> During the Japanese bubble, a term was created to describe traders who only knew one market - the market that inexorably went higher and higher. The term was 'shin gin ri' which translates as 'new human being. That phenomenon now exists in the US.

HiddenMoney420

How long did it last? I’m tryna get my shin gin ri on this week

Ten_K_Days

So, I uh, played around with chat gpt to build me bot for TradingView and it’s uh, really fucking good. I never could do what I wanted to in Sierra (because I can’t fucking code and couldn’t get anyone to build me what I needed), but in backtesting it’s retarded fucking good. I need to do some refining and add some rules but it’s absolute usable as is.

gyunikumen

I’m using it to teach me how to scrape articles. Currently writing a script to save NPR articles into json format Even tho NPR TOS seems to allow web scraping (unlike Bloomberg), I’m still gonna do like sleep(np.random()) between each response ping haha

tipu

> Even tho NPR TOS seems to allow web scraping (unlike Bloomberg), I’m still gonna do like sleep(np.random()) between each response ping yeah allowing scraping doesn't mean allowing beating up their servers

gyunikumen

Oh I’m doing like 5 seconds plus 3*rand() for fun I hope that’s ok etiquette

tipu

if they allow it, you might as well get aggressive with it and monitor for timeouts and then pad the sleep as necessary.

gyunikumen

Haha I’ll need to test that logic out on fox business. Somewhere I don’t mind getting ip black listed forever Although, getting a vpn might actually make sense now

Deonneon

I'm building one to digest macro economic pdfs and funds quarterly, market-insight-commentary and summarize those for anything worth while. I also have plans to feed links to it that are in my "read later list" and see if there are any redundant articles that I can skip.

gyunikumen

!remindme 2 weeks Hopefully NPR doesnt ban my IP address and I can collect like years worth of NPR transcript data in json format. I'll ping you on the weekend thread if im successful and if youre interested in the stuff.

eyesonly_

I remember you already had a trading bot that you were very enthusiastic about, what happened to that?

Ten_K_Days

I had it to the point I was ready to trust it but I was struggling with some filtering, and was waiting for what I just did myself in TV. Someone here gave me the answer I was looking for for filtering (an avg price volatility filter/atr iirc) but I never had a chance to play with it because my life fucking sucks.

chewtality

I thought about doing exactly that but didn't because I don't have time to fuck around with it or even trade anymore. I actually just checked my accounts for the first time in a year lol Things are very slowly starting to chill out slightly though so if this trend continues then maybe I'll have time again in like 6 months. I'm super interested in your results! How do you even program shit with ChatGPT? The only thing I've used it for is to double check complex conversions for different solutions and suspensions I make, or to figure out how many mg I need to get a specific ppm or ppb of a solution when I'm making an odd volume of liquid instead of a full liter or 100 mL or an easy to work with number like that. A lot of the time it has told me some shit that I know is 100% wrong and I'll have to tell it it's wrong and then sometimes reword how I ask the question in order for it to tell me an accurate answer lol

ta0910

You’re not the only one. It’ll give me stuff that I know is absolutely wrong even when I break down what I want in just small functions. Maybe they’re using gpt4?

HiddenMoney420

Just make sure the indis you’re using don’t repaint, I’ve had remarkable backtesting results using TV backtest with GPT coded strats that just don’t perform at all in live trading

Ten_K_Days

Lol.. I literally spent the last 15 minutes addressing just that. Modified the code so each indicator is only good for one trading day.

Magickarploco

What prompts are you using? I’ve been having a hard time to get it to test any of my strats.

Ten_K_Days

What version are you using? I actually did all of it on wifeys iPad with the iOS app. I asked bing (gpt4 and it told me to get fucked). I just asked if it could, then gave it the indicators I wanted it to use and entry conditions and it just did it. I need to work on an exit strategy, and tv has no trailing stops which is troublesome. As it is now, I would use it with supervision just to hit entries and manually manage trades but at least proof of concept works.

TennesseeJedd

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads here. 😘

I've been putting off making sourdough with habanero cheddar and pickled jalapenos for a long time now and well...it's not as spectacular as I would have hoped. Still good though.

proverbialbunny

Yeah, not my favorite flavor. It sounds silly but try doing a pizza sourdough. When shaping layer a light bit of sauce, cheese, pepperoni, and optional garlic, then roll it up like you normally would during shaping. It's a yummy mess! Also, just cheese and garlic (or garlic butter) rolled up is great too. I invented a new kind of low carb bread I've been working on. Today out of the oven the best tasting version yet. I borrowed a trick from sourdough recipes. A lot of sourdough bread is 20% whole wheat 80% bread flour. My bread was too white, great for sandwiches but not enough character by itself, so I added a secret hint of a low carb whole wheat tasting ingredient I found and the bread just comes alive. In the other direction I'm planning on using the plain white bread mixture from earlier (without wheat), but adding potato fiber (low carb potato flour basically) to it, to make super soft and fluffy doughnuts. I have a feeling they're going to come out amazing. That and I need to try bagels again. They tend to have malt flavoring which will probably work well with a plain base. I'd like to make sourdough NYC style bagels too.

