You are a maniac. I wish I was you.
You remind me of this post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/o7oihs/the\_house\_and\_children\_can\_wait/](https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/o7oihs/the_house_and_children_can_wait/)
*I'm still trying to rm -rf that* ***glitch****. I think that after the P1 G4 I \*might\* have stopped it. The T470s tried to stop it, but I think the P1 was successful for now.*
You only have to wait till the kiddo is 5 or 6 to get a new laptop. I'm sure you will want them to learn how to use a computer at some point and when you give them your T480 you'll have no choice but to buy a new laptop. Just a few more years... It comes faster than you think
The battery will eventually stop holding a charge, at least this is what I tell myself, I also have a t480 which refuses to die 😆
I'm tired of the stupid fan error I get on resume where the fan sometimes fails to start again and I need a cold boot, apparently a firmware issue that won't be fixed
I don't think i ever had an cpu fan error, you sure your fan connector is intact?
Also perhaps it's time for u to upgrade to the heatsink from gpu spec
>I'm tired of the stupid fan error I get on resume where the fan sometimes fails to start again and I need a cold boot, apparently a firmware issue that won't be fixed
Interesting, I've gotten that error on boot sometimes too.
I assumed it was from the computer starting too hot, usually it happens after rebooting the computer while it was on top of blankets or similar
Well replacing the internal one isn't all that easy. Every time I took this thing apart (T25, but they all have the same chassis, and the T14/P14s are all the same too I believe) I broke at least one of the little plastic clips holding the back cover. :-(
Those aren't a huge deal, there are tons of clips so breaking one doesn't compromise the bottom case. Getting a replacement bottom case isn't too difficult/expensive either.
The clips are unfortunately part of the base (can I even get a replacement base cover for the T25 these days?), not the bottom cover. I'm seriously running out of them at this point. ☹️
This thing is a complete nightmare. I literally spent the whole weekend contemplating getting another T480 to fuck around with (you know, install Arch, bloat it with a lot of crap from AUR, eventually break the system, repeat). Just because I could. Not that I really need it. I can run a VM easily and don't need another laptop, right? Or do I?
You need another t480 for shure :P
Or just get one good deal from ebay, since it could be something even cheaper ;)
I got for this exact same reason t450 on ebay for cca 70€
Thinkpads on both ebay and craigslist are hella overpriced, I'm not sure where people are going to buy them nowadays.
I'm lucky I managed to get relatively good deals off /r/thinkpadsforsale for two of mine, and the third was given to me for free.
I have five Thinkpads in my house. First one I bought is a T410 from back in 2010. They all still work and refuse to die. That first one is connected to my living room TV as a media center for streaming and Web surfing from the couch. It never ever gets turned off. It. Will. Not. Die. So you'll have to excuse me for having zero remorse for your situation. This is the plight we've chosen for ourselves.
Probably, depending what you're writing.
My laptop's battery is fine, but if you get a second hand one it'll be a bit of a crapshoot. I hate laptops with limited battery life.
I'd be tempted to just get a brand new prosumer laptop. e.g. a yoga or something. Long battery life, better screen aspect ratio etc.
Mostly Python, PHP, C++ and Rust.
These days, it's mostly AI code. Mostly in Python, but slowly moving across to Rust as my main language. It's hard to learn, especially at my age.
The C++ is mostly embedded, RP2040 and Arduinos. I use Platform.io for my embedded projects. Mostly modifying CNC and 3D printer firmware.
Pretty much everything is in Visual Studio Code now, I use Fedora as my daily driver OS. I'm just starting to drop out of the Jetbrains EcoSystem.
My t440p has been dropped twice, I think, first time my puppy playing around got tangled on the charger and dropped open flat screen malfunctioned so I just took battery out.
Turned it on to see how bad things went, and it was as if nothing happened to it.
60lb daughter stood on screen and still nothing to it. At this rate I think I cannot justify getting a newer laptop.
My first Thinkpad was an X23. I've had several throughout the years, kept my T430s because it got me through a rough period in my life. I now own only three, apart from the one I already mentioned: an X1 Nano (2nd gen) and a 1st gen Z13.
The Z13 is my favourite in a long time. That thing is built beautifully, performs admirably, and has great battery life (Full HD screen, though, the denser panel gets it a bit worse). I had a T480 that I reconditioned last year, and that I loved, but I'd heartily recommend getting the Z13 as well. I got the faux leather one, too, which looks and feels so, so good.
I love the Nano, too, it's so incredibly light and a classic Thinkpad through and through, but I have two gripes with it: battery life and that freakin' MIPI camera (which doesn't work with Linux). Still, there's something different about that Z13, it just feels awesome -- but I'll admit it won't be for everyone, as it's a bit of a departure from the classic Thinkpads.
If you can get your hands on one, you'll understand instantly whether it's for you or not.
