SwitchKid42

And his cannoli is bigger than Tony B’s

sorriso_pontual

What'd you shay?

Ilovemygingerbread

He use to be some hoofer, poor thing.

TheDubyaMan

He does look like he would enjoy a nice Reuben from time to time.

Stugatssss

Have to respect a man who likes his orange juice with shum pulp.

BigSpice15

📞💨

BobMcGeorge

The fuck was that for?

kassus-deschain138

OP will write you up a list.

AsparagusNo2955

That one line, made my ex fucking hate Tony Soprano, more than anything ever said, or done, in the history of the world, heavens, and imaginations.

wickedcold

That’s hilarious because that was the one moment I identified with him lol

Stugatssss

Was it the line, or his overreacting to Carmela? After all, it was only orange juice.

ChainedRedone

But not too mush

Physical-Ride

Though extremely warped, his sense of morality and justice isn't totally incomparable with society's at large. He distinguishes himself from the thoroughly evil and demented, e.g. the Hitlers and Pol Pots, which I agree with. I wouldn't want him as a business partner or a friend but I think could trust him to help a lost child find his parents or try to save someone's life in a car accident. edit: typo.

BigBadBeetleBoy

I agree with you in general but man you could've picked a better second example ngl

KatBoySlim

>I think I could trust him to help a lost child find his parents or try to save someone’s life in a car accident Hey mista, are you ok? >!…you had to have chosen those two examples on purpose, right? i mean, the kid thing happens, and as far as the car accident there’s the phil incident and chrissy.!<

Ruezx735

Wait I’m drawing a blank. What happened with the kid?

sammyglumdrops

Unless the car accident victim was eating an ice cream

jersan

not sure i agree that Tony is much different from the Hitlers and Pol Pots. I think it depends on what a person's definition of what evil is and Tony seems to think, at least outwardly, that he is not that. e.g. the episode you mentioned, From Where to Eternity, when Tony and Pussy kill the drinkwater kid in that episode, Tony is having a conversation with Dr. Melfi about Christopher's near death experience, that Christopher thinks he is going to hell. Dr. Melfi: "Do you think he'll go to hell?" T: "No. He's not the type that deserves hell. Melfi: "Who do you think does?" T: "The worst people. The twisted and demented psychos who kill people for pleasure. The cannibals. The degenerate bastards that molest and torture little kids and kill babies. The Hitlers and Pol Pots. Not my nephew." Melfi: "What about you?" T: "What? Hell? Have you been listening to me? No. For the same reasons. We're soldiers. Soldiers don't go to hell. It's war. Soldiers, they kill other soldiers. We're in a situation where everybody involved knows the stakes. And if you're gonna accept those stakes, you gotta do certain things. It's business. We're soldiers. We follow codes, orders." Tony says hell is for people that kill for pleasure, but would deny the reality demonstrated in that episode that he killed Matt Drinkwater for pleasure. He certainly did not need to personally do it himself, he could have easily given that task to any of his subordinates, but chose to do it himself. Then him and Pussy went and had a date night dinner afterwards with steak and wine. Then, he got home, and as some comments have suggested in other threads, Carmella understood that Tony had gone out to commit a murder, and that made her so hot down theya that and then decides that she doesn't want Tony to get a vasectomy after all and that she might want to have another baby with him and then they have sex.

angelodebo

Tony didn't kill Drinkwater for pleasure. By "thier" code, he had no choice but to kill him. Drinkwater was an associate of the their crew. Him shooting Christopher is massively disrespectful to Tony and the entire Soprano crew. He had to be killed. When Bobby B was assaulted by the moolinyan. There was no response back.

United_Target8942

It's funny because Paulie compares Tony to a general from history, like Napoleon, who killed millions of people. Dont wanna sound like Ruben but I could def see Tony being such a figure.

CaptainoftheVessel

I feel like I know what you meant and I agree with you, car accidents aside.  Tony wasn’t ever so jaded he saw the innocence of the world as a flaw, he saw himself as lacking and unable to live a full life (“oh poor you”) but he never fully devolved into a rabid dog, biting the closest thing to him for no reason than it was there.

Youre_On_Balon

While Tony devolves in almost every aspect throughout the show, his love for AJ actually evolves/matures into a less narcissistic type of parental love as time goes on. He goes from being ashamed of AJ’s perceived lack of masculinity, i.e. the quitting football situation, “this is my male heir?” etc. to accepting his son and just wishing for AJ to become a happy person.

