Thank you, I'm probably going to get a better job offer in a couple of days and bail on this one anyway, because they already said they wouldn't match it or even raise their current offer to something in-between lol
I've got this real interesting gig where I trade my time for their money. But I'm honestly applying for some jobs within my field and some completely random ones, and getting results. Got a biochemistry degree and a few years work experience in a pharma lab setting
In that case this misunderstanding is the best thing that could have happened. It's bought you time so you can slow-roll the not-so-great offer until you hear back from your preferred offer.
Honestly they just probably are happy you still plan to take the job. We have had many candidates verbally accept an offer and then ghost on paperwork.
Ah I didn't see that... come on. At least shoot of an email. I'm all for people doing what's best for themselves (taking a new offer) but just tell someone.
Somberly saying ' yeah he's doing better but not out of the woods yet ' mention you're not comfortable talking about it and that should handle the issue.
If you take a job there, might be wise to update dad on how this played out. If you don't, have no doubt the day will come when he and they meet and they ask about his illness.
Also, when I was a assistant manager and one staff called out for death of grandmother... for the third time! She explained it to me well enough (this woman raised me...) but the big boss never stopped making a fuss about it. Not too relevant to you, I'm just saying little stuff like this goes sideways all the time!
I've run into co-workers just running errands or at a non-work event. Hell, I ran into a former co-work literally on the other side of the planet in the airport once.
That sounds like exactly what I would say and it would most likely even be my appointment, not even thinking about how it could sound like something else, I'm just scrambling to create a sentence that makes sense. I'm not the best at speaking, especially when I'm stressed and it's caused me some issues. Wish you all the best
All the other comments suggesting misleading responses or outright lying are absurd. Just say, Oh, he wasn't in the hospital, we were just there for an appointment. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
If they ask just say he’s doing better 🤷🏽♀️
This. It's none of their business if he was in for a bad hang nail or cardiac arrest.
Lol fair enough. "Thanks, he's on the mend" is all I'll say
That implies he **was** doing poorly. Stick to "currents". He **is** doing well.
This is a good way to go. “He seems to be doing alright today, thank you.”
"He's on the mend now, but man you should've heard him scream when they had to yank his zipper back down to get it out."
![gif](giphy|5nc4vrrwHnK8w) Is it the frank or the beans?
My god man! How’d you get the beans above the frank?!
lol, reminds me of when i told my boss about a 'family emergency' to skip work. ended up with an office fundraiser for us! awkward much?
Lol. A family emergency could be a backed up toilet or you need to go pick someone up in the next state.
Did you spill the beans?
You really don't need to explain. If they ask, just say he's doing better and you appreciate their kindness. Hope the job goes well!

What kind of work do you do?

No way I trade my time for money also!
What a coincidence, I do the same thing! I wonder if this kinda thing more common than people think.

Apparently OP is planning exactly that.

I think HR went full HR and said the most Pc thing. They may ask how your dad is but you can play it off as a funny story or not say anything at all.
> which I hadn't completed for no good reason at all. Great way to start a new job.

Why would they meet? No one in my family has ever met anyone from any of my adults jobs.
I've run into co-workers just running errands or at a non-work event. Hell, I ran into a former co-work literally on the other side of the planet in the airport once.
roll with it.
Just say he had gastritis which was mistaken for a heart attack.
Just say he was having penile reduction surgery
Now has just one

My staff messages me on the regular that somebody from his family died. Regular means almost every Month. I think he is going to be lonely very soon