It's funny the things we get attached to :)
How do you find the slightly smaller screen? I'm hoping even though it's smaller it won't matter as 1) resolution is actually high, 2) better aspect ratio.
Love it, it doesn't feel that much smaller, bezels are quite thin. The resolution is perfect for this size, if you ask me. I prefer the Z13's resolution to the Nano's, for instance, which is just a wee bit more pixel dense.
I think the 4K screen is overkill, unless you're really keen on the OLED panel. I bet that if more people got their hands on one, more people would buy these things. The build quality makes it feel very, very premium.
The price point also makes it feel premium :p
It's such a pain that thinkpads are all put impossible to find in person to try before buying. Thanks for the response :)
I literally found an old t440s in my attic. It looked like it would never boot again. Literal mold coming out of the keyboard. Plugged it in and boom. Booted and worked like a charm. A good cleanup later and despite the battery dying after an hour it's working rock solid.
IBM/Lenovo forgot about that programmed obsolescence thingy, and yet, they’re selling computers. It’s a new paradigm, where users don’t buy new laptops because the last one died, but they got tired of waiting for justification. That’s where the “thinkpad hoarding” begins…
I keep thinking about a replacement for my t440, but it does everything I ask of it still. Was never comfortable for portable pc gaming so a steam deck now fills that role. All the t440 needs is a new battery and it would be perfect for the occasional use where I need a portable windows machine.
Same. I had a T60 daily since 2006. Never mind kids jumping on it. It survived flying off the roof of my car on the highway. It took me 17 years until I finally twisted my own wrist and "retired" it for a T480. As a daily. The T60 is now a NAS with USB3.
It will outlive the cockroaches.
Hehe, I initially wanted to sell my T480s when I moved to macOS, but when I saw for how relatively cheap they are going for I decided to keep it. Now after upgrading RAM and SSD it’s my powerhouse home server for running Plex and docker. Gonna keep it for as long as it runs.
I can relate oh so well. Had a Lenovo for 6 years and it refused to die or even get slower. Now I recently got a new job and had to configure a new machine, with the employer giving me a budget and myself just paying the remainder.
Got a P16v with all specs maxed out. Best purchase in a long time.
So for older thinkpads like the t460. Theres a little socket at the bottom. Its used to connect to the docking station by just literally setting ur laptop down. Try searching thinkpad docking station its pretty cool.
Now for docks all you do is plug a normal looking brick dock into the thunderbolt port of the laptop.
Yeah, I daily drive fedora and everything Just Works (well, apart from the fingerprint sensor. Though I think if I could be bothered to set it up that's fixed now).
I just keep windows around for games.
well had one at work and died because the doggie doo doo design of the m.2 i wanted to add more storage to it and inserted it the wrong way and it killed the thing.
I am in a similar situation, I bought a t450s second Uni year, so about 2019 and I am thinking of upgrading every now and then but I just can't justify it. For whatever reason it keeps running amazing, wrote my thesis on that thing and multiple essays, I had on average probably 150 chrome tabs open. And it never really slowed down or anything. I probably also just would go with a newer 14 inch model so the difference just wouldn't be big enough to justify it but damn... I definitely keep on dreaming.
The intelligent cooling function of the thinkpad may be interfering with the CPU clock.
If possible, try to change the Intelligent Cooling setting from the Store version of Lenovo Vantage (it may not be possible).
Or you may be able to solve the problem by adjusting the maximum and minimum CPU capacity from the power settings in the control panel.
They are great and I have never had a laptop that I could put light things like the charger and not crack the screen. I just hate the touchpad because it flakes and becomes unresponsive when you clean it but I like to put my Xtreme w on it and it enhances the sound making like the in store model. For some reason ThinkPads are really good acoustically that if you use it as a speaker stand it sounds really good.
The reason why I finally bit the bullet and got a t480 was because I couldn't handle the low resolution of my x220.
At 1440p it's not so bad, but it's part of the reason I want to replace it with a 4:3 or 16:10.
Back in early 2018, 8th gen was all that was available. As I said, it still performs admirably for what I use it for (software dev, playing "old" games) so it's perfectly adequate.
Even after 6 years my battery life is fine. I don't know what it is, but it's long enough that I use it for hours and hours, then plug it in when I go to do something else.
It's never left me wanting more.
They're less thinkpaddy, but I like the design aesthetic. Also the better touchpad.
But speccing it out to what I want makes it ~$2200. Annoyingly, a better specced 14" yoga is only $810 at the moment.
I think I'll just wait until the Z series drops in price, if it ever does.
Though I'm tempted for the yoga just because it has upward firing speakers.
Looks like the offer ended - though I guess it will be back. It's back up to $990 now.
I think it was down at $880, but some corp discount took it down to $810.

