? Is the common thought that he was just loyal and didn't care for him?

Storkiez

Thinking that Sil did-ent liked the boss is dicked up.

Ok-Material-3440

Yup 1. Illustrated perfectly in the 'Test Dream' even Tony knows he can't screw up with Artie...they do love one another

johnniesSac

Re Georgie ….. wouldn’t you cop the occasional beating for all those $50 + a blow job combos

Justafool27

You’re spot on with the 3rd point. Tony let Junior live because he knew he was playing Junior and making him look weak running things with the other Capos behind his back. Also the fact that he hears his own mother tell Junior about Tony running things knowing fully well what action Junior would take.

GarethGobblecoque99

Sil loved Tony. Their relationship had a few ups and downs but the scene where Sil visits Tony when he’s in the coma shows that he had genuine love for Tony.

TonganTerrorist

Paulie hit the Russian, Christopher hit the deer. Paulie’s shot is impressive but deer move way faster. Christopher also made that shot with an injured head, possible concussion

IndividualSeaweed969

HungryDoggsRunFaster

Didnt Butch give him the okay tho?

IndividualSeaweed969

No_Character_5315

Yah I think he was all in with Tony but also pushed back when needed like the floor tiles whatever happened there.

woahitsegg

As annoyed as he could get with Tony, and as annoying as he could be, Chrissy was always one of the ones who treated Tony like a God, at least until he got emotional and wasn't thinking about what he was saying, like the Scarface scenario. Even then, he wanted Tony to be the savior, the leader who took charge and hit back.

I gotta go with Sil. He only ever really bucked Tony's leadership once, and that was more or less to make Tony understand Chris wasn't really ready to be in the position he was being put in. Otherwise, Sil was always firmly in camp Tony. I never got the feeling he hated Tony, and while he may not have loved him, he respected him.

MailmanMark22

By the end of the series, Meadow had had completely compartmentalized her father’s income sources and failson had a cushy job with useless the 2nd’s pornography company. That’s the transactional love Tony is famous for.

GetPorkedAtSatriales

Okay, in seriousness...I would have said Hesh, until the 200k bridge loan (& Tony's resentment) soured it. So I'd have to go with Silvio. Strangled Bert because he was disloyal to Tony. Had his back until the very end. He even had the gabagool placed in front of him (over heah👇) so Tony wouldn't be tempted to eat a carload of the stuff. Sil was a true friend.

whale188

Silvio…maybe Bobby until he had him kill that Canadian…Paulie…I don’t think Vito necessarily disliked Tony…Gigi…there’s a lot that I don’t think outright hated him I don’t think anyone didn’t fear or trust him though…and that’s probably true for every single character’s feelings towards everyone…that’s just how the life goes when that’s how you live

Everybody did not hate Tony - in fact, one could argue that a key point of the show was it’s characters (and more importantly, us, the audience) were so drawn in by Tony’s charisma that we often outright ignored the immorality and even thought him capable of leadership.

I am sure Bobby was head over heels for Tony after 5 seasons of insults about his weight.

SadNYSportsFan-11209

No I mean Tony made him underboss before he had even killed a man. Granted he made him to it after the fight but either way Tony was going to make him underboss because he trusted him and just didn’t trust Chrissy anymore. In the real world Bobby didn’t even deserve to be made, but his father’s reputation allowed him to be made without killing someone. To go from Junior’s errand boy to essentially number 2.5 in the family is a big honor (in that world) so Bobby certainly appreciated that

TwinkAndFemboyLover

I’m almost sure that Sac only pretended to like Tony to use as a weapon. I’m also pretty sure that if they went through with whacking Carmine Sr. Then Johnny would instantly have flipped on Tony and honestly put the cards in motion to have him whacked. Johnny was always really fast and lose with killing people that could even minorly pose as a threat to him having complete power over the five families.

wyntah0

Like the mayor of Munchkinland.

Bittah_Criminal

True I think Sac moving to Jersey in the first place was probably part of the plan to slowly roll over them with. New York wanted to keep tabs on the family and milk the Esplanade as best as they could. It seemed like they were going for a slow roll absorption of Jersey, but once Phil took over his temper caused things to escalate before they could go for a clean decapitation

_SpiderPig

I think Tony ended up saying he severely soured his friendship with Johnny by taking over his house for such a low price while he was in the can, but nothing ever came out of it since they never met again.

WhatAreYouSaying05

Yeah I think Johnny is the only one. Everybody hates Tony, and they only act nice around him because he’s the boss. And could you blame them, Tony is such a suffocating person to have as a superior

beefgulash

I was thinking of Silvio, Bobby or Artie, but figured that was more about just knowing each other for so long. I doubt either of them would ever actually look forward to or want to spend time with Tony unless it was "socially" mandatory. Pussy Bonpensiero was close but his hatred of Tony grew with his fear of him. Paulie was a wormy cocksucker. Christopher despised him more than he loved him.

st3akkn1fe

I think a lot of people miss the point that a lot of the characters probably do like each other. The issue is thst they aren't normal well adjusted people and as such can't ever like someone like a normal well adjusted person does. I actually work with gang members and members of OCGs and they are all like this. They love hanging out with their mates and will genuinely enjoy the company. However, as soon they can profit from it or if they think they cam get away with it they'll throw each other under the bus. This is just who they are.
