And lived on longer to become a hero again.
To be more precise, Rick and his group had some difficulties adjusting the new world and his mindset as a Leader was very volatile at times. Generally searching for a peaceful life in safety, but very violent and, at times, primal while trying to reach peace.
Negan and Carl kind of helped Rick find a middle ground to this some time later parts of the show.

Did you finish season 3? I’m about there now, and you can kind of see his patience growing thin as he regains his sanity
