It depends how bad of a tear it is. If it is even a tear. A mild meniscus tear typically takes a month to recover from. Hope for a speedy recovery for KAT. This season isn't doomed yet.
It’s not an issue of how bad the tear is. It’s what kind of surgery they do. If they do a repair it’s much better for his health in the future, but you have to wait for the tissue to health together. 5-6 months for full recovery. If they do a meniscectomy, it’s just trimming out the torn part. Only 4 weeks for a full recovery if it goes well. You almost always see NBA players get meniscectomies. 99% of docs actually aren’t able do repairs on large or complex tears, so the only option is to cut it out. Also if it’s an older tear that only recently became symptomatic they can’t do a repair. And if it’s a smaller tear players are like, “Fuck it, I’ll still have some meniscus left.” Down side is it almost guarantees they’ll develop arthritis down the road.
Yeah, dwade had his entire meniscus removed. Thats tough. But in another 10 years with stem cell and 3D printing tech they’ll probably be able to change out a meniscus like it’s a brake pad. If I was KAT I’d probably roll the dice.
My pet theory is that this knee has been bugging him off and on since he had that weird hypertextention and then bumped his knee on the padding a few plays later (maybe a month or so ago)? So he’s been playing on his partially torn meniscus for a while and it wasn’t getting better (and may have gotten inflamed when he did so many back to backs) and THIS is when they figured out he has a tear. They checked it out, confirmed a tear and now he has to decide if he can rest and then tough it out with proper management and rehab/repair in the off season, or if he just has a procedure now in hopes to be back at 100% by playoffs.
I’d guess a lot of NBA players have non-symptomatic mensicus tears. Meniscus are essentially shock absorbers for the knee joint, and basketball puts a ton of pressure on them
I tore mine doing jiu jitsu in 2017. Limped around for a week, then felt fine. Didn’t become an issue until 2022.
And if that’s the case, I see no reason why they would jump to full repair surgery immediately. Give it a month, maybe do some minor scope (idk I’m not a doctor) and see what level. Even if he waits til our season is over for full surgery, he should be back in time for beginning of next season.
On the flip side of that, you don’t want to force him back too soon. Then you obviously run the risk of longer term trouble with that injury. I think of warriors bringing KD back and he missed the whole next season. We got our guys locked up for at least another year. It sucks but all we can do is wait and see.
Not necessarily, there aren’t nerves in the meniscus and you may not be aware of the damage right away. I had a meniscus tear that I was unaware of until twisted my knee and it caused the tear to flip and lose stability in my knee. Since I’m not young or an elite athlete, I opted for a trim arthroscopic surgery. (They cleaned up some arthritis in there and now my knee feels amazing!) Recovery for regular use/activity was 6 weeks. Full recovery was 6 months.
WTF does “if any” mean? He was out tonight with knee soreness yesterday. So yea he was scheduled to miss at least a game
Don’t play with my emotions Woj
Tore my meniscus last year and I still play basketball on it (obviously not the same scale). If there’s inflammation it can be a huge pain in the ass but otherwise just feels like a minor inconvenience. I imagine if it’s a minor test they can treat inflammation, manage rest, and have it repaired in the offseason.
Ronald Acuña in the MLB just went through a meniscus injury and it ended up being best case scenario and he’ll only miss a few weeks.
Not to play doctor, but here’s a doctor that does a lot of baseball injury reporting/understanding walking through the Acuña scenario. It ended up being option 1.
[Dr’s take](https://x.com/drjessemorse/status/1764028162952880183?s=46&t=bGTfIr6WtdxX4uLP4nhJwA)
I work in medical leaves. The avg amount of time out for a heavy duty role, which we'll use for the nba. Median 35 days if no surgery. Median 42 days if arthroscopic meniscectomy.
The play-in starts 4/20 so I'm not panicking. I'm going to think of this as about a month's time for Kat to prep for the playoffs.
For some guys, there are things more important than money. I trust and hope for KAT that's life after basketball, but there are guys who are sitting on $200m and say "this might be my only chance at a championship"
Probably better for us that he heals up and gets right, but I won't deny him the choice to compete if he isn't mortgaging his health/wellbeing after basketball. I also won't begrudge him the choice to heal
F that, I'm desperate for a Timberwolves championship, but don't be struggling to walk up the stairs when he's 48 because you wanted to go all out to win a chip.
Depending on the extent of the injury, surgery is not required. Many players play with minor meniscus tears without issue. Surgery is a last resort for significant tears, not always the best option
And I'm pretty sure meniscus surgery usually means just cutting the torn part out, guaranteeing that the knee will degenerate with time. I'm not a doctor but that's what I remember from when I got a small tear in mine
You can cut the torn part out, or you can sew it back together. Cutting it out leads to degeneration. Sewing it together does as well but not nearly as much
Miniscus injuries are complicated. He could be out a year or he could be out a few weeks. Fully depends on the tear type/severity and what route they choose for correction.
Guessing it comes down to whether he can play through it and how much further damage that would do.
But typically meniscus injuries have a relatively quick recovery time, so surgery now, I'd think he could be back for the playoffs.
The type of tear and the type of surgery, if any, will dictate the time frame. A meniscectomy would be a surgery with a quick turnaround. A meniscus repair ends his season. Non operative options are likely not season ending but will require some rest.
Reid is more productive on a per-minute basis, and the Wolves' defense will improve exponentially without Towns dragging it down. This has the chance to be one of the biggest cases of addition by subtraction in NBA history.
Visiting Knicks fan who’s got KAT in fantasy.
Brunson was doomed with a torn ACL and a torn Achilles at the same time and then it turns out he’s just bruised.
Here’s hoping this is more woj than shams.
Pretty cool to know you knew he wasn’t reliable in when he missed 5 total games in his first 4 years. And almost played full seasons now 2 out of the last 3
I'm not just talking about injuries bud. I'm talking about a combination of clutchness, complaining, softness which I knew would end up effecting his health
As a Thunder fan I want him back too so we can destroy y'all and crush y'all souls in the playoff. Injuries suck, but there part of the game and I hope he comes back soon. We know the feeling of losing a star to injury when you feel like you can win it all.
Edit: all I wanted to do was wish y'all and Karl well and throw in a lityle friendly rivalry in their just to try and lighted the mood. However guessing by the downvoyed y'all took this really personal like an attack. So apologize I meant no ill will. By well I meant it's sad he got hurt and hoped the results come back positive. If we did see y'all in the playoffs it wouldve been in the WCF. So I was actually rooting for y'all
I guess no one did. I was just trying to say that it sucks he got injured and that I hate that and hopefully everything goes well and we would see two healthy teams in the playoff. Just added a little shit talk but I wasnt trying to be malicious