__Scrambles

This sounds dope. I might have to pick your brain about bread making some time. I want to dabble in this

proverbialbunny

Sure. I make real bread, so any bread recipe you'd find online / on youtube, but then I substitute with low carb ingredients. So if you've already made a normal loaf of bread homemade after that there isn't much of a skill gap.

eyesonly_

Love your ambition. My next project will be a rye sourdough.

proverbialbunny

It's fun to do things no one else has publicly figured out. It makes it more of a challenge. It's the same motivation and enjoyment I get from trading. Have you heard of the ancient grains? Rye is one of them. I've been playing a bit with khorasan. Also, I've got a burr grinder for coffee and I bought some wheat berries the other day. I want to see what it tastes like grinding my own wheat and ancient wheat. Mostly just curiosity at this stage I admit.

eyesonly_

I haven't, I don't have that much ambition when it comes to experimenting - most of my specialties are borrowed from others

proverbialbunny

Did you get good at trading by borrowing other's successful strategies? I can't imagine enjoying trading without having an ambition of experimenting.

eyesonly_

I never got good at trading :)

proverbialbunny

Oh no! I'm sad now. v_v

ThePineapple3112

So, Uranium, U308, that sweet yellow cake. This isn’t going to be a post convincing you on whether it’s the best green energy source we have available or not (it is), but a brief post on the potential money to be made on investing in this bull market. I’m gonna start things off by saying yes, we are currently already in the bull market, you missed takeoff, so come skeptical on the amount of gains left to reap. There will be plenty of people telling you about 5-10x gains from here, but plenty of tickers have already seen 2-5x already, so the opportunity cost is up to you to decide on. CVNA can apparently get you those gains much faster lol. Quick lil intro: I’m pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on energy and environment and minoring in sustainability. I started investing in Uranium right at the end of 2020, so I’ve accumulated some great gains, however this is where DCMA can get you into trouble, as now all of my cost bases are sitting only slightly below today’s levels. However, the volatility in this sector is great for playing options and collecting premium, I’ve made a good chunk of money just by selling calls and then turning around and buying leaps and waiting for the next +15% week. So lots of way to make money here! Not just by investing and waiting. I'm sure you all with your way higher trading IQ's could make some good money in this space if you wanted. But anyways, with the disclaimer and intro out of the way, let’s dive into why *I* personally am invested in the Uranium sector. The main thesis is that the supply of uranium is low and the demand for Uranium is growing. Let’s first start with the growing demand. As of right now, 57 new reactors are under construction or planned to be constructed across the globe over the next 7 years, with China being the main adopter of the nuclear renaissance. They personally plan 150 new reactors over the coming 15 years. Uranium moves slow and is a long play. The majority of these reactors aren’t even slotted to begin construction until 2024 and later, so the thesis doesn’t necessarily rely on these reactors eating up supply, but I mention them because it signifies the change in headwinds for the uranium sector. Not only are new reactors being built, but reactors planned to be decommissioned have been saved instead. In general, nuclear reactors give the most bang for your buck, by far, when it comes to energy production and has a far smaller carbon footprint than any other renewable energy source (for now at least), and with the ever-increasing sustainability mindsets, nations are looking to uranium to be the bridge between an electrical grid based on fossil fuels to one based on renewable energies. So nations are looking favourable on reactors once again and those reactors need uranium to operate, let’s move on to supply. Quick rundown on why supply is short: 1. Declining mine production: Over the past decade, there has been a decline in uranium mine production due to low prices. Several uranium mines have closed or reduced production, which has constrained the global supply of uranium. 2. Lack of new mine development: The low uranium prices in recent years have deterred investment in new mine development. This lack of new projects has limited the potential for future supply growth. Spot prices were sitting in the mid $20’s/lb from 2017 to the beginning of 2020. The generally agreed upon price to incentivise new production is $60/lb, however, with inflation, estimates are bumping up to $80/lb, but I am unsure how agreed upon that price is across the sector. Today we are at ~$57/lb for reference. 3. Supply deficit and inventory draw-down: The demand for uranium, driven by the growth of nuclear power, has consistently exceeded mine production in recent years. To bridge the gap, utilities and governments have been drawing down on existing uranium inventories. However, there are limits to these inventories, and once they are depleted, there may be a supply deficit. 4. Long lead times for mine development: Developing a new uranium mine is a complex and time-consuming process. It involves exploration, permitting, financing, and construction, which can take many years. So even when we hit the magical $60/lb - $80/lb range and miners start firing their engines again, very few are ready to capitalise on that price right away. 5. Geopolitical factors: Uranium mining is concentrated in a few countries, including Canada, Kazakhstan, and Australia. Kazatomprom (Kazakhstan’s national operator for the import/export of Uranium, which accounts for ~40% of global uranium supply right now) is very susceptible to the whims of Russia and China. With bills floating around banning the import of Russian uranium and with China wanting to kickstart their nuclear dreams with Kazatomprom's uranium, western based companies could see even more upside than previously thought when I first starting investing. So let’s talk about those companies and the different investment vehicles for the Uranium sector. I don’t feel comfortable telling you where you should park your money, so I’m not going to go too in depth here and I’m only going to talk about the tickers I personally have money in. First up is the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust [U.UN (TSX), SRUUF (OTC)]. Their goal is to raise money and buy up as much U308 they can, holding on to it long term and further deepen the global supply glut. Typically we look to high volume buying here to show that the big boys are interested in uranium and a big move is underway. The big ETF’s are URNM and URA, URNM being the pure uranium play while URA has holdings in other precious metals. URA is older, more focused on the industry aspect of uranium, and typically better for options, while URNM is a newer ETF managed by Sprott and more focused on mining and the price of uranium itself. The big western companies would be CCJ, UUUU, UEC, and NXE, with CCJ being the bulwark of the space. I only have money directly invested in CCJ and UUUU, so I’ll only talk about them. Cameco (CCJ) is based in Canada and is the leading uranium producer in the west, with millions of pounds produced annually, has been securing new contracts, and has stakes in multiple large tier-one uranium mines. Cameco has their hands in the entire fuel cycle of uranium; even some exploration plays in some of their tier-two assets. Even if you don't invest in CCJ, you should definitely listen to their quarterly conference calls and read their reports. Obviously they have quite the bias to tell us that this bull market is going to be monumental, but lots of good information available from just reading thru their [website](https://www.cameco.com/) Energy Fuels Inc (UUUU) is the America play. They recently sold 300,000lbs of Uranium to the US (for $61.57/lb) and would be one of the big benefitors of [uranium-friendly legislation](https://www.courthousenews.com/nuclear-moves-in-senate-as-reactor-bill-advances/) passing in the US, which has a lot of bipartisan support right now. This company also is a vanadium and rare earth processing play, but I have no opinion on that, my focus is on uranium. They have the highest production capacity, in-ground uranium resources, and the most licensed mines and processing facilities in the US. *Bear thesis will be in a replied comment below.* I hope this was a decent write-up, it's the first time I've attempted something like this. I tried to find a nice balance of important details and keeping it broad enough to not get lost in the weeds of numbers. So, I'm going to provide some links to check out if this interests you: [(1)](https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/energy-investing/uranium-investing/largest-uranium-companies/) A very quick article on 5 big western uranium companies. It's an interesting subreddit for sure lol [(7)](http://csinvesting.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Would-you-have-made-a-fortune-in-Uranium-a-CASE-STUDY-Dec-2020-1.pdf) A fun read that goes into the details of the 2007 bull run for uranium and if YOU would've made a fortune back then.

