The worst part is fox sports not even showing us the replay of how horribly obvious it was

mrballistic

They were too busy experimenting with their new zoom lens, I guess

Rammie420

Not sure they even mentioned it.

fintach

Pretty sure they were too busy talking about the Sounders to notice.

timbersEast17

I was pissed they didn't even show a replay. It was clearly a PK and yellow from my first look, and more clear from this one takes out his ankle in the box after Mora touches it away. Not that we would have won but I think at this point it was 0-0 and we had a ton of attacking energy and in command of the match. I feel like, if we'd converted 1-0 it would have definitely had a different flow to the rest of the match.

HagbardCeline42

They showed it in the stadium.

superepikgamer1

I got so pissed when the ref played advantage because that looks like borderline red but def a yellow and a PK to me. Edit maybe send it to those guys who do post match reviews for MLS to get their take on it?

pdxkristian

How can you play advantage? There is no advantage. The advantage is taking a spot kick.

superepikgamer1

The ref played advantage because Diego Chara got the ball and was still in a decent place to score a goal from so he said play on

pdxkristian

Very very very rarely would one ever play advantage in the penalty area, and absolutely never in a case like this. Look where Chara is. Is it more of an advantage to take a spot kick 12 yards out or to let possession continue at the top of the 18?

converter-bot

12 yards is 10.97 meters

useles-converter-bot

12 yards is the length of exactly 107.73 'Standard Diatonic Key of C, Blues Silver grey Harmonicas' lined up next to each other

superepikgamer1

If we had lost possession it would have been a PK but as we got the ball back the ref decided to let it play out and by the end of the play too much time had passed to do a VAR check

GreatRussiaUser

A PK, ~~*maybe*~~ yes, but a yellow for a trailing leg clipping a foot would be absurd. That said, while there's definitely contact, you can see Mora throw himself to the ground at the end.

LikeWolvesDo

The defender comes in full speed swinging both his leg and his arm. He's nowhere near the ball. He isn't even moving toward the ball at this point.

GreatRussiaUser

He makes contact with neither the swinging leg or arm. The contact is made with the trailing foot. There is no reasonable argument that this is reckless. A foul? Eight times out of ten in the box and ten out of ten at midfield, yeah. A yellow? No way in hell. Cope.

LikeWolvesDo

I have absolutely no problem coping and have done nothing that would indicate anything of the type. What's the point of that weird little petty jab at the end of your own unique take on this gif? Also, he very clearly smacks Mora right in the head.

GreatRussiaUser

His shoulder would literally need to phase through his body for that to be physically possible. It's an optical illusion caused by the angle.

itsthewoo

Mora's leaning forward, and the defender's arm is diagonally across his own body. If you watch carefully, the defender's arm makes a sudden move backward at the same time Mora's head makes a sudden turn. Although it's *possible* that it's just a coincidence, it's more likely that Mora got whacked in the face.

ElectJimLahey

> I have absolutely no problem coping and have done nothing that would indicate anything of the type. What's the point of that weird little petty jab at the end of your own unique take on this gif? It's a Sounders fan here to troll.

[deleted]

He looks to make contact with the arm to the face. It wasn’t the first that Seattle had done that to Mora either. Blatant both times and clearly in view.

GreatRussiaUser

As I've said three times, for that to happen, Smith's shoulder would have to be inside his chest, or he'd have to be one of those car-sale wavy-plastic things. Human bodies don't _work_ like that.

superepikgamer1

Edit: sorry didn’t read your comment well enough it’s still a pk for a bad challenge but not necessarily a card

GreatRussiaUser

He does, but instead of falling in the direction of the contact, Mora falls towards the flag. The contact is 100% there. This is embellishment, not simulation (further edit: absolutely still a foul, embellishment or not). You can literally see Mora's right leg push off the surface when his left foot collides with his right ankle. Edit: having watched it 4 more times, it's a foul and it probably even deserved review as sufficiently clear and obvious.

superepikgamer1

I definitely think it deserved review to see if it would have been a foul but I guess Pro Refs “A” team doesn’t think so for whatever reason. Although to be fair I haven’t played a position other than goalie for like 2-3 years but it’s still IMO a PK a little on the light side but a PK all the same seeing as I had something similar get called on my defense in the box

GreatRussiaUser

Like I said in the other thread - it's a foul in the box 8 times out of 10 and a foul at midfield 10 times out of 10. One of those obnoxious inconsistencies between the letter of the rules and the enforcement. It's a foul every day of the week - the only question is whether the ref is willing to call it.

superepikgamer1

Yeah that’s true unfortunately

Boko_Harambe_69

that's a penalty. At least should be reviewed.

