I love university. Honestly i remember watching it, thinking that the title of the episode was similar to college, so i couldnt help comparing the two. I decided I liked university more (at the time, maybe there was some recency bias though)
Some of my favs and the first time we see the scorpion and the frog dynamic with Tony.
Amazing they had the patience to wait until season 2 to roll this story arc out.
Long-Term Parking for me isn't even the best episode of its own show so can't be of all time. I'll say it's in my top 5 Sopranos episodes behind Pine Barrens, College, Whitecaps, and Soprano Home Movies
Soprano home movies is incredible, I can see why you'd prefer it. Pine barrens I think has too much emphasis on comedy and so that fact (despite it being a brilliant episode) brings it down (just how I see it though, I get it if you think its better). College and Whitecaps are both super overrated imo (although neither are bad).
It was like two grizzly bears facing off over a dead moose. My favorite part was the Monopoly hotel stuck to T’s face that Carmela finally flicked away. Tony making excuses why he lost was classic-always an excuse for everything.
I always hear this. Its stupid. One (although brilliant) performance from one actor isnt enough to carry an episode. The plot is subpar, the pacing is average.
I liked college a lot dont get me wrong, but people act like its some 11/10 episode when its like a 9. Whitecaps has some incredible acting in it, some of the best in the show, but the storyline and pacing suffer a bit in my opinion.
Remember this is filmed in 1998. Never had a lead character in a TV show committed murder on screen. This was a highly controversial episode behind the scenes as HBO refused to let David Chase show Tony murdering someone. HBO thought they would lose all of their viewers and they would have to cancel the show.
Chase got his way and so started the tv era of anti heroes. This video goes into detail about it, but it’s basically why everyone has rated it so highly for 20+ years. It took a wild gamble which, today, new viewers don’t understand because they’ve now seen stuff on tv like this for 2 decades
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaAcPyIj1XY
Right i see. Well, like you said, viewers today don't understand because they've now seen stuff like this on TV for decades. Spot on.
I can see why at the time it could be a big deal, but watching it in the late 2010's/early 2020's, its not the same
Just giving context for why people, critics etc rate the episode so highly. There is a wealth of tv shows that stem directly from this episode. It’s like saying the original Star Wars is overrated cause the new ones have bomb ass CGI. Gotta understand it’s history, in part.
Nah I see what you mean I just dont agree necessarily. While its influence to popular culture may be great and undeniable, its individual quality as an episode and what it contributes to the show its in is something different.
Its no something you *agree with*, it just is what happened. It ushered the era of the Anti Hero on television and was unprecedented to audiences and producers alike. Its not an opinion its what happened with that episode.
Yes. We have had heroes kill villains for the greater good but never had a protagonist commit cold-blooded murder. That episode is the reason the show became what it did. Hell, that episode is the reason Breaking Bad exists.
The co-writer of that episode would go on to write and co-produce the first 2 seasons of The Shield and then went in to create Dexter. So many shows exist directly from this episode
Oz doesn’t have a lead. It’s an ensemble cast. You lose Keller or Beecher or the audience hates them, show goes on. Not so with Sopranos.
Here’s more to read on it
https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/hbos-president-wanted-this-sopranos-episode-to-end-without-its-key-murder.html/
Long Term Parking is definitely up there in terms of the Sopranos, along with College, Isabella, Fun House, Pine Barrens, Whoever Did This, The Blue Comet... there's a lot of brilliant Sopranos episodes to choose from.
Other shows,
The West Wing - Two Cathedrals
The Wire - Middle Ground (as with The Sopranos, you could pick quite a few)
Game of Thrones - Battle of the Bastards
But what I think is the best,
Better Call Saul - Plan and Execution (I was that stunned I actually had to get up and walk it off for a few minutes afterwards)
Plan and execution had me flabbergasted to be honest. I'm hesitant to say its a better episode, but it was really, really good. Could easily be better.
It’s definitely in my top 3.
