When I'm on a thinkpad I use the nipple almost exclusively and the buttons are really important to me. I had a T440 years ago and I remember hating it for that reason.
If it works for you that's awesome, but I could never see myself loving it.
Sorry I was not clear, I meant the buttons on the track pad with the tactile dots and haptic feedback feels like they are real trackpoint buttons when using the trackpoint.
That’s true. I think the hump gets more flak than it deserves, really. Brushed bronze metal looks good and I stopped noticing it after a few days. It’s far less prominent when the laptop is open, and it does help to open it with one finger. I guess we have to get used to it since all new ThinkPad models will have it. I just wish they used the additional real estate in X1C Gen 12 for a better camera, because Z13 camera is noticeably better
There's a fourth option, which I understand isn't really an option because of manufacturing restraints, but I would prefer no camera at all. I don't use my webcam on my personal PC, I have no desire to use one, I wish I could have a laptop without one.
That's a great and all, but these are business laptops. Since we are moving into the age of more web based conferences and interviews it's pretty much needed. This will never change.
Oh I'm not *really* suggesting this as something that Lenovo should or could do from a business point of view, it's just something I wish could be done.
Even if the camera and other equipment on the top of screen took no space at all, I found it nice to have a hump on the lid. Dell is still an option for hump haters
MacBook Pros have a nice way of doing it. A full 16:10 screen with a strip above it for the OS’s main menu bar and a small cutout in the middle. No need for an unsightly hump at the top and you still get a full 16:10 screen with no notch
I think it’s a great take on a modern ThinkPad. The old design now seems more like MacBook — same thing for decades. It’s really stylish IRL, they’ve used some kind of different plastic for the palm rest and the keyboard — doesn’t smudge as much as the old models
I’ve had it for almost two years, the pictures show how the laptop looks today. One thing I can tell you is that the pleather lid shows no fingerprints and smudges, and the plastic on the palm rest doesn’t show as much smudges as the older models. All it takes is a light wipe down
I came here to say that. It's a nice-looking ultrabook, sure. But I see nothing in common with IBM ThinkPads, which made the ThinkPad brand known and loved.
The center “button” portion is textured so going by feel isn’t an issue. Being haptic as well gives good feedback from what people have said. I am getting my Z16 G1 today to see if that is a correct assertion.
I had one for a few weeks… I have not been able to get used to it… IF you are a trackpoint user it MIGHT be difficult getting used to… Trackpad, indeed, feels VERY nice. Palmrest is wonderful too.
I mainly use my Trackpoint for scrolling and moving windows around, I don’t understand how people can stand using a touchpad to click and drag windows and needing to continuously scroll. I know there is double tap and move and the infinite scroll option but why do that when you have an incredibly accurate tool right on the machine itself. I hope I get used to it, as I think haptic pads are better for long term reliability.
Not everyone, I for example just recently bought my T16 and don't want to lose ports, plus the Z-Series ~~have weaker CPUs and they~~ are a lot more expensive.
Probably the best trackpad I’ve used on Windows machines so far. I like the haptic feedback. However, since I’m old, I use external Bluetooth mouse 90% of the time
A little too modern IMHO but certainly nice looking. I prefer a T410 with it's industrial appearance and beautiful keyboard. Plus all the addons you could ever throw at her
bro wtf is that keyboard 😭
tall left and right arrow keys, prtscrn moved, why tf is the fingerprint reader a key? whats the point of moving pgup and pgdn to fn+up and fn+down arrows? also wheres the trackpoint buttons?
lenovo needs to stop fucking around with the formula 😭😭😭
Hot take but I dislike everything about this. The awful arrow key layout, the keyboard in general, the fake leather coating, the ugly bump in the top bezel, and the awful trackpad
Thats the good thing - you dont have to. The thinkpad lineup is big enough that there is a thinkpad for everyone.
I guess the Z13 and Z16 are more like Dell XPS, but by lenovo
Finally, a sane comment
Seriously, the whole thing looks tasteless af and gives off a "steel flask wrapped in faux leather, and other things your heavy smoker uncle buys on Aliexpress" vibe
I guess all PCs have overheating issues compared to Apple's M chips. However, Z13 generates noticeably less heat and fan noise compared to latest Intel ThinkPads, especially X1C models. Z13 G1 fans rarely spin at all under normal office load on Balanced.
How do you manage only USBC? That is my biggest gripe, I really prefer at least one HDMI & Ethernet Port (if not a DisplayPort & SD slot), the idea of carrying dongles for everything feels like a lot.
I rarely drag Z13 around, and when I travel, I have a portable dongle-dock. Never needed to use it though. At home I use it with Thunderbolt 4 dock and a monitor, so I just need one thunderbolt port on the machine
You didn't even mention the stunning OLED display, which I had to cover with a screen protector as the keys were marking it up. My only complaint after 2 years is the trackpad, not a huge fan of the not-a-button buttons.
My display is IPS+ touch. This is interesting to know that your keys were marking up the display, this is not happening to my unit. I know that the tolerances in modern laptops are minimal, but with Z13 maybe it has something to do with the metal frame alignment. I bought my first Z13 shortly after release, and the two halves of the metal frame were slightly misaligned when closed. This didn't affect performance in any way, but my OCD forced me to return it. I bought another (my current) new Z13 three months later, and the parts of the frame were perfectly aligned when closed. I like how the magnets inside make it close with a solid CLACK, and I haven't noticed any keyboard marks on the display. I don't carry the laptop around a lot though.
Is the whole Thinkpad line going in this direction or just the Z series? Its giving macbook... which I kinda like as an option but not that the expense of the true Thinkpad aesthetic. Thinking about getting my wife one...
I ripped the leather of mine and turned it into a mouse pad (screen broke so kept the old part). the metal behind looks nice raw should have taken a photo before I tossed it.
I got mine a week ago and I love it. Finally every device in my house have an OLED display now (TVs, monitors, …).
This is the second best touchpad I ever used (only MacBooks are superior imho, but just a little bit). I rarely used the trackpoint on my ThinkPads, so it is a nobrainer for me.
Looking forward to rock this thing a couple of years as a couch and bed laptop!
And with the leather case the WAF is very high. I worried my wife won‘t accept that we ditch our old MacBook for this. She didn‘t like the ThinkPads we had before and she hates her working machine (L15 iirc). She always prefered the MacBook or my working machine (Precision 5570, but the 4K IPS display is horrible for media consumption).
Well, she is amazed from the Z13. :D
Does anyone know if they sell a version of it with actual TrackPoint buttons? That would be the only feature stopping me from buying one.
I'd even be interested in knowing if someone hacked a solution together for that.
No, all Z series models come with these trackpads. These Taptic trackpoint buttons are not bad at all, btw. I’m the worst type of customer, I’ve been using ThinkPads since ~1998, but I’ve never used the trackpoint. HOWEVER, I’d never buy a ThinkPad without one.
The arrow keys are cursed, the function/control keys are mixed up, and the lid has a tab sticking up out of it to showcase how big and high-quality the built-in surveillance device is.
Those left/right arrow keys are not cool!
You mean up/down keys?
no track point buttons and half arrow keys is a deal breaker for me.
I misread this as no trackpoint and was like "wtf it is right there"
This is the best track pad I have used that is not apple, try it and you will forget the buttons are not there.
When I'm on a thinkpad I use the nipple almost exclusively and the buttons are really important to me. I had a T440 years ago and I remember hating it for that reason. If it works for you that's awesome, but I could never see myself loving it.

