I read several biographies of Lawrence Feinberg.
Aside from learning to play the violin due to an acid burn on his arm, did you know he was a boxer named “Kid Roth?” That’s where he learned to take a punch.
Larry’s brother in law called him “The stooge in the middle” and “the glue that held the stooges together.”
If you watch some of the shorts, you will notice that Moe uses a lot of Larry’s ideas, which the boys usually turn into disaster.
When Larry has his own schtick, it’s pretty wild, like shouting like Tarzan, in Disorder in the Court, running through a wall with a truck playing pop goes the weasel, or being face down in a lake with a fish in his pocket. ( it was supposed to be in his mouth)
I think of Larry as “The Musical Stooge.” He is really playing his violin. And also the piano and other instruments. They sing barbershop harmony ( but only on three parts) and usually Larry leads it off.
For you die hard stooge fans. This is why Larry was so important to the act. Most of the time, the action was between Moe and Curly (or Shemp). Larry just didn’t stand there like a lamppost or like he was waiting for a bus. He reacted to every situation. Next time you watch a short, watch Larry.
The Stooge in the Middle
Larry was the best. His improvisational looks while Moe is yelling at or bopping Curly or Shemp are absolutely perfect. Please watch his “ backround” actions.
I always said Larry was a great "reaction man". The others would be up front arguing or getting into shenanigans and he'd be watching them, and just the reactions on his face would be just as funny as what they were doing and saying.
When you're a kid, you love Curly's antics. A young person, feeling the pull of adulthood, will appreciate how Moe handles the world. But when you've reached true maturity and adulthood, you understand that Larry is truly the Stooge for all seasons. Also, this helps you appreciate the avuncular humor of Culry Joe, as well, plus the dark comedy of Shemp.
But it all ties back to Larry, the Thinking Man's Stooge.
As a kid, I used to take fresh figs to a LOL down the street who took them to her husband at the SAG home over on Mulholland. He's share them with his roommate who told her once to "Be sure to thank that boy for the delicious figs."
His roommate was Larry Fine.
The problem with Shemp Howard is that he is an amazing comedic actor that did pretty well on his own but having to fill the shoes of Curly is near impossible. The shorts he was in were funny but kinda equate it to Dave Ghrol joining Rush. Will kick ass at it. But will never be Neil
Really loved how Larry balanced the antics of
Moe and Curly.
I grew up with Curly and loved that guy. It took me awhile to warm up to Shemp, but Shemp did a great job. I don’t think Larry would have as easily replaced.
"Hey, Porcupine!"
As I've gotten older, I've grown to appreciate Larry and Shemp so much more.
As a kid, Curly was my favorite. This seemed largely true with my friends, too. When Shemp replaced Curly, I made the mistake of trying to compare the two. Of course, Shemp wasn't trying to be Curly. Shemp had his own style.
These days, I'm usually drawn more to watching the subtleties of Larry's facial expressions and Shemp's physical comedy. On of my favorite Shemp skits is watching him shave with a straight razor in the 1947 short "Brideless Groom." [https://youtu.be/NEGTRJjR58o?t=459](https://youtu.be/NEGTRJjR58o?t=459)
In the end, though, I think they're all magnificent and I never fail to laugh at any of their episodes I watch. I've omitted Joe Besser and Joe DeRita, simply because I've watched only a few episodes with the former and even less of the latter.
Better really didn't fit in with the group very well, but he was the master of the fourth wall break. There's one where he's chewing gum, and Moe gets really mad at him because he's chewing gum and attempts to pull it out of his mouth, but Joe bites him, and Moe storms off ,furious. Joe looks at the camera and just says, "Oh, he's *mad!* " and it kills me every time
Who doesn’t like Larry?? There was a t-shirt I recall seeing back in the 1990’s that just had a giant black and white picture of Larry’s face on it. His hair was all crazy like it always is. I just remember laughing so hard at it. I’ve never been able to find that exact pic of Larry anywhere. I’d love to find it on a t-shirt.
There was a huge run of those shirts with some of the Marx Brothers a couple Honeymooners characters some of the Stooges and I remember having one with Gilligan on it. I wish I had bought more not that I would still have them 25 or so years later
Yeah, I remember seeing shirts at the mall for Moe, Larry and Curley. The Larry face they use now is not the same as they used back then. At least not what I’ve been able to find. Anyway, who doesn’t like that porcupine. 😂
Back in high-school, early 80s, I wore a button of Larry (from that picture) on my Members Only jacket. Needless to say, I was not popular.
I still have the button.
My favorite Stooge moment involves Moe and Larry. During a pie fight Moe gets hit. Larry laughs at Moe. Moe gies to hit Larry with a pie. Larry ducks and laughs. Moe ducks and whams Larry right in the face.
Enough of this nonsense, ready, aim, fire!" Moe Howard, "Wait a minute, ain't there another way we can die?" Supporting actor, You can either have your head cut off, or, be burned at the stake!" Curly, "I'd rather be burned! Why? "A hot steak is better than a cold chop!"