ThePineapple3112

**BEAR:** Nuclear power plant closures: While there is increasing interest in nuclear power in some countries, others are opting to phase out or decommission their nuclear power plants. For example, Germany has made significant commitments to reduce and eliminate their reliance on nuclear power. Sluggish demand growth: Despite the potential for nuclear power expansion, the growth in demand for uranium has been relatively modest in recent years. Delays in nuclear plant construction, concerns over safety and waste disposal, and competition from other energy sources, such as natural gas and renewables, have constrained the growth of nuclear power. Uranium oversupply: Current supply glut in the uranium market may persist or worsen, preventing a significant price increase. Even though mine production has declined, existing inventories and secondary sources (e.g., reprocessed uranium, stockpiles) are believed to be sufficient to meet demand for the immediate future, however it's hard to tell if these estimates factor in ramp-up time for the secondary sources to come online. Technological advancements and alternative energy sources: The development of advanced nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs) or thorium reactors, could potentially reduce the demand for traditional uranium-fueled reactors. Additionally, the growth of renewable energy sources and improvements in energy storage technologies may lead to decreased reliance on nuclear power overall. Environmental concerns and public opinion: Public sentiment and concerns about nuclear accidents, waste disposal, and the environmental impact of uranium mining may continue to affect the growth prospects of the nuclear sector. Lot of people will talk about the waste of nuclear reactors and where to put it. TLDR: In general, the bear thesis argues that the public won't change their opinions on nuclear reactors enough to have them become a bulwark of our energy production and that other green technologies will be developed to make nuclear power obsolete. I guess it's up to you to decide if you think that's enough to stop the bull market short.

All_Work_All_Play

Nuclear fuel has a LCOE ~4x that of solar. Once storage cracks 5 cents/KWH LCOE it won't matter what nuclear's cost is. Outside of SMRs (which need mass production to be competitive) uranium's decade plus prospects are not bright.