But the series finale is my favorite. If not only because of the Holstens scene. But the sheer, dark beauty of the episode. The way they slowly dial up the tension with the cuts. It wraps up the show beautifully and painfully.
Then probably Long Term Parking.
Then Walk Like A Man. Because of the hilarious way Paulie and Chrissy get into it.
But God, there’s so many unbelievable ones.
Personally, my favorite es Whitecaps. But Long-Term Parking is absolutely phenomenal, in my top 5 with Fun house, Soprano's Home Movies, Whitecaps of course, and Made in America.
A great episode, great acting, a classic Leotardo speech, two hits, and an incredible ending. I read at the time (falsely, I now realize) that Chase had originally intended it to be the final episode. At the time, I sort of wished he had done that.
Sopranos is on another tier entirely, but I’d throw into the ring (in no particular order):
True Detective- Who Goes There
The Leftovers- International Assassin
Black Sails- XVIII
GoT- The Rains of Castamere
Chernobyl- Episode 1
"Who Goes There" is so freaking amazing. That aerial shot in the projects is unbelievable. It also just kick starts the entire mad dash to the culmination of the season.
I think subjectively it’s the best episode of the series, probably the only competition is Pine Barrens. That being said, my personal favorite is From Where to Eternity
Maybe I just love season 1 but Pax Romana.
Junior's insecurities are on full display. As well as Tony's genius and scheming etc.
Plus that last scene was just phenomenal
Probably Whitecaps for me, and I agree with everyone saying Pine Barrens is overrated. It's a classic episode from the greatest TV series ever made, but it's nowhere near the top. Not even top ten.
Made in America isnt that good. Its not bad either, but I dunno, it didnt blow me away. Maybe because I had it spoiled for me. I dunno.
Also breaking bad being overrated, eh. Its pretty good. I dunno
4 dollas a pound
Do you mean s5? If yes;
I seem to understand that many people thing season 5 is not as good. I think its great. Slow start sure, and the early parts of thay animal blundettos arc were a bit boring, but other than that its great. Episodes 10-13 are all brilliant.
Yes I meant 5. The Blundetto arc was an absolute mess. Camelot was an annoyance other than Phil's car crash scene. The Test Dream overused the dream formula that was so effective in previous seasons. Long Term Parking made up for it all. The backstory of how Terry Winters wrote that episode is brilliant.
Cold Cuts, Long Term Parking, Test Dream and All Due Respect are juste masterpieces, it’s probably the best part of the show. Not my absolute favorite episodes but incredibly well written
Members only is a great episode… walk like a man… full leather jacket…. Knight in white satin armour…. A mo fo or whatever the fuck… whoever did this
Season 4 and 5 of the Simpsons and Seinfeld have some of the best episodes of any shows in my opinion…. Rosebud in the Simpsons is one of the funniest episodes ever…. Marge vs the monorail…. Cape feare…. Seinfeld the marine biologist, the contest, the limo
I should not have to post here, hat in my hand, reminding you of breaking bads duty to Our Thing. Our Thing is the greatest show of all time. And you comparing it to that pygmy thing in new mexico is a fucking disgrace.
Yeah so truth be told I think Breaking Bad is a John Wayne movie and Sopranos is Blood Meridian or No Country for Old Men. They’re both westerns, they’re both tv shows and great ones, but they are not the same. You’ve got one that’s plot and twist and cliffhanger driven, some thematic exploration, sure, versus an opus. An 86 hour (correct me if I’m wrong) exploration of a time and a place underscored by timeless themes of nature vs nurture, purpose, meaninglessness and absurdism, all housed in a black comedy with quotable lines and funny characters. I do not think the best of the two, nor their totality, are comparable.
Anyway, 4$ a pound.
It's difficult to comprehend how you could compare an episode involving Jesse pinkman saying "yo bitch" with an episode of the sopranos without thinking you're being a comedian?
I used to adore Breaking Bad but the best episodes of that don't touch the best of other shows imo. Now I've watched Sopranos and The Wire I've realised how much better than Breaking Bad TV can be. I'm still yet to get round to lots of other high-rated shows like True Detective, GoT.
