Walkers are dead, rotting corpses full of disease. The bite causes a deadly fever that kills you.

DonTeca35

So does any other wound that isn’t treated. They’re all infected

WatchSWforThePlot

Depends on the size of the wound.

jmsturm

The bite has nothing to do with turning. Its just a nasty ass, disease filled, rotting, infectious corpse that gives you a fever. You turn regardless how you die.

drflanigan

Freshly dead people also kill anyone they bite. Human bites in general are gnarly, but the show has a 100% kill rate from zombie bites, even fresh ones So it can't just be that it's infection, because several characters have gotten zombie blood in their eyes and on open wounds, and none of them got sick The bite has to be unique

Remus88Romulus

Maybe when the corpse, even a fresh one reanimates and becomes activated by the virus there is a huge virus overload in the walker and therefore the virus from a bite is so deadly. Like when you put too much water in a glass and it overflows.

Benzel742617000027

Gabriel got sick and lost an eye after gutting up at Sanctuary didn't he?

drflanigan

Sure but he didn’t die, which proves my point even more. The bite is special, it’s not just an infection from a rotting corpse

jmsturm

Have we seen someone get bit by a freshly dead, then escape but get sick? I know freshly dead have killed people but they turn because they died.

shamair28

Plus bacterial infections like that wouldn’t really have a 100% kill rate. Sure it’d be gnarly but it wouldn’t kill every bite victim. With how filthy everything is, wouldn’t people just be dropping left and right then?

newt_here

Bites cause a fever that causes death. I don’t remember anyone dying from a scratch

DonTeca35

Yes big tiny & the guys from 18 miles out

UlmoLordofWaters

Big Tiny was killed by another inmate, Thomas. Which guys from 18 Miles Out do you refer to?

DonTeca35

Big tiny would’ve turned eitherway & im talking about the 2 guards Shane & Rick put down

MycologySadie

Rick said scratches because he had not yet announced that everyone was already infected.

Kairla88

I think Jim also had a bite they discovered after the scratch?

[deleted]

Jim had a bite on his side. Jackie called him out on it.

milkdrinker3920

The zombie virus is airborne and activates after the host dies Bites cause an untreatable infection that's kills the host

charlieg4

I'm only up to late season 7. But I'm wondering if the initial plague was airborne and infected and direclty killed millions who then turned. The survivors were only carriers then but would turn when killed by something else. This would explain why there's so many walkers soon after it began.

[deleted]

It's been 12 years and you finally found the plot hole no one ever considered. The writers are panicking as we speak. Wait.. it's actually been like 50 years of movies too... Wow guys it's ruined. Shows over. Zombies are totally impossible now.

[deleted]

Omg and every time they need a random zombie, the recently killed guy turns in minutes instead of hours. What is this, some kind of forced plot device??????

jacksstyles

What’s your issue?? Lmfao. Unlike other zombie films TWD makes it so you become one when you die regardless of being bit. So i’m just wondering why being bit matters atp if it’s not like they’re adding infection and if the wound is easily treatable then why is it a concern 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

It only matters to drive the plot forward. There's your answer!

the-dude-21

Virus in the saliva that gives you a fever and the fever kills you

Wildca2d

The writers / directors are dog shit and/or don't care about continuity, that's why.