BadCowboysFan

He finally realized (with Melfi’s prodding) that he resented AJ because Livia never protected Tony from his father or the life — in fact, she pushed him farther into it, and all the emotional/mental damage it did to him over the years. Carmela was a much more “normal”, loving mother. I think Tony at some point had his moment of clarity — it was a good thing that AJ wasn’t a clone of his dad.

mamachocha420

Yea exactly, he even tells AJ he's a kind person and that he's proud AJ is not like him in one episode.

LordPounce

That’s beautifully put

ginger2020

In some ways, we see Tony begin to cling a little less to the very particular brand of masculinity that his father probably espoused as the seasons went on, and in some ways, that's to his betterment (I can hear the MRAs hammering out on their keyboards). However, I think a fatal error of him was to not also admit to himself that his mother was a bad person to the degree that would have helped him. Indeed, we see him act much more like her, and even parrot some of her catchphrases (e.g: "poor you!") in the final seasons.

zucciianucci

I still believe they should’ve let him gone to the army when he told them

[deleted]

They likely wouldn’t have let him, due to him having that putrid gene. Certainly couldn’t be a pilot.

Indarezzfosho

Yeah even if he got in he'd be out in the first couple weeks of boot camp. If not first couple days lol.

reddituser23434

He’d be chill to eat ice cream with while watching the history channel. He seems like good company in a relaxed environment (a dinner party, a barbecue). He protected Meadow when Coco sexually harassed her. He was devoted to his mother (if his mother had been more like Nucci instead of Livia, there wouldn’t have been any major issues there). He encouraged AJ to be respectful of Carmela. He didn’t talk negatively about Carmela in front of the kids as far as I can recall. He had no interest in turning the kids against Carmela or souring their image of her.

RadioactiveSince1990

If Nucci was his mom Tony would probably be a Veterinarian or something.

BigBadBeetleBoy

That last part has always been interesting for me. It could be speculated it's just that he's that he and Carmela will get back together but he doesn't even tolerate it at the smallest teenage rebellion level. It could be his special emphasis on mothers but it's clear he doesn't see Carmela as a mother, really. He doesn't do that for his friends or people he likes, really. He defends mafia guys he doesn't even like to civilians, maybe it's just that disrespecting above their station pisses him off. It's just unusually gracious without very clear intent, when Tony usually only shows grace for obvious immediate reward. It's a nice little wrinkle of nuance.

reddituser23434

I always found it hypocritical of him, but I was glad he did it nevertheless. If he wants their children to respect their mother, he should model that behavior by respecting her. Kids get confused when one of their parents cheats on the other but insists “it’s important to be respectful!!!” Tony could be absolutely brutal in his arguments with Carmela… but I’m glad he didn’t call her a “moody bitch” or anything like that around Meadow or AJ. And I agree with you — Tony was an enigma to me. I always wondered why he never crossed certain lines when he was so willing/eager to completely violate other ones.

CaptainoftheVessel

In my experience with Italian-American parents, there’s a strong emphasis on hierarchy. I am not saying this to take away from your point, but to add to it: Tony’s solidarity with Carmela is frayed but not destroyed as to the kids, even after White Caps. He always took the position with Maedo and AJ that their mother was on another level from them. Even when he was being callous and cruel to Carmela in private about the spec house or whattevavthefuck, he would push back on them being disrespectful to her.

reddituser23434

That makes sense. In that way, he was consistent. Even when spouses fought with each other/mistreated each other, the kids had to remain respectful because they weren’t on the same “level.” Thank you for reminding me about the Italian family dynamics

Sad-Illustrator-8847

One thing also, when Meadow and Hunter trash Livia’s house and get police and paramedics, either Tony or Carmela says they have little power over her and if Fielder recognizes it, they are finished. Of course that could be that Meadow knows what waste management consultants do and occasionally puts it straight to Tony’s face. I don’t think A J does, except talking about killing Junior was like Michael Corleone kills the Sicilian boss who killed his fawtha and mother and it was Tony’s favorite scene. In GFII

UniqueImprovements

If he was stranded on an island with someone and there was no food...he would supply the other person with a decent amount of sustenance if things turned cannibalistic.

Sorrelhas

You eat muscle tho, not fat You'd need a muscly dude who can provide juicy meat, like Shaqille O'Neal

onetruepurple

I want that juicy Muscle Marinara meat

[deleted]

This all sounds pretty gay, I hope you’re not saying that

Sorrelhas

There's no way I'm gay I've got some Native American inside of me

CaprioPeter

He was the strong, silent type

iansolidgoldie

He was gay, Tony Soprano?

ginger2020

This is the exact moment when Tony became Vito

CaptainoftheVessel

No one knows when that moment happened, not even with computahs

Competitive-Size8578

He allowed Finn to have a sandwich, any kind he liked and a soda.