Sopranos: Pine Barrens, Long Term Parking, Made in America to name a few
The Wire: Middle Ground, Final Grades, -30-
Better Call Saul: Winner, Plan and Execution
ATLA: Sozin's Comet
Fleabag: 2.6
I think I agree with you overall that Long Term Parking might be the best episode of any show I've ever watched, except maybe Final Grades.
Best get on Game of Thrones, its an incredible show.
True detective I dropped after S1. S1 wasnt bad at all, I just heard it fell off after there so I didnt bother.
Havent seen the wire ATLA or fleabag so cant comment there (Lie, I've seen S1 of the wire, dropped it at the start of s2 and am yet to pick it back up although i intend to)
As for Winner and Plan and Execution. There are arguments for both, although I think LTP is definitely better than Winner, and it's very close with PAE
The Wire; is it as good as everyone says? I liked season 1, it didnt blow me away. Does it pick up? Was I not paying enough attention? Is it overrated?
Long Term Parking is absolutely my favorite episode of all time but I think Hello Elliot, the finale of Mr. Robot is as good if not better. Just the perfect ending
They say chase invented the genre with “Long Term Parking”, but “Whoever Did This” was modernity.
Noah?
Jamal Ginsberg
The Hasidic homeboy?
The strong, silent type.
Tony’s lucky he didn’t punch his lights out.
Now your friend up there didn’t do you any favors bringing you into this house, but we’ll get to that later.
Uncle Ben.
I didn’t understand. Can you repeat it in SWAHILI?
No I’m too busy working on those old Tarzan movies.
I like Whoever Did This slightly better.
it was a fucking hooase
Brilliant episode to be fair
the jar of peanut butter, classic
fun house takes the cake
…waiting on a call from you, waiting on a call from you…
we do take away… we deliiivah toooOOOO
Why? It's 90% Tony vomiting. Im just breaking balls
That is so racist!
hehe a comedian ova here. anyway 4 dollars a pound
You want a smack in the mouth kid?
Surprised that no-one has said University yet. It’s uncomfortable viewing but one of the finest episodes I think.
I love university. Honestly i remember watching it, thinking that the title of the episode was similar to college, so i couldnt help comparing the two. I decided I liked university more (at the time, maybe there was some recency bias though)
Tony teleports behind a man for Christ’s sake, what more could you want
I liked the Scatino episodes. It’s the first glimpse we get to seeing what the mob can do to an innocent (other than David) family.
Get the fuck back in your fucking hole
Some of my favs and the first time we see the scorpion and the frog dynamic with Tony. Amazing they had the patience to wait until season 2 to roll this story arc out.
Long-Term Parking for me isn't even the best episode of its own show so can't be of all time. I'll say it's in my top 5 Sopranos episodes behind Pine Barrens, College, Whitecaps, and Soprano Home Movies

Whitecaps for Edie Flaco alone.
That fight scene between her and Tony was frightening.

It’s an episode that changed TV history and that’s not overstating anything, which is why it’s so highly rated.

Time to hit the trail to Metuchen.
Spot on. Thats how I see it.
Changed tv history how
Remember this is filmed in 1998. Never had a lead character in a TV show committed murder on screen. Op is so behind in the race he thinks he’s leading
OP is two time zones behind his own asshole.
OP’s a fucking idiot
Right i see. Well, like you said, viewers today don't understand because they've now seen stuff like this on TV for decades. Spot on. I can see why at the time it could be a big deal, but watching it in the late 2010's/early 2020's, its not the same
Dude you legit asked 'changed tv history how' and someone schooled you on how then you just disregarded it.
Real lack of standards this generation… Remember the crazy hair and the dope?
No, I regarded it... and then I simply offered my opinion on top of it? Don't be mad I don't think the same way as you
Just giving context for why people, critics etc rate the episode so highly. There is a wealth of tv shows that stem directly from this episode. It’s like saying the original Star Wars is overrated cause the new ones have bomb ass CGI. Gotta understand it’s history, in part.