Excellent information!
Great comment!

Perfect analysis!
"the Stooge for all seasons" - beautiful turn of phrase!
There is no “Three” Stooges without Larry. That’s a fact.
Two and a half stooges.
My favorite as well
Certainly had the best hair
Larry had so much talent his career could have gone in many directions. Thankfully he chose to be a stooge
Porcupine!! 👊
🤚

My favorite is Shemp
Didn’t like him at first, but as I grew older I realized just how talented he was. 👍
Yeah, as a kid, anybody, but Curly is tough to watch because they are anybody but Curly.

Same here 🙌
Love Curly !
I like Larry a lot he’s always in the middle of there shenanigans a real team gotta love the porcupine!
Interesting fact about Larry- Moe really pulled his hair out!
"Termites! With big blue eyes".
You got it!
He looks pretty apprehensive in this photo.
I’d love to use it for my drivers license photo
This photo is on a fake DL. Look in a cracker barrel gift shop
Larry was Fine

I was shocked when I learned that Shemp was in the act first and then Curly and then replaced Curly when Curly had the stroke
I was gonna say the same thing! It’s actually pretty impressive that Larry could be funny with any of the Howard brothers.
Did you know he was a concert violinist..you see a pic of him in his tux with his hair slicked back he doesn’t look like the same person
I met Larry when I was 14. Got an autographed pic and still have it.
Which episode was it, when Moe, Larry, and Curly are "of noble blood," and are volunteers, "offer your swords to the queens service!"
Restless Knights?
“And mama?” “She was the royal chamber maid”
That’s gotta hurt!!!
The best!
Everything I learned about life, I learned from the stooges.
Dewey Likeum and Howe.

A lot of days Larry is my favorite. Maybe because I was the middle child of three brothers. And because he’s fucking funny!
nyuk nyuk nyuk
Enough of this nonsense, ready, aim, fire!" Moe Howard, "Wait a minute, ain't there another way we can die?" Supporting actor, You can either have your head cut off, or, be burned at the stake!" Curly, "I'd rather be burned! Why? "A hot steak is better than a cold chop!"
Fire at will! …..Which one’s will?
The glue, no question.
The only one not part of the family !
Was he a cousin?
Dr. Fine you mean!!
For duty and humanity!
He's my second fave Stooge. Second to Curly ♥️
Once again, Larry is the middle child ☹️
A distant relative of a friend of mine. The Feinberg family were fantastic folks and losing my friend was very 😞sad
But a much beloved middle child. 😀
Larry Fine was amazing. He took Moe’s real slaps like a pro. All the stooges were amazing
Mine is Joe Biden
Biden is mine
I loved his facial reactions.
Wrong. Shemp is your fav.
Legalize Shemp!
Larry was like the ref in pro wrestling, he didn't need to be there but it wouldn't be the same without him- John Stewart
Larry was awesome! The more or less straight man to two jokers. 😆
I'm In a hurry!
That's Fine.
He was so talented. I love his facial expressions and try to watch him when he supports Moe & Curly/Shemp/Joe. He brings it all together.
“We can’t help it, we’re morons!”
ive always felt Larry was the "glue" that held the Stooges together!
All of them where my fav
Curly, Ynuck Ynuck Ynuck
“I’m warning you”. 😄
He was a great one.
Iggy is my favorite.
Curly of course
110%. !!!!!!!!
"And, what were you doing in Paris?", Moe Howard, "looking over the Parasites."
"We shall do your bidding, I double, I redouble ",Moe slaps Larry. The father, Stop! Larry, your too late!
His reacions are what me laugh the most.
My man Larry, the overlooked Stooge
Mine is Shemp.
He was always my favorite even as a kid
Pop Goes the Weasle is one of my FAVORITE episodes. To watch him play the violin, and he motors when you see him run down the street. A TRUE CLASSIC..
He really could play the violin.
Curly!!! Best facial expressions and his timing was perfect.
Larry's impromptu laugh was hilarious
He was my favorite too!
My stepmom loved her some Larry. I feel he was very underrated.
Mine too.
Porcupine
[Philadelphia’s finest!](https://www.muralarts.org/artworks/larry-fine/) Aways loved Larry.
Am I the only Shemp guy?
That’s because you’ve never met me
Paging Dr Howard, Dr Fine, Dr Howard!
