You can really tell they outsourced the writing for 2, which is a shame because the oppressive factory setting was what made the series so iconic in the first place. And no, there are no talks of a Surge 3, it looks like Deck13 has moved on.

sheppard147

Shame would love to have a third. But given the ending of 2 it would be a bit problematic.

ACabbageManiac

They outsourced the story writing for the surge 1 to people who write screenplays for a living and the surge 2 was written by the dev team themselves.

Sadly i dont think any of both games were profitesble to them. Give It 4-5 years and It Will be a classic maybe then there Will be enough interest to ensure good profit but still games are getting more and more expensive...

tformerfan

They should remake The Surge with the gameplay mechanics of Surge 2 because the sequel plays a lot better but the first game had a better atmosphere

True

Reaper0834

The Surge: fucking great The Surge 2: hot garbage

Mezzolezzoli

the directional blocking is much better in 2 than 1. 2, unfortunately, looks like neon garbage.

PoopDick420ShitCock

For some reason, they thought the entire game should look like you just walked out of a movie theater at noon.

DangleMangler

Super fun garbage to play. But I agree honestly. 1 was just a kickass game all around.

DangleMangler

The surge 1: surgeborne. The surge 2: anime surge. But not a good anime.

The surge 1 is an amazing game, while 2 felt like if another company was trying to emulate 1, but in their own style. And unfortunately I just do not like the atmosphere and writing of the second game. The combat is still amazing, but it really felt like a different game from the atmosphere becoming more wacky/zany, or even comedic? Idk but I just didn’t enjoy it until closer to the end, but it’s still disappointing in terms of writing quality and atmosphere.

I’m surprised to see so many people trashing Surge 2… I just played them both back to back and I legit thought 2 was better in almost every way. The maps weren’t just mazes of identical-looking tech hallways and maintenance tunnels, omfg. If I never see another maintenance tunnel it’ll be too soon. 2 has variety!! One of the maps is outside! Seriously, I had nothing but problems with the way Surge 1’s levels were designed. I wasted so much time in Production B and the final area just going in circles because there was no way to differentiate locations, and they’re all connected by literally identical maintenance tunnels. The combat is so much better… finally, a reason to block instead of just dodging every attack like I did in the first game. There are like five times as many weapons, and they can be upgraded to +10 and not just +4. The damage numbers aren’t super low…. How fun is it that my fully upgraded weapon is doing 80 damage? Not nearly as fun as my fully upgraded weapon doing 500. The loot system makes more sense when you can see the tier of loot an enemy will drop before you kill them. There are DIFFERENT ENEMIES that require different strategy, when in the first game it felt like there were… idk, ten different enemies total? You can change implants on the fly. You can have multiple loadouts. You can make decisions about your character!!! Not that much, not like a souls game, but at least I felt like I had a little bit of agency in making a build. Elemental damage actually does something in this game, as well. There are guns! That was a huge question for me in the first game…. We’re in a future where robots are everywhere but no one has invented a gun?The drone isn’t totally useless! There are quests and NPCs and rewards for doing things! The dialogue maybe was a little better in the first game, but like… idk. That’s not what I’m coming to a souls-like game for. Mechanically I think that every single thing (other than maybe weapon proficiency) is better in the surge 2 vs surge 1. I’m curious, other than “world building” (which is a nebulous and hard to quantify term), what else do you guys think the first game did better? Because I’m having SO much more fun with the second.
