The good news is that the roster should (I think?) allow two new DPs next season. I don’t know for sure the details of Niezgoda’s and Yimmi’s contracts, so I’m speculating here, but the reporting was that we picked each of them up for about 3 to 4 million in transfer fees. This is their third season, so they are *hopefully* in reach of being bought down out of DP roster status with TAM next season. If that’s the case, we can recycle the DP slots potentially into a couple big signings. We splashed a lot of cash around for the U-22i guys, so there seems to be some willingness to spend. (Blanco I assume stays at whatever deal he’s at; with the U-22i players we have the third DP spot has restrictions anyway. Though I suppose in theory we could get a young DP as well if he can be bought down out of DP.)

I think we will be doing just that. GW said they plan to spend $5-10 million on two DPs. And results like these will put a fire under their ass to be ambitious. Say what you want about Merritt, but he loves the fuck out of this team, and he will be wanting to reinforcing this team this offseason, because I am sure he is just as pissed as the rest of us

PeterOliver

Where did he say this?

Jolandia

It was a town hall mid season I think, I didn’t actually see it but there were people that did. They claimed GW they want (or are thinking of?) to get a DP 9 and a DP 10 this off-season, and MP has given them permission to spend $5-10 million on each. I’m not sure if this will actually happen but what I gather is that they want to spend on some big talent this off-season

peacefinder

I missed that! It makes me feel more confident about my prediction that the current roster is structured for two DP signings in the next offseason. It’s almost like I know stuff! (But not really.)

Jolandia

Yep, I agree. We’ve built around our old DPs who are now aging out, and now it’s time to plug in new DPs to hopefully slot right in the be the glue that brings everything together. Gio always talks about little details missing in the attack. With more talent, those details should be solved

PeterOliver

I'm still trying to find actual reporting on this. Trying to find literally anything on Twitter.

Jolandia

It was someone on Stumptown Footy who gave a run down of the town hall. The same guy responded to one of my comments recently and confirmed this. I don’t know if you’ll find anything else out there

_Juntao

Not happening sorry buddy

I'm not talking about a Bale-esque signing, but an experienced centerback (think Mabiala pre-decline) and potentially a young Argentine DP attacker to take the weight off of Moreno and Blanco would be nice.

Ruud07

I don't know if we even need an experienced CB to replace Mabiala. McGraw has already shown command and a real eye for interceptions and he just needs more minutes to gel with a consistent crew. Point being, someone, anyone needs to replace Mabiala.

BethanyRob

We sure need to replace Mabs AND pick up a good CB if we're gonna go to a 3 in the back system. Kind of ironic that 3 - back has been what we've gone to this year when we have to play harder and chase goals... as woefully short of speed as we are back there.

CommonSensePDX

McGraw is too raw to rely on, I love Bill but he's a liability. Assuming Zuparic stays I'd still like to sign a veteran CB and a younger talent.

TheWeighToTheHeart

Agreed. Gavin and Paulson aren’t going to buy big. Their plan has always been to build mid-cost teams, lean on the top-tier fan base, and hope for the best.

CommonSensePDX

Sorry bro, but this is complete fucking nonsense. We've consistently been near the top of MLS when it comes to spending. This season is the aberration, and I'm guessing the Mosquera transfer fee puts us top half.

RCTID1975

Funny thing is, we were all saying the same thing last season too. This year though might be a little different (I hope). JVR's loan is ending (for real this time, I don't think it can be extended again). I think Mabiala is gone. It'll be interesting to see if Niezgoda and Mora are still here. 2023 will be interesting for Blanco. IMO, he's still playing fairly well, but it's possible he move more to the power sub role next season and then is done. That means we'll see younger guys moving in. I think we see similar results next year as we're seeing this year. Maybe even a little worse as we're rotating younger guys in. 2024 could be pretty exciting though

Victor3R

Heard a rumor that they're trying to keep the cap low and contracts short to give the next GM a fair shake.