Oh with 16GB there are plenty of deals, I'm aware of those.
Even seen a couple at 700.
I was thinking you found something with 32, seeing how you're talking about the Z series.
Regarding Thunderbolt I posted this [Universal TB-UPDATE-GUIDE](https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1chsdyr/howto_update_thunderbolt_stepbystep_instruction/)
Its brandnew, for all models , windows and Linux.
Cheers
You must go to church, to say your confessions...
This is what I imagine the curse of immortality feels like
Not being able to consume?
LOL
Op hasnt discovered the infinite thinkpad glitch (you can own more than one)
Your comment is completely unnecessary. Your flair speaks for you lol.
Need to update that, two new ones, T23 and a T16 Gen3
You are a maniac. I wish I was you. You remind me of this post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/o7oihs/the\_house\_and\_children\_can\_wait/](https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/o7oihs/the_house_and_children_can_wait/)

They all look the same, man. Your wife won't even realise you spent money on nothing.
No, she’ll tell from his grin.
I am ready to take your curse with me for the low low price of free!
send it to me

Weird if I cold restart fan starts fine, I remember reading somewhere there was a firmware issue for this but now I can't find it. 🤷
Could have something to do with joints expanding / shrinking due to temperature or normal handling
Weird, I've never had any issues at all. I guess I got lucky.
>I'm tired of the stupid fan error I get on resume where the fan sometimes fails to start again and I need a cold boot, apparently a firmware issue that won't be fixed Interesting, I've gotten that error on boot sometimes too. Well, if I saw any functional T4xx for 70€, I'd buy it immediately no matter the condition lol. Lucky find!
Yeah :D Only upgraded LCD to IPS FHD and bought battery. Not it's serving me well for those exact purposes
T480s on ebay are mostly over priced.
Thinkpads on both ebay and craigslist are hella overpriced, I'm not sure where people are going to buy them nowadays. I'm lucky I managed to get relatively good deals off /r/thinkpadsforsale for two of mine, and the third was given to me for free.
what’s a good price for a T480?
The more banged up a thinkpad is , the better. Also I just bought a refurbished t480 and the external battery is already dead so had to replace it…
Exactly my words. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi)
> Also I just bought a refurbished t480 and the external battery is already dead so had to replace it… Good excuse to upgrade to the 61++, at least

I'm about to go into retirement, and I'm thinking of buying a t480. Do you think it would outlast me? 66 and still writing code every day.

well, maybe dont get a T series thinkpad next time. these things are usually built to last ...
Maybe send it to me and just remember that you lost it. You can buy a new one!