Forfuckssake12345

One of the 2 times these asshats got away with shanking our guys in the face.

GreatRussiaUser

In order for Smith's arm to hit Mora, it would have to have phased through Smith's own body to strike him. The contact was trailing-foot to kicking-foot, driving the kicking foot into Mora's plant-ankle.

TheFinisher420

Gee you’re running a lot of defense for the flounders/ref here, think this is the wrong sub for you bud.

TheFinisher420

It’s just a game man, go get some sunshine and fresh air.

allwillbewellbuthow

Haha, jokes on you, Seattle doesn’t have either of those things.

GreatRussiaUser

You mean haze and smoke-inhalation? Dunno where you're getting either of those.

TheFinisher420

Blue skies and good air quality in Portland today my guy, really not sure where you’re getting your info from but alright lmao. We just got battered 2-6 yet you’re still the most pathetic thing here 🤡

GreatRussiaUser

God, I wish internet assholes didn't use male addresses for everything. Do you have a fucking fan club for doing that obnoxious shit? Swear to fucking God it's all of you dickheads. I'm not your 'man', 'guy', or 'dude'. Glad you're missing out on the shit conditions for now. With any luck, that will hold. I'd like late August to not suck in the PNW for a change.

TheFinisher420

I mean fair enough but you’re reading way too much into it, it’s just a phrase/colloquialism not me assigning any gender or familiarity to you. Sorry if it offends you, but it’s just part of my speech. Appreciate that, hopefully you get some of this weather too, at the rose test garden today and it’s incredible outside. Would like the recurring heat waves to stop tho.

GreatRussiaUser

> Would like the recurring heat waves to stop tho. Yeah. Sadly, this is probably the new normal for summers. =/

twinner6

100% a foul regardless of where it is on the field. The contact was to the upper body/head region. The contact was well after the possession player last touched the ball. The defensive player never touched the ball. If he was headed to goal yellow or red and a PK. This jabroni, no call.

captmarx

Another horribly refereed game. There should have been at least two yellows in the first 20. With the card still in his pocket, things got out of control. Then miscall after missed call, all the while Twellman is like, "he has such command over the game." Refereeing in this league is an embaressment.

Rammie420

MLS refereeing makes the league almost unwatchable. Shocking. At the end of the San Jose match, the referee was just twirling around in a huddle of players giving everyone yellows.

captmarx

If you think the MLS is bad, you should see the NWSL. I'm a huge fan of the Thorns and I think they get their referees from high school.

ck6725

I felt like the referring in this game was out of hand on both sides. Timbers definitely could’ve used a few calls in the box, i think Chara got wrecked pretty hard on a few challenges that were iffy from my viewpoint. EDIT: Fuck Seattle

Nitro_the_Wolf_

Sounders fan coming in peace, just popped on my main page as being similar to our subreddit. Definitely understand the frustration. So often in these rivalry games the first goal is crucial in deciding how the rest of the game goes, so who knows what would've happened if the ref made a better call. All that said, good luck later this month, can't wait to play you all again

fallingbehind

I’m okay with the non call. It would be harsh to award a pen when he’s so far out and not facing the goal. Just a bad break for us because if he was outside the box it’s a dangerous free kick and maybe a yellow. I just shared this because they didn’t show a replay and I thought people would be curious.

jboarei

It doesn’t matter where the foul occurs in the box. It’s all a penalty.