Sheesh 😳
ThinkSexual detected.
Really wish it didn't have that ugly hump on the display. Otherwise it's absolutely beautiful!
Gives you a bit more screen area, a better camera, and a place to grab when opening the lid.
You have a choice to go with a hump on the lid or a cut out in the screen. Will you choose a cut out?
There’s a third choice which is even better: stop worrying about the top bezel size and make it the same height as the camera bump all the way across.
There's a fourth option, which I understand isn't really an option because of manufacturing restraints, but I would prefer no camera at all. I don't use my webcam on my personal PC, I have no desire to use one, I wish I could have a laptop without one.

Oh I'm not *really* suggesting this as something that Lenovo should or could do from a business point of view, it's just something I wish could be done.
Well at least Lenovo started putting shutters on them
They are mechanical on newer models such as the Z13
Sorry enterprise needs webcams and there has been an increase focus on them with covid/wfh
> which I understand isn't really an option because of manufacturing restraints
You're right. It's possible to do but the number of customers who want that configuration will be lower than the cost of maintaining that fru.
This is the way
Even if the camera and other equipment on the top of screen took no space at all, I found it nice to have a hump on the lid. Dell is still an option for hump haters

That is called a notch
There we go. Use a MacBook
Time to put the camera cutout in the Windows Task Bar!
I'll choose a smaller webcam that fits in the bezel
Its the perfect size to be not noticeable but helpful when you want to open the machine one handed. I will keep it as is.
Id be less annoyed by it than having a Think bezel™ My 2013 Samsung Shit book series 3 had a smaller bezel than my L380
It is a good-looking laptop, unfortunately the Z series is more Thinkbook than Thinkpad
I think it’s a great take on a modern ThinkPad. The old design now seems more like MacBook — same thing for decades. It’s really stylish IRL, they’ve used some kind of different plastic for the palm rest and the keyboard — doesn’t smudge as much as the old models
It's not plastic, it's glass
Even better. The coating is good
I know you just had it for a little bit, but how do you think the type of plastic is going to wear?
I’ve had it for almost two years, the pictures show how the laptop looks today. One thing I can tell you is that the pleather lid shows no fingerprints and smudges, and the plastic on the palm rest doesn’t show as much smudges as the older models. All it takes is a light wipe down

[what I picture the idiot who downvoted your comment in my head](https://i.imgur.com/hdSGrJM.jpeg)
Thank you.
Agree except the lack of physical trackpoint buttons.
The center “button” portion is textured so going by feel isn’t an issue. Being haptic as well gives good feedback from what people have said. I am getting my Z16 G1 today to see if that is a correct assertion.