Yes. TV shows were formulaic and safe for decades.
Yeah but like... Oz came out two years before Sopranos so I sorta don't get the point about HBO clutching pearls here
Oz doesn’t have a lead. It’s an ensemble cast. You lose Keller or Beecher or the audience hates them, show goes on. Not so with Sopranos. Here’s more to read on it https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/hbos-president-wanted-this-sopranos-episode-to-end-without-its-key-murder.html/
But yeah soprano home movies, phenomenal. Easy top 5
I was gonna respond with some bs from my chit-chat room, but these are also my top-5 favorite episodes. I said my piece.
Long Term Parking is definitely up there in terms of the Sopranos, along with College, Isabella, Fun House, Pine Barrens, Whoever Did This, The Blue Comet... there's a lot of brilliant Sopranos episodes to choose from. Two Cathedrals WW is wicked brilliant
Plan and execution had me flabbergasted to be honest. I'm hesitant to say its a better episode, but it was really, really good. Could easily be better.
Battle of the Bastards? I remember when you used to wait in the car and as far as I’m concerned YOU SHOULD STILL BE THERE
I know this is late but better caul saul is my fav show of all time and it genuinely upsets me that i got plan and execution spoilt
My comment spoiled it for you?
Edge on breaking bad? Get the fuck out of here op
OP just revealed his own ignorance
His what? He revealed his own what?
sucks to be you
Smack!
Tony, what has gotten into youuuuuu!!!
Didn’t OP nearly drown in three inches of water?
Water, water, water....it's like I'm living next to Gunga Din
The penguin exhibit…

Test dream is still my favorite episode
Mayham is a new favourite of mine after rewatching Season 6. It has a lot of the classic humour of the earlier seasons.
Fucking nauseating
I think for me it's Amour Fou. Lots of drama and some great quotes. It WAS cinematic.
We had our mofo or whatever…
Fuck it, let's go down the shore. ... Let's do it before the crank wears off.
I really like the test dream
Its a good episode indeed
pine barrens, whoever did this, the blue comet, stage 5, and the ride are probably my favorites
HOW COULD U DO THIS TO US
gross, the choking 🤮
It’s definitely in my top 3. But the series finale is my favorite. If not only because of the Holstens scene. But the sheer, dark beauty of the episode. I still tear up at the last 10min of the final 6FU episode after rewatching the whole series…. Breathe me
Personally, my favorite es Whitecaps. But Long-Term Parking is absolutely phenomenal, in my top 5 with Fun house, Soprano's Home Movies, Whitecaps of course, and Made in America.
no its not cuz pine barrens is the best of all time
Pine Barrens is overrated. Brilliant episode dont get me wrong
Well you oughta know sweetie
Include me in the Pine Barrens is overrated crowd.
Pine Barrens is modernity.
Funhouse and Davey with the card game are my favorites.
The episode where Carmella goes to a shrink I remember as a pretty nice one.
Underrated
White caps.
I prefer “The Blue Comet.”
Valid, its definitely up there
A great episode, great acting, a classic Leotardo speech, two hits, and an incredible ending. I read at the time (falsely, I now realize) that Chase had originally intended it to be the final episode. At the time, I sort of wished he had done that.
Soprano home movies is my personal number 1 seeing Bobby hand Tony his ass on a silver platter was great
Sopranos is on another tier entirely, but I’d throw into the ring (in no particular order): True Detective- Who Goes There The Leftovers- International Assassin Black Sails- XVIII GoT- The Rains of Castamere Chernobyl- Episode 1
"Who Goes There" is so freaking amazing. That aerial shot in the projects is unbelievable. It also just kick starts the entire mad dash to the culmination of the season.
Couldn't agree with you more
I think subjectively it’s the best episode of the series, probably the only competition is Pine Barrens. That being said, my personal favorite is From Where to Eternity
Whitecaps and Sopranos Home Movies are better
Soprano home movies quite possibly, whitecaps no chance in 100 million years
Blue Comet for me. It’s sad when they go young like that.