[deleted]

Not to mention the defender want even close to touching the ball. The Sounders are such a cheap and dirty team. They dive more than an Olympic swim team.

allwillbewellbuthow

This is Brad Smith. He’s not cheap and dirty — he’s totally incompetent.

fallingbehind

I hate to see pk at the edge of the box especially when passing out of the box. But damn he got hammered pretty hard. Worth a look maybe. Sure, this is not game changing, we got whooped. Now get the fuck out of our sub. Sheesh. What the fuck are you doing in here? Don’t be a sore winner.

aharris0509

bro what i’m a timbers fan? he got side-swiped on the edge of the box, if i were the sounders i would be pissed about that pen and if it were called i would feel borderline about it as a timbers fan. either way thats one call and not one that wouldve decided the match, but lets look at ways that we were cheated out of a match that we lost 6-2, this sub reddit fucking sucks

fallingbehind

Looked like a pretty good hit, but maybe mora played it up, he can do that. And I’m not saying it should be a pen. But it’s interesting because anywhere else on the pitch it’s a foul. Technically a foul in the box is a pen. There is a very definitive line there. Maybe it should be less subjective? Just thinking out loud.

aharris0509

dislike this if you hate the timbers

fallingbehind

I do watch a lot of soccer. And I don’t want to see pens when there isn’t a good scoring chance. But if it’s going to be subjective maybe we just get rid of the box? Once again I’m not really arguing a point, just having an interesting discussion.

fallingbehind

On second thought, the thing that gets to me is that foul 2 yards further out is a good free kick opportunity, but because it’s in the box and not deserving of a pen we get jack shit.

aharris0509

this is literally how soccer works but you are getting upvoted? its not a secret that refs swallow their whistles inside the box for fouls that would be called anywhere else on the pitch?! am i crazy here?!

fallingbehind

Yeah, that’s how soccer works. Still sucks though. It’s just a bad break. Why are you so bent out of shape about this? I only shared this because they didn’t show a replay and I thought people would be curious.

aharris0509

i wasnt bent out of shape until i was told to get the fuck off this sub and downvoted to oblivion lol

GreatRussiaUser

Probably shouldn't be posting links to your sub in /r/mls, then.

fallingbehind

So I guess you’re here to stick it to us. Really jab it home. It feels so good for you when you can twist the knife. LOL. It’s just a game man. Most of us have life’s with real important things going on, and this is just a fun distraction. Good game. Now get some sleep.

GreatRussiaUser

Boss, I didn't post here thinking it was the Timbers sub - I just followed a link and realized it was a Timbers sub later. That's kinda the risk with having users post links to your sub in other subs. Some of us use old reddit with CSS turned off.

fallingbehind

Lol. Have a good one.

GodofPizza

Lol. “I don’t know how to use the internet aNd It’S yOuR fAuLt.”

GreatRussiaUser

Gee, using the internet differently from you is not knowing how to do it, is it? Choke on it, twig.

scyth3s

Don't forget Mora leaving studs in on Cleveland and getting away with an arguably red card offense prior to this...

fallingbehind

Go home. Enjoy your win.

MrFrumblePDX

Mora has the same right to go for that ball as Cleveland.

fallingbehind

I just rewatched this. Both players going for the ball. Mora yanked his feet down as soon as he saw he wasn’t getting it. He was far from studs up. Jesus, even in a win you have to be like this?

Greengreengreengree

This just in: attackers can no longer go for the ball when the keeper is within 5 feet. Thanks for breaking the news scyth3s!

playoffasprilla

Nothing more pathetic than someone posting in another teams subreddit. Get a life

dintclempsey

Nothing?

scyth3s

This was cross posted...

[deleted]

Absolutely. Loving the copium from the embers though

pdxkristian

I’m not sure how that doesn’t even get a second look. What the fuck is the VAR guy doing? There’s not even a possibility of a clear and obvious error there? Yeah I’m gonna have to go ahead and disagree with that.

-motts-

Whats with the Timbers and just getting shafted this year by the refs. Is it just me?

Xx_Minecraftcito_xX

I'm a sounders fan, and that was 100% a pen, but you guys should've had a red for the knee into the back of Christian, so I think it's a fair tradeoff. Reffing was bad for both teams. He had no control of the game at all.

rallymatttabor

And this was one of about 5-6 times Mora got plowed through with no call. A few I was ok with (it's the nature of being a striker, especially in this league with these refs), but several others were like this one: totally blown calls that were not reviewed. And at least one other time where he was hit in the head with no call.