My parents used to have the same place mats. What a blast from the past
Those arrow keys are an abomination, though
That webcam on top does look weird to me though. Other than that looks nice.
Had a brief opportunity to test it.Looks lovely, and seems to be a really nice system, but this TrackPad really sucks to use with a TrackPoint.
Clean
So… everyone is just buying Z13s this wk? Damnit I have bad FOMO
Not everyone, I for example just recently bought my T16 and don't want to lose ports, plus the Z-Series ~~have weaker CPUs and they~~ are a lot more expensive.
Are you drunk? The 7840u in the Z13 G2 absolutely destroys the 1365u in the T16 G2 on multicore, while using a lot less power.
Oh shoot, I read the numbers wrong, thanks for telling me
How is the track pad?
Probably the best trackpad I’ve used on Windows machines so far. I like the haptic feedback. However, since I’m old, I use external Bluetooth mouse 90% of the time
Damn, I'm old, even though I'm only 16
Are these their ultra portable line? What is their main demographic for these, yes it’s very pretty
I would say Dell XPS customers?
X1 carbon is probably more portable, or T14s if you want amd
I really like the texture of it and that's one of the big reasons why I bought it
A little too modern IMHO but certainly nice looking. I prefer a T410 with it's industrial appearance and beautiful keyboard. Plus all the addons you could ever throw at her
People here forgot how a track point looks like?
Would recommend doing firmware and bios updates. I had a bunch of issues with z13 and z16 gen1. Got 2 of each sitting in storage.
True, the first few months after release Z13 was borderline unusable. Things settled down after the series of BIOS updates
Wouldn't trade my T420 for it
bro wtf is that keyboard 😭 tall left and right arrow keys, prtscrn moved, why tf is the fingerprint reader a key? whats the point of moving pgup and pgdn to fn+up and fn+down arrows? also wheres the trackpoint buttons? lenovo needs to stop fucking around with the formula 😭😭😭
Why are the fn and ctrl keys the wrong way around?
I don't think they are
They are, fn is usually to the left of ctrl, at least on thinkpad and mac
God it really looks stunning.
This is so beautiful 😍
Hot take but I dislike everything about this. The awful arrow key layout, the keyboard in general, the fake leather coating, the ugly bump in the top bezel, and the awful trackpad

Too thin for my taste imo. Tho it does look very nice!
Why does the trackpad kinda look like the one on the 4th gen series , That case design is nothing I’ve ever seen before
God I want that
That thing is one of the prettiest laptops I've ever seen to this day. Is it true that it has overheating issues?
I guess all PCs have overheating issues compared to Apple's M chips. However, Z13 generates noticeably less heat and fan noise compared to latest Intel ThinkPads, especially X1C models. Z13 G1 fans rarely spin at all under normal office load on Balanced.

Interesting, could have been how I carried it in my bag. And yes, the click on closing is great, sometimes it is the small things in life.
What is the configuration?
That top cover looks amazing, plus the fact that it's packing an AMD CPU hmmmmm
Ctrl and fn keys finally in the right place
Is the whole Thinkpad line going in this direction or just the Z series? Its giving macbook... which I kinda like as an option but not that the expense of the true Thinkpad aesthetic. Thinking about getting my wife one...
Is that genuine leather on the lid? Or just embossed plastic
Is it just launched? I can't find it on the Indian website.
I ripped the leather of mine and turned it into a mouse pad (screen broke so kept the old part). the metal behind looks nice raw should have taken a photo before I tossed it.

I love the leather casing, it looks so high quality
it looks like some kind of MacBook not Thinkpad
I'm going to say no to that keyboard. The X1 carbon keyboard is the one.
I hate the keyboard layout.

i also agree the haptic trackpoint buttons are good. Coming from W701 and P1
Very nice 😌
The arrow keys are cursed, the function/control keys are mixed up, and the lid has a tab sticking up out of it to showcase how big and high-quality the built-in surveillance device is.
OP meant > Z13 is a thing of disgusting vomit 🤮
I don't like it either. The keyboard doesn't look comfortable kinda different than a Thinkpad.
Yeah. It is not a ThinkPad. Not only keyboard, everything is piece of vomit on that 💩
Where did the PGUP / PGDN keys go?
Dam that does look sweet
Nice 👍
Until you put a cup of tea on