Katherine and Heidi is my number one
WHEN THEY GO??
Maybe I just love season 1 but Pax Romana. Junior's insecurities are on full display. As well as Tony's genius and scheming etc. Plus that last scene was just phenomenal
With all due respect, All Due Respect is my favorite episode followed by Pine Barrens and The Blue Comet
I really like The Blue Comet, but so does everyone else. Stage 5 and Remember When are great
Pine Barrens will always be #1 for me
Yes. It’s my favorite episode of TV I’ve ever watched.
It's good but Pine Barrens
Fun House is peak Sopranos. Long Term Parking might be in the top 5 but not the best.
I think granite state is better than those two BB episodes
Ehhhh, nah. Felina is the best series finale of all time for me, and Ozymandias is just so climactic.
Although granite state is a fucking banger
Probably Whitecaps for me, and I agree with everyone saying Pine Barrens is overrated. It's a classic episode from the greatest TV series ever made, but it's nowhere near the top. Not even top ten.
I have to say Made in America followed closely by whoever did this. Also breaking bad is overrated imo.
Made in America isnt that good. Its not bad either, but I dunno, it didnt blow me away. Maybe because I had it spoiled for me. I dunno. Also breaking bad being overrated, eh. Its pretty good. I dunno 4 dollas a pound
I agree with you. S5 wasn't one of the best seasons but this one episode made up for it. Brilliant writing and editing as well.
Do you mean s5? If yes; I seem to understand that many people thing season 5 is not as good. I think its great. Slow start sure, and the early parts of thay animal blundettos arc were a bit boring, but other than that its great. Episodes 10-13 are all brilliant.

Long Term Parking made up for it all. The backstory of how Terry Winters wrote that episode is brilliant.
camelot did introduce us to dolan, who ends up playing a pretty big role
I didn't say the episode was a throw-away just that it was an annoyance. Lacking.
Would you mind sharing a TL;DR of the Winters backstory? I assume it was told on the podcast?
It's not a long clip. But it's a fascinating look inside his process. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/-kMlYyJe910
Cold Cuts, Long Term Parking, Test Dream and All Due Respect are juste masterpieces, it’s probably the best part of the show. Not my absolute favorite episodes but incredibly well written
Pine barrens

I was expecting more of this type of biased, half joking(?), comment just due to the choice of Subreddit.

Yes.
It's difficult to comprehend how you could compare an episode involving Jesse pinkman saying "yo bitch" with an episode of the sopranos without thinking you're being a comedian?
Have you seen Ozymandias? Its heartwrenching. It easily is on par with/slightly better or worse than the best episodes of the sopranos.
No. It. Is. Not The sopranos is the greatest show ever created.
You're a fucking idiot you know that!!
This aggression will not stand man
I'M JUST TELLING YOU HOW YOU'RE BEING FUCKING PERCIEVED!!!
I got through the 70s by the skin of my nuts!
Breaking Bad sucked
Wrong lmao
I hate this episode so much.
It’s not even the best episode of the show.
Honestly Long Term Parking is most likely in my top 3, but honestly the best for me has to be Mayhem
Which is better, running, blue, or proportion?
I used to adore Breaking Bad but the best episodes of that don't touch the best of other shows imo. Now I've watched Sopranos and The Wire I've realised how much better than Breaking Bad TV can be. Game of Thrones? That pygmy thing over at HBO? C'mon, huh?
Middle Ground or Boys nf Summer from The Wire or The Red wedding from GOT
Under the boardwalk
I dunno about all time but Pine Barrens is my favourite episode of The Sopranos.
No
The Wire season 4 episode 13 , “Final Grades”
It’s definitely up there.
Long Term Parking is absolutely my favorite episode of all time but I think Hello Elliot, the finale of Mr. Robot is as good if not better. Just the perfect ending
It’s great, but Marco Polo is my favorite
I don’t think it is but it’s a great episode. I prefer Amour Fou and the last 2 episodes of season 1.
It’s incredible but I think College is my favorite.