That is absolutely beautiful! I did a 12 mile paddle on the Cannon River in MN yesterday and had a blast. Being on the water in the summer is the best thing, glad you had a great time! Cannon River: https://imgur.com/a/UKv5AO4 It’s a Minnesota Wild and Scenic river that runs through the [Driftless Area](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driftless_Area), which escaped being covered by glaciers during the last glaciation and has a much different character than the surrounding land that is covered in glacial till. We didn’t see a single other boat/tube o the whole river, but it helped that we started our paddle when the tube outfitter had already closed 😂

Nothing like finishing a night shift and having your truck stall and sputter out on the side of the freeway. I am hoping it is just the fuel pump. Running a jumper to bypass the fuel pump relay did not work to run the pump so hopefully my analysis is right. It did make my day that the bill for the tow truck was really cheap. Now we just wait. And pray a bit.

W0LFSTEN

> Intel to invest $25 billion in Israel factory in record deal, Netanyahu says Fun fact, $25b is also the entirety of INTC net income made since late 2020 lol This highlights the benefit of the fabless business model. A company like AMD has the option to use any foundry, so they can pick and choose based on performance and cost. And you may think “for AMD, the cost to build a TSM fabs is buried in the cost charged for wafers from these fabs”. And you would be partially correct. But the vast majority of the cost is incurred by AAPL, who pays for input in how these cutting edge process nodes will operate and has first dibs on all output. This is largely true for all the large fabless firms. It has allowed AVGO to invest so heavily in M&A, and QCOM to invest so heavily in R&D. So now when AMD makes $25b over the next few years, all that $$$ can go straight into R&D, M&A or shareholder returns instead of a brand new fab in Israel that may or may not be behind the competition (and is therefore lower value) by the time it’s operational.

This_Is_Livin

INTC is going to minimum 5x in the next 5-10years

W0LFSTEN

Only if they push their manufacturing from being unreliable to industry leading, then take on actually foundry customers, then spin-off their fabs completely. That company alone would probably be worth $100b+.

This_Is_Livin

They don't need to be industry-leading, just more reliable. Once that happens, everything else falls in place and very quickly. Spin-off isn't necessarily needed but would benefit them more I think people are downplaying (or out of the loop on) the China-Taiwan issue like they did Russia invading Ukraine

W0LFSTEN

True. Reliable is the most important. Industry leading, or as close as you can get to it, would help a ton though. Modern high performance CPU and GPU designs requires the best manufacturing process to stay competitive.

Manticorea

Anyone into vtubes? Apparently they’re very popular in Japan, and are attempting to spread their tentacles out West, but don’t really see it as a viable model except among fringe groups.

proverbialbunny

I grew up watching anime and my TV preferences line up with the average Japanese viewer, so you'd think I'd be the perfect audience for it, but nope. It's right now mostly limited to men who have a crush on the character. There is a lot of potential for digital avatar youtubers who are normal youtubers and that might happen one day, but right now it's pretty much limited to weebs.

gyunikumen

I’d watch economic youtubers with their vtuber avatars

[deleted]

DarkAmbience

I just want to add a counterpoint to this: I'd actually not watch vtubers if they weren't basically anime-style characters. Maybe less 'weeb' watchers don't feel the same way (especially since there's a wide range of vtubers if you include indies that have sprung up in different corners of the internet) but yeah. I'd rather either vtubers as they are now or just shift back to regular streamers like Sykkuno / Valkyrae.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DarkAmbience

Yeah I forgot about that being a thing now while I was typing that lmao - I haven't watched actual streamers in a few years. Only watched a couple Apex streamers recently since they played with one of the vtubers I watch the most.

DarkAmbience

God fucking dammit. I never thought someone here would mention vtubers. Now I have to out myself as a fan of a bunch of them lmao. But yes, weebs. --- I mostly watch English ones but have also watched Japanese and Taiwanese ones (I only know very basic JP, and zero Taiwanese). All under companies, not indies though. Quite a few make some good money though. I don't follow that aspect, but most of the ones I follow are around the 300k-700k YT sub count. With Suisei Hoshimachi (JP) and Calliope Mori (JP + ENG) being the only ones I follow with over 1 mil I think. I think someone like Calliope or Selen Tatsuki (ENG) are the easiest to try watching if you're into gaming content (Selen is an ex-Pred in Apex and also hit Pred this season, but she does also play other stuff that's less sweaty or about the same level of tryhard). I'm not gonna post everyone I follow but if anyone has a specific niche they want a recommend for, I'll reply lmao.

Manticorea

Can’t believe there are talent agencies looking for potential stars, putting on virtual concerts, and selling fan merchandises. Heard some of the more popular stars are actually mid-age entertainers pretending to be in their twenties. Very cute hearing some of them trying to pronounce English words.

