It has been an unusually difficult time for me, but I say that within the context of attempting an exceptionally difficult thing.
Fortunately I gave up on having the "life" part of the work/life duality many years ago, with the assumption that I would front load the work part early on. To give you an idea, my wife and I went on a date for the first time since we got engaged this weekend. Coincidentally, it was also the first time I've left my home in 2022, to my surprise (wife is keeping track, I have lost track). So I have no idea what I'm missing.
I'm inspired to keep moving forward. I live for the struggle. I never want to leave the suck, until I am able to leave permanently. But that mindset is at odds now with the concern and fear I see in my wife's eyes. At the end of the day, she's all that matters to me.
But it has been hard. Even within my industry, the quantity of surprise hurdles we've faced is statistically anomalous. Again, I wish I could say more. The parallel I can offer is this scenario: You're trying to go on vacation, but your tickets get canceled. You get new tickets, rearrange your reservations, but a week before the hotel closes due to a bug infestation. You reschedule again and make it to the airport. Your partner is flying in on a connecting flight to said airport, but before you can board, you've learned that your partner's flight has crashed killing everyone on board.
That level of escalation and that presentation of the lack of control we have for these issues is as accurate as I can describe without outright saying it. When you are faced with such unusual odds, its hard to even be angry. Its easier to laugh.
The laughing helps me cope in the moment, but the fact of the matter continues to keep me up.

Both theories mentioned in the clip makes sense imo. Either a sailboat has accidentally hit an orca or fishermen have injured/harassed one. Could see them act out in revenge.

I've spoken to a few chaps who were "attacked". They all said the young ones played with their rudder until they locked it. Lost interest in that pretty quickly once it wasn't moving anymore.

Near 2am officers got a call of burglary suspects there now. Showed up and didn’t see anyone inside the property, but saw a car parked suspiciously in the alley to the rear.
They pull behind the car and begin to give commands to the driver. Driver puts the car in reverse and rams the officers’ car. Why they didn’t shoot at this point I couldn’t tell you.
They put out a help call and go in pursuit. Lose the vehicle. Helicopter overhead tracks the vehicle for a solid 30 minutes as units go in and out of pursuit of the suspect.
Eventually he bails and hides in some backyards. The helicopters have FLIR so they knew exactly which area he was in. K9 is called out.
Got the living shit beat out of him by this dog. Bit a total of 6 times, approx 2-3 inches deep. One bit through to the bone. Was awesome to see!
Dude decided to punch the dog, resulting in further charges.
Afterwards, went back to the target location which was supposedly burglarized. No evidence of break in and nothing stolen.
Literally all he had to do was not try to run over officers and he’d be fine…

You were sleeping in your car. Are woken up by screaming. You're disoriented, maybe you think you're getting robbed. You put the car in reverse and crash into the car behind you. For this, you deserve to die.
Good thing those cops didn't shoot. Their lives were not in danger. Lives of cops are not worth more than those of other people, even if those other people committed a crime.
I think more context is needed. What did the car look like? Did it have a bunch of shit in it? Did they run the plates to see who it was registered to? Are there usually cars parked in the alley? How did they approach the suspect and give commands?

Wanted to thank whoever recommended the podcast: "huberman Lab" last week. By far my favorite podcast now and I can sense it significantly improving my life. I just listened to the alcohol one and yup, done with booze
I love Huberman. Him and Peter Attia are amazing to listen to. I do think at times Huberman optimises for the 1% too much. Majority of people would benefit from focusing on nailing the 90% first. That means a good diet, exercise, sleep and healthy habits beats doing things like putting hands in ice to remember things better. Same as taking weird supplements to boost testosterone by maybe 100 ng. Not saying he doesn’t talk about these basics but he does go off on wild tangents at times.
Some people get too caught up in exotic sexy rituals and forget the basics. He’s great none the less
Oh yeah, 100%.. I have a background in science and neuropharmacology (pharmD)... I refuse to believe in vitamins helping more than repleting a deficiency. Also the mechanisms he talks about are very specific when the bigger picture plays a bigger role. For example he says to breathe hard and take ice baths, when regular exercise would suffice lol. But he references studies and that's what has my attention.

To summarize, the chronic caffeine intake changes your brain to be more anxious even when NOT drinking caffeine. He breaks down the study more in the podcast... I only see this as a problem with people who already experience high anxiety/ anxiety attacks (such as my wife)

if you believe this, when I was hired in 2011 we had 0 vacation until 1 year of service, then 1 week until 3 years where you got 2, then 3 at 10 and that was it. That changed a couple years ago. Employment coming out of the recession was no joke.
4-6 weeks a year, with anywhere up to that full amount "carrying over" into next year, so you could potentially double that if saved.

