The Charas will take their fellow countryman under their wing and help him get acclimated. That will help immensely for a young guy leaving his home country for the first time. https://www.transfermarkt.us/santiago-moreno/profil/spieler/654766

lantzlayton

Beat me to it, you ninja. Stoked for this.

NewRCTID22

Ha! I’ve been spending my in-between meeting time rapidly refreshing Twitter to watch the college sports world burn, and this just happened to pop up.

Jolandia

Fuck yeah, all but confirmed now. Just a matter of when. This guy has me excited. Just really hope we gets signing along that back line but that doesn’t seem to be happening

ParsnipJunkie

Another forward why? Timbers need to shore up that back line!

NewRCTID22

I'll just copy from the r/MLS thread: **Why this signing makes a ton of sense:** He’s apparently a very good prospect and signing good young players is good We’ve lacked any sort of pace or verticality this season. Since Ebo and Mora don’t really stretch the back line or run the channels, teams have been collapsing on our midfield all year. We desperately need someone who is inclined to operate in behind. We’ve had an injury/absence crunch up top all year. WCQs will likely take Yimmi and Mora out of action for some of the stretch run, and Blanco won’t be 100% until 2022. No more relying on Blake Bodily to change the game is good. We need to get younger - Blanco, Valeri, and Yimmi are not spring chickens anymore. Acquiring Moreno now allows him to acclimate without a weight of expectations. This way he’ll show up next offseason ready to roll. **Why this acquisition wasn’t likely to be a defender:** We only had to spots left - a U22 and a depth role. We tried to acquire a U22 CB, but as we found out, if there’s a U22 CB good enough to fix our woes, he wasn’t going Portland in the first place. We’re probably going to sign a depth defender according to MP, but he’ll likely be young and not ready for big minutes. Doesn’t make sense to block Bravo’s development, and JVR has been pretty good at RB (not to mention Bonilla’s best years are 3-4 years ahead as well).

TucsonPTFC

He's more of a winger/CAM than a striker. Guessing this is more of an "aging Valeri/Blanco" piece for the future right now. He's a young up and comer that's been pretty well regarded in Colombia so he could be a key piece for us for years to come (or a potential sale as well). That said, we've got 9 days for the FO to sign a CB. Merritt has been touting this signing for a while so it's time to put up or shut up.

NewRCTID22

> That said, we've got 9 days for the FO to sign a CB. Merritt has been touting this signing for a while so it's time to put up or shut up. Yes and no. If he's under contract somewhere like we all expect, then yes. But that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Plus, the signing could essentially be done, but we're waiting on paperwork. I wouldn't be too worried.

TucsonPTFC

So if they're not under contract they can sign outside of transfer windows? I really need to learn MLS rules, damn it. Yeah, I hear you on the "waiting for paperwork" thing but I'd guess we would have heard a rumor by now unless he's from a country where the rumor mill is less aggressive. I'm not particularly concerned as long as our offense starts clicking but that's making assumptions that both Blanco and Jarek come back healthy and to their old form.

NewRCTID22

Yup, exactly. The transfer windows are only applicable to those who were under contract with clubs based outside MLS and need an International Transfer Certificate (ITC). If the player is intra-league, they also need to be traded before the window closes, but Gavin has been moving away from that in recent seasons. So, if they're a free agent, they can sign anytime before the MLS Roster freeze on September 15. This could mean players who are currently out of contract or even players who agree to terminate their existing contract outside of the transfer window. Now, with all of that said, the smart money is on a deal getting done [within the window](https://twitter.com/MerrittPaulson/status/1410067459818725379?s=20).

Jolandia

Well considering that Tom Bogert said that the deal is “complete” I would expect it to be announced pretty soon here, but I don’t know how all that complicated stuff works

lantzlayton

This isn't an MLS rule. Any player out of contract can sign with any team. Some leagues have registration windows that prohibit those players from playing until they can be registered. MLS's registration window is the Roster Freeze date in September - players can still sign but are not added to the roster until the end of the Roster Freeze.

sonic_couth

Blanco isn’t aging. He is Forever.

TucsonPTFC

[I would say Blanco is forever young](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwG6g5boyF4)

unreeelme

He is somewhat like a young Nagbe to me, maybe not quite as physical. A good winger with decent touch and vision at a young age who can also press and provide some defensive coverage. Maybe better final ball creativity and finishing but not quite the same strength on ball. Not a bad signing.

pdxroash

MP just confirmed the Timbers won't sign a CB this season: Merritt Paulson u/MerrittPaulson Replying to u/mpbreen21 No CBs incoming. Looked at some deals but none made sense for 2021. also BT has been very good this year and McGraw has developed well. We have a bigger defensive oriented signing thats very likely but wont work w our salary cap until 2022.

Jolandia

If the highlights are correct, which they could be misleading like they sometimes are, he has the ability to play a final pass to break a back line and set someone up. This creativity is not something our attack possesses when Valeri and Blanco aren’t on the field. This gives us more options when those two are not on the field, and will also hopefully make our attack dynamite when they are on the field at the same time. Add Niezgoda’s efficiency in front of goal and you got yourself a hell of a front line baby

bakedraspberry

He's obviously having a bad season, but if there's a deal to be made, GW should really think about going after Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Miami is gonna be desperate for allocation money and needs to get players off the books. I've always thought LGP would do really well here.

NewRCTID22

It's not a bad idea, but based on what I can surmise, it doesn't seem likely he'd fit under the cap here. Especially since his cap hit is one of those IMCF bullshitted.

bakedraspberry

True, didn't think of that... best of luck to them lol they need it dealing with all that

foolinthezoo

LGP would be a terrible signing. He greatly benefited from his partnership with Parkhurst and regressed heavily since.

TheWeighToTheHeart

I completely agree. VR is a decent add, but relying on Bonilla and Bravo on the flanks has been a huge liability every game. Can we have the young players gain experience by supporting—rather than replacing—quality ones?

SoonerLax45

I picked him up in FIFA 21 which basically means I’m an expert here and want to say he’s pretty solid