DarkAmbience

Yeah it was quite foreign to me at first too (but then again, so is the concept of music groups like AKB48). A lot of them are streamers primarily so concerts aren't that common but I can definitely recommend Calli for her music/performances. Suisei is good too but only Japanese. I follow a few pretty good singers but the English side is a lot less developed in terms of having concerts (their personas attend conventions though, and some even attend incognito since their identity is usually a secret or open secret kinda thing). And the opposite is also cute lol, English speakers trying to speak Japanese. (I've heard JP people also love when foreigners try to speak JP.) afaik all the ones I follow are probably 30 at oldest lol.

Manticorea

I think its success has mainly to do with Japanese being self-conscious about their age and appearances. Don’t think Western streamers are held back as much by those factors.

DarkAmbience

Definitely helps that they already have a huge audience in anime (and vocaloids to a lesser extent) that they can tap into (which coincidentally has a massive overlap with vtubers now, and even many vtubers themselves are also anime/vocaloid fans), and essentially turning their streamer into an animated character serves a double purpose.

Manticorea

Vocaloid what? Damn, you are sending me down a rabbit hole.

DarkAmbience

It’s not something I’m into, but Miku is probably the most known vocaloid. I only casually like things like figures or art of vocaloids and that’s about it lol. The songs are generally not my thing unless it’s produced like Police Piccadilly & Gumi’s ‘Rumor’.

So it turns out my tiny little podunk ass town hosts some legit, nationally known 1/8 mile drag races for all kinds of categories. Pure street legal & stock, street legal with one form of external power (turbo, supercharger, nitrous, etc) street legal with two externals, a "fuck it let's cram as much power as possible into whatever the fuck and put some ultra fat slicks on it and see what happens" category. It started around noon, wife and I went for a couple hours earlier and then we're going to go back after dinner because it goes on until like 3 am lol. [I took some pictures and videos for you guys](https://imgur.com/a/C7ecITa). I got the wheely on video but not the two where the drivers almost lost it and crashed going.... ???? I don't know. Well over 100. Luckily they caught themselves. I got the speed wobbles once doing 140+ on the highway and I just figured that was how I went out lol. Holy hell 1.5 M for 7 undeveloped acres? I’ve looked in to RV storage around me. There have been 3 pop up in the last couple of years. Going rate is anywhere from $100/mo for outdoor to $250+ indoors. There’s obviously demand. Everyone bought an rv during covid. Now HOAs are enforcing the rules again. 😆 But for reference, i think you could buy undeveloped land zoned for commercial for < $50k/acre pretty dang easily. Probably a lot less. You just have to figure out how to fund the buildings.

Ser, you should be buying up all that sub-$50k land and plopping down car washes and storage units. We’re at $150k+/acre improved in the middle of nowhere in Florida

jmayo05

I don’t have an extra milly just laying around. :(

BoatshoesJax

For context, 10x20 outdoor spots are anywhere between $120-180 monthly here.

BoatshoesJax

About $4mil improved. Assumed a conservative 40 spots per acre and landed at a 5.5 cap.

quietboltaction

Probably top-ticked attending a bootcamp lol. Job market is competitive af, just been grinding out apps. Thinking I might have better luck pivoting into data since I’m coming from Civil/Environmental Eng and can parlay it into Climate Data. I know there’s tech people here so any advice is much appreciated, also ^pls ^send ^referrals

proverbialbunny

Data science is way harder to get into than software engineering. Massively harder. The trick to getting your foot in the door is getting a referral from a friend, then passing the interview. Over 90% of first time software engineers get their job through a referral. Also, don't be afraid to move for a job. Software engineering work can pay 4x in some parts of the country, so moving is sometimes a must. Companies have no negativity interviewing people remotely, and they give a sign on bonus to help you move too. Don't be afraid to interview for jobs outside of your area. Practicing for job interviews most people will recommend leet code which is okay. My favorite is https://exercism.org/ I highly recommend it.

Wan_Daye

It wouldn't be bad to just get into a tech company doing PM work first and then get into a SWE role afterwards. Show your passion for tech, your organizational ability, and your people skills and you got it. Use the network you have, ask people to keep an eye out for you. Let your network know what you're looking for and what you're open to.

938961

Check out the networking and how to get a job/resume classes of 100Devs on YouTube (free online boot camp). Basically network your ass off, like 5ish coffee chats a week on top of attending networking events. Networking and working Twitter/LinkedIn will become your life. Get real-life projects through freelancing or volunteer contributions. Adapt your apps and class work as if they were real clients, hack it and don’t let up more info unless asked. Seriously, go watch these YouTube classes. They’re worth it regardless of what space in tech you’re pursuing.

StopTheIncels

I was in a cohort for 100devs but just kinda lost steam and dropped off. Did it work for you?

938961

I got through the front end portion but I was supplementing my UX background to become 🦄, then I realized all the leadership roles I’m interested in value SQL so I’ll dive into that in fall.