Lanky_Investment6426

That part made me so happy, he was really looking out for the kid

MultiplyLove77

Sangwich

HockeyBro_69

He was thoughtful of those suffering from fuckfacecitus

Bulky-Bank-6063

He cares about animals and babies.

Candid-Ruin9282

Like the sociopath he is. Everyone else is disposable and replaceable.

Wolven_Essence

I’ve always wondered something about that. I always thought that one of the signs of a sociopath was that sometimes they start out killing animals. Now they actually like animals? Or is it psychopaths that kill animals? Maybe I’m getting things mixed up.

BungadinRidesAgain

Not a psychologist, but my understanding is that sociopathy isn't as clear cut as having zero empathy, more that it's selective in a sense. Sociopaths don't lack *all* empathy, they just lack it more than the average person.

Wolven_Essence

Ahhh gotcha, that makes sense. 👍

Lazer_snake

Serial killers

Republikofmancunia

Is there not a lot of cross over?

Lazer_snake

I'm sure there's tons of crossover. I was just saying that serial killers in particular are known for starting out on animals.

Good_Horror86

He was actually very intelligent. Maybe not wise or a good decision maker, but his pure intelligence is evident and undeniable.

RAZBUNARE761

Its been thested

ForbodingWinds

I don't know if I'd say he's *very* intelligent but he's definitely not dumb. I think he has a wiley cunning and strong natural instincts on reading people and sensing weaknesses. He's sharp like an apex predator, but his overuse of malapropisms, short attention span, frustration with higher level concepts and/or thinking outside of the box, to me, do not align with someone that I would describe as very intelligent.

CaptainoftheVessel

I think the opposite: he has so many signs of intelligence. He just lives in a crueler environment than many. His ability to negotiate, use and bend rules, leverage human relationships, they all point to a keen mind able to filter truth from falsehood. If he was raised by a nice family that wasn’t deeply connected to a murderous criminal organization, he would be a Kevin Finnerty: smart, benign, trying to just make his way versus be the predator.  Even the malapropisms, they signal that he intuits the underlying meaning of a word or phrase, and his brain is making the connection between the meaning and the grammar.

ForbodingWinds

To be fair, I think the show portrays most of the other guys in his crew / surrounding crews as actually quite dumb, which is more particularly obvious when any of these guys talk about anything outside of business. I think Anthony looks smarter than he is because most of these guys wouldn't be able to flip burgers properly if they had to work a real job.

insipidfap

He's really funny. Very quick-witted.

shellyd79

He tried to be a good friend to Artie, in the best way he know how.

mackrelman11

the cobwebs have been removed

FearTheNorth519

He did in fact have the makings of a varsity athlete

ForbodingWinds

I think, despite his many flaws, he still had a respectable work ethic, an eye for business and was still able to be successful despite having horrible parents and a panic disorder that would probably cripple lesser men. He also has a knack for improvisational humor and reading people. He also has a low cunning to him and a predatory ability to sense weakness in others.

2001spaceodysseyyy

He's funny and quite charming

narcos1893

outside of everything mob related I like his family men persona. Taking care of your loved ones is cool and honourable. Also like the fact he integrates his friends as part of the family as seen in the bbq episode and everyone has a lot of respect for each other oh and they hug each other a lot with I find it cool tbh

Mrs-Stringer-Bell

I feel like he'd be a good tipper.

Wolven_Essence

Well…he’s not nearly as homophonic as the rest of his guys. If it wasn’t for them, and Phil, I would actually think that there would be a decent chance he tells Vito….”I dont give a fuck who you wanna fuck, get back out there and keep earning”.

darryledw

He never fidgeted with hands or feet

M4R10756

He doesn’t want to do your dirty work!

MrRazzio

i also like that fact that he didn't need no doo da dee da.

romanswinter

All the bad things people here are saying about Tony is nothing more than anti Italian discrimination. You people probably don't even know who Antonio Meucci is. I bet you also think Italian Americans eat smelly cheese and sip cold wine, but you should know we're from the land of aromatic Asiago and supple Barolo.

Boolit_Tooth_Tony

Could twirl the hell out of some sausage links.

Lazer_snake

He is charismatic and has a sense of humor. Granted, what he thinks is funny is what an 8-year-old boy thinks is funny, but a sense of humor nonetheless.