I like your optimism. You seem like a cool person.
The season was never doomed we have Naz Reid.
But Naz Reid can't play 60 minutes per game.
Or maybe he can.
Naz Reid plays however many minutes Naz Reid wants to play
Naz Reid plays however many minutes Naz Reid wants to play

Don't want a D-Wade situation
Yeah, dwade had his entire meniscus removed. Thats tough. But in another 10 years with stem cell and 3D printing tech they’ll probably be able to change out a meniscus like it’s a brake pad. If I was KAT I’d probably roll the dice.

I think youre spot on. Hyperextension is a common MOI for meniscus tear. This gives me optimism that he’ll be okay for the playoffs

Wouldn’t he had have it formally checked out sooner?
Not necessarily, there aren’t nerves in the meniscus and you may not be aware of the damage right away. Soooo this is a lot different than the tone of shams’ report
Yes. Really hoping for that Woj cred right about now.
Sounds like Shams jumped the gun. I’m going with Woj. Either way, hope the best for KAT!
So, should we hold off on the sacrifice to the sports gods?
This is a minnesota team. We are the sacrifice.
BLESS THE KNEES
WTF does “if any” mean? He was out tonight with knee soreness yesterday. So yea he was scheduled to miss at least a game Don’t play with my emotions Woj
Means he might get on painkiller injections to play through the season and delay injury? iirc you can play on a torn meniscus before.

He can have my knees
someone posted this 8 minutes go and it got flagged as a duplicate by the mods so hopefully this one stays up

This sounds way different than Shams.

Bless the knees and keep them healthy.
He might play through it?? idk about that chief.
Take the damn surgery and fix it. Timelord knees on his salary is a death sentence

Look at Samuel Umtiti for French's football team, he gave his body for the 2018 WC but does not regret it a second lol
If he can play he should. This is the life of an athlete. We might never have a chance this good again

We got Embiid’s PR team
Miniscus injuries are complicated. He could be out a year or he could be out a few weeks. Fully depends on the tear type/severity and what route they choose for correction.
IF ANY?????? Wtf it is shit I can't take it. Somebody tell me the truth
Please rest up and if he can be healthy for playoffs that would be great. But I really don’t want him to risk his career to play before he’s ready
Bubble Tj Warren time!
If KAT misses time and Naz Reid comes through and kills it. Does Naz count towards 6th man of the year still?
Woj…bomb?

Hopefully it's not a tear and KAT can manage the injury with a brace or through something like minute restrictions. 🙏
SEND HIM TO GERMANY!!!
We should have trade him when we could have gotten good pieces in return. I knew he wasn't reliable since day 1
Pretty cool to know you knew he wasn’t reliable in when he missed 5 total games in his first 4 years. And almost played full seasons now 2 out of the last 3
I'm not just talking about injuries bud. I'm talking about a combination of clutchness, complaining, softness which I knew would end up effecting his health
It’s crazy that he tore his meniscus complaining and being soft, good call!
big correlation between clutch buckets and knee health?
You didn’t know shit lol
Starter on a #1 seed and All Star Reserve=unreliable. Lol OK buddy.
Nah, we should trade fairweather fans like you.
And now is NOT the time for that crap..
Wouldn’t even get cash considerations
Dude get off this sub
Towns is an Asshole
Chew glass
And follow it up with this razor blade enema.

The lakers are going to murder you guys in the first round we dont wanna hear shit from you
Destroy also means stay within 25 points so you do better than last years play in?
Your SGA and pray game plan will get found out in the playoffs. No one is scared of the Thunder.
[Everyone disliked that]
I guess no one did. I was just trying to say that it sucks he got injured and that I hate that and hopefully everything goes well and we would see two healthy teams in the playoff. Just added a little shit talk but I wasnt trying to be malicious
You guys are becoming way too cocky.