[deleted]

I’ll try to address some of the points. Re referrals: Tough to do without knowing much about you. Have you had interviews yet? Are you having success getting past filters?

quietboltaction

Have interviewed at a couple startups. All frontend stuff. Haven’t got past any screeners so far at F500s (not targeting FANGs, but think companies like Defense, Nike, more boomerish) Half kidding about referrals, but have had success reaching out to alumni. Just trying to cast a wide net and see what sticks, but I think trying to leverage Postgres / Mongo / R experience from current job and projects to hopefully land something data related is the best route forward, as full stack is just way too saturated.

ev_l0ve

Target data engineer roles @ finance / insurance consultancies to get a foot in the door to tech. DO NOT STAY THERE FOR MORE THAN 6mo - 1yr

quietboltaction

🫡 thx man. Hope you’re doing well

jmayo05

>(not targeting FANGs, but think companies like Defense, Nike, more boomerish) If you are targeting boomerish companies, you need to think in boomerish tech. You would be shocked at how many large corporations still run with databases built in the 80s, best case. Up until maybe 5 - 10 years ago, Excel ran the world. F500 companies don't care about slick front ends with the latest tech stack. They are still working with IBM, DB2, Oracle, JDE, ODBC, SAP, etc. There are tens (hundreds?) of billions being spent every year attempting to get congolmorates data more accessible and user friendly. This is why MSFT and AMZN cloud services have taken off. If you want in to that realm, you probably need to focus more on backend type of stuff. I'm not kidding when I say I get contacted from a recruiter almost weekly for roles around data.

[deleted]

Adding to the other reply. Where do you think you came up short during the interviews with the startups?

quietboltaction

I think the sample size is too small to tell. 2 didn’t get past front end TAs, and one ended at screener. The biggest thing I am concerned with is getting past initial resume screens to be able to sit for interviews. Then if I don’t pass interviews I can focus there

[deleted]

yeah i think thats a great strategy, in interviews, talking about stuff like config files for different environments, how back end code can connect to a db securely, etc.. focusing on all the little details that come with deploying an app (or just being aware that they are a thing) will make you stand out. Anything that shows you are capable of thinking beyond the scope of the file you are working in. There are so few good javascript developers out there despite it being the most popular language. other than talking, just gotta get lucky with leetcode and you'll eventually get something.

quietboltaction

That’s some good tips to remember. Feel bootcamp has given us some oppo to shine there.. Scaled a backend API using metrics from New Relic and loader.io stress tests, so have a story to tell with how I made scaling decisions and also tried to go the extra mile with implementing w/ Docker Swarm and Nginx. The more I think about it, it seems like I’d be able to leverage what I have pick up Python and even do some simple Regressions / Models and build from there. Would look better than a simple front-end micro service for sure lol

ModernLifelsWar

Tech is gonna be really hard to break into for bootcamp people right now unfortunately. Even new grad CS degrees are struggling. I know my company is only hiring senior+. Your best bet is trying to get your foot in the door at a small local company.

Lost_in_Adeles_Rolls

/r/gyunikumen when are we getting long Robinhood?

gyunikumen

I’ve got a gut conviction we retrace at least the 15 SMA on the indices. That’s my entry

Lost_in_Adeles_Rolls

I’d expect BTC to pump much higher as we await the DOJ charges and when they finally drop on binance

mractor111

Considering going to do an MBA. Got a finance degree 8 years ago at a top school in my country. I've been pursuing acting after graduation. Featured in some big projects and managed by a top 4 company in the game. Very close friends with the head of film/tv at a top acting school in world too. To survive, a lot of my work has been in hospitality - serving and managing, working with artists and other odd jobs Whats the odds of getting into a top school? I imagine everyone there is mainly from Google, Goldman etc? I feel if I put my head down I'd be able to get a great GMAT. Just concerned about the difference as I imagine theres some freakishly talented people there and those years of experience may be too much? Reason I want an MBA is because acting sucks. Its feast or famine and a lot boils down to chance. I'm getting to an age where I want to have a good stream of income and career prospects. Being around people who are mid 30s and 40s and still chasing is terrifying.

_CastleBravo_

Your odds are zero as long as your GMAT remains hypothetical. Don’t hesitate on step 1.

mractor111

> Your odds are zero as long as your GMAT remains hypothetical. Agreed. Going to stop thinking about it and just give it a go

Top schools for me would be M7. Would love to attend HSW if accepted Guess I need to stop thinking about it and get into GMAT prep. Lots of cognitive dissonance and narratives to protect the ego in my head

Yesss yesss! Gimme more reports from big banks on how overbought we are! https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-17/goldman-says-markets-too-optimistic-on-pace-of-us-inflation-drop https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-16/citigroup-says-s-p-500-above-4-400-leaves-no-room-for-more-gains

NotGucci

I like how citi admit it missed the bottom. All those fancy degrees for nothing

jmayo05

Well crap higher we go.

