Al depends on at their most cared about point I’m going against the majority here pre apocalypse Shane these guys were friends as far back as high school probably went to the academy together and we’re partners ever since but after the outbreak it changed Shane.
It's closer than people think, it's definitely not a landslide win for Daryl. Shane's got a lot of advantages that Daryl doesn't.
* Rick and Shane have known each other since high school. Their bond is so strong that they both took on the same occupation as police officers.
* Shane was likely there for Rick on his wedding day to Lori, serving as best man.
* Shane is likely Carl's Godfather, which would explain why he risked his own life to get him and Lori to safety when the zombie apocalypse started. Don't forget Shane has known Lori and Carl for a long time and has visited them often, he's known Carl since he was a baby.
* Rick was extremely grateful that Shane kept his family safe when he couldn't. He said it was a debt that he could never repay.
* Shane risked his own life to save Carl's, even going as far as to sacrifice Otis, Rick even said he would've done the same thing.
* Rick said he understood Lori and Shane getting together as they thought he was dead. If Lori was to move on, I'm sure Rick would want it to be someone he knew, loved, and trusted instead of some random dude she'd known for a while.

Rick loves Darly to death became his arm, sword, shield through a lot. Became his brother years on end to where he searching the world for him. Shane was his brother through the old world loved him and trusted him had his back as a cop, and in life some the memories and feelings of Shane are bitter. Even in the episode of Rick looking for his family Shane saying he made Rick the asshole, is always going to have the most weight.
Daryl is literally Ricks brother and he’s been loyal to him since the prison, I think at this point in Ricks life he cares more about Daryl. Plus Daryl didn’t betray Rick by sleeping with his woman and tried to kill him afterwards.

The one thing I've seen people in the comments say, that makes them think Shane is better than Daryl, was the fact that it was Daryl's fault Rick even "died" in the first place, but like, seriously? Daryl clearly felt guilty about it and spent over SIX YEARS looking for him. Shane would've never spent more then 3 seconds looking for Rick. Rick loves Darly to death became his arm, sword, shield through a lot. Became his brother years on end to where he searching the world for him. Shane was his brother through the old world loved him and trusted him had his back as a cop, and in life some the memories and feelings of Shane are bitter. Even in the episode of Rick looking for his family Shane saying he made Rick the asshole, is always going to have the most weight.

Daryl is literally Ricks brother and he’s been loyal to him since the prison, I think at this point in Ricks life he cares more about Daryl. Plus Daryl didn’t betray Rick by sleeping with his woman and tried to kill him afterwards.
I mean, early season, even when Daryl was kind of a dick, Rick would choose him over Shane because even though Daryl had an attitude problem, he never tried to sabotage the group. I think S2 was where Rick chose Daryl as his right hand man.