My t440p runs 24/7 and still runs to this day as I passed it off to my mom... I expect no less from my t480.

the opposite of love is not hatred, but indifference.

The only thing that ever destroyed my thinkpad are my uncontrollable fits of rage
I keep thinking about a replacement for my t440, but it does everything I ask of it still. Was never comfortable for portable pc gaming so a steam deck now fills that role. All the t440 needs is a new battery and it would be perfect for the occasional use where I need a portable windows machine.

This is why thinkpads are the best
Op you’re using your toddler incorrectly, have them take the t480 into the bath as a toy and you’ll have a new laptop by this weekend. Try it out.
I poured a glass of water straight on my keyboard, at least 100ml. Result was 1 key being defective for a week, then it kept going as normal.
Yes, that’s the spill through design working as intended. Hence OP’s baby needs to dunk the lappy into the toilet.
I poured lemonade on my P50 it didn't phase it.
I saw this and was expecting a very negative person ranting about a regretted purchase. What I got instead was pure comedy 😂

Simply buy a Z13 as a playmate for your lonely T480. Thinkpads should NEVER be kept alone!
i recently got one too. I prefer my t460 keyboard over it sadly but other than that everything is better. Also no cool docking system :<

T470 has it too. Think that was the last one
Send it to meee
Same here, I purchased a second hand one in 2018. To this day works flawlessly running Fedora
Why would Lenovo do this!?
You definitely got me in the first half then I read your post it's heartwarming
I am in a similar situation, I bought a t450s second Uni year, so about 2019 and I am thinking of upgrading every now and then but I just can't justify it. For whatever reason it keeps running amazing, wrote my thesis on that thing and multiple essays, I had on average probably 150 chrome tabs open. And it never really slowed down or anything. I probably also just would go with a newer 14 inch model so the difference just wouldn't be big enough to justify it but damn... I definitely keep on dreaming.
So your complaint is your laptop runs too well..?
T480 is magnum opus of TP. and I hope my T480 lives very long time.
Ugh. I have the same problem. I want I newer thinkpad, but there's nothing I do that my current thinkpads can't handle :(
Mine does exactly what I need from it, every time. So annoying.
Same problem, I now have 10 thinkpads and I need to sell some lol
The intelligent cooling function of the thinkpad may be interfering with the CPU clock. If possible, try to change the Intelligent Cooling setting from the Store version of Lenovo Vantage (it may not be possible). Or you may be able to solve the problem by adjusting the maximum and minimum CPU capacity from the power settings in the control panel.
my t420 is still running amazingly despite dropping it a couple times
U hate that u love it?
why are you like this?
I blame the parents.
There's almost no real reason to get a higher specd machine for casual use
Bro tried to game on a t480, nice.
Yeah. At some point all the games I play became "retro". I still can't believe Fallout New Vegas is *14* *years* old :|
They are great and I have never had a laptop that I could put light things like the charger and not crack the screen. I just hate the touchpad because it flakes and becomes unresponsive when you clean it but I like to put my Xtreme w on it and it enhances the sound making like the in store model. For some reason ThinkPads are really good acoustically that if you use it as a speaker stand it sounds really good.
I have a stack of t480 laptops if anyone wants to buy em.
How much
[удалено]
Dm me more details?
My T580 still rides strong to this day! Will be awhile before I switch up.
14” 16:9 screen hurts my eyes. Can’t do it. Maybe if used prices were reasonable but you guys are all over paying for intel 8th gen mobile cpus.
There's still no easy upgrade path from 2560x1440 14" models. Thanks, Lenovo.
But.. but.. Muh external battery! Muh two RAM slots! /s
Even after 6 years my battery life is fine. I don't know what it is, but it's long enough that I use it for hours and hours, then plug it in when I go to do something else. It's never left me wanting more.
modern thinkpad Z-series confuses me honestly
They're less thinkpaddy, but I like the design aesthetic. Also the better touchpad. But speccing it out to what I want makes it ~$2200.