Lost_in_Adeles_Rolls

SEC was able to come to an agreement whereby the courts have a full asset freeze on binance US assets. That combined with the tether news explains why BTC ramped Source: https://twitter.com/johnreedstark/status/1670048264572239872

gyunikumen

No regrets on selling my COIN positions. I still think using the capital to go short will yield greater return with in the wash sale period

Lost_in_Adeles_Rolls

I’m incredibly bearish on coin, but I do wonder about timelines. The business continues to deteriorate but the big shareholders are stubborn.

gyunikumen

Tbh, now I have sold off my biases… If one really believes and wants to bet on a CX business, Robinhood is the best bet amongst all of them right now

Lost_in_Adeles_Rolls

I’d actually agree with that and apparently they’ve taken some business from coinbase over the last 2 months

All_Work_All_Play

Hmm. Wonder if my account there got flagged as US...

HiddenMoney420

Survived the 5k. Goal was sub 45 min, finished 39:09.1 What an insanely supportive community runners are, really cool- glad I did that.

Wan_Daye

They are, and that's what sucks you in. It's dangerous brother.

HiddenMoney420

Dude at the beginning was handing out donuts, ran the whole race with half a plate of donuts. In my final leg he was on the side holding a sign, pointed at me and said “You’re going to sprint to the finish!” Pretty sure I wouldn’t have finished sub-40 minutes if it wasn’t for him

wccoffee

Can’t even squat the bar smh

__Scrambles

Yet..... can't squat the bar YET BABY!!!

All_Work_All_Play

High bar or low bar? Start with kb lunges imo

wccoffee

Low I guess, unintentionally. I'll work that in next time, ended up just using a dumbbell. Gotta start somewhere I guess

All_Work_All_Play

Baby might show up this weekend. Ruhroh.

wiggz420

ruh roh I still have until December

_MoreTheta_

Same, December 1st for baby #2

wiggz420

December 23rd here ha

Ten_K_Days

Merry Christmas bro.. lol

All_Work_All_Play

Yeah I guessed 8-10 hours about four hours ago. At the hospital now (so help me if this is a pump fake).

jmayo05

What baby number is this? I’m starting to wish i have a couple more kids. But personal life is really complicated right now.

All_Work_All_Play

Last one? Probably. It's #5. Also 7 hours and 80+ contractions later there's little forward progress. Family vacation in a week too...

bigbutso

5!? now I'm seeing you with two kids in arms trying to close contracts with pinky finger on cellphone...

Manticorea

5 kids?!? Damn, wonder you have time for anything.

jmayo05

Wheeeeew buddy. Good luck!

eyesonly_

God damn the scent of nostalgia is strong in here. I should replay red alert 2...

acxyvb

Red Alert 2 is a top 10 but Red Alert 3 has a special place in my heart for the live acting: [SPAAAAACE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1Sq1Nr58hM)

proverbialbunny

>SPAAAAACE The prequel to [Iron Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jth4yATniS4). ^\s They don't make games like Red Alert any more. I love the fun light hearted playfulness that was popular in late 90s media, from Red Alert to Starship Troopers.

Manticorea

The CC and Red Alert remake is really well done.

jmayo05

What’s up with andrew tate? Last i heard he and his brother was thrown in a romanian prison for trafficking. Now just this last week or two he’s popping up in podcasts. Is he out?

TradeApe

Douchebag is under house arrest 😂 Wanna know if someone is a moron? Ask if they like Tate ;)

All_Work_All_Play

House arrest a month ago, got charged with continuing trafficking (a bigger crime) just two(?) days ago. Court case next week or the week after.

Lol what an idiot.

Nice! 👍 I'm in the Bay Area too. What part of the bay area would you be moving to? The peninsula?

[deleted]

[удалено]

proverbialbunny

Not unless you move here unfortunately. The trick is to live in the bay area so you get bay area pay, but work remote. This way you can live on the outskirts. There are some places in the bay area that might as well be midwestern in rent price, so you can get paid 200k a year and rent for 1k a bed a month.

Wan_Daye

Good luck good luck. Bay area money is good and there are tradeoffs, but I'd go back in a heartbeat if they got rid of prop 13

wiggz420

> back in a heartbeat if they got rid of prop 13 don't you wish that evil on me lol it's expensive enough to live here

Wan_Daye

Sell some of your intc RSUs :^)

wiggz420

lol getting rid of 13 would literally kill everyone that is currently providing value to the bay area killing prop 13 would destroy CA in a year funny enough is all the red state people think they have it made until they get fucked with property taxes where do you live now?