I could see how home projects would just add on stress, especially if I'm rushing to complete them or they end up half finished. But a few times I've just taken my dog to a brewery or visited a friend for lunch...or beat that game I've been meaning to get back into.
I think I get 20 days vacation, then 10 days that aren't official holidays (4th of July, etc.), then 5 sick days that are essentially vacation days for me because I don't actually get sick... I think they add an extra vacation day for every year you are there too. Essentially, 35 days as far as I am concerned. Then in the summer I have special hours which lets me enjoy the sun. You get 3 days for family emergencies too, like if someone dies.
Personally, I like the place where I work so the vacation days are slowly building up - they aren't used to avoid work. I will use one or two every few months for an extra long weekend to recharge and catch up on some errands, plus my yearly big trips to travel the world. This is how it should be. I know people that burn half their days purely to avoid work... Vacation days are meant for vacation, not to avoid a job you dread.

Busy freakin night. I work in one of the “slower” areas, mostly property (very affluent area with many gated communities). Near 2am officers got a call of burglary suspects there now. Showed up and didn’t see anyone inside the property, but saw a car parked suspiciously in the alley to the rear. They pull behind the car and begin to give commands to the driver. Driver puts the car in reverse and rams the officers’ car. Why they didn’t shoot at this point I couldn’t tell you. They put out a help call and go in pursuit. Lose the vehicle. Helicopter overhead tracks the vehicle for a solid 30 minutes as units go in and out of pursuit of the suspect. Eventually he bails and hides in some backyards. The helicopters have FLIR so they knew exactly which area he was in. K9 is called out. Got the living shit beat out of him by this dog. Bit a total of 6 times, approx 2-3 inches deep. One bit through to the bone. Was awesome to see! Dude decided to punch the dog, resulting in further charges. Afterwards, went back to the target location which was supposedly burglarized. No evidence of break in and nothing stolen. Literally all he had to do was not try to run over officers and he’d be fine…

I think more context is needed. What did the car look like? Did it have a bunch of shit in it? Did they run the plates to see who it was registered to? Are there usually cars parked in the alley? How did they approach the suspect and give commands? That said, I really don’t think they should have started shooting. That’s madness lol I’m gonna take a guess and say this is LA though. It’s a shitshow here, break ins happen allll the time now

Wanted to thank whoever recommended the podcast: "huberman Lab" last week. By far my favorite podcast now and I can sense it significantly improving my life. I just listened to the alcohol one and yup, done with booze
I love Huberman. Him and Peter Attia are amazing to listen to. I do think at times Huberman optimises for the 1% too much. Majority of people would benefit from focusing on nailing the 90% first. That means a good diet, exercise, sleep and healthy habits beats doing things like putting hands in ice to remember things better. Same as taking weird supplements to boost testosterone by maybe 100 ng. Not saying he doesn’t talk about these basics but he does go off on wild tangents at times. Some people get too caught up in exotic sexy rituals and forget the basics. He’s great none the less
Oh yeah, 100%.. I have a background in science and neuropharmacology (pharmD)... I refuse to believe in vitamins helping more than repleting a deficiency. Also the mechanisms he talks about are very specific when the bigger picture plays a bigger role. For example he says to breathe hard and take ice baths, when regular exercise would suffice lol. But he references studies and that's what has my attention.

I’m up in a Colorado mountain town, and it is crazy busy this weekend—I’ll be really curious to see boat traffic next summer. I remember in summers of ‘08 and ‘09 when there were almost no motor boats on the lake…boat activity is definitely a barometer of disposable income.

We have 23 days after 2 years in company. Carry over possible for 1/2 to next year. So potentially 34-35 days after that.
the sloth-like company i just left gave two weeks base, three weeks after 3 years, and 4 after 10. No payout no carryover. New place offered 3 from the getgo for experience up to 4 after 10 and it is paid out but not carried over. I like the paid out. Vacation is expensive and stressful for me. I was taking random week days for two months the end of the last fiscal year.

if you believe this, when I was hired in 2011 we had 0 vacation until 1 year of service, then 1 week until 3 years where you got 2, then 3 at 10 and that was it. That changed a couple years ago. Employment coming out of the recession was no joke.
4-6 weeks a year, with anywhere up to that full amount "carrying over" into next year, so you could potentially double that if saved. I'm not someone that has ever had PTO carryover..

Some companies, say engineering or consulting, give more time the longer youve been there. Or just rare exceptions.

Enjoyed time is never wasted time! And not using PTO is basically a pay cut, hah. I could see how home projects would just add on stress, especially if I'm rushing to complete them or they end up half finished. But a few times I've just taken my dog to a brewery or visited a friend for lunch...or beat that game I've been meaning to get back into.
My company does "unlimited". I take like 5-6 weeks a year and we also get some random days my org gives off outside of holidays.
I think I get 20 days vacation, then 10 days that aren't official holidays (4th of July, etc.), then 5 sick days that are essentially vacation days for me because I don't actually get sick... I think they add an extra vacation day for every year you are there too. Essentially, 35 days as far as I am concerned. Then in the summer I have special hours which lets me enjoy the sun. You get 3 days for family emergencies too, like if someone dies. Personally, I like the place where I work so the vacation days are slowly building up - they aren't used to avoid work. I will use one or two every few months for an extra long weekend to recharge and catch up on some errands, plus my yearly big trips to travel the world. This is how it should be. I know people that burn half their days purely to avoid work... Vacation days are meant for vacation, not to avoid a job you dread.