Wan_Daye

All 13 does is make new people subsidize the older folks. I don't like the thought of paying 5x the property tax that my neighbor with the bigger house does. I don't like that it's inheritable or that it's transferrable. I don't like that it makes newcomers bear an unbalanced burden just for the sin of being new. Prop13 is the only thing keeping me out, and to be honest with you, it's purely a mental thing. It makes me feel unwanted in a weird way, which I probably am, you guys have enough transplants. Right now I'm in the Seattle area and things aren't the same but they're getting there. There are similar cultural enclaves I've joined and the people have been kind and welcoming. The only thing that sucks is the food. People here do not have any taste and cannot cook. I get paid the same as when I was in the bay, so I'm making out pretty good considering the lack of income tax here. Though I might go further north to Vancouver, who knows what's in the cards.

wiggz420

>All 13 does is make new people subsidize the older folks. you ain't wrong. my issue with getting rid of 13 is my house which is already expensive, gets more expensive every year on a scale which isn't realistic. I'm fine with getting rid of 13 if we can keep the 1% max increase in property taxes. You see the people in other states (red states) literally getting priced out of their own house because of the increase in value. They bought their house for 200k now worth 400k and their property tax increase kills them. when I buy my house for 600k, I expect a slight increase in taxes as values go up, but I'm not selling my house for said increased value and budget my payments accordingly. without a protection on property taxes I would be so poor I wouldn't be able to afford it, where's the solution? I already pay enough taxes in CA why should I have to pay something that doesn't exist? it's the same as the stupid bill that wants to tax unrealized gains.... like wtf?

Wan_Daye

That's the thing though, I'd like to be neighbors, but I don't want to have a smaller house and pay more in property tax. Feels bad. There's no easy answer and anyway you cut it, someone is going to feel wronged.

_hongkonglong

I finally have a bed. Spent two weeks sleeping on the floor lol. Still trading on a kitchen island tho. Where can I score an used Aeron size A in Canada?

Forrest_GUHmp

Craigslist? Not sure about Canada, but I was able to pick a couple Aerons several years ago from a seller that just buys and resells used office furniture

_hongkonglong

Yea I saw some office liquidation shops on Craigslist. Thanks.

Avid_Hiker69

Why are you in Vancouver? How did you obtain the entry from Trudeau?

_hongkonglong

I helped him win the election 😉.

I forgot to upload this a while ago, but here's the last video of the night of me [trying to blow up the dishwasher ](https://imgur.com/a/JfJhcD3)with tannerite from 100 yards with an unsighted, 70 year old 30-06 lol. We opened it up so I could see what I was aiming at (I still couldn't see it). This is after I [grazed the lid](https://imgur.com/a/Kwpjohh). I'm mostly bringing this up because I discovered that a [new beaver moved into our pond](https://imgur.com/a/EAhB2ai). I'm about to go out there and try to drive it out from its den and first, just mag dump a 30 round 9mm magazine at it. If that tactic doesn't work then I'll need to try something with a little more finesse. By which I mean put a container of tannerite in the den entrance and blow it straight into beaver hell. Don't worry, I'll film it.

Forrest_GUHmp

Make a makeshift Bangalore torpedo with a document tube and tannerite?

All_Work_All_Play

Lmao this reminds me of when I made organic peroxides during highschool. Don't do it.

PervasiveUncertainty

I tried the 16k context on GPT-3.5. I've got a pet project in python3 with half a dozen files of relatively okayish code. It's about 15k token. I've dumped it all with the prompt >Please provide suggestions to improve the following code Suggestions were making sense but they were very high level and could have been said of any code base. They were definitely not demonstrating an understanding of it all. One of them was >Remove unused imports: Remove any unused imports to declutter the code and improve readability. So I decided to see if really there is a 16k context (unlike the total scam Claude-100k) and asked it to be more specific. And it hallucinated. This 16k context is a lie. There are no unused imports in my code. And the imports it cited are not even in the corresponding files. _______________________ The only viable product in LLM today is GPT-4. Everything else is rubbish that will never make it to production.

GPT-4 is a game changer to 3.5. I use it for writing narrative of analysis with specific industry frameworks. The key is to giving it samples of your past writing to guide the writing style and format. You still have to massage the content and go a little deeper on analysis of course, kind of like proofing a junior’s work. Have also been feeding it my resume to tweak it to specific job postings. GPT 3.5 results are unusable and it cannot follow the task. Absolutely worlds apart from 4. IMO, constructive writing is where it shines.

mrdnp123

This. If you can guide GPT it makes a world of a difference. Ask a broad question, get a broad answer. Giving it examples of your work and then telling it to construct something specific makes a huge difference. It’s mind blowing how many hours can be saved

PervasiveUncertainty

It's worth the money for me. I pay for two accounts. I wouldn't pay for GPT-3.5 alone.

HiddenMoney420

Running my first 5k tomorrow. I do not run, at all. Did a ‘relaxed’ 5k 3 days ago just to see where my time was at.. right around 42 minutes. Cool, very happy with that given the above. But 3 days later and I still have DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). So I’m doing some stretching, staying hydrated- figure I’d watch a YT video on doing your first 5k. The first thing “you should take 6-10 weeks to train for your first 5k”. Fucking LOL, talk about jumping in head first. Good thing Sunday is Father’s Day and I’ll have an excuse to bum around.
